We stayed here as a group of three families, on the lower field by the beautiful play area. The site itself is very sloped and the gravel paths slippy, but a lovely site with friendly helpful staff. As it was bank holiday weekend it was extremely busy and the toilet and shower areas could not cope. I understand they will be improving these over the winter ready for next year. The shower and toilet blocks were cleaned often, but the sheer volume of people trying to use 2 showers in each block caused problems. The kids enjoyed a walk through the woods next door, but we didn't venture to the local pubs ( apparently 5 mins away????) Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be much within walking distance. We would visit again, but not on a bank holiday.

I don't normally write negative reviews, but we've just come back from camping for four nights at this site and I feel I should write one this time. The toilet and shower block was not being kept clean or well maintained at all! When we got there, in the Ladies block, the shower plug and interior fitting (all gunged-up and hair-logged) was lying on the shower tray. I reported this, but it wasn't put right until the next day (note the shower charge is £1) The toilets were all badly stained and the floors had paper strewn about which pretty much stayed where it was nearly all weekend. There was a bucket and mop, but the water and the bucket were filthy so you got the shower tray more dirty if you tried using it. A bottle of cleaning fluid was left beside the bucket, which I'm sure was a hazard that should have been locked away. The cleaning log stated that the last time they were cleaned before our arrival was nine days earlier! There was a strong smell of drains/sewage near the dishwashing are behind the toilet block so I was glad we weren't pitched beside it.
The bins were not only overflowing, they were surrounded by rubbish and it was a health hazard. If I can, I will post a photo of them as they were a disgrace and totally unbelievable.
The camping pitches are, to understate, not level, and the entrance to the camping field was only grass and was not substantial enough to stand the weather. So it became waterlogged and very muddy. There was a gap between the hedgerows and some pitches which was being used as another road in, which I feel is dangerous and should be stopped.
I understand that we need to have lights to get around the site, but the ones on the camping field were on the actual electric hookups and shone brightly into the tents - it was like daylight!

This is the most disgusting site we have ever stopped in the UK and Europe.
The Rubbish bins were overflowing, seen rats. Smelt dreadful.
Toilets appalling, unable to use showers, only 2 and they were not working.
SHAME on AA ratings giving this a 4star rating.

First time on this site stayed for 3 nights were made very welcome wardens were very nice site was very clean and looked after as was the toilet block.
Just one small down side the gravel on the roadway especially on the slope with a heavy caravan it is hard to get traction but would rate the site 10 out of 10
Will come back again

We just got back from the camp site. We went Friday till sun. Thank you sue & Stewart you work so hard and very friendly. The site dose need more showers and washing up facilities and a bigger freezer. In the showers what is needed it a glass screen, not shower curtain and a fold up bench so you can put your clothes on and the coin machine next to each shower and a little shop that sells milk bread etc. , so if people run out they will know you got a shop on site. Really enjoyed our stay. Thank you rose & Keith and it was our first time camping :-) xx

Absolutely loved our stay.
Having initially made the error of booking Teversal campsite we arrived here at short notice and were welcomed whole heartedly.
This is a lovely site, in a quiet area near Alfreton, close to many major attraction and the Peak district.
The toilet block is fairly new, well equiped and maintained to a good standard. We saw the warden regularly cleaned the block throughout the day and was on hand to keep an eye on the smooth running of the site.
The free Wifi worked exceptionally well from our pitch and it was refreshing to not get charged extra for the service. Unfortunately thier generosity didn't extend to the showers.
We certainly plan to return to Riddings wood as it is a secure, well maintained campsite offering good value for money and potentially a great holiday.

On arrival we had to go and find the staff to book us in. After about 10 mins they appeared. I had booked 3 pitches but one pitch was no longer needed as he they had to cancel re work commitments, the lady in the office wouldn't refund any of the funds or let us have electric hook up instead. We asked to go down to the bottom of the field which is on a slope but ok at the bottom. Plenty of space no set pitch markings. We were told they had a quiet time of 11. 30 which is fine and I agree with. But they should have a quiet time in he morning too as parents were letting their children make so much noise at 6 30 am which was ridiculous. There is only one shower block and in the mens 2 showers at a cost of a pound for 10 mins. The showers weren't good at all going really hot and then freezing which isn't good especially having to pay for them. Wouldn't be ideal if you had to shower young children. Nothing to do around the site as we ended up driving to matlock and walk to the nearest pub in the village 1. 4 miles away. No food in red lion either so had to get a Chinese takeaway. Overall we had a good time but would only rate the site 6 out of 10 due to the facilities and surroundings.

Just got back from a weekend at Riddings wood, beautiful site with wonderful views and surrounding woodlands to walk the dogs.
The local village is only a 10 minute walk for all your groceries
The site has a new toilet and shower block which was clean and spacious, but has a few teething problems with loose taps but I'm sure they will sort this.
It is a dog friendly site but they like you to walk your dogs off site, and we were asked not to walk them on the bottom field which we thought odd but we did notice some people didn't clean up after their dogs which is what spoils it for all the rest.
The wardens on site are extremely pleasant and helpful.
As mentioned in other posts the bins do fill up quickly when the site is busy, Apart from that the site is well worth a visit for a relaxing few day in the Derbyshire country side.

I'm not normally one to complain but on this occasion I feel its well justified.
Came with sister and other half; them in a caravan us in a motorhome.
On arrival the site looked like a building site. I appreciate they are doing a lot of work on the site but in my opinion the site should not have been open. Apart from the muddy conditions which obviously was taken into your vehicle, we both had problems with the electric going off, the site was not well lit and there were holes that could be a potential hazard when walking in the dark. The facilities were not cleaned all weekend. The reception was not manned, and people were arriving and couldn't get on to the site because it is barrier operated, which makes the site safe and very secure but impossible to get in if you haven't got the barrier code.
Good points: Although the facilities were not cleaned they are of a high standard although not well thought out, 7 toilets to 2 showers in ladies. The showers are lovely and warm and the facilities block was lovely and warm too. There is an indoor pot washing area, freezer, washing machine. We walked around the local area and also walked through the woods.
All this said we may return in the future to see the site finished as it has the potential of being a very nice site, just a shame they opened it whilst in the middle of all this work. Other people we spoke to also thought the same.
