Stayed at this site over Easter. Site surrounded by fantastic scenery - snow covered mountains in bright sunshine. Agree with earlier review that lady behind the bar is not very welcoming when you book in.

Pitch was hardstanding with electric in the top field (£25 per night). Not very impressed with the toilet block in this field - 2 stainless steel toilets with screwed down wooden seats.

Toilet block in other field over the railway line is better. Clean, but too small for the number of pitches. 3 showers, nice and hot - could each do with a plastic stool to perch on when trying to get socks back on! Need a shelf or hooks for towels by the sinks as well. Need to change timer on PIR sensor at night - not enough time allowed before lights out (about 2 mins) and then its pitch black.

Pub food very good with good beer. Best thing about the site are the steam trains - the kids loved watching them fill up with water at the station every morning. All in all, site in nice area but wouldn't go back - too expensive for level of facilities. Actually, might go back just to shoot the cockerel in the small holding next to the hardstanding. 5.30am roll call!

The site owners have advised that as from the 2010 season, the showers blocks have been refurbished so they are very nice now. Please also note the site does not accept large parties or stag groups!

Well just have to say the scenery is wonderful so the camp site will come second best;however I had to do this review. The pub on arrival was slightly different from the picture on the web site as was the camping field.

The staff were friendly enough but the place had no atmosphere after I had ordered my meal things were better the food was good and reasonable prices as well. I was told to go to pitch 24 which took me 14 minutes to find as the number was missing and was unsuitable as being covered in twigs and gravel prevented a tent peg going in so I was allocated no 11. This pitch was sloping and small and boggy so much so my table sunk at one end!

The showers across the track were ok as were the two toilets near the car park but the whole ground needs a total dig up and flattened it is not good I am afraid for tents!

The owners later on at night began to warm to me and I liked the food and the beer on offer which was of a good price so no complaints.
The near by railway was too expensive £25 for 19 miles.
With a lot of money spent this would be a great site but as it is after heavy rain I would not stop for long.

Having said this I will be back because the location is just lovely!

This was my first experience of camping for many years and I was pleased to say that after this experience I’ll definitely be doing it again and would consider using the same site again.

The sites facilities were adequate for our needs. I went with my partner and our three person tent and had a small pitch. The pitch sizes vary depending on how large a tent you have which was fine for our needs and was the right size. Though I would suggest that if you get the chance to specify where you can be located try to be located in the lower field since it is closer to the toilet and shower blocks and is further away from the road (which isn’t busy so isn’t an issue)

The site also offered electricity hook up if required and provided a launderette area neither of which we used but is a fantastic facility to have available.

The pub on site was perhaps a little expensive for the meals but provides nice food if you don’t want to cook or fancy a change and being located where the site is it is a great location for nearby towns where Tesco and Morrision are not far away and about 6 miles away is Snowdonia railway and the pathways to two of the summit routes.

Ideas for improvements

Some sort of shelf area in the showers to allow items to be placed in easy reach when using the shower and for plugs to be provided in the sinks.

Plus Points

Well priced

Good location

Nice sized pitches

Not to big a site

Shop & pub nearby

Negatives

Noise from birds from next door farm (though not really an issue)

Shower cubical very small (But still plenty of hot water)

Overall

I would consider going back to the site again and would recommend it to family and friends if they were looking for a well priced location which isn’t too busy but provides reasonable facilities.

I booked this site 3 days before leaving home. Not very friendly when booking by phone! Arrived Tuesday morning during a very wet 24 hours in North Wales.

Booked in at Pub (on site)lady at bar (same who took booking by phone) not friendly. Not shown to pitch, told we were on overflow field across small railway line! Avoid overflow, very very wet with tall grass and facilities dirty, no soap in toilets (until our last day).

Pub good & views great

We stayed here for about 8 nights in July 2009 and had a thoroughly enjoyable time.

The location is absolutely stunning, surrounded by mountains and with a river, a Pub and a steam train station. How brilliant !

The steam train trip is expensive but excellent. The Pub has food of variable quality. Standard pub fair really but its also quite expensive.

We found the staff to be quite friendly on the whole but you should bear in mind this is also a locals pub. Yes, you may have to wait for a drink sometimes

Yes, I will admit as some have said that the facilities are basic. There are a total of 2 unisex toilets, plus a small toilet/shower block for men, and the same for women (3 or so more toilets each)

Saying that we never had to queue although they shut the toilets and showers every day between 10 and 11 AM for cleaning. (It is right that other people say the showers contain moths etc, but I have been in a lot worse showers!)

I would definitely recommend trying this campsite

Having read the mixed reviews about this site we weren't too sure what to expect. We arrived 15 minutes early, the initial reception wasn't good, the cleaner in the pub told us we couldn't book in till 1100.

The site is in a good location right next to the Welsh Highland Narrow Gauge Steam Railway Station and the pub where the site is managed from. It is close to the main road from Beddgelert to Caernarfon, though the traffic didn't seem to be too bad while we were there (Easter weekend).

There is good access to Caernarfon and the North West region of Snowdonia National Park. It is a bit of a drive to the better known spots, Llanberis, Betws-y-Coed however.

Facilities are basic, there is a toilet block in a converted barn on the main field. This consists of 2 very basic, but clean, unisex toilets and a small wash hand basin. The shower, washing up and laundry block is located in the adjacent field which means walking over the railway foot bridge (past any passengers waiting to catch the train)! The showers were hot if not a little cramped and you have to share it with a lot of creepy crawlies.

The site has a gentle slope which isn't a problem in a caravan, the ground was fairly wet though. There a quite a few hard standings for motorhomes and a lot of hook up points.

The food in the pub is good and the staff friendly, though I didn't see anybody on the site at all to check if everything was OK.

Fortunately the weather was excellent during our stay which made the whole week enjoyable

Overall a good place to go when the weather's good

Visited this campsite early in the year with my 13 year old daughter and our dog, well before the camping season officially began and hence had limited options.

With a little attention to detail (and a smile) this site could be a lot better than it is, but it lets itself down in a number of areas.

On the positive side, it’s in a great location being in close proximity to Snowdon for walking. There is also the convenience of on-site pub and for added interest it nestles alongside a small railway station.

The pitch we were given (no.2) seemed to be 3 inches of turf over a hardcore base. I gave myself a blister putting the tent pegs in and due to this fact it took me 3 times as long to pitch the tent as usual. It was £12 per night for a two-man tent, but I was charged an extra £4 for my small 3-man tent, which to my mind was excessive to say the least. In fact given that we were the only people camping, it was expensive

As mentioned by others, the toilet blocks are small, there is nowhere to put or hang your wash kit if using the wash basins and the hand dryer was defunct. The showers are around only 2ft square, and again there was nowhere to put your clothes where they would remain dry, furthermore in such a confined showering space it’s nigh-on impossible to shower without the shower curtain clinging to you. Hand dryer in the pub toilet also did not work - there was a bit of electrical tape covering the dryer fuse socket.

To get to the shower block you have to cross over the railway station bridge, which - although no real problem - must be quite amusing to people awaiting on the platforms for a train on busy days!

I’m not usually one to grump at things, but I was disappointed also by the brewpub. They only had one of their homebrews on and that was bloody awful. The food is quantity rather than quality. We had planned to have a breakfast at the pub the following morning, as they list a full English breakfast on their menu for £7! Again I thought this expensive, but in any case it became a non-issue as we were up at 8.30am, and the pub didn’t even open until 11am, so we went into lovely Beddgelert, a few miles down the road instead.

My family and I visited the campsite in august 2008. I read some of the reviews before leaving and felt like there was going to be problems at the site. How wrong I was.

Upon arrival you check in at the pub and are given your pitch. Pitches are large enough for a decent family size tent. The site was flat.

There was 2 toilet blocks, 1 wash up area with a freezer for everyone and washing machine and one shower block. They were adequate as long as you removed the bugs life in them.

The pub is well worth a visit! If you don't feel like cooking then the pub has excellent food. They will also provide extra plates for children to share your meal, which considering the size of the portions is a good thing. I recommend the gammon!

The site was good, flat friendly and worth a visit, just make sure you pack your ear plugs to stop the cockeral waking you up!

We stayed at this site for 6 nights at the end of august( 27th-2ndsept.)

When we arrived we were disappointed as the site in no way resembled the picture posted on its web page.

Good points:

Beautiful scenery
Good location for exploring the area
Food and Beer at pub were good

Bad points:

Staff at pub did not bother to show you pitch or facilities.
Toilet and shower block were basic and you paddled in water every morning to take a shower
Only one sink in Ladies with no plug, so impossible to wash young children who are frightened of showers.
Plus you had to walk over the railway bridge to get to shower block.
Mens shower block was exactly the same, maybe a mop and bucket left in each of the shower blocks would have helped a little.
Unisex toilets on main site were really awful they smelt, and it wasn't that hot while we were there.Plus the hand drier did not work.
Pitches were very close together, and grass was long and site was pure mud in places.

We felt that the charges for this site were expensive
