What a lovely campsite. We had a pitch with electric hook up. Pitch was a good size as we have a huge tent. Surroundings were gorgeous, facilities clean and the campsite not far from shops. Forest Drive was fantastic, with a park and picnic area high towards the top, great for kids. People do take their pets there but all were kept under control and area kept clean and tidy.
The ONLY criticism we have is for the canteen at the visitors centre. Breakfast was good value, however, staff could do with a lesson in customer services and perhaps put a smile on their faces! After all us visitors are on holiday and don't want to feel like a hinderance to their day. The staff on the main desk were helpful, pleasant and welcoming! and it was nice to have that background security presence during the night time.
We will definitely be going again and have already recommended this site to friends.

On arrival I noticed there were 3 fields all with power points. There was a kitchen, which was clean and tidy with a washing machine and tumble dryer, toilet/shower blocks which were both clean and tidy too. The best showers are in the information centre to the left of the entrance these are free to use but a donation can be handed in at the info centre reception.
Fantastic walks perfect for mountain biking. Dogs are also allowed but camp fires are not permitted.
On your walk, you will reach a perfect setting of a lake with plenty of seating/decking areas so you can sit and enjoy the idilic views and peacefulness. My husband and myself found the perfect bench to sit in the rain without getting wet, it has a plaque on it with 'Billy Thomas' marked on it.

What an absolute fantastic site. Good toilet facilities, has showers(although could do with being updated), toilets hand basins. There is electric hook up for those that require it.
Good clean toilets & kitchen area. There is a payphone in the kitchen which by the way isfully enclosed & coded the same as the toilet blocks.
There is a security guard on overnight, we met him on our first night & was very welcoming & friendly.
In summer weather area is idyllic, beautiful walks around the site. Approx 1 mile down the lane is a beautiful pub called the Castle Inn, where meals are more than reasonable. We as a family of four ate for £19.50. The landlady very, very accommodating & very friendly. There is a cost cutter shop in amongst the housing estate, but sells all that you need.
We would very much go back & visit again - the ladies in the visitor centre shop are also very, very friendly.
They also have their own coffee shop & this was more than reasonable in price & quality. Again very friendly staff.
Go on, try it out.

This is a fantastic value for money site. Have stayed several times over several years. Have gone through frame tent and trailer tent, this was our first time in a caravan but still an excellent site. Friendly wardens, clean facilities though fields a little soggy! Has undergone a revamp recently - new visitors centre. Morrisons supermarket 10 mins away (in car) Good pub meals - The Otter a few miles away, 2 Excellent walks, forest drive and cycling routes.
Will be returning again

This was the second campsite we have visited and one we were not disappointed in. You have to phone really as there are only about 40 pitches including hardstanding. There is also a first nights deposit to pay which we did via debit card.
The site itself has three small fields with toilet block containing showers, next to the middle one. There is also a kitchen at the end of the building. All are accessed using a keycode which you get when you register your stay. The toilets are worn but clean, the kitchen, however, was a bit smelly with burnt food etc, but ok.They were also well lit in the night. There is also a chemical disposal point and a bin area as well as your standard drinking water points.
The area has tonnes of walks and I regret not exploring more of the area. We did drive up the forest drive but were perplexed to find a locked gate in the way. Not sure if this was opened at a certain time or we had to pay (we were there at 10am on Sunday). Will ask next time as we are going again.
Oh yeah - this is a must if you are a mountain biker as they have dedicated mountain bike tracks around the forest. Some of these guys were flying down the hill!

July 2004 This is a nice, small, clean, quiet (when the kids are asleep) council-run campsite set in Forestry Commission land where we spent a lovely 2-night break in our tent with our greyhound, Maisie.
The setting is stunning: wooded hill slopes rise on all sides, a rushing mountain stream runs alongside the site, and wonderful walking & biking trails begin straight from your tent.
The site is arranged across 3 small, long, narrow fields with a tarmac road/track stopping at the end of the third far field. 40 numbered tent/caravan pitches are spaced along the side of this 'road'. Some have electrical hook-up & hard standing.
In front of the first field is the visitor's centre & reception. This field is mostly smaller pitches for tents. At the end of this field, screened off, are the bins & the chemical disposal point.
The middle (second) field has electrical hook-ups & houses the shower/toilet/wash block. Hot showers are free, there are ample clean toilets & washbasins, all cleaned daily. There is also a small pot-wash room with fridge & cooker, laundry area and public telephone.
We were in the second (middle) field and, whilst it was convenient being so close to the shower block, the kids staying on site tended to congregate here & the brick-built block echoed & magnified their noise. It also didn't make for the prettiest view. If we go again, the third field would be our place of choice as it is furthest from the visitor's car park & shower block & has the best views.
Beyond the third (final) field is a small lake with fish (fishing available) & clean enough to swim in (if you are a dog).
There is a cafe attached to the visitor's centre serving good greasy-spoon food at v. cheap prices. There is a souvenir/snacks/maps shop but no camping shop - so no provisions or spare camping gas cannisters etc.
The best thing about the site is its setting. There is an iron-age fortress site at the top of one of the hills, which you can walk to from the campsite (2 hour round-trip, map & directions free from visitors' centre). There is also a 7 mile "Forest Drive" which would be a good thing to do if it rained. Cycling is popular, both on and off road with a long mountain bike trail.
This site comes recommended, we would certainly visit again.
