Although this campsite does not offer all facilities at this time of year it still surpasses all expectations for the price. The toilet block is superb with excellent showers, also hair washing & drying room, well presented laundry room & washing-up facilities. There is also a lovely play area for children. The pitches are level and the owners are very friendly & helpful. The location is perfect for all beaches from Mawgan Porth to Padstow. This is an extremely well run site we would recommend to anyone.

We loved this campsite. Slightly sloping pitches but not so much that it is a problem. Very clean toilet block. Only had to wait for a shower once and even then not long. Staff very friendly.
Well stocked shop and the children (8 & 12) loved popping in their for sweets and little toys priced at pocket money prices. Nice touch - hair drying room which is free.
Lovely play area and big field beyond for ball games. Pub at the end of the lane is deceptive - looks nothing, but the beer garden has wonderful views and the food was fine.
Also had a cream tea at the place at the end of the lane. Lovely beaches all round the area and the coastal path is stunning as well.
Very good value at £19 per night for a tent with 2 children. Summary - we would definitely go back without hesitation.

Chose this campsite based on the the good reviews that we read - and we were not disappointed. As others have said this is a well managed and friendly site - we managed to loose our pegs, they opened up their shop and sold us some!
We booked a pitch with EHU, thankfully these pitches are closer to the toilet block. If I am being forced to make a constructive criticism it would be that access to microwave would not go amiss and very handy for zapping my toddlers food.
The area is very nice and the locals friendly and helpful. Would recommend this site to anyone but would recommend a EHU pitch as these are flat and closer to the facilities.
Its a 8/10 site all day long.

After a second visit to Carnevas (in late August 2010) here are a few addenda to my previous review (see below).
The 'Jolly Roger' bar and restaurant on the site is open all evening in the high season (I'm not sure about off-season but you can phone the site and ask). The restaurant serves food from approx 6pm until 8.30pm (these were the times during August bank holiday week 2010). Meals can be ordered as take-aways so you can eat them in your tent or caravan.
The shop provides a good range of basics and it is open from 7.30am until noon, closed all afternoon, then open again from 5pm to 7pm (these were the times during August bank holiday week 2010).
The shop also offers a freezer-block replacement service for a charge of 20 pence; you take your thawed block in and they swap it for a frozen one. If you are not on an EHU pitch, you can also get your mobile phone charged (assuming you have brought your mains charger with you) and the cost for a full charge is £1.
There are two smallish fields near the shop / reception centre which cater for caravans (around the edges) and tents (in the centre) while a third field beyond the services block caters mainly for caravans and campervans. All these fields have EHU and are very close to showers and loos. However, it wasn't until my second visit that I found the two overspill fields beyond the main part of the site. These are both very large fields and each has a single tarmac roadway running its length. There are water standpipes at intervals along the edges but no EHU and the fields are fairly exposed to wind. It is a good walk (about 400 metres) from the far end of either field to the showers and loos. On the plus side, these fields are uncrowded and likely to be much quieter in the evening and night. If you are self-contained and prefer a bit of isolation, they are ideal.

We spent 6 rainy and windy nights here with a group of friends. The tents took a bit of a battering, but caravans and campers seemed fine. I think that the weather was pretty irregular for August! We were recieved a friendly welcome and shown immediately to our pitch. The staff were helpful but not intrusive in anyway. The facilities a good. The shop is small but well stocked for its size. The toilets were clean with free hot water. There is a launderette, pub that has entertainment and food, kids play area, chemical toilet and space to exercise the dog just off site. The site is immaculately maintained. The owner is constantly cutting grass.
We have stayed on this site about 10 years ago in a static caravan (they have a number of these for hire in a small secure little close).
This is a great family site, near to beaches and local towns such as padstow just a short drive away. Wonderful site, with friendly and helpful staff, we will return next year. I would recommend this site.

Just returned from a weeks stay at Carnevas and have to say this site ticks all the boxes for me ! Plenty of good clean toilets and showers, kids play area that shuts at around 9pm, games room for when its raining, small shop, friendly people, small pub on site, what more can I say. We were on pitch 15 and it was absolutely massive. Plenty of room for van, awning, car and other people even had 2 small tents on their pitches too ! The pitches we were on were separated by small fences which is good cos then you know exactly where your boundaries are. I think you pay so much for the pitch, awning and per person, but then its up to you what else you put on. The site was generally very quiet at night, and I have never been on a site where fellow campers are so friendly, nearly everyone spoke to us! One small complaint though - I cant believe the state of some of the 'seasonal' vans that are left on site and I am suprised that the site allows them to be left there in that state. The one next to my in laws was literally green mould all round the windows, and the tow ball on the front was so rusty it looked like it was about to drop off. There were several of these types dotted around and I have to say it does spoil the look of the site somewhat. And oh yes.One other thing.I have never experienced such tight roads to get to a site ! I was a nervous wreck all week dreading leaving, god knows what would happen if 2 caravans met up, we met a few other cars and it was tight enough! Didnt eat in the pub on site, but the food we saw looked good, and there was also entertainment a good few nights we were there. The site is very reasonable priced, and the kids in my party were 7, 8, 9, 13 and 17 and there was something to keep them all busy, we never saw them from tea time to bed time !
Treyarnon beach was my favourite, £3 to park all day, think the nearer beach was 4.80, you could walk to it but its along the very dangerous narrow roads with no footpath, and quite a hill back up.
All in all had an excellent week, and the only thing that's putting me off going back is the thought of them roads !

What can we say, other than we agree with all the positive reviews of this site (only negative was that we only stayed for 10 nights and wish we'd booked for more!).
The EHU pitch we had was a good size, flat and close to all the excellent facilities. They've got everything you could think of from the usual laundrette, to irons/ironing boards (free), hairdryers and even hair straighteners (again, both free!).
We ate at the on site pub 'The Jolly Roger' on a couple of occasions and the food was excellent and very good value. Probably the best food we've ever had at an on site facility
Loads of fantastic beaches all within less than 20 minutes drive. Our favourite was Treyarnon where the kids loved the rock pools, and when the tides out there's a great pool that they can all swim in safely.
We also liked to walk from the site to the coastal path (about 10 mins walk) where there are fantastic views of the Cornish coast line (and on the back you can pop into The Tredrea Inn which also has a great patio view of the sea).

Great family run campsite who only accept families and couples on site. We thought it was very good value for money, working out at £19.50 per night for our stay.
Owners were very visible during the day and the cleaning team worked hard keeping the toilets, showers and washing up rooms immaculate. There are two shower / toilet blocks and we never had to queue to use the facilities. Push button showers which lasted a reasonable length of time and had lots of hot water. There's also 2 family bathrooms with bath and shower - can't comment on these as we didn't use them but they did appear to be well used by other families.
It is a large campsite with 3 fields - we were pitched in the main field as we required EHU and we had a really good big flat pitch near the bottom of the main field. We were close to the playpark which had swings, a dinosaur chute and a zip slide - our 2 kids loved it.
The staff in reception were always helpful, there was also no rush to pay when we arrived, they were more concerned that we got our tent pitched and got settled before we worked out our bill which was really nice. There's a wee shop on site with the usual essentials which opened for a couple of hours in the morning and a couple of hours early evening - we found the prices to be very reasonable.
There's also a small pub on site which opened in the evenings only, serving pub grub - can't comment on the food as we didn't sample it but the bar was good for a pint on returning from the beach.
Portcothan Bay was about a 5 minute drive from the campsite, there's a car park just beside the beach (£4.80 for >4 hours parking) Great beach, very clean and had lifeguards from 10am to 6pm not to mention fantastic surf, kids loved the bodyboarding but the wetsuits were a must, the sea was freezing!
St Merryn is about a 10 minute drive from the site and had a Spar as well as a bakery and very good Chinese Takeway as well as another couple of beaches. Further on is Padstow (about 15 mins from Carnevas) - definitely worth visiting, lovely wee harbour with surf shops, ice cream shops, gift shops and of course, Rick Stein's empire of restaurants, deli, bakery and fish and chip shop. Sampled one of his fish suppers and it was fantastic - can highly recommend. There's also a Tesco in Padstow.
Most of the roads in the surrounding area are narrow single tracks with passing places so driving around does take a lot of care.
All in all, a very nice, well looked after campsite with good facilities and a good base to explore Cornwall from.

I readily admit I'm what you might call a 'fair weather car camper' - not for me, long treks into the wilderness with my tent on my back. That said, I've also camped a few times on isolated farmland with no facilities at all and on 'minimalist' camp sites (the sort where all that's provided is a water standpoint and a smelly portable loo).
But even by my pampered standards, a recent overnight stay at Carnevas Holiday Park proved luxurious. I'd read good reviews of the place and it certainly did not disappoint!
The site is is clearly signposted from the B3276 coast road. It is fifteen minutes' easy walk from Porthcothan (a bay with a good beach) and about ten minutes' walk from the South West Coast Path.
The lady in reception (who appeared to be the owner) gave me a very warm welcome when I turned up unannounced at 6pm on a June evening. To my relief, the site allows dogs.
It cost me £7.50 for one night to pitch my 2-man dome tent next to my car. I was told I could choose my own pitch as the site wasn't very busy.
The touring pitches are on level cropped grass served by gravelled roadways with caravan pitches round the edge and tent pitches in the centre (for caravans there looked to be plenty of electric hookups).
Overall, I found the pitching area very neat and tidy, spacious and uncrowded, and very quiet late at night.
The loo/shower block, washing-up room, laundromat and all other facilities seemed exceptionally clean and well-maintained. The site is surrounded and partially divided by hedges so despite being very near the coast there is plenty of protection from the wind.
There seemed to be plenty of provision for kids (including a swing park and play area): though that didn't interest me personally it emphasised the family-friendly feel.
Near the reception is a shop and a bar; I didn't use them but the shop seemed to be well-stocked. There is a big gas-bottle compound and I noticed it stocked all sizes (the brand sold is Calor).
For walkers, the easy access across farmland to the coast path is very handy. The lady at reception gave me directions so after pitching and making coffee, I walked my dog along the cliffs to Treyarnon beach then back to Porthcothan.
After my walk I went to bed early and was not disturbed by noise at all. In the morning I got up very early and had a shower. There was plenty of hot water although the shower cubicles are rather cramped. There are outside taps for filling water containers.
After another long coastal walk, I returned to Carnevas. Because the site wasn't very busy there was no pressure on me to leave so I struck camp late (about midday). The staff-members I met in the morning were helpful and polite.
In summary, I found Carnevas to be a very friendly campsite handily situated for the north Cornwall coast; the grounds were well-kept, the facilities were very good, and everything was immaculately clean.
The site seemed to attract family campers and caravanners (rather than youthful parties) so it was peaceful at night.
I strongly recommend Carnevas and I shall certainly visit it again.

What a fantastic site! This site has all the ingredients for a fab family holiday. Extremely well kept, very clean facilities and great for kids. We stayed for 9 nights with our large vermont L tent. Pitch was cosy but perfectly good and the area we were in near to the toilets was spacious and plenty of open space.
The facilities were kept very clean and the family bathroom was a godsend with our young daughter. Hair drying room was a lovely touch and very convenient. Never had to queue for hot showers and the site was very busy.
The shop was well stocked with all the essentials and Jolly Roger was good general pub fayre. Games room was small but the kids seemed to like it. The play park was brilliant for both my 10yr old son and 4yr old daughter, all the kids made friends and played happily together till 9pm most nights. After 10pm site was quiet and peaceful.
My parents came for a stay in one of the chalets on site, and were thrilled with the comfort and space they had. Everything was clean and well looked after. Every single member of staff from the owners to the shop and cleaning staff were extremely friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble.
Berryfields just before you get to the site was lovely for a quick game of pitch n putt and did a fabulous cream tea! We also got chatting to very friendly owner there and realised they do breakfasts, so stopped there before going home and enjoyed a very reasonable and tasty home cooked breakfast - Lovely!
I will definitely go back to Carnevas and this area of Cornwall it is truly stunning!
