Stayed at Sykes Farm Campsite for a few days in May and I was charged £8 a night for myself and a small tent (no electric or carparking etc). First the good points: good central location in the heart of Buttermere (although it's a tiny place anyway), good access to the local pubs and hills straight from the campsite also the campsite is situated in a lovely place with good views of the surrounding fells.
Unfortunately that's where the good points end as the facilities on the campsite are quite poor. Most frustratingly is the complete absence of any hot water on the whole site, not for washing dishes or washes your hands after the loo. This is a basic provision and I was surprised at such a basic necessity not being supplied.
Secondly, there's very few toilets for the size of the site (only one in the men's) and also only one shower for men and women although there is a spare one in the hut where you can wash up (in cold water) or sit out of bad weather. THe blocks are also quite shabby and dated although kept reasonably clean. Good supply of loo roll though.
The blocks also only have movement sensor lights that don't come on in the day so it is often fairly dark in there and you cannot see what you are doing. Another gripe is that showers cost 50p for 6 minutes which is always a bad thing in my book. A further gripe is the noise on the site from the DofE groups which are given priority on the site, other families also joined in the noise when they started which ruined the peace of the place.
All in all I felt the site had a bit of a penny pinching feel to it whilst only providing the most basic of all services. It could be improved massively and, until it ever does, I don't feel I can recommend this site or would go back to it in its current state.

Visited the campsite during a backpacking tour of the lakes last week. Campsite is situated at the easterly edge of the village past the 'Bridge inn'.
Two pubs/hotels in the village and a tea room. The site is to say the least somewhat basic for the price paid (£16. 00)(2 backpackers) no hot water for washing up, and very basic facilities.
Somewhat noisy early evening due to a large D of E group.
Would not recommend this site for other than a one night stay; next time we are in the area we will probably wild camp.

Just back from 2 glorious nights @ buttermere, staying at Sykes farm. It was a brilliant break, the farmer, although full when we arrived very kindly allowed us to pitch up our tent. He and his wife are very friendly and hard working.
We had amazing sunshine and the lakes were so peaceful. All in all we had no complaints. Except inconsiderate drunks in the evening sat shouting as if they were sat in their own backyard. But I don't see how the owners could prevent that.
If you want a rustic break away from it all - go to Sykes farm.

A small group of us stayed here during June 2013. There are quite a few reviews here already and I would say they are fair description of this site. The farmer was helpful, not the biggest toilet block you've ever seen, a bit uneven ground but stunning views. There is a stream running through the site so if you like the sound of running water then that's a bonus but there are midges about, at least in June.
We paid 8 pounds per person per night which seems reasonable to me. It was a busy weekend which was a bit surprising as the weather was very unsettled. The biggest drawback for me was no hot water for washing dishes. Two pubs/bars are within a hundred yards and provide a good atmosphere. The car park is somewhat amusing in that there are 2 long thin areas. The first is pay and display which is empty and the second is free for the campers and was jam packed when we were there. Distance from car to tent is down to you but no more than a hundred yards. Bins are emptied daily.
Walks are plentiful and overall nothing really wrong with this site if you want fresh air, views and a good time.

Brilliant location, ideal for walkers and backpackers. We stayed at this site in May 2013.
You do have to park your car in the car park opposite and carry your belongings over a small bridge to the site. Facilities are very basic and showers a bit hit and miss sometimes worked and sometimes did not but ensure you inform the owner and they will reimburse you your 50 pence.
Located in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Their are 2 hotels/pubs one of which is dog friendly (The Bridge) ideal for our Labrador. The village has no shops for provisions so ensure you take the essentials with you.
Ideal camp site in the heart of Buttermere and the lake a short walk away, Walker's paradise with plenty of mountains and low level walks within easy reach. We went up Haystacks while we stayed at this site.
Definitely be back again in the near future. Well worth a visit.

Have used this campsite a lot in the past but no more, I counted at least 90 tents crammed onto a site for 40, the whole campsite was kept awake by drunks (2 pubs nearby) then my tent was ripped to shreds by the sheep grazing in the field!
Also beware of the wind and rain, have had my tent blown down many times particularly around September time.
Only 2 ladies toilets which were dirty, the shower didn't work well. The car park is away from the camp area, good because it makes the campsite quieter as long as you don't mind carrying everything (fun when your tent has collapsed in gales and horizontal rain)

I've stayed here a number of times, always as a solo backpacker so a small tent and no car and I avoid busy times. So while I can understand the poor experiences some reviewers have (limited number of toilets/showers, long walk from the car, few spots for a sheltered level pitch) I've never been troubled by these.
I like the fact that cars cant drive onto the site, and the rough hilly field gives it a bit of a 'wild camping' feel.
Toilets and showers are very basic but I've always found them acceptably clean, the shower in the 'washing up' hut is preferred.
Whenever I've met the owners, either when paying at the farm house or when the farmer has been walking round this site they've been friendly and open for a chat.
A great location for walking, with stunning views from the site. Both the Bridge and Fish Hotels have good local ales and food. I tend to eat in the Fish where there's more room, then retire to the more cosy Bridge for a few pints.
There's also a cafe, but no shops for many miles so you'll have to bring all you need. Buttermere is served by a bus from Keswick Easter - October.

Lovely spot but be warned, no hot water (apart from shower). We were there for 3 days and the loos were not cleaned and if you have a dog then note, both the pubs have a no dogs policy.
The car is parked in a car park on the opposite side of the stream to the field so you have to carry your gear to your chosen spot.
Not a problem if your travelling light.

Visited this site in early April. The tents were well spaced and we managed to get a pitch right by the stream. The forecast dry and remained so but pitching by the stream could be a problem in wet weather. The owner was friendly and welcoming. The facilities were basic but clean.
After pitching we went for a walk and came back to find a middle aged couple erecting 5 or 6 pop up tents right behind ours. The woman announced that the rugby team were coming down to celebrate and hoped we wouldn't find it too noisy. The team and accompanying teenagers were not that bad actually, but the couple and their immediate family were a nightmare.
The problem with this site - and we really wanted to like the site - is the owner doesn't check on the numbers pitching, where they are pitching or monitor the noise at night. The other thing is that some of this group removed their tents before the owner came round to collect fees. We reckon the owner is too pleasant and trusting and people take advantage.
It's a pity because it's a lovely area and this site has the potential to be fantastic.
Would we go back? Yes; out of BBQ season! We would rate it 10 out 10 had the management of the site been better.

Stayed here over Easter, took a bit of a chance as they don't take bookings and we drove up from London. Fantastic location, and a really scenic site.
It did get very crowded at the start of the Easter weekend, the farmer didn't seem to be stopping people when the site was clearly full. Facilities pretty basic and not enough when the site was full.
Plus points: beautiful location and views, great walks from the site (High Stile ridge, and a walk down Crummock Water and swimming from the little headland among the highlights for us). Stream for the kids to play in, and keep stuff cool. Nice pitches with views on the knoll, or by the stream. No cars on the site, so very safe.
Downside: no hot water apart from showers and not really enough loos. No freezer facility for ice packs, and no shop within about 10 miles.
Pitches not marked, so you could come back to find someone pitched right on top of you. It did get very busy, and a few large family parties barbecuing , drinking and shouting all day long
All in all, though, it was Easter in the Lakes, and Buttermere probably wasn't as heaving as Ambleside. We had a lovely time here.
