A hidden gem, which I literally stumbled across whilst browsing the internet, and so glad we did.
'Mine hosts' tick all the boxes friendly, welcoming and literally put themselves at your disposal. Granted we did not have to call upon them for anything but would have had no hesitation had the need arisen.
Weather was dismal, but had no bearing upon our stay. Hard standings for vans and walk ways make for a none 'sludgy' stay.
Portaloos are spotless and better than a lot of Public Houses I have been into.
Which brings me onto the Anglers Retreat, what a little step back in time gem it is. It was like walking into someones front room. On a temperature gauge I would struggle to say which was the warmer, the roaring fire or the welcome.
Being dog lovers the walks were important to us and we were provided with all the information we needed for the local area by the site owners and went on some wonderful trails.
Needless to say, in the words of Arnie, 'We'll be back'!

A little Gem right on our doorstep, toilet facilities basic but lovely and clean. No showers however. You are surrounded by the wintersett lakes which are fabulous for a walk round and there's an outdoor centre there too.
Owners very friendly and we shall definitely be returning. There is no play area but the neighbouring outoor centre has one and it's walking distance even for a three year old.
I have given it full marks for everything as I can't see why I should knock it for anything.

Paid £17 for a one night stay - Saturday.
Site is very well kept, with nice large pitches, making the site feel spacious. No showers but very clean and modern feel toilets.
Owners of site very friendly and helpful. We had a great stay and will hopefully stay there again.
The site is very close to a few local attractions, all worth a visit.
Great communication on booking.

Superb welcome, totally customer focused. The local pub is amazing---all the locals take food for a banquet most evenings which they happily share with visitors.
If we lived closer this site would be our regular touring caravan park of choice for weekend breaks.
Wakefield should be proud!

Not the kind of site we would usually choose, but we decided to take a chance (even given the lack of showers) and we loved it! :-)
From the warm welcome from when we arrived (the owners/managers also helped when we had a little crisis) to the stunning location it was brilliant. Add in the local pub, a great evening meal (delivered from a local take-away) and it turned into a cracking little break.
We were fully aware of the lack of showers on site and the portaloos (if they added them it would be a perfect site) but for a short break it great :-)

Absolutely loved this peaceful site. As others have mentioned before me, it is well suited to caravans with showers as there isn't a shower block but we didn't find it a problem and the WC emptying point is the easiest I have found.
It's only about a foot of the ground so lifting is easy Wintersett Lake is an easy walk through a wooded path and is an beautiful place.
The owners are just the nicest people. We were there in winter and were snowed in. We decided to have a go at travelling and they said that I it didn't work out, we could return.
We returned twice! Like I say a lovely site with lovely people and a brilliant pub, The Anglers Retreat nearby. Don't hesitate. Book now!

Just got back from this site yesterday, and what a gem of a site.
The site is slightly sloping, but easy enough to level. Good choice of grass or hardstandings.
The site is adjacent to Wintersett lake, which has fantastic walks, plenty of wildlife and a good children's adventure playground.
The owners could not be more helpful, nothing was too much trouble and they were very very friendly.
There are potaloos on site, although we did not use these as we prefer to use our own facilities.
All in all our stay was a great experience and we will definitely be returning to this little gem.

A lovely, very well kept site. Being only our second time out with our Caravan I'm still a bit nervous over pitches, reversing and such but when enquiring via email (Prompt responses which is another tick!) The owners allocated us a 'Drive Through' pitch so I didn't have to worry about it! On arrival I was greeted by one of the owners and shown to the pitch, he was very helpful. Its clear the owners take great Pride in their site as it is very well kept indeed.
Location - Great for us as we had a combo of reasons to visit, Work in Sheffield, Family in Ackworth and Doncaster and Friends all over the place! Everything was a reasonably short drive, and the nearby Station has half hourly trains to Sheffield. The Roads upto the site are easily managed with a caravan, even for a newbie like me! Also only 15mins from the M1 or A1.
Facilities - 16AMP hookup is fantastic. The portaloos are indeed spotless and there are 3 Fresh Water points all easily accessable as is the Elsan point. The site facilities are indeed basic, there's no play park or such but its not needed, the Country park next door has all the other bits and bobs, Cafe, Playground and such so they're not needed on site. The kids that were on site seemed to be doing just fine enjoying all the space available to them! Showers, there are no showers, I'm not sure if they're essential to this site as its set mainly for self sufficiant campers but I personally, think the addition of a couple of showers would make it perfect (just a bit to tall for my caravan washroom!) this isn't a criticism as they clearly state no showers, but it would be a nice addition!
VFM - £15 a night, 16amp hookup, lovely location, Excellent!
Customer Service - The owners were very helpful and polite. The set up works very well
Child Friendliness - From what I saw great! We were supposed to have our 5 year old with us but she chose to stay home with Nanny as its the school holidays, a shame really as there were a few other young children around all playing together. They were all well behaved and not noisy at all. In fact our 7 month old was probably the noisiest when it was time for a bottle!
Overall - Lovely site and will be our 'go to' base for future area visits!

Lovely small site right next door to a peaceful country park, woodland and lake which is lovely for long walks plus the added bonus of has an adventure playground the kids loved. There is also a cafe and visitor center here and cycle routes that go on for miles. So although there is no park on site, which we usually specifically look for to amuse the children, it didn't matter at all.
The owners are really friendly and helpful - don't be put off by the porter loos, they were really clean! Secure site, we had no worries about leaving our camper unattended.
Will definitely going again soon!

Stayed on the site as part of a group on the rally field. We live locally and think the site is a little gem. The owners are friendly and welcoming and could not do enough for use.
Although there is no shower block on the site the temporary toilets are kept very clean so do not be put off by this.
There are some lovely walks around the lakes and Haw Park woods and the village of Crofton close by has several convenience stores, takeaways and pubs who do food.
