 Just got home from a fantastic week here weather was great. The campsite is good we had pitch 14 we were near what they called the top toilets that was a god send with kids in the middle of the night. The showers and main toilets were over the railway line into the next field. Those of you that have kids know it's an adventure to go for a shower in the morning passed the railway line and river we were lucky to meet the train most mornings. The ladies shower were better than the mens due to modern shower's not the push type and my husband said the flies are bad as they are near the trees. The pub on site is great they welcome kids and dogs and has a kids park on site. The food was great and loads of it beer was great as it's brewed on site bar staff are friendly and the waiters and waitresses are lovely very helpful. The only thing that would improve this campsite is more entertainment at night for the campers all in all a great week and only £22 per night so for a family of 4 its great value for money and if you have 2 son's like us the james and henry train that pass each day it's a must

On the whole, this site was definitely a winner. My family and I camped for five nights in the last week of July, and by the end of that time my love for the beautiful Welsh mountains had been well and truly refreshed. This site's best asset is its lovely mountain views, and good proximity to all sorts of other things to do, both inland and at the seaside.
That said, there are certainly some points that I would advise any visitors to be aware of. The campsite space is great, although the ground itself is rocky (or at least is was where we were, which was in the field closest to the road). Some pitches had a sort of shale surface to them which fellow campers said was tricky to work with. My advice would be to ask for a plot that is fully grassed. Next, you are out in the country, and with that, naturally, you get the lovely sounds of the country. However, there are a lively bunch of roosters living right next to the site and they really were quite loud. It was as if they were all trying to out-do each other. Waking us around 4ish in the morning. Barking dogs join into the symphony also. We were worried about this after our first night, but to be very fair, you are in the country and we did notice this noise less as our time there went by. Just take some ear-plugs.
The pub is spot on. The ale was really excellent. The food not so good, but I did get the impression that they were having a slight wobble one night due to short staff, so feels unfair to tar my whole judgement on what appeared to be an 'off' night. Expect no frills decent pub grub and you won't be disappointed. The staff are great and didn't intrude at all. Trusting and respectful of their guests = perfect.
I would describe the facilities as adequate. The showers in the ladies were pretty good (but the pressure reduces lots if two showers are on at the same time). The guys said that their showers weren't great, but did the job. Again, no frills, but alright. There is an indoor space to wash up, and a freezer that guests are welcome to use. I think the tariff is expensive given the quality of the campsite grounds and facilities, but as I said at the start, you are in a cracking spot; this place is all about the location. There are mountain views, a gently flowing river and what's more, the steam train comes right to the site, bonus! So one last tip to finish with, and it's the most important one I think - take LOTS of insect repellent, you will need it. Hope you find this review helpful.

Unfortunately we didn't like this site very much at all. For what it is, we thought it was over priced to start with at £25 per night. We'd just paid slightly less at two other sites that were much, much better.
As others have mentioned, if you're in the top field, you need to cross the narrow gauge railway line to reach the shower and laundry/dish washing area. Once there, we found that the showers weren't very clean, covered in a lot of dead flies, rusting metalwork and really not what we expect for the money charged.
The toilets in the upper field are basic at best but are more like that of a basic public toilet than a campsite.
We too were woken very early by the cockerels and dogs from over the fence but being in the countryside, I wouldn't have minded that so much if it hadn't been for the other things mentioned.
It's all relative to what you pay in our opinion but in this case, sorry, but all in all, just not worth the money paid.
Our advice, if you must stay here, is to ask to pitch in the bottom field which is where the stream is. You'll get a better view of the mountains and be further away from the neighbouring animals. If you need to use the laundry, make sure you get some tokens from the pub when it's open. If you leave it until morning, you'll be stuck. And, if going in the summer, take some insect repellent.

If you love mountains, fresh air, steam trains country and hill walks (and midges ;-)) you will love this site.
I am slightly biased as I was born only 3 miles away and lived in Waunfawr for 10 years.
The Welsh Highland Railway goes right past your door. We had pitch No. 8 right in the corner by the level crossing and could wave at the driver from the caravan window 12 yards away!. :-) Don't worry they start about 10 in the morning and only run until about 5 p. M. (£24 ish for 2 adults and a dog to Caernarfon and back)
The site facilities. Hmmm. Basic is the best description. You need to cross the level crossing or the foot bridge to get to the main block. Washing machine and dryer are available (didn't use them so not sure how you pay), pot washing and a large freezer.
The showers were OK plenty of hot water, coat hooks, a stool and a shower curtain to keep stuff dry. Open 24/7 (you get a key code if its locked. Although the door didn't seem to lock properly on the gents and was always open). Clean ish. If I owned the site I would insist on them being cleaned at least twice a day (not just once in the morning)
Note to owner, (if you read this). It does need it.
Soap and toilet paper provided (the liquid soap dispensers looked smart and I suspect quite a few might have 'walked'!)
There are 2 unisex loos in the top field but these are very basic (maybe to discourage train users from using them).
Chip shop in waunfawr ('siop sglodion') is only open from about 5:30 to 8:30 3 days a week so don't bank on it being there when you want.
Be warned NO phone signal or very poor if on Orange, Vodafone seems ok. Which is great if you want to totally get away from the 'office'. But also NO TV reception (on our equipment anyway)
Caernarfon has everything else. A normal sized Tesco (on Pwllheli / Bontnewydd road) and a big ish Morrisons on the Bangor road. Loads of pubs, cafes the Castle etc.
The field over the railway line is next to the river Gwyrfai and you can 'wild swim' in it! it was great. A bit difficult to get in and out of (high bank and a few big rocks) but there is a deep pool 6 feet+ (cold initially but lovely once in. Local kids use it as well. The weather was brilliant sunny and 24+. ) Not suitable unless you are fit and wearing footwear.
I don't think for a minute you are officially allowed to swim in it (as we all know 'elf n safety', insurance etc. ) but if you want to take the risk it was lovely. So clean and full of brown trout! (it is a game river so you do need a fishing licence. A few typical inner city kids were there, with parents, who just assumed they could fish as per a coarse river! where are the wardens when you need them?) They were a bit noisy til late 4 a. M. Burning rubbish in their barbie a la gypsies! But hey what can you do?
The pub as previously mentioned in other reviews was lovely. Food - big portions nicely cooked(take away to eat in the van if you want) and the beer is excellent! Dogs are allowed in to the main bar area but not the lounge. There is a pool table and family room.
If you ask (when the master brewer is in) they might show you the brewing side
The MAIN criticism is PRICE. £25 PER NIGHT (2 adults, 1 dog, caravan, awning and EHU) is expensive for the level of facilities. You can get better for less. But probably not with this view.
We have a german shepherd and 'walking' her morning and evening was a bit of conundrum as there isn't really a suitable field (there is one next to the lower field (gate by the shower block) but its quite boggy). However go out of the site main gate turn left down the main road and 100yards on the right at a bend in the road is a small but steep (steps and wooden walkways) nature reserve/walk. Local council maintain the paths etc and no people whatsoever!
Hee hee. First night on site, all set up beautiful mountain views, no traffic noise only the sounds of the country. Just wonderful. Then wallop! 20+ touring cars from a Dutch 'Cannonball Run' club complete with 'dixie' motor horns, loud exhausts et al turn up 50+ people great!.
Actually it wasn't too bad they were mostly middle aged men and women and apart from the occasional 10 minute blast of the car stereo and loud talking till 1 a. M. They had gone the next day. Phew. The owner (Very nice lady!) and her manager visited all of the other tenants and apologised, saying they (the tour) were only staying 1 night and please don't go!
All in all a beautiful place just its a bit pricey.

What a lovely site. Close enough (4 miles) to Caernarfon for supermarkets etc. But equally in the middle of nowhere for great views of the mountains. We stayed in the top field with the steam railway the other side of the fence. Lovely field, spaced well apart with ehu's for most pitches.
The facilities are fine, 2 unisex toilets in our field and a further 2 and 3showers for each single sex in the other field which is a 2 min walk over the railway footbridge. Brewpub was great and surprisingly busy; a real local feel to it which was nice. There is a main bar, restaurant bar for food and a further family room where children and dogs are allowed. A real bonus when the evenings get a bit chilly. The beer is also pretty amazing and reasonable at £2. 80 a pint!
The staff were really helpful and cheerful and we didn't see any staff around the campsite all week which was good- close enough if we needed them but they didn't intrude with numerous rules etc. I would seriously recommend this site to anyone.
A number of people have mentioned the cockerels next door. They do make a noise from around 4 am but to be honest, after the first night we didn't notice them- must be the beer!
After all if you want to be in the country you have to accept that animals make noise.
In terms of trips, the railway to Porthmadog is very nice however there isn't much to do there for 3 hours whilst you wait for the 2 nd return. I'd be tempted to get there and then get straight back on the return train myself.
The Snowdonia train is great for the views, expensive at £90 for a family of 4, but you need to book as there are limited seats.
Harlech is nice and has a wide beach that dogs are allowed on half of it.
Betws y coed is lovely for the river and falls. The drive from the site through beddgellert there is breathtaking. On the way back split off and come past the snowdonia railway on the Llanberis pass- fab.
All in all a great site, great pub- definitely one to return to.

Seriously ? A campsite with a brewery on site ? What more does a person want!
Well as some have said, this site is noisy - during our stay that noise came at all hours from dogs, kids and very early cockerels. The site is not very well looked after - rubbish and general upkeep, the facilities were shabby.
If you are in a tent and don't need hook up then ask to go in the field across the railway line as that is quieter. Lots of people (4 families) I spoke to were leaving after one night even though they paid for 2 or 3 in advance. £22 for us was not good value.
Pub serves good beers and ok food but my hopes were not met overall.

Midges. Lots of them.
On the face of it this could be the best campsite in the world: beautiful scenery, steam railway on the doorstep and brewpub across the carpark. Unfortunately the campsite bit isn't so great.
We paid £25 per night for campervan, awning and hookup. I think this is a bit steep considering the facilities are pretty basic and a bit unloved. Stupid stuff like the loo roll being impossible to reach and the light timer being very short give the impression that the owner doesn't really care much about the campsite. Facilities could also do with more regular cleaning of cobwebs etc.
Pub next door (same owner) was really good - lovely beer and generous meals. Welsh Highland Railway excellent. Just across the road is an interesting little nature reserve around an old quarry - nice little walk to be had there. There is also a bus stop just outside the campsite although buses are not very frequent.
There is no shop in the nearby village - make sure you take all the supplies you need.
Did I mention the midges? My wife got absolutely covered in bites. We managed to keep the worst away on subsequent nights with citronella candles.

We have just arrived back from a short New Years break, we travelled as a family 2 adults and 2 kids. Site is quite small and was very quiet, but there is a very noisy cockerel in the neighbourhood, so if you're a late riser, take ear plugs. Toilets and shower blocks are clean with one block in each field. Didn't use the laundry as only there for a few days. The pub is very welcoming, with food and a family room. The meals are excellent value and generous portions. Numerous real ales which my husband took full advantage off. Carmen, the owner of the site and pub, was so welcoming to all of us, she went out of her way to make sure we were happy and involved in what was happening in the pub. We entered as customers and left as friends. Overall a brilliant short break and we will definitely be returning to the site.

We have just purchased our first motorhome and wanted to try it out at a site that had social amenities such as a pub and bar food, the pressure of all the things to remember we didn't want think about cooking etc. This site has a number of hard standings about 10 about then there is a large grassed area for camping and caravans, I suggest that motorhome visitors ask for grassed sites they are far more attractive than the shale used as hardcore. The hook up is 10amp which was okay, but make sure your hose for fresh water is at least 10m long, we had to borrow one, there is a short walk to empty you toilet waste.
The pub is really friendly and is very much a locals pub, but they were really friendly the village of Waunfawr is about a 10 minute walk but no pub! Which I assume this is why it is the village local. The food is of a good standard and the portions are massive, it's not particularly cheap though, but hey ho.
Right next to the site is the North Wales narrow gauge railway that takes you west to Caernarfan and east to Snowdon, the cost to the summit is £25 return (pricey) or £10. 50 & £2. 50 for the yorkie, we elected to do this it took about 50 minutes, coming back the train was two hours late so we politely asked for a refund and caught the bus, getting back it too ten minutes and cost £4. 20 for both of us incl dog.

Just returned from a fab week, the day we got there it it threw it down and I thought we would never get the tent up, but we did and then sun came out,
if you stay in top field near the road there are 2 toilets and cold water, for the showers washing up area and laundry room there is a short walk over the railway bridge to the bottom field, for laundry we had to get tokens from pub 4 tokens = £4 for a wash and dry.
There is loads to do not far away and if you don't want use the car you can take the Welsh Highland Railway from the station on site.
A must take midge repellent.
