We have just returned from our first break this season. We had a lovely weekend at the Bakewell site, from the moment we arrived to departing today. Nothing was too much trouble for the wardens, and have to say Steve was very helpful when helping to get our satalite sorted so I could watch TV. The freshly baked scones which are for sale in the well equipped shop are a must!

Our granddaughter came to visit on Sunday and had lots of fun just building a den in the copse behind our pitch. One of the simple pleasures of childhood.

We will be returning again and cannot wait, just wish you had shower and toilet facilities.

Many thanks to the site staff.

This is a Caravan & Camping Club site but is open to non-members also. I booked late and found no difficulty booking, even on a bank holiday. A good ‘chippy’ arrives on Friday evening to ease catering requirements at the start of a week-end.

The approach is steep and narrow down from Yougrave. If you are timid, it may be better not to use this site but I am 2. 4m wide, more with wing mirrors, and 3. 4m high and don’t suppose I’m the smallest yet to arrive. Do heed the instructions not to arrive before non, though. You don’t want to meet another unit coming the other way.

Once you’ve arrived, you’ll be rewarded by a very clean and spacious site with flower borders and well-cut grass (almost lawns). Plenty of hard standings. There are no toilet blocks but the prices reflect that. Excellent pies from the deli in the village but get there early as they sell out pretty quickly. You’ll need good legs to cycle around here as it’s rather hilly but the roads are quiet and enjoyable. Several off-road routes are within reach. The area is best for walking, with Lathkill Dale just up the valley and paths in every direction. Tea shops and good pubs abound.

The site is highly recommended for a quiet spell away. Don’t be put off by access comments unless you’re really nervous about that kind of thing. I’ve been through tighter spots than this, accessing sites. Some have approached from the ‘wrong way’ with success but I wouldn’t encourage that: it’s very narrow, with few passing places, and a hairpin bend to negotiate. With good weather you should find it difficult not to enjoy your stay.

Firstly, I have to say that I haven't actually stayed at the site, however in my defence, I am an ex caravanner, a current motorhome owner and tent camper and a local to the site so I do feel qualified to comment.

From regularly using the footpath through the site I can honestly say that I wouldn't hesitate in recommending it to anyone that wants peace, quiet and hospitality. Yes the access to the site on entering and leaving the village is challenging to some but I would like to point out that the parking up of cars as they do is a necessity not malicious as one or two seem to think. Like many Dales villages, Youlgrave evolved long before the car so having to park wherever you can is a just part of life up here and believe me, as a local bus driver I find it's the unknowing visitors, that give me the biggest headache not the locals.

The three village pubs are all worth a visit but it's the Farmyard that gets the brownie points for me. The food is good as is the beer and the friendliness. The butchers is definitely the place to go for your full english but before 12. 30 on a Saturday. They do a great line in freshly made butties and plenty of home cooked meats and pies.

You can walk in any direction from the Farm and find a bit of heaven here on earth. For a fairly easy stroll I would highly recommend a walk back toward the village and pick up the path up Bradford Dale and walk the 2 mile back up toward Middleton and back to the farm. It can be busy on a weekend but well worth it.

Not having facilities at the site wouldn't put us off, even when I had my Pennine camper without a loo, finding a site like this would have been treasured.

On a final word, I would agree that coming into the village from the A6 is by far the best way in and if you're not confident at getting through tight spaces or possibly reversing then maybe you should think twice but I wouldn't let a couple of hundred tight yards put me off, just take a deep breath in and know that nobody is stuck there forever :)

Crikey Moses never again the road to to site was so scary that it spoilt my weekend as I was so worried about going back up the road to get home.

If I could have got a crane to crane me off the site I would have done, goodness knows how big units get on and off, I take my hat off to them.

Such a shame as the site was just so beautiful, the fish and chips wonderful and The Farmyard pub does lovely meals.

I have left a low rating purely for the approach to the site fully accepting there is nothing they can do.

This a beautiful site in a beautiful part of Derbyshire perfect for walkers or visiting the many attractions the county has. There are no facilities as the club brochure states and this is not a problem for modern touring units. Pitches are level and have (mostly) fantastic views although it is a shame that many of the best pitches are obviously taken up by the seasonal pitches. Many walks straight from the site (the one into Bakewell being easy and taking about 2 hours)to some fantastic spots. Staff in the main friendly and helpful. The journey to the village is easy on good roads and if you arrive as advised by the club not a problem. The hill to the site is very narrow and not the easiest with cars parking on both sides but just go for it and you should be ok. The road to the site was partially un-metalled and rough but the manager said this was to be tarmacd over the winter. Fish and chips van on Friday (excellent). Against advice I followed my satnav from Chesterfield and ended up going over the moors and down a very narrow road with several hairpin bends so just follow signs for Bakewell.

We wanted to spend our summer holiday on a site in Derbyshire with walks from the door, fine views, good pubs close by and not too crowded.

We've just come home from 9 nights at the Bakewell C&CC site, that fitted the bill nicely. When we booked our stay via the club, the lady on the phone reminded me that there were no “facilities” at the site. I see that as a bonus as the lack of a toilet and shower block might just put some people off using the site – that helped tick the “not-too-crowded” box.

The views from the 'van were magnificent whichever way you looked. The place was at its best during and just after a major storm. There's something disturbingly comforting about sitting out an electric storm in a caravan.

We tried two of the three pubs in Youlgrave and you won't find better than the Bull's Head at the top of the hill.

All-in-all it's a fine site.

Now for the downside. The problems with access to the site have been well documented on the internet. I confirm they are not understated.

The approach through Youlgrave is horrid – the left turn at the Church is challenging whether or not you meet the bus on the approach and the road down the hill is narrow and cluttered with parked cars and delivery vans.

Nine days later we were going the other way and things were little better. We met three cars (walkers probably) coming down the hill as we were starting to tow up it. Because of the parked cars no-one had anywhere to go and it was the caravan which ended up reversing back down to make space.

I've said it's a fine site and it is, but we'll not be going back. We love the area though next time we will be looking for a site with less stressful access.

The tortuous trek over the Derbyshire Alps described by some never really materialised as the Caravan and Camping Club's 2 newest recruits negotiated the approach to the site with relative ease. 'Steve' must have been thinking 'all the gear and no idea!' In traditional Derbyshire style he said nowt and reassured us there was nothing we would do to surprise him. He happily helped us un-hitch the caravan; otherwise we would have been kipping in the back of the land rover!

Fantastic fish + chips available on site, things were looking better and by day 2 we were even attempting our own awning! Staff and campers at the site were equally friendly and helpful. Beautiful views and spectacular walks; we would definitely go again.

My wife and I spent a fortnight on this site, from 9th to 23rd June with a touring caravan.

We booked the site through the club HQ to arrive on the Sunday afternoon, that was a mistake with walkers just abandoniing their cars with no thought for any other road user. We just managed to get through with an inch either side with two people watching the sides of the van.

As we booked in the warden said had we booked direct with the site, he would have told us not to arrive on a Saturday or Sunday, between 9am and 4pm if the weather is fine, because of the walkers something the club should make clear in the sites book

This explains the signs on the cottage doors in the village 'do not park in front of this door or you will incur damage'

But this detracts from the site, with well cut grass almost like a lawn, very quiet so much so we had to set our alarm clock, so we got up by nine in the morning, as the first two it was gone ten.

We did not take up the satalite tv, and spent the whole holiday without tv. Great.

I was sitting outside one evening, looked down to find a young rabbit sitting beside me.

The welcome was as others have said very friendly with leaflets of interest in the locality

There are no facilities on this site it is back to basics but that was what we wanted.

Most nights we had a walk round the site, and always found something we had not seen, like the footpath that runs through the site, and the way the openings are formed and built into the dry stone wall.

On the last Friday of our stay there were twenty units booked to arrive that evening. Most had children, but the noise from them just evaporated into the hills

Unfortunately there was a major break in the sewerage pipe in the village, so with a blocked road we got to see roads and views we would have missed, the road opened mid way through our second week, only to have a sign saying road closed on Saturday for well dressing.

We had to go somewhere on the Saturday, so came back mid afternoon we decided to follow the crowd, and boy was it good, all the pictures are done using flowers; something not to be missed

We found most of the places of interest in the area good value for money, and after towing through the narrow roads I don't think there is any where I would not go.

We will be back!

C&C Club site and one of the best I've been to.

Yes there are not toilets/showers so own san ess, but that's camping. You're not at home now.

Steve and his assistant Mike were excellent hosts during our week long stay and nothing was too much trouble for them.

Yes the road in through Youlgreave is very difficult if you are towing, and the bigger your unit the harder it gets but please don't let that put you off. It's worth it when you get there.

As previous comments, the 3rd field has the best views but hookups there are limited to the 10 hard standings, and I would also recommend a hard standing if you can get one as the ground does get quite soft after prolonged rain (not muddy just caravan sinking soft!) and these are the only level pitches. All grass pitches will require chocks or levelling boards.

There is no terrestrial TV signal so you will need satellite, or you can hire a dish and receiver fully set up for you, on site (currently 3. 00 per day or 16. 00 per week). Wi-fi is also available @ 2. 00 per day, but you will need to be within 50yards or so of the office to get a good signal.

The site is lovely and quiet and perfect for all - families, couples, quiet breaks etc. Our 1 year old was safe on the site with very little worry about site traffic she was able to toddle around on the immaculate grass fields to her hearts content, picking daisy's and buttercups.

There is plenty to do locally and the site managers, on arrival, will give you local tourist info to assist in your stay.

Friday night there is a fish & chip van on site early evening. Give the home made chicken curry & chips a go - lovely.

I cannot fault our stay there in any way so have iven a full 10 stars. Can't wait to go back there later this year.

Friday night was fine, just what we expected, peaceful countryside views and quiet even on a warm June w/e after half term. Then Sat about 6pm - Karaoke at full blast for over three hours, full disco PA out in the open, hideous out of tune whaling at full volume, inescapable even on far side of site inside motorhome, in fact audible all over the valley, even in nearby Youlgreave 1/2 hour walk away. People left the site to escape this, absolutely ridiculous. Left review on CCC site as I am a member, but as it was negative and honest it did not get published, come here for real reviews!
