This is a beautifully situated campsite. The surrounding area is lovley and you can go on coastal walks from the site without having to drive anywhere.
The campsite itself has excellent facilities - toilets and shower rooms are clean and there is a well stocked shop.
On a Wednesday night there is a fish and chip van - but be warned it's not cheap! and on Thursdays a hog roast.
We stayed on the main site, but we were on a bit of a slope.
Owners are very friendly and helpful.
The site was fairly quiet, there were a few dogs running about which was annoying, but otherwise was fine. In the busy period the site did look like a bit of a car park, especially when the family next to us brought 2 big vans which blocked our view for a few days.
I would definitely recommend this site and will prbably be visiting it again

This is the 2nd time we have visited this site. We came across it by chance 3 years ago when we had booked at another site, but were disappointed when we arrived so drove on and found this one. We camped in the Bungalow field then and enjoyed fantastic views across to Salcombe. We love Salcombe in the winter . Far too crowded in summer and very hard to park.
This year we took daughter and grandchildren so booked on the main site. Even though it was August, it didn't seem overcrowded. The pitches are generous and facitities are good. Hardly any queuing for showers etc. Toilets and showers are cleaned regularly. The children loved the space to play and the play barn.
Fish and Chip van visits every Wednesday. Hog roast every Thursday.
The site is well-placed for visits all around the south hams. We love Soar Mill Cove . Very peaceful due to the walk.
The area is very unspoilt and picturesque. Although the roads are narrow, everyone is courteous and makes way for each other.
I think this could become a regular spot for us.

We have just returned from 8 nights at Higher Rew - what a lovely campsite! Mrs Squires is very helpful and friendly, the site is clean and tidy and in a wonderful spot, and to top it all the sun shined!
The site was almost full both weekends but it didn't feel crowded or the facilities overstretched, I didn't have to queue for a shower, toilet or washing up once. The facilities were modern and very clean. The showers cost 20p for 4 mins, which was plenty to shower the children, but I put in 40p and got a luxury 8 mins! The shower cubicles are a decent size so you have plenty of room to put things and get dry & dressed. There is a commercial sized washing machine and tumble tryer (£3 per wash for the washing machine, not sure about the dryer) which was handy, and a a big freezer for ice blocks. There are 2 barns where the facilities are - one for younger children with a slide, swings etc which my two loved, and another with a wooden bowling alley, table tennis, pool table.
A couple of miles up the road, in the village of Malborough, is a Texaco garage with large Co-Op which provided for our every need (there is a small shop on site for basics). The site is in a great location for exploring the South Hams - highly recommended!

This is a pleasant enough site with some nice views, the toilets are of a very high standard and they even provide irons if you need them. If you prefer male only and female only showers this may be an issue as they seem to be mixed (placed behind the ironing area).
The main issue I personally had with this site was the very confusing reception sign which appeared to be on a large shed type building and had a message saying if closed find a pitch. What we didn't see was another reception sign pointing to the house. As a result we tried to park on a pitch which was soggy from recent rain, and got stuck. After several fruitless attempts to get unstuck (thanks to those who offered and gave help) I went over to the house and spoke with the lady proprietress. Full marks to her husband who pulled us out with his landrover and was very good about it. Once we had pitched up proper we relaxed and had quite a nice time. I think the caravans were placed a bit too close together and it all felt a bit regimented for my personal taste, but this would obviously suit other people down to the ground. We paid £9 for the night's stay.

This site has a lot of good things going for it. It is in an excellent location, near to Salcombe, and you can even walk down to South Sands and into town if you are reasonably fit and enjoy walking - it really is a beautiful country walk. It's also very close to the coastal path, and we enjoyed a truly fabulous walk to Hope Cove along the cliffs, coming back via the back roads. The nearby village of Marlborough and town of Kingsbridge are also very nice. The owners of the site are very friendly, provide lots of information and keep the toilets and showers very clean. We had no problem getting access to any of the aforementioned facilities (which are reflected in previous reviews), but the site was fairly empty, so high season might be different. The negative aspects were as follows:- The field seems quite exposed (no dividing hedges) and is almost all grass. We thought it might get quite muddy in the wet, although it did seem to drain quickly when we had a cloudburst. The showers are 20p for 4 minutes - which is okay. But half of my time was cold water and half very hot. You cannot adjust the temperature, so I couldn't wash my hair and we had to move on. If you're paying extra for a shower, you expect it to be good! Also, the country lanes around the site are narrow - awkward if you're towing a caravan. In high season, we think it could get tricky. We don't know how the site compares with others in the area, but we thought it a bit pricey for what it provided - but that might just be the going rate for Salcombe. However, if the showers were better, and some work was done to improve the grounds a bit, we would definitely go back because it's a lovely spot.

Friendly site. Bungalow Field much quieter than main site. It slopes a bit though! Best pitch is no 8 on Bungalow Field as it has best view of the sea but hasn't started sloping yet in two directions. There is some protection from prevailing wind from a big hedge behind pitches 1 - 10. If you camp down the very bottom of the hill in the Bungalow Field, park your car behind the Bungalow hedge if its very wet, as cars slip trying to get up the hill on the wet grass. Toilets very good, showers OK. Shop good. Lovely clifftop walk to Hope Cove (about 8 miles-ish there and back). Avoid walking on roads, they are too narrow. Tip if you walk down to South Sands: leave the road at Southern Mill Farm and take the footpath down the left hand side of the caravan site. It's much safer and is a pleasant shortcut.

We spent a fortnight at this site in late August. The weather was OK, cloudy or sunny with periods of light drizzle. The site seemed quite windy, but somebody told me it was more sheltered than many other campsites in the area. The ladies toilets were luxurious, although private wash cubicles would have improved them. The men's toilets are also going to be refurbished so that would improve things greatly. The showers were spacious and reliable in my experience although I was warned not to use one of the showers as it was tempremental. I used 40p for a really long shower. The site has been levelled so that all the pitches are level despite the fact that the campsite is on a steepish hill, nobody is a terribly long way from the facilities. I thought that the pitches were a little close together, but that there was plenty of space in front of each pitch. However as the site was so hilly there was not much useable area in the pitch we were on. The washing up sinks were indeed excellent with piping hot water available and stainless steel dish drainers at each sink. The washing machine was not quite adequate during the damp spell that we were there, and there was nearly always a queue to use it, and the tumble drier. A spinner was provided at the end of our stay, so I assume it must have been being repaired. There were two very large chest freezers that you could freeze your own ice packs in which worked very well. The showers were unisex next to the dishwashing area, but this was not a problem for me. There was only a very short queue on couple of days out of our fortnight stay for a shower, and always a toilet availalbe. There was a small play barn for the little children, which was not lit after dusk, but seemed to attract teenagers at night. There was a table tennis table, a skittle alley and a pool table for older children plus a tennis court which seemed quite expensive. Not quite enough to keep teenagers happy, but the beaches nearby are some of my favourite, and there is plenty of things to do in the area. The site is very well and discreetly run, and kept very clean, but I never had the impression of 'big brother watching over you' which on some sites can be inhibiting. The children really could have done with a level area for football, or a couple of trampolines. The location is stunning, and having stayed once we would know which pitch to choose another time. The drive down to Salcombe for non faint hearted drivers only is stunning, and Kingsbridge, Hope Cove and Thurlestone Rock all make this South Hams area a stunning place for holiday. I was disappointed that there were not more facilities for recycling on site, and was tempted to take our cans and plastics home with us. However despite some of these negative comments I still feel it is one of the best sites we have stayed on, especially suited to younger children and anybody who likes a nice quiet site with good facilities. Camping Gaz and Calor but not orange bottles were available on the site. We were already planning on returning whilst we were still there, and perhaps combining it with a campsite with more for slightly older children to do, such as the River Dart Adventures site which is a fair distance from the beach.

Took a short break here last weekend - it is in a lovely location but I would agree about the mile of narrow lanes from Malborough if you are towing as I was! The campsite was very clean - best shower block and washing up area that we have used. The owners were very welcoming and run a very nice shop on site. The beach at South Sands is about 25 minutes walk away but coming back is a very steep hill! but there is a car park at the beach as well - coast about £5 day. The beach is lovely with watersports (we hired a kiyak for £12.50 an hour) but it is very small when the tide is in! There are lovely walks on the coast just behind the campsite and we had a 2 hour walk around Soar Cove. All in all, we enjoyed this campsite - lots of room for everyone - but no pub within walking distance if you fancy a meal and drink out

When we got to this site, about 10 minutes drive from Salcombe including about 2 miles of quite narrow lanes, it was pretty much full, no more than a few pitches remaining and quite a lot of young children running around. So we were on the verge of trying to find somewhere quieter, but the views and the first impressions of how well kept the site was enticed us to stay.
Even considering how full the place was, mid week in the middle of July, the site had an incredibly relaxed atmosphere and once the sun went down, everything was completely peaceful. The only sound was that of the cows in the next field down the hill. You won't hear any traffic noise from local road here.
The pitches are spread over the side of a hill but they are all nicely levelled out and there was plenty of room and then some for a generous 4 man tent to sit sidelong next to the car. All pitches have electrical hookup. Drinking water taps are plentiful and you won't have to go far for water wherever you pitch.
Even more amazing than the lack of noise was the lack of queues for showers, toilets and washing up facilities. There are 8 showers in total (which as mentioned before are 20p for 4 minutes. The very helpful people at reception offer to change 20p's for you on your arrival).
Reception is also a shop selling all of the essentials and is open from 8am until 6:30pm, although it does close for a while in the afternoon. Otherwise it's a drive back to the co-op at the Texaco petrol station back on the main road to Salcombe about 2 miles away.
If you're peckish in the evening there is a lorry that turns up at about 7:15 selling fish and chips and judging by the queues (this was the only queue I saw the whole time), they must have been pretty good. The lorry will stay there for around an hour (and left just as I started to feel hungry).
For those with an interest in the local history, at the top of the hill and just visible from the campsite (given away by the antenna) is Hope Cove WWII radar station. Apparently no longer in use but it is documented well on the Subterranea Britannica website.
You know a good campsite when you feel like you want to stay longer as you pack your tent away. This is most definitely one of those sites.

July 2005 We got a great welcome when we arrived at the site, after a 12hr journey that is just what you need. The pitch was well kept and level, all the pitches are terraced. For any one needing any help there is a tractor to help you out. The toilets and showers may need a bit updating but they were always clean and we always got a hot shower (20p/4mins). There is a well stocked shop open twice a day for your daily milk and paper. Don't forget Tuesday night is fish & chip night as a van calls round to the site around 7.30. If you have never visited South Devon and are looking for a base to tour the area then Higher Rew is perfect for that. Once you get over the, at times, tight back Devon roads, the beaches and views will take your breath away. We will be looking forward to next year when Higher Rew will be on our short list of sites to book with.
