We stayed at this site for one night (18th October). We only live 10 mins drive from the site which makes it convenient for a quick cheap and exciting night away camping with our 2 children and dog. The site is small but very nice. We had the whole place to ourselves for the night and loved the freedom of the whole field to play on and let the dog run free. There are a few static caravans at the top of the site followed by hard pitches for tourers then down to the bottom camping field which has pitches with and without EHU. The whole place seems to flow very nicely and feels contained by the trees lining the perimeter. There is a toilet block at the top of the site where you enter from the road which is very clean and well lit. You can also find washing facilities and an INDOOR dishwashing area. We took our 4m belltent, 2 cars, 2 children, dog and 2 adults. We paid a very reasonable £18. We arrived early, around 11am and left at around 2pm. The owners were absolutely lovely and made us feel extremely welcome. We will definitely be back time and time again. It's on the doorstep for us so we're all looking forward to popping up regularly once the season starts up again next March.

Arrived on sunday 7th sept 14. Was going to stay for 1/2 nights but ended up staying for 4. The owners are really friendly and helpful and dog friendly. We didn't want to leave. The toilet block was very clean. There is a nice walk to the river local shop and pub is only a stone throw away. Will definitely be going again. 10 out of 10

We have just returned from The Old Forge campsite. I would just like to say that Margaret and Roger are the most magnificent hosts we have ever met. They were so approachable and accomodating, nothing was too much trouble for them!
The facilities (toilets and showers) are dated but spotlessly clean. The 20p charge for showers is ok ( its just 20p!)the water is hot and plentiful. There was some road noise and there are lots of birds (it is the country afterall!)Our fellow campers were noisy into the early hours but we use ear plugs so problem solved! All in all we had a great stay and I would definitely go back. Thank you Margaret and Roger.

Stayed in a static caravan for 3 nights last weekend. We are a family of four with 2 sons age 14 and 8 and a dog!
Had a fabulous weekend which was made even better by the owner who was so friendly, helpful and accommodating. The caravan was very clean and equipped with everything we needed.
The beds were very comfortable and we slept well which is unusual for me!
The village itself was beautiful and had lovely walks. There is no shop in the village but it is not far to shop in next village.
Would definitely recommend this site and would return. It was very good value for money and I can't say enough positive things about the owner who ensured that our stay was the best it could be.

We have just spent 3 nights here with our 3 children, the owner is very welcoming and friendly and was more than happy to help out in any way she could. The site is very well ran and all the facility's are kept very clean the showers cost 20p but they are hot and last long enough also the peace and quiet is amazing. The village itself is beautiful with a play park, football pitch and a lovely river which my children really enjoyed having a paddle in. Overall it's is an excellent campsite and we have already booked to go back.

Myself and two friends visited this site for the weekend and the beginning of the month. It was a lovely site, really flat to pitch the tent and easily accessible for walking.
The facilities were great, individual toilets and showers and they were always clean.
The owners were extremely friendly and helpful, we received a lovely warm welcome and an equally friendly send off.
There is a pub within walking distance, although very pricey, it was worth travelling along to the pub in Gainford for food and a drink.
We received excellent value for money and would definitely recommend the site!

My husband and I have recently returned from 2 weeks at the above site. I cannot understand the comments from the previous reviewer.
The toilets are not the most up to date I have used on campsites, but they are very roomy and always clean with plenty of toilet roll, soap, and hand towels I never once had a shower that was not hot enough, and never noticed any mould on the tiles, and shower curtains always stick to your nether regions even at home. It does cost 20p a time. I'm sure it is to make sure the hot water stops running, it won't cover the cost.
I don't know what size of heater they were using either, but we could run a microwave oven, induction hob, and toaster at the same time, and never once tripped the electricity.
All in all a very pleasant site, and very helpful owner, who went looking in her shed for wood for us when the new bed we had had installed broke, and produced slats from bunk beds which were ideal.
We would certainly return to this site, in fact we extended our stay by a week as it was a beautiful peaceful site

We have just returned from a 7 night stay with 2 adults and 3 children. We were holidaying with friends who have a tent and the same size family. Upon arrival the owner was very helpful and friendly. We got all set up and were fascinated by the baby rabbits running around the site and the field of sheep with recently born lambs adjacent.
The real downside were the facilities. The water occasionally went warm, but for the most time it was luke warm. The facilities were in major need of refurbishment. Showering without flip flops would not be recommended. The tiles had green mould on the grout and a dirty looking shower curtain tried to hug you while you showered. I was very glad to have my own facilities, but my friends however had no choice. There was also no heating at all, so extremely cold first thing in the morning and at night. The showers were also a 20p slot machine.
The electric was the worst we have experienced, constantly tripping out. Even during the night when there was nothing on but the electric caravan heater, we woke to find it had tripped.
We were pitched in the camping field. No one in the reviews mentioned that this is right next to the A67 so there was an extreme amount of road noise. Also the trees were filled with crows nests and the birds awake about 4am and squawked constantly until about 8pm. After 2 days I had to bring my 2 daughters inside because they were struggling to sleep because of these 2 factors. My friends in the tent had no choice but to put up with the noise.
Every thing else was lovely. We went out and about every day seeing all the nearby castles, museums, waterfalls and had a lovely time.
We did enjoy our week but it's need of an update to make your time there enjoyable.
I personally wouldn't visit this site again, however if they make some refurbishments or you are in a caravan or motor home then you would probably have no issues.
I hope you find this useful.

After frantically trying to get on a few campsites last minute, I found this one, I rang the owner and they said they had spaces and I could just turn up this evening.
When my husband and I arrived, the owners were already in the camping field and we were waved down. I was asked if we were able to park up OK, because if we were inexperienced the owner would park up for us, my husband is a HGV driver (the owner is also ex HGV) so no problem for us. The owner guided my husband in after advising that we would need a ramp so that the caravan was level, he picked up two old flagstones and asked my husband to back onto them, telling him exactly when to stop, unbelievably the caravan was perfectly level, no trying to get up the caravan ramps, checking levels, manoeuvring or anything he had the perfect height for the pitch.
The campsite was about 70% full, there were a few children playing happily in the middle of the field. By 10pm the caravan park was completely quiet, and extremely peaceful.
The facilities are housed in a stone building at the top of the campsite, and whilst a little outdated are extremely clean, lots of toilet roll, hand wash, a large shower, chair, 3 hooks for clothes and spacious. I assume the cost of updating would far out-way any profit made, and I had no issues with the toilet blocks, in-fact they were better than some ultra modern ones.
Saturday was spent touring the area, because it was raining, and on Saturday night my husband and I walked to the local pub - Bridgewater Arms - it is only about a 2 minute walk from the campsite down a slight hill. We had a 2 course meal at approximately £50. 00 in total, but the food was home cooked, good choice and a lovely bar. Stayed for a few drinks, and then quietly wandered back to the campsite.
If this is a truly honest review, the campsite is small, the statics are getting on a bit, and there is no park for children, but there is one in the village, and the river is close by and looks shallow and fun. The campsite is extremely well kept, the statics although old are well cared for, and everyone seems very friendly. I assume the majority of visitors are regulars who come for the peace and quiet.
I would definitely return to this campsite, hopefully when it is not raining so that I can walk along the river, the pub is a bonus, but beware there is no shop in the village, you have to go the next village aprox 2 miles away, or into Barnard Castle.
One important fact, the camping field has no hard standing, although there are approximately 3 hardstanding pitches in the static area. We have a twin axle caravan, and we put our full awning up, and we were still able to park the car next to the awning without infringing on next doors pitch. There are only about 20 pitches on this site and approximately 20 static caravans, so it will never feel busy or noisy. All in all a lovely weekend for £40.
