Where to start with this one. What an awful site. As said in a previous review payment is asked for in advance and I can see why as I to would have left immediately had I not pre-paid. This has the makings of a good site if it were properly run. Sadly it is not. I asked when booking if there was a pub within walking distance which there was but it was closed. Never mind we thought, there are 3 bars. 2 of these were closed. The other was holding a Miss England event. There must have been 250 or more people in the sweatiest environment I have ever been in. Truly awful. Next the electricity which I paid £4. 50 (yes £4. 50) for continually tripped. Finally the toilet and shower block were a disgrace. The shower tray started to fill with dirty water as I was showering indicating the trap had not been cleaned in weeks maybe months. The toilets had no loo brushes in and were disgusting. If I were offered a stay on this terrible site for nothing I would decline. Unfortunately I paid £19. 50 for one night. If anybody thinks I habitually give poor reviews please read others I have given. I give credit where credit is due but do not hesitate to criticise when warranted.

Just returned from 2 nights camping in a non-electric pitch.

On arrival we were directed to 2 different areas in which we could choose our pitch, we decided on a pitch in a small clearing in which there was only 2 other tents, a further 3 pitched after us but there was still a large clearing for the kids to play in.

Behind us was a woods which the kids 3 & 7 absolutely loved, plus we could see them at all times so could give them some freedom to explore.

After setting up we went for a walk around the estate, which was quite obviously a very considerable country pile in its heyday. There were lots of families playing ball games in wide open spaces and lovely calm areas down by the river, plus the bonus of a small grass airstrip just behind us so we got to watch small planes taking off and landing.

There was a brand new kids trail play area plus the usual swings and slide play area, the kids were more than happy with them. There is also tennis courts which can be hired for £5 an hour.

There was a regular free trailer ride around the estate which was given a level of excitement for the kids by the stories of large spiders landing on the roof and speeding donuts (15mph) in the meadow.

The toilet shower block was quite typical, I can only comment on the one nearest camping as its the only one we used, I can't imagine it was further than 5 min from any pitch and even if the floors were often wet or muddy the rest was always clean with toilet paper and plenty of hot water.

We went for Sunday lunch in the hall which was decent and reasonably priced. There is also a beer wagon and food truck which were both reasonably priced and located quite centrally for everybody.

Didn't leave the site but there was a pub just outside the gates.

All in all a great site for families, staff were all friendly and helpful.

Rang for a last minute night away and despite wanting to arrive within 3 hours I was asked for full payment up front. No surprise once we arrived though as we would have left immediately if we hadn't have paid!

We were crammed into a very small space with little privacy from our neighbours. The rubbish bins were overflowing, sink flooded and the shower / toilet block was quite a distance from the site. Not that we used them due to the litter and cleanliness of the place.

I complained about the lack of space to the receptionist who asked one of her staff on the radio to come and have a look. He never came and her tone was very patronising.

Won't be coming back. The grounds and house were lovely!

Just returned from a 3night bank holiday stay.

When arrived was met by the nice warden who showed us to our choice of pitch. It was getting really busy and filling up quickly when we left for a walk round the beautiful grounds and house.

When we returned well!it was like a shanty town!tents all over and vans guide ropes nearly touching our van and cars parked very close to units. Not good for fire safety !

On visiting the porta toilets they was muck every where toilets blocked and people washing bbqs in the sink !the shower were the same with sludge in the shower trays and the hot water was at boiling point!

When I reported to the staff they said its was due to extra campers on site and the water was very hot as if they turned it down then it would be cold

My advice would be, stay away at busy times use your own facilities and just visit kellham hall to see the amazing building and camp else where.

We decided to book Kelham for a 1 night stay to try out our new tent, as it's not too far to travel. Our first impressions were of the magnificent hall itself. A very beautiful and grand building. We could see the tent pitch on the drive up to the hall, and saw how much space there was. The lady on reception was very helpful, and came outside to point out where our pitch was. We were a little dubious that our rather large tent plus porch would fit in the space left by the neighbouring tent and caravan, but it did, just. We used the electric hook up, which worked perfectly. There were plenty of toilets, and although the floor was a little grassy and muddy, the sinks and toilets were clean. I peeked into the showers, but didn't use as we were only staying the night, these were also clean. The walks around the hall are beautiful, and could see that fishing was available in the nearby lake. We have 4 children who thoroughly enjoyed the open space the tent field provided, and was perfect for cycling and ball games. There is also a small but perfectly adequate playground. The hall itself serves food, which we didn't try so I can't comment on the quality. We didn't explore outside the hall grounds either, so I'm not sure what the surrounding area has to offer. We definitely won't hesitate coming back, a great weekend had by all.

Just returned from a 3 night break at Kelham hall. It was our first trip out in our new caravan.

On arrival we were met by the owner who showed us to our pitch, which was conveniently near the kids play area. There are lots of positives about this place. Great touring area with lots of space in front of pitch for kids to run around. Nice play area with swings, climbing frame etc, and also an indoor play room.

Great woodland walks and gardens to look around. Our kids loved the rides around the estate in the owners trailer! Great fun and a great host!

Shower/toilet facilities were a little primitive and definitely could've been cleaner, although we preferred to try out our own shower/toilet this time around.

We found the staff very friendly, especially the owner ( lovely chap)who gave us a great commentary on the tour around the grounds.

Would've liked to of seen some sort of security/barrier at the entrance.

All in all, we found this site very relaxing, great for the kids and would loved to of stayed another couple of nights.

Our second outing in the new tent, the hall and grounds are great, and if you have children and dogs fantastic place to visit with small play area, well maintained walks and tennis courts. The area to camp on is a field so can be uneven, and we were placed next to a small area of apple trees which were shedding there fruit also field had just been mowed, also the weather was damp and rainy; so keeping grass out of tent was hard.

There are 2 lots of showers and toilets, one attached to the hall which are warm and fit for purpose, but do look like a old school changing rooms, the others are very basic, and are in what looks like portacabins, the womens showers did not work and the toilets are very basic and easily blocked, they were not regularly checked and were often in a mess with wet grass and toilet paper all over the floors, if the other people using them had been a little more careful they would have been usable but not every one has the same standards, so thank god for 'shewee' in the night.

The reception staff are lovely and very helpful and do try to help with any issues taken to them.

Over all we would return but just for a nigth as it is only half hour away from home, and hope for better weather.

Friends of ours had booked a long weekend here and as we have just obtained our first caravan, we decided to go on our first overnight stay and meet up with them for the Saturday evening. We are experienced campers with tents, but never a caravan.

On arrival we were greeted by a very helpful receptionist, who gave us all the information about the site. She then directed us to where our friends were and we pitched up. The site has lovely grounds, a gorgeous country hall and is a nice place for walking. The river runs through the back, and fishing is available, for a charge. The water supply is easily obtainable, on the side of a small pavilion. On a quitter night, this place would be lovely, but here come the negatives.

There are two toilet and shower blocks; one in the field and one attached to the main building. The one in the field is portakabin style, and was filthy. The men in our group complained about how dirty their actual toilets were, in the ladies it was the floor and sinks. Toilet roll dispensers are in place, but there was more tissue on the floor than in the dispensers. Saturday it rained mid afternoon, so we made allowances, but when it was still like it on Sunday it was obvious they weren't cleaned well, if at all.

Using electric hook up was a first for me, I've always camped without it. So I couldn't get my head around junction boxes laying on the floor in quite long wet grass. I expected a post with the box attached? I could see a couple like that on the far side of the site, but not where we were.

The next part is not the fault of the site, but I have never stayed on such a noisy site! All night long there were dogs barking, people shouting, karaoke, arguments, people going to the toilet and talking so loud I could hear every word inside the caravan with all the windows closed! There must've been an audition tent for the Jeremy Kyle Show next door to us, as a young child kept screaming at his father to get out of the tent, with foul language from the child and the parents. There didn't seem to be any of the respect I'm so used to on campsites.

(There was a large group of tents, about thirty or so, from a football club on the far side of the field. Lots of kids, a huge food gazebo and they played footy most of the time. If any of you guys are reading this, your kids were all very polite, well behaved, and your noise was a normal sort of noise and didn't bother us at all, so don't think my negativity is aimed at you).

This wouldn't deter me from going back though, I just would pitch a bit further away from Chavdom!

It was our first tentative trip in our caravan on Whit Bank Holiday. We chose Kelham Hall as it looked pleasant from their own website page and wasn't too far away from our Derbyshire home for a first caravan experience.

The site entrance is clearly sign posted and we were met by a friendly member of staff who showed us to our pitch marked by number with the edge corners marked on the grass. The pitch was of adequate size for a 4 berth caravan with awning plus room to park my vehicle in front of the awning or to the front of the caravan. Electric hook-up points were strategically placed on the pitching field within easy reach of most power cables. Not forgetting to mention the near bowling green like level of the pitch. The site quickly filled up during the afternoon but the the pitch spacing was still maintained allowing privacy between pitches.

The site facilities included toilets(2xMale+Urinals/2xFemale) and showers(4xIndividual Male/Female) which were located within a small building off the main Kelham Hall. We did experience some queuing at busy times but additional toilets(portaloos) were scattered around the site to alleviate any undue queuing due to high high numbers of people present. Water and an Elsan tap with chemical toilet disposal point are located near the main toilets. Kelham Hall was open 9am-6pm during the weekend providing refreshments and snacks from the cafe inside. A soft play area was also available for under 10's to play on when the rain begins to fall, although parental supervision is advised. Walks in the grounds along the River Trent can also be taken. A children's play park with swings, slides and a climbing frame are within sight of pitches towards the top of the field. Which our children enjoyed immensely

The closest town is Newark, a short drive down the road. We visited on a Sunday and easily found a car park opposite the castle with reasonable charges for 2-4 hrs(£2. 10). Newark castle is an interesting walk with free entry around the grounds. The town of Newark is a short walk across the main road with most popular shops open even on a Sunday.

Overall our first venture into the world of caravaning was very enjoyable and our next weekend is already planned.

Family of 2x Adults and 5 & 6 year olds and Alfie the cocker spaniel.
