Stayed here in winter season, turned up late as pre arranged due to travelling up from Kendal.
Was very quiet as expected, only a few units mainly tourers on site. Flat level site and well drained, also dog friendly. Bar on site which was open weekend nights, served great food & local ale.
Didn't have much to do with the village as passing through, but it is easily reached on foot via a good path we saw.
All in all great site with rewarding views, friendly staff and lovely old castle next door also! Looking forward to my return sometime.

Just returned from a 2 night stay at Castle Cary. We were a group of 3 families, the children's ages ranging from 3 to 13.
Check in was hassle free and quick and we were shown to the tent field and given the choice of where to pitch.
Tent field was spacious and level and we picked a perfect spot, near the toilet block, directly in front of the playpark and overlooked by the ruins.
Site was quiet with only a few other tents on site which suited us as there were no queues for the showers or toilets.
Unisex toilet/shower block is unusual but didn't pose any problems. They were clean and adequate although some of the toilet doors didn't lock and my daughter nearly got stuck in one! Shower on the right was at times a trickle of water depending on how many other showers were being used at the same time.
Kids loved the playpark and the spacious field for ball games and the added advantage of a free outdoor heated pool was a big hit.
There is also an indoor pool for a small charge and a games room with pool table and arcade games but we didn't need to use either with the outdoor facilities and forest area.
Short walk into Creetown or drive to Newton Stewart for shopping if needed although shop is adequately stocked and not too expensive.
All in all a lovely site and I would definitely consider returning in the future.

Nice flat field to pitch on. Toilet/shower block excellent. Great play area for the kids. Nice view of the castle, within the grounds. There's also a pub on site which was handy. Think there were other facilities but we were only staying for one night. Had a lovely walk through through the woods into the village and had a great night at the Ellangowan Hotel. We also stayed here in 2011 so this was our second visit. Highly recommended site!

We are just back from our yearly camping get together with a group of friends and this year we tried Castle Cary.
The site is in a beautiful location and not too far from Newton Stewart that has a Sainsburys and Aldi for any essentials you may need, although there is a quite adequately stocked shop on site.
The pitches we had were ideal, we have a Touring Caravan and our friends have large tents and we got pitches all next to each other close to the toilet/shower block which was ideal for all the kids that were with us.
Huge play areas for the kids, along with indoor and outdoor pools, games room, snooker room for the 18+, fishing pond and crazy golf.
There is also the Lairds Inn an on site pub/restaurant which we tried one night and the food was lovely as was the beer!
The toilets/showers are Uni-Sex but well partioned. The toilet block has a key card entry that costs a £20 deposit! which at times was a bit of a hassle but bearable.
The only bad point I can think of is, that the showers are utterly useless unless you get the first shower on the left where the main feed comes in, if that shower is on the others trickle water out, but this being the only bad point the rest of the site more than makes up for it.
We will definitely be back as this is one of the best sites we have visited in Scotland

Just come back from a 5 night stay at Castle Cary. Its a lovely place and would definitely consider going back, However we were there on the last week of the Scottish holidays and therefore a little too quite for my 10 yr old daughter but she and my 4 yr old son loved the play park. All the pitches were level and hard standing with good drainage (needed on a couple of nights!).
The toilets and showers have seem better days but still usable, the showers are unisex but are all self contained for privacy.
There's loads of walks and a strict keep leads on dogs rule which is needed as there are rabbits running freely everywhere (We nearly had to put our 4 yr old on a lead never mind a dog!).
There's an outdoor and indoor pool, we only used the indoor one for which there was a small charge, both pools were clean.
There seems a lot of seasonal pitches which maybe made the place look a little quite.
If touring with a caravan beware that the entrance to the site has a large dip and hump with obvious signs of long vans bottoming out, my 16ft seemed ok though. However there were plans for that to be changed along with a new holiday home complex being built beside the site.
I highly recommend on a cloudless night turning your lights off and having a look at the stars it will take your breath away.

Just back from most enjoyable five days with husband, son (11) and dog. Had booked for only three days but our son was enjoying himself so much we decided to stay on.
Tent pitches are on a level, well drained field. It rained buckets overnight a couple of times and there were no puddles or boggy patches!
Outdoor pool is warm (and free), swingpark looked well maintained. There is fishing on site and a nice games room with pool tables and a few arcade games, enough to keep our boy happy anyways. That's when he wasn't playing in the woods!
Lots of great outdoor activities in local area and kids big and small will love Cream o Galloway, with fantastic icecream tour, adventure playground, BMX and go carts etc. Wigtown booktown just a short drive too.
Plenty of woodland walks for the dog both on site and locally.
Staff friendly and helpful. Small shop but the village is only a short walk away, with Newton Stewart five minutes in the car for supermarkets or camping supplies.
Unisex showers/toilet block cleaned twice a day. Washing up sinks clean and under cover, though I suppose you might get wet if it was raining horizontally! BBQS/contained-fires appeared to be allowed on site.
Was fun watching all the children in the field playing till quite late (being midsummer) but it quietened down completely after 11pm.
There is a 'keep dogs on lead' rule (probably just as well with all the cute rabbits and ducks) but we noticed quite a few folk ignoring this even with not so well behaved dogs. This annoyed me as it's owners with this sort of attitude who get dogs banned from sites completely.
All in all though, a great wee site. We will certainly be back.

Just returned from a 5 night stay, over easter at this site. Friendly and efficient reception but we were given a completely useless map to try and find our pitch, so small we could not read it at all and judging by the many people driving round and round the site, we were not the only ones who could not read it.
When we did eventually find our pitch it was hard standing and quite level, it looked like it has just had a lot of new stones put on it as did a number of other pitches. The only problem we had, which we were never told about when we booked, was that unless you book a super pitch there is no tv reception whatsoever, even people with satellite seemed to spend an hour trying to get a signal, could have been the mountains that surrounded us which caused this, consequently we had no tv until we were able to move, after 3 nights, to a super pitch, but most of these pitches are vacated by sited caravans, so I think that is why we were not offered one when we booked.
Toilets were immaculately clean, separate male and female blocks but showers were unisex cubicles but with a locked door so you felt quite safe, some shower cubicles had toilets in as well. There is a laundry and 2 tumble dryers if you need them. There is a small restaurant on site which was quite nice although slightly expensive.
Being the time of year outdoor pool was closed but indoor was open but extremely busy all day as only 10 people allowed at one time. There is a well stocked shop which sells basics and you can order daily papers the day before.
There is a fishing pond which was not the best but past a few hours quite happily, not really for the keen fisherman like my OH and son but it sufficed. I would recommend this site but be aware of the lack of a tv signal if this is important to you.

We arrived at Castle Cary during high season (2nd August) with 4 kids ages 10 and over. The site is set in a beautiful location overlooked by an old ruined castle. My daughter was disappointed as there was no sign of a donkey corner as advertised, (or even one donkey)! fortunately the abundance of wild rabbits helped to distract her as did the heated outdoor pool. The pool itself was rather mucky and considering it was high season I would have expected it to be clean. The on-site restaurant was lovely inside, as were staff it was quite pricey but a nice treat.
The toilet blocks were dirty when we arrived at lunch-time, it was early the next morning before someone came to clean them, unfortunately this was carried out to a low standard.
I don't think I would return due to the site being right next to a very busy and noisy main road, so if your a light sleeper beware. There was also a tractor working in a field next to campsite at 12.30am!
