We were disappointed with our 5 night stay at Wild Rose Park, Ormside. I felt they were too overpriced considering where they are located – 5 miles to Appleby and 25 miles to Kendal. You need to drive to Kendal to get everything decent shopping wise.

We were charged £137. 50 for a five night touring pitch, awning, electric, two adults and one dog.

We specifically asked to be away from the children's play area and kids in general. We were given a pitch at Hazel Heights which is apparently a superior fully serviced pitch. When we tried to connect our digital TV to the TV aerial point on the pitch. Our TV came up 'No Signal' due to too poor a signal to get digital coverage. So luckily we had to revert to our own high gain aerial with no problem at all.

We had annoying kids on the pitch to the right of us and another family of kids screaming their heads off at varying times. To make matters worse, the caravan opposite left their dog in the caravan while they went to the pub. The result was, the dog was whining and barking until 1am.

In general there were too many children for our liking. It's a good site for families. However, if you're a couple with no kids like us, I would steer clear of Wild Rose Park.

Read the reviews but always want to see for myself. Here goes.

Wild Rose is a lovely park but not for us! We stayed in a Wigwam and was told we could get it from 2pm however when we arrived at 3. 30pm the wigwam wasn't ready, hadn't been cleaned! The site was very quiet (the English school holidays hadn't started) because of this the shop had limited opening hours, and the 'heated' outdoor pool wasn't open although this is stated on their website! The pool did open once the english school holidays started and it was freezing!

Reception - one girl was lovely and couldn't do enough the other couldn't care less!

The new bar - watch what you get charged coz it's certainly not what is on the drinks list on each table! They wanted to charge me £2. 40 for 2 half pints of blackcurrant cordial and water! The staff their had prices for those who stayed on the park and prices for everyone else.

The shop - well stocked and very reasonable and lovely staff.

Things to do - Tennis ( take your own rackets), pitch and putt (no holes for the golf balls), the adventure playpark has two pieces of equipment with thought, this space could be made much better for the older kids!

We visited Penrith, The Rutters Waterfall and Kendal whilst there, other than that we read!

The bakers in Appleby is fantastic, delicious ice cream too!

We spent most nights in our wigwam and the weather was fine whilst we were there so the kids made their own amusement.

The site filled up when the English school hols started and if you've got a large family tent this site is maybe not for you.

The kids enjoyed their time here but don't think we will be returning.

Good site this, large plots all with Ehu, clearly defined by marker post so no one will try and squeeze into a gap that's not there!

Swimming pool, on site shop, a bar serving food, a couple of play parks, laundrette, etc.

Stayed Wednesday to Saturday. Quiet on Wednesday and Thursday, got quite busy on Friday but was no way rowdy.

Toilet/ shower blocks clean, plenty of dish washing sinks. Would definitely go back.

Stayed here for Jubilee wk end with elderly parents and hubby. Several days before we arrived we were contacted with a special offer to stay for an extra night for £15 we took them up on this.

Great site very clean everything is recycled.

We had a superior plus pitch on Hazel heights with hard standing for caravan and awning and grass area for sitting out on. Pitch surrounded by hedging to give lots of privacy. Ample space for car and also spaces in car park at reception and late arrivals car park. Toilet shower block immaculate and included hair washing sink and proper baby bath, underfloor heating and piped music, showers were very hot and never queued once. Large indoor pot washing area with piping hot water. Very quiet although there was a lot of children on site.

Two pools on site and were used daily by children Pitch and putt also very popular

Very well stocked reasonably priced shop. Bar and restaurant tested out and highly recommend.

Live singer and entertainment over the jubilee wk end.

Visited The Rutter falls waterfall,

Penrith, Kendal, Windemere and Keswick no problems with traffic or navigation to any of these.

Staff very helpful and pleasant

Would definitely return

Don't let previous reviews put you off as it nearly did us. So here goes:-

Park itself is set in a beautiful location, and its appearance is clean, tidy and well maintained.

Toilets:- Clean, tidy, not the best in the world but hey you're camping. If you want a proper shower get a caravan!

Shop:- Well stocked, and staff very friendly and helpful.

Bar:- Sells beer, what more do you want? Staff really friendly, and the bar is modern looking (for a camp site).

Play areas for children:- Has an adventure playground which pleased our 5 year old, and seemed to attract many other children of all ages. Has a park with slides, swings etc which needs updating but otherwise is ok.

Dogs:- God forbid should your dog get off the lead. This is a dig at other guests not really the park. Lovely walks in the area and they even supply poop bags for you, so no excuses, although did see that some people let their dog poop everywhere and not clean it up. Even next to children's play area!

Other facilities:- Playroom for babies, got toys in it do 6 months old know otherwise. Arcade, cheap and value for money.

Outdoor pool - Can't comment because it was only 90 degrees when we went and my son won't swim outside unless he is in the carribean!

Overall - Will definitely be going there again, we had a lovely time and all of the staff were extremely helpful.

Lovely site, good spacious pitches, had fully serviced pitch which was excellent. Bar was being refurbished however we understand it has to be done sometime and the Manager even gave us a free drink which was really nice. There is a well stocked shop. Not a lot within walking distance of site so pack plenty of food and drink or make use of the excellent shop. Toilets and showers okay. Would revisit

Appleby worth a visit although it's fairly small. Staff friendly and site well maintained. Didn't use the restaurant however it looked busy and had a good menu choice.

Just spent 4 nights over the Easter and although we had a lovely break just my husband and I we have stayed a far better places. The park was quite nice. The on site shop was very good.

Staff were friendly enough but have yet to see the park wardens.

Poorly signed for chemical toilets, the one I did find was blocked.

Bar is really poor. Very little choice. The bar seemed to be an after thought. I cannot see where the 5 star rating has come from. There was on-going building work taking place in the bar/restaurant so with any luck it will be better in the future.

Toilet block out of date but ok.

The park did appear to cater well for children which was lovely to see and I will be taking my step-children of 8 and 10 there in the future.

We went into Appleby a few times and that was lovely and well worth a visit.

Just returned from Easter Weekend visit to this site and whilst I can appreciate the positive comments of some of the other reviewers, this wasn't a site for us.

The site had lots of facilities and was set in a beautiful location not too far from Appleby which had enough to cover your basic needs. However, we found the site to be simply too large and too cramped. We were in a six man family tent camping in the Donkeys Nest area. We had to pitch our tent side on because to do it the other way would have meant sleeping on a slope and by putting it side on, there wasn't enough room for our awning. As it was, we were virtually looking into our neighbours tent! The cars had to be parked half on half off the grass and gravel road leaving very little room for children to play with a certain amount of freedom. We were lucky as we were surrounded by 5 or 6 lovely families who were all extremely respectful and tolerant of their neighbours.

Onto the facilities - we didn't use the restaurant or games room so can't comment. The shop was very well supplied and reasonably priced and my kids loved the play area. The toilets started off clean (if a bit dated) but the state of the ladies toilets by the end of the visit left a lot to be desired and I would have liked to have seen cleaners present with a lot more frequency. There were only two showers in use which did result in queues if you arrived after half eight in the morning.

I also thought it would have made sense for the people who run the site to have set up a more frequent bin collection as the bins were considerably overflowing by the time we left.

Dish washing facilities were good.

In short, it just wasn't for us. I appreciate it was Easter weekend and one of the busiest times of the year but the cramped conditions and lack of space for the children would deter me from going back again.

Mixed feelings over this site :-

The place itself is not ideally located to do much without driving for a long time (30min+), but the park has everything most families will want within it.

The toilets and showers were brilliant better than any other site we've used however some children had been allowed to take all loo roll and scatter it round the park which spoilt a lot of our stay and they weren't made to clean up after there dog. But to balance this you can get bad families where you go.

If you want an open field and room for kids to run - this is not the place, the pitches are tight together and gravel paths in between, if you want to just stay put while the kids swim and climb this is great. The park, pool, shop were all very good.

On arriving at Wild Rose the girl on reception was very friendly and helpful and provided us with information on things to do in the surrounding area and a map of the site. We were told to pitch wherever we wanted as all pitches were EHU.

On arriving at Donkeys Nest, we drove around and selected pitch. Donkeys nest is on a slope, but it didn't seem too bad once the tent was set up.

The pitches did feel very cramped, it was height of the season though, but we did feel that the whole site felt cramped.

The toilets were clean and functional, and the showers were nice and warm.

The sink area had quite a few sinks and again were quite clean.

The outdoor pool was quite cool and our little ones didn't last too long in there, but a bonus was there were hot showers right next to the pool, so we were able to warm them up quite quickly.

2 playground areas were brilliant and again the kids loved them.

There is a river a close walk away and kids were able to paddle and take fishing nets down.

Appleby is about a 5 minute drive away and was fantastic. Nice bakers, brilliant butchers (the older shop) which sold the best bacon. A fab fish and chip shop.

Our daughter went pony trekking whilst there which was a 30 minute drive from Wild Rose.

All in all a good site but a little too cramped in the height of season.
