Very disappointing.
The site looks quite reasonable when you arrive. It is not until you spend a little time on the site that you find there are many issues.
Electricity to the campsite was cut over thirty times. Especially at peak times when you are trying to relax in the caravan at night.
Many times there was no hot water in the showers. No toilet rolls for days. Many of the taps in the sinks do not work, No hot water to wash pots. Cobwebs hanging from the lights in the toilet block. Toilet bowls not cleaned for days. Bad lighting in the showers that were also very dirty.
Water stand either side of my pitch did not work. Horrible green standing water in one of them that kids and pets had access to.
The fishing was good but many of the pegs were unstable, water logged and likely to collapse if you use them.
There was never anyone in the site office. Not sure who you should complain to.
I am sure there were plus points but I could not get past dirty, cold water and dodgy electrics.
Such as shame because it could be a good site.

Have just spent the weekend at Crystal Lakes. Very nice site, well kept and tidy. Toilet/shower block was dated but clean enough. Plenty of hot water and never a queue.
The kids play barn was very good. Again, clean and well looked after.
A couple of negatives. The site is just off a road which seems to be used as a drag racing track and the road noise can be pretty loud at night.
It is also not a nice walk into Fenstanton when you are walking along a narrow pavement with cars going by at 80mph. The upside is you only need to be on the path for a couple of hundred yards before a footpath takes you through a field.
The second moan is the on site wifi. Don't bother with it, you won't stay connected and even if it does show a strong signal there is not even enough to stream music.

Have just spent 3 nights in a tent at this camp site and it is a really friendly, accommodating and enjoyable place to stay!
We found that we were welcomed as part of the community and everyone did everything that they could to ensure we had anything we needed.
The shop/cafe was a particularly nice touch. The food was amazing and was a great price. Brenda, the lady who ran the shop/cafe, was the highlight of our stay. She was extremely kind and friendly and did everything to cater to our needs that she could, including lending our very very burnt friend some of her own aftersun for a few days :)
She was also very easy to talk to and we all enjoyed a few conversations whilst having our breakfasts!
As fishing novices we had a few questions for the fishing bailiff and his wife who were more than happy to help us, giving us directions and spending a while advising us on how to set up our fishing rod!
The lakes were beautiful and St. Ives very nearby. Fenstanton Village was a 5 minute walk away so you are close by if you need to get or do anything you can't at the site. The river was also close by which was good as we had a dinghy and wanted to take it out. If you go down a little way there is a great tree that over hangs the river and is perfect for jumping in :)
The toilet blocks are clean and well kept, and there is a 'Play Barn', that has a large area for children to play in. This also includes an outside area with a couple of trampolines and another thing for kids to play on, which all was quite cool and made me wish I was 9 again. They also sell food here sometimes, but I recommend 'Brenda's'.
Overall the camp site was a brilliant relaxing stay and we will definitely go again.
--And in relation to other reviews here: I did not spot any shabby run down permanent caravans, they all seemed well kept and clean. The toilets were very clean and had recently been painted. And there are some very obvious bins.

The site entrance looked quite impressive. A long driveway with an area to the left set aside for prize fishing and car boot sales on Sunday mornings. However, the first impression of the caravan and camp site on the right hand side is that everything is very compact.
When allocated our area, I won’t call it a pitch as there are no marked out pitches – everyone just seems to be piled in where there is a gap. Electric hook up cables ran across most of the site which seems reasonably unsafe to me. On our 2nd day, two camper vans were parked to the rear and side of us – had we not had a motor mover on the van, I would imagine we would have been waiting for them to leave, so that we could make our exit.
I spent some time walking around the site with our dog, in the search of a bin. There is certainly no bin for dog mess and I eventually had to come to the conclusion that a skip, which was well hidden in the car boot sale car parking area, was for use of campers. There is a shop and cafe on site which I did not need the use of so cannot comment upon. There are also 2 fishing lakes exclusively for the use of guests, with an extra charge collected by a very helpful bailiff. I managed to catch a nice mirror carp of a few pounds in the morning, but unfortunately later in the day, a number of young boys started to fish making a lot of noise and running around, throwing stones etc (as unsupervised boys do), this put an end to catching any more fish. It has to be said that noise seems to be a problem on this site as everyone is so tightly packed in, even a quiet conversation can be heard close by.
On the plus side, there are many vans that are parked up for the whole season and while I was fishing I got chatting to a few of the regular guests on site. All are very friendly and seem to enjoy the facilities greatly (remember, these reviews are solely the opinion of the writer).
The shower and toilet block had cobwebs on the walls, a distinct lack of cleaning and the absence of toilet brushes in the cubicles (both Ladies and Gents). You can imagine what the toilets look like.
At a cost of £18 per night which includes electric hook up, awning and a dog (which was free), I do not class the site as particularly good value for the amount paid

Management response: Please note this site is under new management and has had extensive improvements on site, so some aspects of previous reviews might not reflect the current site |

What a little gem of a campsite, my husband and son are keen fishermen and they thought this site was great one lake you can pay £10 a day, which have tagged fish, anything up to £3,000 and another lake £4.50 per day both lakes they said were good although they never caught any tagged fish !
Toilets and showers block were clean and tidy with massive showers and drying area, which was brilliant. Small shop and cafe on site, if there was a sight downside, there seemed to be quite a few sited touring caravans used by people obviously working in the area and not always kept tidy which did detract from the holiday atmosphere slightly, but having said that it would not stop us visiting again.

Retruned today from Crystal lakes. Ok now for an honest review! To start with the people that ran the site were lovely and extremely helpful. The fishing lakes are amazing with one lake for 'tagged fishing'. The other very picturesque and very close for access from your tent/caravan.
We 'tented' and as we didn't need electrical hook up, found a pitch in a lovely spot. If you need hook ups the space is a bit limited and quite close to each other. Two or three smaller fields rather than one big one. Nice and clean toilets and huge showers, hot water ran out quickly though. Play barn looked brilliant but it is quite pricey and you must stay inside with your children so could have done with an outside swing or something (our daughter is 6 and got a touch bored as nothing else there).
Lovely walks down the river and to the marina, perfect for dogs. Close to St Ives which is beautiful.
I would go back again for a two/three day stay.
The only slight downside is that they do have lot of 'resident caravans', a couple of which are not very well presented which kind of took away the holiday vibe. The road is quite close too which can be a touch noisy at particular times.

Arrived at 7. 30 on a Friday night. There were no proper pitches for tents and we were told to put our tent up 'somewhere in the middle'.
There was no hot water for washing up during any of the time we spent there and no hot water in the ladies on Saturday / Sunday morning - I was told that this was to do with the large party of school girls rather than it being the norm. There was also no hot water in the men's on Sunday morning.
There is a small shop/cafe on site which sold basics.
There is a pub and chip shop in the village - we did not go to the pub so cannot comment - but the chip shop was ok.
We had no problems with noise at night. There is also a car boot sale on the Sunday morning however we did not experience any issues with this either and did not struggle to get out as mentioned in previous reviews.

My husband and I have just returned from a weekend at Crystal Lakes. It was a nice weekend, and we didn't want to travel far to get away. St Ives was just up the road where there was Budgens for those bit and bobs you may need, and it was a pretty place. The boatyard was just up Low road, which we enjoyed looking around and dreaming. Fenstanton was the other end of Low Road, where there were 2 or 3 local pubs if you wanted them and takeaways. The site did have a lot of long term campers, (one of which felt we all liked his taste of music and played it to the whole site which we felt was selfish and the site manager should have a word about) but nothing that spoilt our stay. If you are a fisherman this place is ideal, the lakes are amazing! I enjoyed walking our dog out and about the site, and on the Sunday there was a boot sale which was nice to walk over to and take a look. It did not interfere with us on the site. There is a barn which I could see invited children in to play at £4.50 a child. But ours were away so I didn't venture in there!
Somewhere nicely positioned and maintained. A site we would definitely go back to for a short break.

Not a very tent friendly site as we were the only one. Good location to go to St ives. Basic facilities nothing for kids to do other than for you to pay for the Play barn indoor play area.
It appeared that a lot of caravans stayed there all season. OK base, great if you like fishing.

Spent a week here really enjoyed the surroundings. Not a place for those who like site clubs, music etc. The site has none of these but my family and I enjoy peace and quiet. The fishing was great just over the way from the green. No lugging the kit too far here. Large car boot sale on Sunday got some good bargains. Just a couple of let downs. The toilet block although cleaned daily and water was hot do need a bit of TLC with hand dryers and a lick of paint. A bit of decent flooring and drain area in the showers. The site owner and managers were all extremely pleasant and we were made to feel most welcome. Kids catered for in the playbarn. All in all would visit again. Just hope our English weather improves.
