Fairly small site set in the stunning Cwmcarn Forest. When arriving it's worth following the brown signs rather than the sat nav. It's also worth noting that check in is in the visitor centre. This was not mentioned on either our booking confirmation or on any of the signs until you reach the actual site which is past the visitor centre
Plenty of walks and biking for all levels, lake for fishing, lovely cafe, small gift shop but nowhere in walking distance for milk and papers. Luckily we had lovely neighbours who got these items for us to save taking the motorhome out.
The site itself is in need of some attention and needs tidying up and weeds sorting. Toilets and shower block were not the best. The had water all over the floor, soap dispensers empty and rubbish on the floor which for the first three days we were there was not picked up.
We would revisit for the location not the site.

We camped with three other families and found the site to be excellent. Three caravans and a tent.
The toilet and shower block were clean.
We used the café and found it to be excellent value, very friendly and helpful as we had our 18 month granddaughter with us.
We enjoyed the walks, the views and the general ambiance on the site.
On our list to return to.

Beautiful well kept site. Booking was easy over the phone with a helpful lady. On arrival we had a pitch next to the entrance which is gated. Can be a bit busy at times. The toilets and showers were warm and clean. I was led to believe this was a family site with no youth groups allowed. This was not the case with a large group of kids all the same age. I was told when I emailed the campsite about this fact and how they run amuk. That this wasn't a youth group but a group of youths who are friends from school! I wouldn't stay again because of the groups being allowed. Lots of local shops around, very easy to find. Cafe on site is yummy. Great for walks and cycling.

We stayed a week during Easter, with our 3 children 1, 4 and 6y.
The site is lovely, surrounded by trees and you can hear the nearby stream (fenced off so not a risk for children) gushing away.
The shower and toilet block was clean and warm. The showers were excellent.
Re the previous comment about cars driving through, the campsite is on a no-through road which is gated at the start, so this wasn't/isn't an issue.
For children this is a brilliant site: There is a small climbing web right by the shower block, and a further infants age playground outside the cafe at the Visitors Centre. There is a superb Wildlife Brass rubbing trail (probably almost 2 miles), which our children loved. There are pram friendly walks just around the pond and back with lots of lovely picnic tables. During our stay there was also an Easter Egg trail (outdoors) and a Puppet Show (indoors).
For older children, as well as the mountain biking routes, there is also a bike park.
This is a beautiful site, which feels in the middle of nowhere, but in fact civilzation is only a 5 min drive away. We plan to visit again!

Just back from a weekend at this site.
As mentioned by prevoius reviewers, take care on the access road if you are towing. Don't let this put you off though, just take it steady. The driveway is tarmacked but narrow if you meet anyone else and with some large speed bumps.
The park is well signposted from the a467. Again, take it steady and you won't find your selves in the housing estate.
Once in the park you are a world away from the houses. The valley is lovely and there are plenty of trails in the forest park for walking and biking. We had 4 children in our party - 8 years to 5 years and they had a great time. There were many mountain bikers too.
Visitor centre staff were helpful and it sold a nice range of gifts, maps & books about the area. The cafe was great too.
The site itself is quite small but the pitches are a good size and even though the site was full we did not feel too jammed in. The camping pods are all together near the toilet block with the tent/caravan pitches further into the site.
The toilet and kitchen/laundry block was code entry and was kept clean. The kitchen includes a microwave and camping stove which is a good touch. There weren't many showers but we never queued. The showers looked a little tired but were clean and lovely and hot.
Other reviews mention vehicles driving through the site only to turn around and then drive out again. We saw some while we were there and it wasn't ideal but it wasn't a big issue.
Booking was easy and we were called on the day of our arrival to explain out of hours check in as we were stuck in Friday afternoon traffic.
It was a shame that while we were there a large group was there too, it felt a bit as if they took over the site, especially as their dogs were allowed to run loose all of the time. This is not the site's fault but it did change the atmosphere and we were glad we were not pitched close to the pods.
Would we return? Probably as the location in the forest park was great.

Just stayed one night to do some walking and see the stars in an un-polluted sky. Campsite fine and in spite of being in a valley had the glorious sunshine all day. Facilities good and a friendly site with mainly tenting families. Only drawback is the access road - there is a drop on the left and the road is too narrow for a transit size camper and an ordinary car to pass. The tarmac is raised so to go over would not be good. Few passing places and it wasn't fun. Fortunately there weren't any cyclists on the road to pass which I was told there usually are. Must be hell if busy and although it is not far to the visitor centre and campsite it was a little hairy. Coming down isn't so bad as there is only a bank to fall into! A beautiful place to walk and relax.

Access to this site is quite straight forward. Do not follow Satnav as this takes you through the local housing with narrowish roads and cars parked either side.
Follow the A467 up the valley until you come to a roundabout with a big mountain bike set on it, then follow the broum tourist signs that take you to the long private driveway to the site.
The site has large levelish pitches but take your rockpegs with you. The facilities block is keycoded and was always very clean and welcoming during our stay.
The barrier to the scenic drive is locked at 10pm so there is no passing traffic. Light pollution is minimal so overnight stargazing can be quite spectacular.
Reception for the campsite id within the visitor's centre which also has a cafe.
Local shops are located in Abercarn, Cwmcarn and Crosskeys, although there is a Tesco and Aldi in Risca a few miles down the road.

Campsite is clearly determined to make continued improvements. Tesco and Morison supermarkets nearby. Some reasonably good eating places nearby, one place was 2 for 1, which was the business. Can't say the fish and chips and Risca were anything special, in fact they were pretty rubbish.
Quiet time of year to be on site, glad it was quiet as I think with a large caravan without a mover, one might struggle to site the caravan. I am a novice though, and the pitches were of a really good size. The only downside and it was a pretty big downside was you would get at least 2 or 3 cars per hour, driving past, turning round and heading back out of the site. For some reason, people think they can cut through the site. It affected how secure we felt, but I am sure can easily be put right.
You must tie in with some of the events at the visitors centre, we did moth night and really enjoyed catching the bugs, letting them go and catching some more.
All the tokens for laundry were purchased from the visitor centre, which meant you couldn't purchase anything after 5pm.
Forrest Drive is not to be missed, but I imagine it's pretty mental on a hot summers day.
Would certainly re-visit :)

Just back from a weekend staying at this site. Thoroughly enjoyed it. It was easy to pitch the tent on the pea-gravel hard standing. Showers were clean and hot, kitchen/laundry was well equipped and staff could not have been more friendly and welcoming. Walks in the area absolutely stunning - and a great workout! I only held back 1 star because the lock to the ladies' toilets/showers was broken and when the door was not propped open by a traffic cone, I had to use the gents. Camp location gets 9/10 because a path goes right past the campsite with only a low fence between. As the only tent in the camping section, I had a lot of people stopping to look and comment. Overall, I will definitely be going back.

A most enjoyable short break at this lovely location!
No, one is not pampered to as with other well established sites - but who really cares! The wardens and all the staff are lovely - so helpful and friendly. They work hard to retain the 'natural' ambience of the site. There is a visitor centre, cafe, toilet and shower block, kitchen, laundry facilities, chemical waste, electric hook ups and the water taps are not far from pitches.
Excellent cycle trail through the forest - nerves of steel at some points! We walked for hours up through the forest and along the very top of the valley - fantastic views. Well worth the effort!
For the less mobile, access through the forest by car to various car parks and activities is well thought out.
This site has something for everybody - even a lake and stream. Seats and picnic areas are around the forest. Shops, pubs and supermarkets if needed are a short drive away.
The only niggle I had was purely a selfish one on my part - I didn't feel like cooking after I'd been out walking all day and the cafe had closed!
My husband has also said to mention that the water pressure in the toilet block could have been better and the sinks were designed plug less. Poor chap!
