We visited this site at the end of August and were welcomed by the owners and their family later in the day, they had already advised us to just turn up and pitch and they would see us later. The owners are very friendly and offered loads of advice, they were on site every evening to talk to people and collect fees.
We were lucky to pitch at the top of the field with fantastic views down to the sea in a level pitch. There was a slope in the middle of the field but everybody had pitched around the edge and the centre had become a general play area. The site is split into two fields with the showers and toilets are in the first, this is a very basic toilet block a bit like a glorified shed but 6 toilets and 6 showers to go round was more than enough even though the site was busy.
Good location, quiet and clean. We will definitely be returning when we can.

We had a lovely time here when we visited in July 2013. Owners are very friendly, drive in and park wherever you like around the outside of two fields, the centre of the fields are left empty for children to play etc. We went into the second field so that we could have a seaview.
The facilities were basic, but had everything that we needed, showers, toilets and wash up area were only in one field, but the walk did not matter to us. Didn't have to queue for the showers. If we had one very minor criticism it would be that the washing up area could do with being undercover, must be a pain when it is hammering it with rain! However, this would not stop us from visiting again. No children's playground, but as said previously, the areas in the centres of the fields are for children to make their own fun. There are freezers for you to freeze your iceblocks. No shop, but there is a sainsbury at Helston and Porthleven has a decent sized coop.
No light pollution if you like stargazing in the evening and they are happy for you to have a campfire, which is important to us. Nothing better that sitting by a warm fire, with a tipple in your hand watching the night sky.
Nice walk into Porthleven and the town itself has some great little shops and decent places to eat if you don't fancy cooking for yourself. Very little in Helston.
We will go back to Penrose at sometime in the near future.

This is a great site above the village of Porthleven, with very friendly owners. It is minimal in terms of facilities (e. G. No hookup) and consists of two open fields with, from most places, great views of the sea. Six (I think) toilets and five showers meant no queues, with plenty of hot water and always clean (though they got hot inside in the sun). Freezing facilities and electricity available in nearby barn (e. G. For phone charging). Porthleven about ten mins walk away with good pubs (best are Ship and Atlantic) and plenty of places to eat. Site fee £10 per night for two of us. Highly recommended, though I understand it can get busy in the school holidays. The nearby airfield is a Navy training base, so there's frequent helicopters and planes overhead - but that didn't bother us.

This is so much more than just a campsite. The owners are extremely welcoming and do everything they can to make the experience enjoyable for all. We've been going for the last few years and whilst seen it get busier this has been really well managed by facilities increased to ensure that everyone is catered for. The location is excellent, whether you want a sea view or views of the Cornish countryside the site is so flexible that you can pitch where you like.

We stayed for a week at the end of July and were very fortunate to have the most amazing weather for virtually the whole week.
The campsite is fantastic! We arrived to a couple of nearly empty, fairly level large grassy fields. Perfect for pitching tents. We chose to be in the second field, furthest away from the facilities but with the best views of the sea (look at their website at the top right picture. That's us!) There is now a newly constructed shower and loo block so a total of 5 showers and 6 toilets. There is almost unlimited hot water and what's more its free. No rip-off 50p charge for a couple of minutes here! There are also 4 washing up sinks and a couple of drinking water taps. There is a notice board with helpful information and a daily updated weather forecast. If you are lucky you may even get some of the delicious new potatoes left by the owners whose business is potato farming. The facilities are kept amazingly clean by the ubiquitous Wendy, a very lovely lady, and her constant companion the unbelievably cute Star (toy poodle in case your wondering!)Wendy regularly patrols the campsite chatting with the campers and offering excellent advice on what to see and where to go.
There is a route down to the coast which takes literally 5 minutes and you can easily walk into Porthleven to the shops and other facilities in the very beautiful harbour town.
Overall the campsite is exactly what we wanted. Quiet and peaceful and very well looked-after. Its also very reasonably priced; two adults and two children comes to £15 a night with no other extra charges for the tent, dog, car etc etc. There are no hook ups but this did not bother us and infact keeps it to 'proper campers' rather than those who bring everything from home.
The review below does not I believe represent a fair reflection of this campsite. Firstly, it was out of season and secondly they were lucky to get a caravan on the site. Normally they are not allowed so a favour had obviously been granted by the owners to the reviewer. I'll leave it at that.
Wendy, thank you so much for our stay. We enjoyed every minute of it and would love to return!
Neil. Veronika, Luke, Rachael and Gimli!

What a fabulous site, certainly not a 'Newquay' replica! The toilets and showers were the cleanest I have ever come across. We were walking the S. W coast path and this proved an excellent base, the car sat unused for 2 days. Martin and his family are extremely friendly and helpful, even leaving potatoes out for the campers. Lots of space and freedom to choose where to camp, with seaviews, make this one of my favourite sites to date. We will return.

We stayed here in July only for a long weekend (fri to Mon) with my partner and two children.
I have to say how clean the toilets and shower facilities were and so nice to see them being cleaned so often, which is such a luxury on a campsite and when camping with small children. There was other familes here also which was great for the kids as they made friends and memories.
This campsite is in an ideal location and easy to find and Martin (campsite owner) recommended us to some great family restaurants only 5mins away.
I would highly recommend this campsite as being VERY family friendly and in a family friendly location, nothing like Newquay!
We look forward to another long weekend at the end of August.

I can agree with all of the above reviews indeed this was my second visit. It' was a good site for children and very relaxed however times have changed and this place is turning out to be a new Newquay.
We arrived and pitched up then a van turned up and erected a full sized yurt, a little later on a coach arrived with the yurt dwellers some 20 or so 20 somethings complete with a pick up truck full of booze from bottles to kegs of beer, BBQ and firewood. The generator started at 8 pm and they all went out in taxis, they arrived back at camp at 2 am, the music started and so the party began. Across the field were some young girls doing their Duke of Edinburgh award and they, their teacher chaperone and us other campers got no sleep at all. When we asked if they would turn down the music we were met with abuse. We actually went home at 4am as we live the other side of helston so no big journey. We were supposed to stay until Wednesday but I went back and got the caravan and took it elsewhere. Very sad to see this site go this way but I imagine the party animals will pay more than us mere campers. Looks like the curse of Newquay is headed our way.
We did of course complain and the site owner Martin came down with the 'organiser' of the party he gave a well rehearsed apology and said they were leaving that day, that was untrue as we had friends that stayed on and they told us the party was going to continue until Monday morning.
I want to make it clear that when I say 'the apology wasn't heartfelt and felt it was well rehersed', I want to make it clear that that was from the organiser of the stag party, not Martin the camp site owner, who did apologise most sincerely.
I would think very carefully about going their if you have children double check with the site owners, if there is a party forget it.
|
Management response: We let both parties use our facilities out of season as a favour because it was 'Helston Flora' and do not allow stag parties or caravan groups on site during July and August. We apologise again for any disruption. |

Visited with our 3 children, 6, 6 and 4 years old. Campsite is what most sites start at and has yet to be developed into one that offers electric hook ups, play areas, hard standings for caravans and I for one hope it stays as it is.
It is lovely. It is a flat grass field with large open space and views to the sea. Nearby coastal walks. No pitches marked out which was new to us and we could spread out, our guide ropes could be extended properly rather than annoying anyone nearby (we chose a space away from the shower block so had no one nearby).
The price was reasonable and the owners friendly. There was no additional charges for extra small tents/cars/gazebos, so prices easy to work out per adult and per child.
The shower block was cleaned regularly and it had showers/toilets/sink for dishes/outside shower for wet suits.
Kids played in the open space with others from the site.
There are local shops - adults could walk to the village and back but we took the car as it would have been a bit far for our 3 kids.

This is a really lovely site with fantastic sea views for those who like basic camping (no hook ups, no hard standing, etc). We had our pick of 3 large fields and had ample pitch space.
There were plenty of free range children, the odd campfire or two and a relaxed atmosphere.
The facilities are very limited - only 3 loo's and 2 showers, which did mean queues at busy times, but they were clean and there was buckets of hot water at all times.
Lisa, the lady who collected the rent was very friendly and helpful. We will definitely return.
Thanks for a lovely holiday!
