We have used this site for a few years now and I must say that it is going downhill rapidly. Toilet blocks were kept clean and tidy, the only thing was the amount of grass cutting in the showers, nothing to do with the cleaners though. Plenty for the kids to do, ie, playpark, games room, swimming etc. Outdoor pool could have done with a clean though. Forget washing clothes on site, really expensive for tokens, a complete rip off so head into Newton Stewart laundry and save a fortune. Creetown is a 5 minute walk with a couple of good pubs, good butchers and a paper shop. If you want to do a decent shop you have to travel to Newton Stewart 5 miles away. Loads to do round the area, galloway forest, the raiders road, cream of galloway park to mention a few. The pub on site is not up to the standard it used to be. Locals that used to frequent it now go somewhere else. We thought that the beer was overpriced and the same goes for the food. Everything we had to eat there was overdone and cooked from frozen, helpings were not to generous either. If you wast to eat you are better off going into Creetown. Forget the lairds Inn ! All in all the park was not to bad although it does need some money invested into it to bring it back up to what it once was. Hopefully that will be done when we next decide on visiting it.

I have just arrived back from our half term holiday at Castle Cary and thoroughly enjoyed it. We went with a touring caravan and found that we had plenty of room to get the caravan into place (bearing in mind we have a twin axle). The site had loads of green for the children to play, their own lake either to fish in or to walk round, swimming pools (indoor and outdoor) of which were very warm, crazy golf, games room, playground, and lovely walks to boot. The showers and toilets were very clean too. There were plenty of things of interest (museums, farms, shops, art galleries etc) close by. We only went to a few things because the children wanted to stay at the site. I must admit my husband and I didn't mind because we enjoyed relaxing next to the caravan ourselves. The site also has its own shop and a pub in the grounds which serves food (either to eat there or you could order carry out) which we went to and enjoyed. I will also say the dogs enjoyed their stay due to the (dare I say it, heavy) population of rabbits which they frequently dreamt about (as dogs do) I was pleased we had strong leads. The only draw back to the site was that there was loads of midges so take lots of extra strength repellant.

We have just return from Castle Cary and we loved it. We have five children and they all wanted to stay longer. The moody teenagers could hang out in the games room or go swimming and the younger kids could play on the park or crazy golf. There was also a massive drafts set outside reception. The unisex toilets were very clean although took some getting used to. The washing up area was very clean and the pub on site was lovely and quiet and we felt very welcome. We took our manic spaniel and he loved it too but definitely need to take a strong lead as there are tons of rabbits and he would have had a wail of a time if he had gotten loose. Only our third time camping but we will definitely be returning to Castle Cary - local shops were a bit scarce but the butchers in Newton Stuart is definitely worth a visit.

Stayed here with the kids and our dog for 5 nights, we didn't have electric hookup and so had the choice of putting our big tent anywhere on a massive flat grassy area. Area was well drained and easy to put in tent pegs. Toilet blocks were adequate. Wash up area is outside, also adequate for us as it was fine weather.I wouldn't be so keen if it was colder or raining. There is a games room which we did not really use. The kids used the outdoor pool a couple of times but it was a bit too cold for them and they came back to the tent slightly blue and shivering after 10 minutes of swimming! Apart from check in and out I never saw any staff and the girl who checked us in and out was very young and not very informative. A good base for exploring the area and set in lovely grounds. But could do with revamping the facilities and employing more enthusiastic knowledge staff. I priced to stay here with our touring caravan and decided to go to the other local caravan site instead which is much better and more friendly.

It was fantastic, friendly staff good food well kept facillities. Free outdoor heated pool which was brilliant. The games in the games room were a little dated but that would be the only thing I could say against the site if I was forced to. The views were stunning and there was plenty of wildlife around. Very close to Creetown where there are additional pubs and activities available.

After reading so many good reports about this site, we decided to book in for a long weekend. The site was well laid out with loads of room for our tents etc. They have made the mixed shower block really nice with carpeted bathrooms but the keycard entry can be a bit tricky as you only have one card per family. The showers were ok but not too hot. The food at the Lairds Inn on site was good and reasonably priced with a friendly service although we did have to wait one hour after ordering at the carvery. The staff looked too new and didn't seem to be too sure of what they were about. The bins at our tents were never emptied from the Friday we arrived and we left on the Monday. They were full by Saturday afternoon. Overall I would rate this as average and didn't really offer anything to entice me back.

The campsite is in a great location for touring the area, right on the A75. Easy to find.
What wasn't easy to find was the tent pitch for hookups which are very few and all located on a slight slope farthest from everything.
The kids loved the outdoor pool and the playground, there was also an indoor pool which seemed empty every time we looked in.
The lairds inn did good food and reasonably priced. There is a shop on site which although basic sells the essentials. Top tip keep food well ut of way of the rabbits as the pesky things will help themselves to your food!
They did have a problem with the water pressure when we were there, but to be fair I was advised of this on booking, meant showers not too good at busy times and toilets wouldn't flush, but this only happened in peak times.
The main thing that could be improved me about this site was the toilets. For the large tents field there was one block of unisex toilets and showers, not enough. Although reasonably clean they ran out of loo roll quite often. Kids are not allowed in the toilet block on their own, which given a childs frequency to need the loo becomes monotonous after a while. They also have a key code for the toilets, which when we were there became jammed and we and everyone else were unable to use the toilets on Sat night, I did contact the out of hours service but it just went to voicemail, eventually fixed about 8.30 next day. This meant a long walk to the other toilet block. I did ask why the key lock on toilets and told that they have had problems in the past. Thing is they tell you the code on arrival so everyone knows it anyway!
They could also do with a few more sinks for dishwashing, they are at the back of the toilets, another toilet block would fix all this. Bit of a wait for sinks at mealtimes.
Apart from the toilets we had a good time, kids had fun and the sun shone. Recommend Cream O Galloway, excellent fun for kids and delicious ice cream too. Tour round farm worth while.

After reading so many good reports about this site, we decided to book in for a week. Rather disappointed with this place and felt others should know. We were under the impression it had several electric hook up points about the site for tents, but they were only confined to one area with 2 posts. These particular pitches were very uneven and on quite a slope. However the main tent area, with no hook up, were in front of a nice castle on the flat. The site drainage was very good and easy to push in the pegs. The site was quite well sheltered with plenty of sunlight. They have tried to make the mixed shower block really nice with en suite WC bathroom's, but have carpeted these rooms bit un hygienic for a campsite. The showers were not that hot, no hooks to hang things on or dish for soap etc, and constantly covered in grass clippings which folk picket up on their shoes. There was a card swipe system to gain entry to the toilets and showers etc, which can be a pain at times only having the 1 card. The washing up area was not covered and open to all the elements, several times had to wash up in the driving rain. They do have another block slightly better but located well away, more for the hard standing camper's area. Loads of rabbits on the site, many were sick, and often you would see a dead one. Generally a quiet site by 11pm, but we seem to have the noisier ones next to us. They arrived late 1030pm and started putting up their tent with all the laughing and joking going on till 1230 plus the music. The following night was worse, the music went on until just gone 1130pm with the laughing and joking, then just before midnight a carry out for 20 had arrived, while the noise continued till gone 1:00am. The site Manager was informed, and asked if they had a site policy for quiet time and a pitch for late arrivals, they did. And will look in to it. They rest of the time it was a bit quieter, no music. We shall not be returning to this site, as well as several others we spoke too. Unsure how on earth the 5 pennant’s were awarded to this site, by the AA. Think it needs to be re evaluated or improve the running of the site and the facilities. It has a lovely setting and is well placed for visiting Dumfries and Galloway. The food at the Lairds Inn on site was very good and reasonably priced with a friendly service. MalcR

We've just arrived home after a wet and windy week at castle cary. After reading the previous reviews we were slightly disappointed as we didn't agree. Okay the weather wasn't great but the staff mostly young girls who couldn't care less whats going on. We paid for the super pitch and the ariel socket was broken all week with the weather and two bored kids we could have done with it but after the 4th time of telling the girl on reception we gave up. Lovely surroundings, loos and showers (manky!) Lairds inn great food but you've got to book a table as all the locals think its good too, so book the night before. Great play area, cute rabbits, site well kept, Not much in village but a nice walk through the woods. Not much to keep kids entertained in bad weather in the local area.

Had a brilliant holiday here with the kids, aged 5 and 2. Everyone so friendly and the staff, especially gill was very helpful! the facilities were fantastic and very clean. Yes there are a lot of rabbits, but this just proved even more that we were definitely out of town and into the most beautiful scenic countryside. Lots to do around the area and on the park, the lairds inn is really good, the prices are average but they also offer a takeaway service of fish and chips etc. I felt that my children were very safe within the holiday park and we are definitely going back. We even met the laird himself! although we did not know that was him at the time, he was very friendly, down to earth and extremely helpful, despite what the owners of some caravans might say! Many thanks to Gill for making our stay so enjoyable, dont know how she puts up with all the cheeky kids, she does a marvellous job! Mr & Mrs Robertson
