Just back from two fantastic weeks at this beautiful campground. You have great views of a small valley in the Isle of Purbeck. If you want you can choose a (large) place no power, so you are very calm and open. The campsite has six sites with electricity. On the weekends now in high season, the campground was full, but even then it looks still well off. During the week it was nice and quiet at the campsite. You can barbecue in your own tent or build a fire in a brazier. Wood is available at a small camping shop with a useful range for camping. They also rent out fire pits. The people at the camp are all friendly, helpful and welcoming. At the edge of the camp is a cute little station on the Swanage Railway, a steam train. Except that it is a very nice attraction (our son of 13 was there not stay away), it is also convenient to transport for example. Corfe Castle (ruined castle) or the seaside resort of Swanage. We also have a nice walk in this beautiful area and a visit to Monkey World is well worth it. The toilet facilities on site is simple but okay, hot water is free. Only in the busy weekends the capacity was a bit on the small side. Next to the campsite is a nice playground for kids. Space for soccer, tennis and other games is more than enough. So, if you're looking for a quiet, beautiful, affordable camping spot without electricity in beautiful surroundings, then this is really a must! Cassandra and Mark, Netherlands

This was our second visit to this site and found it still as wonderful as the first time. The staff very friendly and helpful. Toilet block kept clean and well stocked by the staff. Regular drives round by staff to collect rubbish from tents was very helpful and useful.
Swanage only two and a half miles away very useful for shopping and numerous food outlets.
Would and have recommended this site to our friends.

My family has just returned from a lovely 5 night stay at Harmans Cross camp site. Well recommended and would definitely stay again.
My wife and I and two boys (15 & 9) are experienced campers and prefer sites which are more about location than amenities. We rarely use EHU.
Harmans Cross campsite is situated is a quiet South East corner of Dorset, just a few miles from Corfe Castle, Swanage and Studland beaches.
We had booked (albeit only a week before) and were warmly greeted by the owner Karen, who pointed out the main points of the site and suggested a few places to camp. Pitch selection is entirely up to you and is not regimented. You would be fine in a group all camping together. Although it was August and got reasonably busy at the weekend, there was always plenty of space for children to play games etc.
The site has two fields; the first, mostly sloping with a few trees and shrubs scattered around it, favored by motor homes, and the second essentially a large field with a fenced off area at the top which is reserved for members of the camping and caravanning club (this area has the best views and also has EHU). The rest of this large field is somewhat sloping to some degree except for the edges that are flat. Most tents preferred to camp around this edge. This whole area is hilly, so no-where is going to be completely flat! The steam railway that runs from Swanage to Corfe Castle and onto Norden (another few miles) is literally running along the bottom of the large field. In fact there is a station at Harmans Cross within a few minutes walk of the campsite and the train often waits alongside the campsite to get into the station. The train passes approximately every hour but everyone enjoyed seeing it and waving at the passengers so was seen as a PLUS to the site, not a negative. The fields were kept very neat and tidy with grass kept cut and owners checking for odd bits of litter and even driving a golf cart round offering to pickup your rubbish at times. Dogs are welcome on the site and BBQs and off ground fires are allowed too.
The site has one amenities area as you come in. This has a small shop (well stocked with the essentials and received fresh bread every day), a waste point, a fresh water point (the only one on the site), a dish washing area (only cold water) and a toilet block which comprises two toilets, two sinks and two showers for each men and women.
Although the toilet block is quite small, it seemed to cope well with a busy August weekend and there never seemed to be queues for showers. The toilets were cleaned regularly and apart from the obligatory grass cuttings on the floor which simply can't be helped at a site like this, they were very clean and tidy. Showers had decent sized cubicles, lots of (free) hot water at good pressure though giant shower heads!
There is a village hall at the entrance of the site (which we only saw open once during our stay) and a very nice children's play area in the field next to it. This puts it in easy reach of the site, although you can't quite see it from any of the pitches.
There is no wi-fi on the site and we could barely get 2G (E) on Vodafone which was a bit of a pain for all those things we now use Smartphones etc for these days. You need to get into Corfe or Swanage to get 3G or pickup a BT Openzone etc.
If you were being picky you might say that the site could do with a second fresh water point near the bottom of the field and a hot water tap on the dish washing area would be useful, but you can take a kettle for that. The other thing was that you couldn't pay for the site by card unless you did a bank transfer (which we did for the booking fee). It's cash otherwise, although the owners seem to appreciate that this is awkward for some and didn't insist on payment upon arrival! In terms of pricing; it seemed very reasonable.
There are lots of things to do in the area, in fact we ran out of days to fit them in. Highlights were Corfe Castle (and surrounding hills), Studland Beach (lovely National Trust beach) and a walk down to the secluded 'Chapmans Pool'. The 'Tower Park' leisure park is only 30 minutes away in Poole and has things like a large swimming complex, a bowling alley etc for wet days. You might consider looking at a National Trust membership beforehand as Corfe Castle (plus parking) is around £30 for a family of 4 otherwise, and places like Studland beach are £9 parking. It wouldn't take long to recoup the £100 odd annual family membership.
In summary; a lovely quiet and well run site in some fantastic Dorset countryside, perfectly placed to explore the area. Well recommended and would definitely use again.

Love this site. Very helpful owners when we booked last minute. Great position next to fantastic Swanage steam railway. Site quite hilly but plenty of space to find a flat pitch. Super local playground at end of drive. Toilet block ok but can get a bit messy during day due to lots of campers. Would definitely come here again.

A basic but lovely spacious campsite with the most helpful people running it. We were a large group of 8 families and they couldn't have been more accommodating. Only 2 toilets/ showers for each gender but there was hardly ever a queue and were cleaned twice a day. Train line goes right pasty he site which is lovely for younger children.
Only down side for us was that the washing up area only had cold water.
Will definitely be returning.

Excellent site staff very helpful and friendly whole site extremely clean and tidy, although facilities on site are minimal it does not detract from the wonderful stay we had here and will certainly return.
Location wish everything is within a very short distance and you are far enough of the roads for a very peaceful stay. Would thoroughly recommend this site

This is a really nice site with very friendly and amenable owners: Mark and Karen. Other campers were fine: only rowdy behaviour on one night and they were kicked off by the owners the next morning.
Like most sites in this area getting a flat pitch is a sometimes challenging, . It is well signed and located and being next to the steam railway station at Harman Cross was great. Pole position has to be down in the bottom left hand corner as you stand at reception.
It did get a bit tight on our first sunny weekend: 2 toilets and showers for each sex stretched it a bit when there were over 300 people on site, but we stayed for 2. 5 weeks and this was the only time you had potential queue issues: never a good thing when one needs to visit! Karen was a cheerful and noticeable toilet cleaner.
The recycling on site was poor: only glass, but the council tip was only 3 miles away in Swanage: yes we were sad enough to visit it every couple of days, but I think sites should offer full recycling: most do and only offering glass was poor, hence the mark down in some categories.
If in the area I would return at a shot, though as it is a big wide world out there we may not head back that way. If you do stay, a barbecue down on Dancing Ledge would be my top tip. BTW this is also the best value site in the whole area: £23 for all 5 of us: our teenagers are all adults now, though if camping there was no electric opportunity. Try and take bikes as well as the Purbeck way is cyclable and you can ride all the way to Old Harry Rocks on it: stunning
Great little Council Park for smaller kids at the site entrance which was very popular, though not with my teenagers! Facilities on site could be considered limited, but that is why we chose it: toilet, shower, space and p and q is all we ever want when camping in the UK. It has a small shop which was handy. They did allow off the ground fires which was a nice touch!

Lovely site, great view of the trains. Loads of space to pitch our tent without cramping our neighbours and vice versa. The dog was happy and made to feel welcome. The owners are friendly and helpful. We ended up not using the car at all because of the railway being so close, the trains are not intrusive in anyway.
We're going to go back next year, shame they are only open for 6 weeks of the year.

Good base for exploring Dorset, especially useful if wanting to use the Swanage Railway. The trains did not bother us but they could be heard (and they are pretty loud) up until around 11. 45pm, not 11pm as somebody else said.
Nice relaxed approach from the campsite reception, allowing us flexibility in our stay. Good price too.
Only downsides are:
1)It seemed quite difficult to find a level level pitch.
2)The toilet/shower cabin was quite poor in my opinion, only one in the corner of the field, not very well cleaned and inadequte for the site having only 2 male showers, 2 cubicles, 2 urinals right next to the 2 sinks. I didn't like this aspect of the holiday at all but the less fussy may not be bothered, just be aware.

We have just returned from 4 days camping here and had a fabulous time. The site is beautiful, with the train at the bottom of the field and kept in very good condition. If you have small children, you may wish to consider pitching a little closer to the shower block (2 showers and 2 loos per gender and all very good), particularly as the land is hilly (sorry if that seems a bit obvious but we just got carried away picking a secluded spot!). With only 50 pitches, you have plenty of space and for the whole time we were there, we had tons of space between us and the other campers. Groups are not permitted and by 10pm, the whole campsite was asleep - bliss! We did stay Monday to Thursday so undoubtedly it would be quieter then and on our way of the Isle of Purbeck, traffic was pouring towards Poole. The play park at the entrance of the site is very good for kids and it was very handy having the train so close by - the Freedom of the Line ticket is handy if you want to explore and go out for supper/a drink while leaving the car at the campsite. The owners are incredibly friendly and helpful, which really helps make the experience - we would definitely come back here again.
