We stayed here from fri 27th - sun 29th june, and would not go back again, due to the high levels of noise. This was our 2nd time here, as we 1st stayed for a weekend last year.
We stayed with friends who also had been before. There seemed to be large groups of family tents with adults and kids in the groups, and all seemed to have little respect for other campers after midnight, as loud music was was constantly played, drunken shouting and harsh language till 5 in the morn.
There seemed to be alot of locals who use this site, as we noticed alot of young lads around the place.
The site itself, is lovely, as the new owners are making improvments, ie cleaning the local river and creating new hard stands for more caravans. The site was clean with plenty of bins around, plenty of electric hook ups and 2 sets of ladies toilets with 1 set of gents toilets.
The shop is well stocked and reasonable prices, the chippy is open till 11.30. We did not go into the club house so no comment there.
The cost of £13.50 p/n was reasonable but not at the expense of not getting much sleep.
Witton le wear village is a 30mins stroll away, the 2 pubs are really nice, and food at the victoria is well worth the walk,as the home made chips are fab.
The victoria also welcomes well behaved dogs inside, so that was a bonus to us.

Campsite is a nice size, and the toilets and showers are nearby.
The play park is good for children although on the downside, it was over run with unsupervised children from 4 years upwards!
The shop is small but sells most things you'd need if you've forgotten anything and quite reasonably priced, and the lady there is nice too! 50p to charge your phone there.
The pub is priced ok but doesn't serve food and the chippy is closed waiting for Tender so there's no hot food on the site.
The grass is fairly level for tents and they keep the grass cut ok.
The site was clean with lots of bins around.
If I could give any advice to the new owners it would be to reinforce the fact that people need their sleep, especially those with children and the kids themselves.
The reason I'm saying this is because the one night we were there we managed to clock about 2 to 3 hours sleep due to a bunch of unruley, rude, fowl mouthed, loud, obnoxious campers who bellowed, laughed and swore their way through most of the night, ignoring plees from annoyed and fed up visitors to quieten down. This went on till 4 in the morning. It was absolutely horrible.
The site should have a security patrol to throw off people like that there and then.

Read a few reviews elsewhere about how the place used to be before being taken over and tbh we were a bit apprehensive but as it wasn't too far to travel to and quite cheap (£13.50 p/n + £5 EHO for a car + 4 people) we decided to risk it. It was nowhere near as bad as we thought it was going to be. We've never stayed at a site this big before so seeing so many people all camping in one place was a bit of a culture shock! Obviously the Bank Holiday had something to do with the numbers. Anyway.Shower facilities were clean but too few for a site that had somewhere near 200 units on it (4 male/5 or 6 female). Shop was ok and prices were very reasonable. Security on site but they only seemed interested in checking to see if you've paid or not. Lots and lots of kids, many running around unchecked. Not really a problem, just unsettling to those of us who'd only been on smaller sites. Pitches were level and dry.
Some loud music, not a lot, and the site does quieten down after midnight (except for the resident Peacocks which call constantly). Didn't visit the clubhouse so can't comment on what it was like but it does do live acts.
We'd go back, but we still prefer the smaller, quiter sites. All in all, no reason to give a bad review and from what we'd read previously, it does seem as if the new management are trying to improve the place. The staff were friendly and helpful too.
If you're looking for a quiet place to stay, this site isn't for you. If you're looking to for somewhere to go with a group of friends and have a more 'lively' time then it's worth considering.

This site has been taken over by Shorewood Leisure Group and the park is currently undergoing a multi million pound upgrade. Therefore the owners have requested reviews from years prior to 2008 are removed, as they no longer reflect the park in it's new format.

We used this site when visiting the annual Stormin' the Castle festival. The site was rammed and the facilities seemed to hold out well, despite their being a couple of thousand people camping in the festival. The site gets a lot of bad press, but we thought their management of the place was good. The site gets a very mixed crowd and is quite lively, and offers several amenities such as bars, shop and fish and chips. Nearby towns of Crook and Bishop Aukland are useful for shops and pubs, and a little further afield is Durham City. Will certainly return to this site for next year's festival.
