 Arrived here unplanned whilst on a backpacking trip to see the Rannerdale bluebells, the cafe at Syke Farm, which is some distance from the camping field, was shut, and a profusion of notices on the site gave conflicting information about late arrivals.
Whilst reading a sign in the farmyard, an elderly lady approached me - she had run the site when I had last visited about three decades ago. She offered to take my money, but a man approached, presumably the farm owner, he proceeded to lambast me for bothering her! I bit my tongue as I didn't fancy being kicked off the site.
By way of contrast, the staff in the cafe were friendly when I paid for my pitch the following morning.
Now down to the site itself, a decent sized field with variable ground, some good flat areas and also some hidden corners amongst the rocky knolls for those who prefer to tuck themselves away. The location is delightful, a stream runs beside the site, nearby woods offer some shelter, and the fells rear up all sides, must be one of the most stunning spots in England. The ground wasn't boggy, and took the pegs well.
Facilities were basic but decent. I'm not one to fuss over such things as long as they are clean, which they were.
There are two pubs and a cafe nearby - I enjoyed a burger and a couple of excellent pints on the terrace of the nearby Bridge Inn.
Buttermere is an excellent centre for walking, whether you want to walk along the shores of Buttermere and Crummock Water, or climb the higher fells, such as Grasmoor or the High Stile ridge. Finally, the Rannerdale bluebells in mid May are spectacular, worth a visit in their own right.

Still a great site after 25 years since last visit.
Please amend this website to show campervans accepted!
Refurbed small toilet/shower block is great, 50p for shower. V modern, I was surprised. Hot water, and everything working perfectly.
No electric hook up, and only small campers accepted(on car park), but campsite website needs to be clearer that campers catered for.
Terrain undulating for tents, be prepared when busy, but Buttermere is possibly the No1 location in the Lakes for views, facilities, and brilliance, so the option of camping is a true godsend.
Issues with phone not being answered, but I'd say, just turn up! Exceptional basic site. And dirt cheap!

Going to be honest - I LOVE this site. Absolutely perfect for a few days away from the madness.
Great walks all available from the site including gentler ones round the lake, and more rugged ones up the nearby mountains.
Both Buttermere and Crummock are in easy walking distance.
Facilities are basic but well kept and more than adequate.
Fantastic site!

A wonderful location with great customer service.
Very easy going staff with relaxed and kind service in the cafe.
Great food in the cafe.
Will definitely make a return trip here.

Syke Farm Campsite is found in the village of Buttermere in The Lake District, which is home to some of the best lakes, mountains and walks in England. At the head of the Buttermere valley, is Haystacks, which is where Alfred Wainwright’s ashes are scattered. The campsite itself nestles on the land between the two lakes, Buttermere and Crummock Water.
It is a tranquil and peaceful area, with skies dark enough for the keenest stargazer, and yet boasts two cafes and two pubs, both of which offer accommodation, as well as good food and drinks.
While the campsite is predominately aimed at tent campers, up to 6 motorhomes can be accommodated on level hard standing at the same prices as tents, how’s that for a bargain! There is no electric hook up, and when compared to some sites, the amenities are basic, but that is more than adequately compensated for by it’s stunning location.
The site has a toilet block with showers. There is also a shelter, with a shower and toilet. All of the showers on the campsite cost 50p for 5 minutes of hot water.
The Syke Farm tearoom offers people using the campsite a full English Breakfast between 9am and 11am for only £5, and will also make up packed lunches by request.
Things To Do.
Just up the valley, the Via Ferrata and mine tours at Honister slate mine are great to explore, Located at the head of Honister Pass, Honister is also the last working slate mine in England. Remember that roads in the Lake District can be narrow, steep and twisty – even the A roads. The Honister Pass between Borrowdale and Buttermere is 1 in 4, so best not attempted in a larger motorhome.
Whinlatter Forest has lots of walks, cycle tracks and also a Go Ape high tree climb. Both these places are within 20 minutes drive from the campsite.
If walking and wildlife are your interests, then you’re in luck, Buttermere is home to one of the foremost experts on the subject, and he conducts guided walks around the region.
The Fish Inn is the closest pub to the campsite, and is regarded as one of the oldest Inns in the Lake District. There are plenty of walks in and around Buttermere, whether you are keen hill walker or just someone who likes a stroll in beautiful, unspoilt surroundings.
Within the village itself is the Bridge Hotel (c1735) which stands on a site which has been occupied for 1000 years.
St James’ Church on the hillside above the village, dates from 1841, and has a memorial to famous guidebook author, and Lake District walker, Alfred Wainwright.
Buttermere Lake is one of the smaller lakes in this area, measuring just 1 ½ miles long, and ¾ miles wide, but what it lacks in size it makes up for with its location. Surrounded by dairy pastures, forests, and low and high fells, it’s an ideal spot to explore. The Lake and surrounding area is managed by the National Trust, who offer boating and fishing permits to visitors. There’s also a walk around the lake, with picnic spots available en route, Listed as a walk of 4. 5 miles, it should take around 2 hours to complete, but is an easy walk for all to enjoy.
There is a bus route into the village, but it is seasonal.

A lovely little campsite tucked away behind a car park in the village. Pitches are varied and some are by a stream. No need to book.
Friendly at the nearby cafe where campers get a discount. Toilets have been recently done up. Simple but absolutely fine for £8 a night. No charge for pets :).
My only small bug bear were fellow campers not respecting the peaceful environment and spoiling it for others. Be aware you can’t bring your car in so lifting tent and equipment isn’t fun in wet weather.
I’m returning again in 3 weeks - the area is stunning.

Syke Farm is a beautiful little campsite and I'm very glad we took a chance on it after reading mixed reviews.
It's hidden away at the end of a public car park behind the Fish Inn with views of the fells both sides of Buttermere and Crummock Water. A stream runs the length of the site. There's a rocky outcrop in the middle (with space for a few smaller tents) with flat areas to left and right.
The right end is where the facilities are and where the majority of DoE trips pitched up, whereas the opposite end seemed to attract families and bigger tents. The stream has some small minnows which seemed to be appealing to many of the kids who would fish for them with nets. It also seems to attract gnats or similar, but despite the proximity to the water they weren't a major issue and the views paid for the minor nuisance they created sitting outside watching the sunset.
The facilities are basic but very good quality. One shower cubicle and two toilets in the gents and I believe similar in the ladies. They've clearly been modernised recently and were kept clean. 50p gives 7 minutes of decently hot water. There's also a separate kitchen building which also has one shower and one toilet (plus a sink for washing up) and a kettle. That's it facilities wise - it's basic. And it's where the site loses 2 stars - whilst there weren't queues around the block, there was definitely the odd squabble over waits for the shower.
To my surprise, despite the number of DoE trips and visiting during the first week of summer holiday I found that noise and poor behaviour of other campers really wasn't an issue. In 10 nights there I only heard a group getting a little loud once, and someone (I don't know whether the owners or another camper) had a word at 11pm - noise stopped. It really is a peaceful site.
A couple of hundred yards down the road are the Skye Farm tearooms who do a subsidised breakfast for campers. Very good food, very reasonably priced. And wifi too (mobile signal is very hit and miss on the site. )
Location wise, most people come in via the Newlands Pass - not a difficult mountain pass, but not one for nervous drivers. That's the quickest way to Keswick (about 25 minutes away. )
The immediate area is a walkers heaven with options straight out of the door ranging from the Buttermere lake side track to the big fells - Grasmoor, Robinson, Haystacks etc are all on the doorstep. It's a beautiful area and well worth exploring.
I had reservations about the facilities and the risk of noise from DoE trips before we went. The former is a minor issue and the latter a complete non-issue. A great campsite that's off the beaten track and we'll be going back.

We've stayed here twice with our two young children and found it awesome. Well mainly the views, very basic facilities which I think is what camping should be and 2 nice pubs a stones throw away.
Loved the sheep roaming around amongst the tents and generally a nice, quiet site. Showers were 50p per minute and that's the only source of hot water! Just one outside tap to wash up with.
Think we were charged about £20 a night which is excessive but worth it for the breathtaking scenery and view of scarfell. Very annoying/ exhausting having to carry belongings from car park to site over bridge and slippery rocks with toddlers but worth it!
Also beware of hidden stream just behind tents as can get fairly deep. Need to keep an eye on young children. Farmer/ owner is friendly.

This campsite is in a wonderful location--which is presumably why its owners can get away with such limited investment in its facilities and maintenance.
I'm very happy with basic facilities and have no need of shops, information huts etc, but the capacity of the toilet/wash blocks is seriously inadequate considering the numbers staying on the site at this peak time of year.
The condition and cleanliness of the facilities is pretty poor and there are significant amounts of litter around the site.
Whilst this latter is obviously the direct fault of inconsiderate campers, the site owner's failure to clean up just makes it more likely that people will not trouble to clean up after themselves.

Spent 1 night with my friend and my dog. After our walk we comeback to another tent pitched so close the guyropes crossed. We had to get a bit nasty as the noise was unrealistic at 11 pm.
The carpark is way too small when the site is only 1/2 full. You do have to carry all your kit through 2 gates and a small bridge (krypton factor here we come).
Good dog friendly pub and brilliant location.
