We stayed at this campsite over the May Day bank holiday. We were late booking but the staff managed to get us a spot. Being new to caravan camping we need all the help we can get and there was plenty to be had at this site.
There are some wonderful walks on the doorstep, the villiage is beautiful and the site is peaceful.
The journey to the site was a bit hair raising but that was our fault because we didn't fully follow the instructions given to us by the site staff (don't follow your satnav) but once there we had a lovely time and will definitely go again.
The site has a small shop with essentials and there are supermarkets in all of the nearby towns. There are also discounted takeaways and restaurants nearby for you to take advantage of as well.
There is no shower/toilet block but not a problem as we were equipped on the van otherwise, for peace and quiet, lovely scenery, quality service etc, etc this site is definitely recommended.

Agree with all of the comments regarding the access road but with a little care it is easily possible. Be sure to enter Youlgrave via the A6 as via Newhaven it is very tight at the Church turning.
The pitches are well spaced out and would recommend hard standing as the grass pitches are slopped so chocks would be needed. The views from the 3rd field are outstanding so worth asking to be pitched there if possible.
No toilets/showers as advertised but the place is extremely clean/tidy with good re-cycling facilities.
Staff were very friendly and welcoming.
Dog walk is a little to be desired but with the walks that are accessible directly from the site why walk your dog on a site dog walk as there are plenty of footpaths to wander around.
Youlgrave village is within walking distance however at night the lanes are dark so a torch would be recommended. The 3 pubs in the village are very all dog friendly and are well worth a visit. There is a discount at the George for food for campers - the meals are very good & plentiful.
There is a bus link to bakewell but on a nice day well worth the walk-approx 5 mile across fields.
Overall a fantastic site with good value for money and an excellent base for walking The only downside the lane to the site with the cars and the site exit was a little tight so care should be taken.

Fantastic site, amazing scenery and a magical night sky!
We stayed for two nights in our tent with our two children ages 6 & 7. We chose this site as we wanted to cycle the Monsal trail, so we didn't spend that much time on site however;
The site is lovely and clean, grass cut nice and short, bins empty and clean.
There are no facilities, only fresh water and a Chemical Disposal point.
As previously mentioned there is a local indian take away which will deliver, we ate in and the food was lovely as was the atmosphere in the restaurant.
The wardens couldn't do enough to help and were lovely and friendly. The shop at reception was well priced and had all the usual things you'd expect and lovely fresh scones and cakes!

Was a little worried with access after reading the earlier reviews. I followed the directions as given by the site. Only tricky bit is a narrow road where cars park either side. Unfortunately I met a courier van coming the other way so had to reverse, not easy with no sensors or camera fitted yet. Still, in the end we did manage to get past each other. It then turns into a track as you approach the site.
Most hard standings are level, the grass may require chokes. No toilets or showers.
However, lovely views and very helpful staff. No TV reception, but you can hire a sky dish for £3 a night, which we did and that was great.
Local indian take away delivers to reception, they even let you choose a DvD from blockbuster and bring it with them!
Well priced as well, and with the lack of toilets not many kids around (upto you if you take that as a good or bad thing).
I had a nice stay, and will definitely be coming back.

A gorgeous site with lovely site managers who were very helpful with anything. Some pitches are sloping but all lovely sizes and all have a really nice feel to them.
Stayed here 3 times now and it gets better. The road to the site is a little narrow and care must be taken. The views are some of the best we have seen.

A well manicured site with helpful and friendly staff. This was just a short two night break over the bank holiday but we enjoyed the site enough to return the following weekend to give the tent and equipment a good shakedown.
Fantastic views across the hills around Youlgreave and some beautiful riverside walks on the doorstep with abundant wildlife.
I stress as others have that you need to follow the site's directions and only approach as directed. If you brave the narrow lane into the valley via the village then you will be rewarded by a quiet and peaceful stay with exceptional views.

2 problems with this site - major one is just getting there! the last mile of access road is very narrow, and with parked cars making navigation difficult - even for a fairly intrepid motorhomer like me who considers himself macho enough to go anywhere! However, lots of big caravans did make it there, but I could easily imagine gridlock on the hill leaving the site if two tuggers met each other. I suspect the villagers don't like the site where it is, so are not very considerate when they are parking.
When you get there, unless you are on a hardstanding, then be aware that all the grass pitches are on a slope. We eventually found a fairly level place, and were rewarded with some excellent views across the valley. This is the major plus point of the site - but just remember you need a lot of bottle to get in and out!

Just spent yet another lovely weekend at this fantastic site.
I have read some of the previous reviews about the lack of facilities at this site and to be honest that is part of the attraction, we were able to book a grass pitch with electric on a bank holiday weekend with only 3 weeks notice.Where else can you do that?
The wardens are friendly and extremely helpful, we have seen them use their little tractor to help people position their units when the ground has been wet and traction has been a problem.
There is a small playground but any more than 3 kids and it is full. However there are cows and sheep in the fields nearby and this keeps our kids amused.
As for the slope, this is a double edged sword, yes you do sometimes have to chock under the front legs to level your van ( the warden has a bin full of off-cuts of sawn timber if you don't have enough ), but this is the pay-off for the wonderful views.
Youlgrave village itself is within easy walking distance and you have a massive choice of routes as the area is criss crossed by a massive amount of footpaths through beautiful countryside and valleys.
There are 3 pubs to choose from, all doing food at various times and two poorly stocked shops with limited opening times although the site shop sells the basics.
There is a big Co-op in Bakewell and a Sainsburys in Matlock.
As for the access road, if you follow the directions given by the site and you approach in the afternoon (ie When you are less likely to meet a caravan leaving the site) you will be fine. I tow a 27 feet long twin axle and have never had a problem, yes it is a little narrow in places but if you can't tow a caravan in these situations maybe you should consider a tent.
So if you want an all singing all dancing site with a club house this is not for you, if you want relaxing walks to country pubs, peace and quiet for around 13 quid for a family of five this is the ideal location.

We visited this site in early July 2010 and had a nice couple of days over the weekend.
We arrived quite late on Friday, 9pm due to working late and travelling but the wardens were still about and reception/shop open.
We were warmly welcomed and the fresh water tank filled up outside reception before being shown to our pitch.
We were shown the electric point, water, bins etc.
The pitch was not level and the standard fiamma levelling blocks did not lift high enough but it wasn't very far out. We were on a grass pitch as I had only booked on Thursday morning for a Friday stay. The hard standing pitches were nicely level.
We bought some bacon and eggs from the on site shop, prices were fine.
We had a walk from the site down to Youlgrave then up the river and back around, just a short one and then we picked up our bikes from the site to go to the pub in the village. £3.10 a pint for Fosters, the meals on the menu looked good but we just had some chips to keep going until we went back for a BBQ.
The access road up and down is tight, I had to fold in the mirrors on my MH to get down as a car had parked near the top tight section but they probably were not expecting more visitors to arrive.
When we were sat outside the pub we saw people driving around looking for the site. There is no sign in the town but the road is opposite the pub, downhill, down the side of the church.
Although we have full facilities onboard, my g/f wasn't keen on using a site without shower block etc. It doesn't really bother me. I was amazed at how much water we went through though!
Nice site, £11 ish a night for 2 adult C&CC members.

This site is well run by very friendly staff. I was in a Bambi and parked in the 'field' as opposed to on a hard standing as I did not require a hook up although they are available on one side of the field. The field is quite steeply sloped but the site has chocks.
The surrounding area is beautiful and very peaceful. The village of Youlgreave is within walking distance and is used to visitors. The site is on a walking trail and groups of walker often appear from over the brow of the hill. It is a fine place to stay if walking is your 'thing'.
Do ignore your sat. Nav. For the final part of the journey, keep to the A6 as advised, as the other roads are steep and narrow.
