Just returned from a week at Widend with the Wife & 2 kids where unfortunately, with the exception of 1 day, it rained all week.
This site is a beautifully maintained family run site with good size pitches which were mostly reasonably level with good drainage which was needed due to the horrible weather. The toilet blocks are spotless throughout the day and given the amount of mud around, this was commendable. There was plenty of hot water throughout the day, although a couple of the showers were a bit dribbly and they were the press valve type which kept shutting off.
Staff were friendly and helpful and the entertainment facilities were reasonable. The site offered discount vouchers for the attractions in the area. The shop was open for most of the day although it would have been helpful if the snack bar opened at breakfast and lunch times to allow people to grab a snack. The pool was clean, of a reasonable size and was heated with plenty of space around for sunbeds etc. Although could have done with a few more of them. The only downside is that it shut at 6.30 so if you wanted a swim after a day out, you would have to be quick (not that the weather allowed this much!)
The bar was a good size with plenty of different drinks stocked. The entertainment was a bit of a letdown as there is nothing really for the kids early evening except 'Uncle Bobby' on a Monday. Entertainment for them is limited to this and the small games room and play area. My kids soon got bored.
The site is pretty handy for exploring the area and is pretty easy to find.
All this would normally add up to good value for money as the prices are good compared to other sites in the area but there is one major drawback - the road noise.
The camping pitches are situated next to a busy road with noise from all sorts of vehicles day and night. I read the reviews before I went and having looked at the map and assumed that it was only a minor country lane, thought that it would be ok. I therefore decided not to heed the warnings but having now experienced it, I would urge people to do so. The road is a rat-run between Totnes and Torbay and the noise is incessant with peaks between 4-6pm, 10-12pm and 5-10 in the morning. Between that, the sound of the rain and various owls and foxes screeching, sleep was very difficult. Being an experienced camper in tents, I can put up with most minor noise but this was too much. With very little sleep it soon spoils the holiday somewhat.
It was a big shame because we all liked the site overall but would not go back for that reason. If the owners would consider relocating the tent pitches further back on the site away from the road, this may overcome the problem. Tents are the least insulated from noise but are the closest pitches to the road.

We went to Widend from 17th July to 22nd July, this is a family run site and very friendly, was told over the phone when we placed our booking that we could not pitch our tent until 11:00am but as we arrived early into Devon decided to turn up at 9:00 and ask if we could have a look around the site. We were told as they were not too busy we could pitch up straight away.
This is a really large site mainly for caravans, they state that they have 184 pitches! In reality it is more like 20, the overflow field is about 30 degrees slope so no way am I recommending the overflow field. In the main pitch field you at first think that you are next to a nice country road, when in reality it is a very very busy cut through with the road noise continuing to late at night and start early in the morning.
They have a very nice outdoor heated swimming pool but it shuts at 6:30.
Unfortunately the bar was only open from 8:30 to 10:30pm every evening except Sunday and Wednesday. There was no entertainment apart from bingo and a quiz on the Saturday. Felt very let down as previous reviews stated entertainment but may only be in high season but as we had paid the top price for high season did really expect some sort of entertainment.
The games rooms consisted of 2 pool tables (50p a go) jukebox, various arcade games. The 2 pool tables were unplayable as they were not level so the balls just ran to the edges.
The toilets and showers and washing up facilities are all very clean and never had to wait to use them, water was always hot, just a pity the shower water pressure was very low, found out on the last day of our stay that they have another block further up the site that has better showers (too late)
A good facility they have is a freezer in the washing up area that you can use to re-freeze your ice blocks free of charge.
They also have a laundry room includes irons etc, a very good idea.
Site shop seemed to be open 2 hours a day and very limited.
The showers etc are cleaned from 11:00 to 1:00 so you cannot use them until they have finished.
Trips out were to Torquay (very nice) the local water park (Quaywest) Sidmouth etc.
Sounds all a little negative but ideal for a heavy sleeper and use the site for a base to do day visits.

We had a fantastic holiday at widend. Partner had stayed before but when he was a child.
Overall the campsite was brilliant, v. Clean toilet and shower blocks, washing up facilities and laundry.
Entertainment was put on in the bar 5 nights a week, this was varied with comedians and singers. Other nights were available for a quiet drink.
Atmosphere around the site is one of a safe and happy place.
We don't have any children but those families that were there seemed to feel that the kids were safe. Great play areas for them and a lovely pool.
Also on site is a plentiful shop, take away food bar and games room.
Generally pitches were good, all close to water/waste and bins. We were fortunate to be about 30 seconds away from the toilet block, but no pitches were that far away really.
Downside is that some pitches (including ours)was on a slope (these are side pitches sort of down the side of the driveway), but this was not really a problem.
Site is very pretty with trees and flowers and is immaculately kept.
-we did find out that if you want to watch tv i.E. In your caravan etc then you need a digital box i.E. Freeview.
Area is great, although we used the car a lot to get down to paignton and torquay. Lots and lots to do. We had a very full packed week. Not far to drive to large supermarkets.
All beaches were lovely definitely recommend goodrington sands which is close for families with children (especially for the water park on a hot day!)
Also recommend finding out when regatta week is in torquay and visiting then, were were able to watch a fab fireworks display because of this.
Would definitely recommend and we will be returning.

Great campsite within easy reach of all of Torbays attractions.Very welcoming on arrival giving good information and discount vouchers. We were allocated a pitch in Sunset View which was next to the main children's play area. Fortunately we were given pitch number 14 which was quite level unfortunately this could not be said for the majority of Tent pitches which were on a slope. The approach road was gravel which was quite an ordeal for children on their bikes. You felt a bit second class citizen with all the best pitches and locations reserved for caravans. This area was also next to the main road which was quite noisy at night. The facilities on the site were very good with a well stocked shop, reasonably priced take away, nice bar and a heated outdoor swimming pool. It must be said that the staff were helpful throughout our stay. However I also have to say that on our final night the neighbouring field had some joy riders in till 4 in the morning creating a awful noise. It was said that this had never happened before which regular visitors concurred. Nevertheless we had a wonderful time and would visit the site again if visiting the area.

The third visit to this site for us which is unusual as we like to travel around and try new sites, but booked here as a last minute thing. The site is immaculate with a well stocked site shop, friendly clubhouse with regular entertainment and nice pool with plenty of sun loungers. The toilet and shower blocks are again immaculate and cleaned regularly and with plenty of showers and toilets we never had to queue.
Pitches are flat and level with plenty of space, reliable EHU's and a nice play area for the kids make it an almost ideal family holiday site. The drawback is that it is next to a road which attracts high speed night time traffic making sleep something that other people enjoy. Also, had some trouble with noisy neighbours, mainly the ones who had a permanently sited caravan who think it's OK to watch TV outside at gone midnight, and a northern gentleman who 'Says what he likes and likes what he says' sharing his bigotted views on just about everything at the top of his voice to anyone who would listen or didn't otherwise have a choice until 2am. Thankfully the site owners will deal with it if you report such behaviour.
With Torquay a short drive away and Paignton a stones throw away it's well placed if you like a beach holiday but there's loads to do if you prefer to be more active and you don't have to travel far from camp. Brixham is around 20 minutes away by car and is a nice day out, as well as being one of my favourite places to go fishing. The kids enjoyed the Penguin Sanctuary at the Living Coast in Torquay.
I've noticed that since we first stayed there in 2006, more and more space is being made for long stay caravans. Maybe the site is going that way and moving away from camping, be a shame if it did.

We stayed here for two weeksjuly/august. The site has spotless shower/toilet and washing up facilities, the staff are really friendly and the pool is well kept.
We thought the site was perfect for visiting the surrounding area all the attractions are within 20 minutes of the site. The bar on site was fine too and well priced, the small shop stocked all your essentials but there is a supermarket 10 minutes away.
The pitch was on a bit of a slope but we did manage, the pitches are really good sizes and not crammed.
Overall this site is excellent value as their prices are one of the lowest in this area.

Just back from a fantastic week at this site. On arrival the staff were very friendly and helpful. The facilities are very good with very clean washrooms and showers. The outdoor swimming pool is great when the weather allows. This site makes a great base for visiting Paignton, Torquay and Dartmoor. Would recommend anybody who stays in the area goes to Paignton zoo as it is a great place for a family day out. I would recommend this site to everyone.

We camp on this site at half term every summer - it's possibly the most convenient campsite for the Torbay area, and certainly the best situated.
We always have a bit of a discussion with the site owner about whether the ground is dry enough to park a camper with an awning, but they always find somewhere for us.
The facilities are amazing, given the very reasonable price - large and well equipped/maintained play area, heated pool, shop, games room, cafe/restaurant/bar. Also, an abundance of electric hookups.
The only downside is the proximity of the road, which is a rush-hour rat-run from Torbay to Totness, and a back-route home after a few drinks in the pub, so there's some traffic noise until quite late.
Having said that, the owners have obviously tried to screen the road with hedgerow & trees, and as traffic noise goes, it's not a big deal. There are other campsites in the area, much more widely advertised, which are smack on dual carriageways! However, it's the reason I've only given a 9/10 rating. No road, and it would be a perfect family site!
Most of the time that we were on the site we were in the pool. My kids love swimming, they'd be hanging round the pool gate first thing in the morning waiting for it to open, and then we'd get back after a day on the beaches, and they'd be straight in the pool again.
They organise children's' entertainment in the bar, which is a quiet and relaxing place. The shop has all the basics that you'd want, and the restaurant is a good value alternative to cooking in the camper!

Great site. Visiting in a friends touring caravan as they have a season pitch but usually a camper, I checked the camping field out too. Set idyllicly in country lanes, but only 5 mins drive in any direction to local amenities, supermarket, takeaways, towns Paignton, Torquay or Totnes. Two great, clean, plentiful shower / toilet blocks with electrical points too. Great washing up facilities. Fab outdoor pool which was a little too chilly for me but not for the kids, loads of sun loungers around. Small tasteful club house with evening entertainment for kids and adults with really reasonable prices for drinks, games room attached. Small takeaway food bar only open in early evening again really tasteful and hardly noticeable. Small well equipped shop again really reasonably priced. Two park / play areas one larger one situated on the tent field and one smaller one at the top of the caravan area. Lovely allocated dog walk through the woods. Only things to watch: 1. The lane can be quite busy so some traffic noise 2. The tent field on a slope so bottom pitches preferable over the side pitches. Overall really great site will use again

On arriving the staff/owners were very helpful, showing us to our pitch and giving us money off vouchers for the local attractions.
The toilets/wash rooms etc are the cleanest we have used while camping and were inspected regularly. The whole campsite is kept very clean and to a high standard.
The pool was a good temperature and the bar had a friendly atmosphere.
The site overall was quiet and relaxing and there was no noise at night.
My one little criticism is that the shower block nearest the tents had low water pressure.
If we are ever in the area we would stay again. Recommended.
