I stayed on this site with my little boy for one night in June. It's only a small site but the facilities are excellent. There's a kitchen that's free to use and includes a small oven, sink, kettle and toaster. There is a washing machine, tumble drier and iron although there is a small charge to use these. The toilets and showers were really clean and very spacious. The site is ideal for mountain bikers and hikers as it is right at the foot of Cwmcarn Scenic Drive. There is a visitors centre which has a nice cafe selling reasonably priced food. The price per night wasn't too bad (£13 for an electric hook up pitch). Dogs are welcome and if I stayed there again I would probably take mine. The only downside is that there isn't much for young children to do on the site itself, although there are nature trails and things to look out for in the Forest Drive. It would be nice if there was a playground on the site.

I have mixed feelings about this site. Yes, the reception staff are extremely helpful, the visitor centre and cafe is impressive, the forest trails great for walking and cycling. However, the site seems to cater more for campers than for caravanners, and because of this the amenity block is just not cleaned often enough. In August peak season one shower was also out of order during my stay. The electric cooker in the kitchen was in a disgusting condition too.
I was allocated a pitch in field 3 with EHU but this sloped so much that I had great difficulty in levelling the van (had to jack it up and put blocks under the wheels) and virtually needed a ladder to go in and out of the external door.
Where the edge of the pitch meets the foot of the forest was a band of stinging nettles, and the pressure at drinking water points can fluctuate considerably. There is no TV reception at the site.
My feeling is that this local authority owned site doesn't receive the same amount of regular care and attention that a privately owned or club site would receive, and that seems to me to be the problem. I suppose the incentive is lacking and knowledge of caravanning is absent.

This site is very well thought out, there are three fields.
1st field has 7 all weather pitches this is where we were (we had reservation about these pitches but we needed the guarantee that we could pitch when we got there even if the weather was bad) and we loved them!
The other two fields were normal pitches very well maintained.
The toilet block was very clean and the showers were fantastic. The cleaner was there every morning and they had security on an evening at the weekends.
We had a fantastic week!
The only thing I have a problem with is they have put the prices up. We paid £75 for 6 nights the new pricing will take it to over £120 for the same holiday and I am not prepared to pay that when nothing has changed. So unfortunately we wont be returning any time soon.

First of all, I should point out that we stayed at this site a couple of years ago and enjoyed it very much, hence the return trip. The new visitor centre is very nice, clean and airy and the toilet block was also clean and new looking. The kitchen was grimey and not very user friendly. The campsite advertises itself as a family site which does not accept groups of young people - in fact the board up in the field said just that. On arriving at our newly refurbished and very tidy looking pitch, however, we found that we had been placed next to a group of about half a dozen mountain biking lads. Their language was ripe and their music ear splittingly loud. I don't begrudge young people having a good time, but I do begrudge being told one thing by the campsite operator and quite another happening in reality. My husband went back to the reception and complained. The staff to be fair were very friendly and we did get a full refund - even our deposit

We stayed at Cwmcarn for 5 nights in June in 2010, and had a fab time. We brought with us our brand new tent, and got a hardstanding pitch with EHU.
The entrance to the campsite is just beyond the Forest Drive visitor centre, which is where you check in. Because of the way it's set up, with the visitor centre taking bookings etc, it's a little on the impersonal side, but the facilities available and location soon makes up for it; you can get a sandwich or basic meal from the cafe during the day if you're feeling lazy.
There's a large cabin in the centre of the site which houses the basic kitchen and wash-up facilities, alongside but separate from the shower and loos. These were all kept very clean and tidy. None of the pitches are more than a 30 second walk from the block. Next to the block is the water supply, chemical loo disposal and recycling bins.
We chose to stay at Cwmcarn as we were checking out the mountain biking trails in the forest, as well as exploring the South Wales valleys, Brecon Beacons and Cardiff - it's central location was perfect for all this.
A word of caution for those who like to have phone and TV signal - neither was good in the valley. We didn't have a TV, but one of the caravanners was moaning about it. I never had signal on my mobile (on O2), and the other half had sketchy signal on the 3 network. It might have been improved by now though.
We'll be going back to Cwmcarn again soon I imagine, as my mountain biking ability has improved enough to try out the red trails now, and we'll take our tent again.

Just returned from this site and had to write in to reassure any future users. We were a little concerned about the facilities on reading past reviews, but the campsite has newly refurbished the toilet blocks and they are very nice.
Toilets work well, beautifully clean tiled floors and sinks. New shower cubicles with plenty of room for drying and dressing without getting your clothes soaking wet.
The pitches are huge in the field 3 and although the field is on the narrow side the width of the pitch allows for reversing with a 21 foot motorhome and we watched touring caravans being reversed in effortlessly.
New all weather camping pitches have been developed with landscaping which is better than our garden ! The visitor centre reception is very friendly.
The surroundings are beautiful and the forest drive a lovely experience. We took the van around the drive (cost £5 for 7 miles of fabulous scenery ) and stopped in several of the carparks to walk and appreciate the view. It is all very well done - well signed walks and mountain bike trails (which provide much excitement for the spectators - how do they dare to hurtle down a mountain !???)
All in all a lovely weekend.

We have been to this site before and found it really nice. On this visit it had been raining for a few days before and we weren't sure what the pitch would be like. Upon arrival the staff at reception were lovely. They even offered to give us a refund if we felt it was too bad. We checked the pitch and decided to give it a go. We have a big tent and managed to get it put up in the wind but decided not to put up the canopy in case we were converted into a kite! We had electric hookup which was fine. On the saturday we managed to get the canopy up and we are glad we did because it then continued to rain right over the bank holiday weekend and it was nice to BBQ under the canopy. The weekend was what you made of it despite the rain and wind. The only downside I'm sad to say was the facilities. Last year they seemed fine but this year they were awful! The kitchen was minging! The showers were broken, mouldy and the shower/wc facilities were dirty. I know it was raining but come on - a cleaner could have made it a little better! NO LOO ROLL! Toilet out of order, sinks out of order - the facilities were just awful. Come on Cwmcarn Forest Drive, give the facilities a bit of a refurb. It needs it. We will go again but if it doesn't get better that will be our last visit. Oh and wasps.Loads of them!

Reception staff friendly. Electric hookup fine. Cwmcarn forest drive lovely. Toilet facilities and shower facilities adequate - although clean, they do need to change the shower curtains and the water pressure for the showers is rubbish - though they are nice and hot! Coped well considering the downpours we went camping in. I would probably go again, but nip home for my shower! Spaces reasonable not huge. They do good food in the cafe for breakfast

Visited this site as our 'maiden voyage' as new to caravanning. Stayed for weekend - across 2 nights. Very basic site, but nonetheless very pleasant and would certainly return again, albeit only for a short stay. TV reception virtually non existent as this site is situated in a deep valley, which is absolutely beautiful and surrounded on all sides by forest mountains. Brilliant base if you are a cyclist. Some very pretty walks to be had also. We had a grassed pitch, which was a little muddy but not boggy. Little tip, sat nav takes you into TOTALLY incorrect road which we found a bit of a nightmare as it was a single track STEEP incline which lead into somebody's private driveway! Only way out was to reverse all the way back down - no fun with a caravan in tow! Follow sat nav directions until you are able to follow brown direction signs, which actually take you down a much more caravan friendly route directly into site. Very reasonably priced site. Our overall opinion, nice little site but definitely only for short stay visit.

This campsite is based at the foot of Forest Drive in Cwmcarn South Wales, just north of Newport (about 10 miles.)
First of all I can't comment too much on the actual forest itself, this is clearly the draw of this campsite, miles of forest walks, mountain biking trails and picnic tables and bbq areas which I'm sure would be absolutely superb in the summer.
I believe there are 7 different trails of varying lengths.
We camped in March just for one night to test a new tent so I can only comment on the site, staff and facilities, so here goes -
It was £11 for a 6 man tent - great value
Pitch size - very big, enough room for tent, car and chairs tables etc.
Staff - very friendly from booking over the phone to allowing us on the site early.
Facilities - poor. We had read that they were 'excellent' according to a book but that's not the case, the kitchen area had two scruffy sinks that didn't have any hot water, an ironing board with no iron (£5 to hire from the visitor shop) and an oven that I wouldn't dare use. It also had a couple of washer/driers in but I didn't investigate those.
The toilets / showers were also scruffy, no hot water in the sink and the showers themselves had a poor water flow and very manky shower curtains covered in mold.
All in all, I bet its lovely in the forest but they need to upgrade facilities.
