This is a lovely site in a good location. But I am afraid the facilities let it down. We stayed for 3 nights, the pitch we stayed in was ok but had big puddles of water which only the ducks loved, was hard trying to keep a 2 yr old away from them! Showers and toilets are in need for updating, they were run down and showers were cold. They seem to be ploughing the money into the static caravan side of the site, which seems to be way they want to go. We only used the bar once, which was enough, never drank a drink so quick to get out. It was full of loud people and full of kids. Would only visit this site again if they rectified these problems, which is a shame as its is close to us and is a very picturesque site.

We visited with some trepidation having read some of the reviews but we were pleasantly surprised. The pitches at the top of the field are level and well drained, there is a small shop a bar and takeaway on site, a children's playground and 24 hour security. The toilets were clean as were the showers. Granted the showers could do with some TLC and upgrading and a curtain or divider of some description would be good to protect your clothes from the spray.
The people running the site have apparently not long taken over and are obviously keen to improve. They are planning regular events in the adjacent field and over the 6 days we were there we saw the Virgin Hot Air Balloon take off, a flock of pigeons being released and a boot sale. We missed the Castle Fete and open day by 2 days.
I have never camped in the grounds of a castle before and, as long as you can ignore the sound of peacocks at 3.00 am, the peace and quiet have to be experienced.

I've been to Witton Castle a number of times over the past few years and was pleasantly surprised when I visited at the end of October. Was advised by the lady in the office that the park is under new ownership and they no longer accepts stag, hen or groups of under 25s which was one of the noisy problems I had encountered in the past.
There appears to be a major redevelopment underway on the right as you pass the security gate, but think this is only for static caravans.
The touring site was in remarkably good nick for the time of year and the amount of rain we've seen! The showers and toilets were clean and the water was hot! Grocery shop was well stocked with the essentials and at reasonable prices. Never tried the bar in the castle.
Was charged £18 a night for our tourer which is ok. Will revisit this site as the scenery around is beautiful and they appear to be trying to get rid of the 'rent a yob' problems they've had it the past.

When we arrived we were greeted by a nice lady in the reception. As we were one of only two guests that weekend on the touring field, we got to cherry pick our pitch we chose number 2 at the very top of the field, next to the wall, by the trees and most importantly dry! Facilities were fine, lot of development going on for statics. Good play area for the kids and open space for ball games. Setting is stunning and my camera took a hammering around the castle itself, cold crisp blue skies made a perfect backdrop. Like the site because it was nice an quiet (even though it was the October half term), have read the previous reviews and can relate to what they have said. We would return again and use the touring field, out of season, but would probably not use the bar, clientèle a little rough around the edges you might say.

This was our third visit to this site and it is improving, although I can imagine it will be an all static site in a couple of years.
The site was cheap at £16 per night. The touring field was still quite muddy although we hadn`t had much rain for a good spell before visiting the site.
Friendly staff and a nice bar with entertainment at the weekend. There seemed to be a couple of security staff around at all times keeping an eye on things. Don`t expect to get much sleep as the site is very noisy at night and no some people seem not too respect other people actually wanting to sleep at night.
This site is in lovely surroundings and if the problem with noise at night could be sorted would probably be a very popular site.

Visited this site before and was a little worried about visiting again but thought we would give it ago with it being taken over and under new management.
The little shop and bar in the castle were the same but this time we did not need to pay to get in this time what was better to my pocket.
The price was very cheap at only £13.50 a night for 2 adults and 1 child with a large tent the staff were friendly and could not be faulted at all.
The shop sold most things you would need if you forgot to pack anything and again the staff in there were friendly.
The toilet blocks and showers were clean and tidy a lot better than our last visit.
The play park was great for the kids.
We were aloud to have a BBQ and a small open fire as long as it was raised from the ground with the bricks provided wich added to experience of the camping trip for our young lad.
The site was patrolled with security constantly and there did not seem to be any groups of idiots swearing. The only problem we had was there was one group that played a guitar and sang through the night keeping us up.
The fish and chip shop was not the best and the food was a little poor but that might have been because it had just opened after being closed through the week.
Apart from that I would recommend this site even if you have had a bad time there before.

After visiting this site previously, I was very pleasantly surprised at the changes that are taking place. For example, the site is very clean and there seems to be a constant team picking up litter and emptying the ample bins – my only criticism would be that the bins on the top field are right in the middle and are not a very pretty site whilst having your bbq! Perhaps these could have an enclosure round them?
However, everything else is spot on – the showers are clean and the water hot, the shop is reasonable and has a good basic stock and the playing park is ideal. The staff (especially the lovely lady in the shop and the lady in reception/booking) are all very helpful and pleasant.
If I would have one recommendation it would be that unless you need electricity, then go on the top field where it is much quieter – apparently the field with electricity gets a bit rowdy but we were blissfully unaware of this on the top field. We will definitely be going back and are already booking up for next weekend!

Campsite is lovely! Beautiful scenery!
We were charged a very reasonable £13.50 for 4 adults, 3 children, 2 cars and 1 huge tent.
Can have your own BBQ providing you protect the grass, which (apart from a couple of cigarette butts) was well kept.
The kiddies play area is very nice - separated into 2 areas (babies / toddlers & young children).
The ladies toilets and showers were immaculate however I was informed the mens were a bit yacky with puddles on the floor so men you may need to hike up your trouser legs.
There is a pub which is very nice and clean, kids allowed, and a pool table.
There is a small shop, selling allsorts so try there first if you've forgotten something. They do a nice cuppa tea there too and the staff are so nice!
There is also a fish and chip shop which is very tasty.
There were lots of bins and the place was kept clean.
We were well impressed. Until nightfall that is. Seems once closing time at the pub occurred the chavas of the North East united in a bid to stop every non-chava from getting any sleep.
However, the campsite cannot be blamed for this as the security was amazing! I counted 6 groups he kicked off the site. (I'm still wondering why the Police weren't there, at the site exit, to pull over the drunken yobs?!). The security guard was very fair, quick to act - quite remarkable actually.
However it's a shame, especially due to the scenery and the fact that the kids loved it as much as we did, but due to the chavas I don't think we'll be staying there again.

Loads of space. Nice surroundings. This is a lively site but not rowdy that we seen. Nice pint in bar. Kids allowed to play pool. Chip shop is handy and reasonably priced. We were in a group of ten tents. Very cheap rates compared to some other sites.

Spent most weekends here. What a great site, even there for the last weekend sad though that no visits in 2009 as no longer takes tents what a shame. Showers not great but good on site shop and very friendly staff and the kids loved the park. On site pub great for day or night entertainment.
