We stayed for three nights in the middle of August and thought the campsite was great. We expected it to be too busy, but with pitches located all around a central hill, you have plenty of choice whether you pitch close to others or tucked away on flat parts of the central area. The ground was in good condition considering that there had been a lot of rain in the previous few days.
Facilities - The toilet block is pretty basic, but we didn't have to wait for the shower for any length of time. The owners kept it clean the whole time we were there. There's also a shower and sink in a cabin shelter adjacent to it which is a nice idea. It does cost 50p for a shower so remember to stock up on coins.
Location - Amazing spot. Walks around Buttermere, Craddock Water and up the surrounding hills start from the campsite's location. The view from the campsite itself it great too, with a river running along the base.
Parking - The campsite car park at the entrance to the site has just enough spaces, and it was nice to not have cars driving around amongst the pitches.
The only negative thing we found was the lack of a shop within 10 miles or so that sold basics such as milk or bread. The two cafes are really nice, and we ate in the Fish Hotel once which was great, but had to drive a distance to pick up milk for a cup of tea.
Brilliant campsite, would wholeheartedly recommend it.

What a lovely site! Perfect location! 10 out of 10. Right slap bang in the middle of Buttermere Water and Crummock Lake. Each lake is only a few minutes walk away, Crummock Lake being closest and bar my far my favourite out of the two. Absolutely stunning scenery!
There are toilets and showers. They are clean and functional, what more do you need?
This is one of my all time favourite campsites (bar the fact campfires aren't allowed, but you can't have everything!). For photoghraphers, walkers and families, the location is fantastic! :D

This is a back to basics campsite, the main attraction is its idyllic location in Buttermere village, right between Buttermere lake and Crummock water, with lots of magnificent walking straight from your tent.
There are no shops in the area, so make sure you bring all your provisions with you. They don't take bookings and it can get busy at peak times - the main problem being restricted parking space.
Access to the campsite is via the main Buttermere village car park, between The Bridge hotel and The Fish hotel, and then through the gate at the end of the car park.
There are no vehicles allowed on the actual campsite, you park up and then carry your gear over a footbridge. A lot of the site is quite uneven and can get quite boggy in places so you need to scout around to find a dry, level(ish) area.
Toilets and showers are minimal and basic, the shower needs 50p to operate. There are better toilets in the near by car park.
There is also a nice stone cabin with a sink and a picnic bench, plus an extra toilet and shower cubicle.
There are two good hotel/pub bars a very short walk from the site, The Bridge and The Fish. Both serve good real ales, and food until about 9. Just the thing after a good day on the fells. Also The farm that owns the site make their own delicious ice cream, you've got to try it!

Beautiful setting and great walking straight from the campsite.
Facilities very basic but good enough for long weekend.
Return trip recently but found it to be very overcrowded and lots of groups of lads drinking much of the night- not great for families.
Don't underestimate what other reviews have said about the wind - have now had 2 tents blown down and would not take large tent again.
Overall amazing situation of site but pitch carefully and check the weather forecast first!

We stayed here in June when thankfully the weather was really good and the site was busy, still no excuse for not frequently cleaning the tiny toilets!
Good points are.
The campsite is in a stunning location
Two great pubs within minutes walking distance, that's where the good points end,
Bad points.
1 shower 1 toilet, there was always a long queue, in the gents urine was free flowing from the urinal and leaking toilets under the sinks and towards the door, and also into the shower cubical. In 4 days they weren't cleaned, we have never even seen public toilets this bad, we found most people used the public ones in the car park a short distance away behind the Fish Hotel. There is a new kitchen/hut on the site containing a toilet and a shower but these are literally in the same room as a sink and dinning table, so felt extremely uncomfortable using them if somebody was eating there, a new toilet block is definitely required!
Site was quite hilly, it was hard to find a flat spot.
Take midge repellent, we got eaten alive!
Toilets aside it was a amazing holiday

Stayed here with a group as part of a long distance walk (Inn Way). If you are on foot and using an OS map to find the place, don't walk up the hill, the entrance to the site is to the right of the Fish Hotel! If you have a car you have to leave it in the small car park and carry your gear over a little bridge. The site isn't very big and there aren't many flat pitches. We had been pre warned about the winds, and what others say is true, the wind really does howl at night - we all had pretty small tents and still were relieved they stayed put.
The farmer was very helpful and didn't mind at all that we were all guys and not DofE. At £6 pretty reasonable but fair given the lack of facilities.
Good things: Location, Buttermere is stunning and was very quiet when we were there. Bridge Hotel is great for food and Beer. Not so sure about the Fish Hotel but we did pop in for a swift half and it seemed ok if empty. Farmer was helpful and easy going. Hostel up the road was happy to make us packed lunches and even sold us some bread for breakfast. One really good thing about this site is the small shelter hut. It contains an extra shower / toilet and a sink for washing up (no hot water) as well as a picnic bench and area for stoves. When busy it would be difficult to find a slot when it's free but we found it literally saved our bacon as it was raining in the morning and provided us somewhere dry to cook and eat our breakfast. It helped that the site was pretty much empty. In busy periods DofE groups get priority use of the hut.
Bad things: Not much good if you rely on having a car close at hand. Quite hilly - flat parts tend to be either exposed (top of slope) or boggy (bottom of slope by river). Toilet blocks are very basic - showers are 50p. I used the one in the shelter which was fine. The field has sheep in it (we weren't bothered by this but it may be an issue for some)
Overall, if you want a basic site in a great location with a good pub nearby, or a convenient stop over on a backpacking holiday / DofE expedition then this is ideal. If you like your creature comforts or have a car full of gear and arn't totally confident your tent can withstand gale force winds then maybe give it a miss.

Stayed here when supervising a Duke of Edinburgh's Gold group. As others have said, this site is quite difficult if it is particularly wet and windy, especially if there are lots of others camping.
There are several very hilly parts of the site, which is unlit except for the toilet block, and those areas which aren't hilly are really quite exposed if the wind blows in certain directions - there was a flattened dome-style tent on the lower section by the river when we arrived, however it had been gusting 60mph winds the night previous.
We ended up taking the lesser of two evils and pitching on a slope behind one of the hills, which provided shelter from the winds when we pitched, with back into the projected winds for the next day (due to be southerly).
This worked quite well, and all the tents in our party stayed upright despite a few gusts during the night, but believe me when the wind is blowing it really does howl down the valley so make absolutely sure you've pitched properly and pegged down!
Slightly disappointed by the facilities, showers were OK but for 50p they weren't especially hot or powerful. The site gets extremely muddy in wet weather, to the point that waterproofs and gaiters were required at all times if you wanted to stay anything remotely resembling clean!
Ideally located for walks in and around the area, and would probably be a really nice (but popular, I expect) site in the summer months.
Can definitely recommend the Bridge Hotel - but be aware they stop serving at 9.30 sharp, so get there early if you want to get a table. Wasn't too impressed by the hospitality or atmosphere at the Fish Inn, but might have been a one off.

Buttermere is a beautiful area in which to camp, and this site, as other reviews mention, is basic but perfectly adequate if it's just you and your tent and you plan to do lots of walking. It's situated at the bottom of the village, not many available spaces to park the car although when my two brothers and I went there was only other one tent there. It is difficult to find a decent pitch, as the ground is very hilly and tends to become muddy at the lower end of the site. There is a toilet block with (in the mens) a urinal, toilet, shower, two sinks, mirror and shaver point. There is also an additional building with table, benches, additional toilet and shower, sink and electrical sockets. You can wash your pots and pans etc in here although you'll have to boil some water as there is no hot water on the site except the showers (50p)and you are allowed to shelter and cook in here in severe weather if you wish. There are plenty of sheep roaming the site so don't leave your tent open! There can't be many places in Britain where you can see as many stars as you can here, as there is no lighting apart from the toilet block which is on a timer and the nearby pubs. To sit under the stars listening to the rushing water, owls and foxes was just beautiful. Beautiful scenery, lovely easy walk round the lake, nearby Scale Force is fantastic, and of course Haystacks and other mountains. Crummock Water nearby. Site owner very friendly nice old chap. Definitely worth a return. Just £6.00 per person per night.

Basic site, welcoming owners, stunning views.
A great weekend but not a huge amount to do with the site, more the location and the company.
The food at the Bridge is good, shame the beer cellar had been flooded, leaving just a mediocre Black Sheep best. Beer at the Fish Inn fine.
There were sufficiently dry-ish and mostly level bits to pitch on for 10 or so tents over the site.
Advice
-Take a tent that really can stand the weather, especially the wind.
-Might not be the best for families, the facilities are OK but basic, wouldn't like to be there at high season.
-Try the Kirkstile Inn near Loweswater. What a corker! great food, beer brewed on premises. On foot its a 16k round trip day walk (go over Mellbreck come back past Crummock water) or 10-15 mins in the car.
