We used this site for one night as a stop over on the way to the east coast. To be fair it was a very well maintained site and the facilities were clean but we found it to be quite soul-less for want of a better phrase. The pitches were hard standing but everything was a little bit too regimented for us and I think the site was lacking a little of the character that we thought it should have considering its location and views. That said, there really wasn't anything we could complain about although we probably would try a different site in the area if we were going that way again.
There really wasn't anything to occupy children and in fact we ended up in the minor injuries unit as our then 6 year old fell over and shredded his knee on the gravel! I would say this site is probably much more geared towards a more mature couple rather than a young family.

We stayed for 4 nights as a stop-over on our way up to the North East coast. Due to heavy rainfall we opted to pitch on higher ground at the top end of the site.
The warden had not warned us about the traffic noise as this backs on to the busy A66. We were quite relieved to hear rain hammering down at 7am to drown out the noise!
The dog walk was totally inadequate for our active Labrador and also dangerous, as the fencing was broken in places and a small dog could escape onto the busy road if not kept on a lead.
The toilet block was clean but is in need of modernisation.
A visit to the lovely and picturesque town of Richmond was a welcome escape, with a cycle ride along a disused railway and a chance for our lab to stretch his legs.
We will not return to this site as we don't consider it to be up to CC standards.

A potentially good site with breathtaking views of the Yorkshire Dales - although only a short distance from the A1. Mixed hard standing and grass pitches
Unfortunately some of the grass pitches are very sloping, the bins need emptying more than once a day as they were overflowing No guidance is given as to where the vacant pitches are leaving large caravans driving round and round the site.
The toilet block was only cleaned once a day and there was only one block for the site - so needs checking in the evening. Disappointing for a Caravan Club Site.

We spent just a weekend here so didn't have much time to explore, however the pretty town of Richmond is less than 10 minutes' drive away.
The site is 20 minutes' walk uphill from the picturesque village of Gilling West, it is a fairly steep hill so be warned! There are a couple of pubs in the village serving good food.
Wardens were a bit off when we arrived, they were sat out sunbathing in their enclosure with a sign on the door saying to ring the bell and seemed to resent the intrusion.
It's not a large site and the best pitches are in a separate area down at the bottom where there are uninterrupted views over the hills. There is a small fenced-off dog walk at the top of the site and the usual clean CC facilities.
A family decided to start playing ball games and exercising their dog on an unoccupied grass pitch area and nobody came along to tell them to stop despite strict 'dogs on leads' CC policy.
Not the best site we've been to, not awful, just a bit indifferent.

A very nice quiet little site. Ideal for lots of local attractions including richmond, Bedale and Northallerton.
A small amount of road noise but nothing off-putting.
Only one toilet block, but it is well serviced and clean with facilities for disabled. Enough for this small site.
Approximately 1 mile to the village of Gilling West for paper shop etc.
Nearest fish and chip shop is in Richmond, approx 4 miles but ask warden about nearby inn that will sell you take out fish and chips.
For Caravan club members, the site lives up to all expectations.

Nice wee site. Yes, it only has one toilet/shower block but that's no problem as the site is not big!
There is a dog walking area which runs parallel to the very busy main road, it's adequate for toilet duties but no use for exercise. Two poop bins on the short stretch though which is good!
Plenty room on the pitches and the little private cul-de-sacs make it all the more interesting! Easy to misjudge the sharp corner off the main road onto side road! Take care!
Bit of road noise due to location so take earplugs. The little village at the bottom of the very steep hill is lovely, and a short drive takes you into Richmond which is a beautiful town and well worth a visit.
Nice site. Would use again without question.

Passed this site loads of times when travelling the A66 but never stopped. This year on are way back from france we booked on for a couple of nights I'm glad we did it is a great site.
First of all the wardens are great, friendly and very helpful the caravan club are lucky to have them and I wish more of there site's had wardens like these. The site is kept very tidy and has good size pitches.
There is no play park for the kids but is a nice sized area of grass for them to play ball games ect. Now the A66 runs behind the site so yes you do get road noise but if you can find a pitch on the lower half of the site you don't really notice it. Richmond and its castle is a must for a visit. We will be back!

This site is very convenient for the A1 and A66 and you are aware of traffic along the latter but at the lower side of the site this was less noticeable. Very helpful wardens knew exactly which pitches were available and gave a good welcome. Although only one toilet block the site is not large and the walk is short from even the furthest pitch. Facilities were beautifully kept. The on site dog walk is small but sufficient. Ideal site for touring the area. The drive through Swaledale is spectacular. Richmond is a lovely town and the river area walk is to be recommended. We had hot weather and a paddle in the river was appreciated! Well worth spending time at this site and not just using it as a stopover for going on a longer trip.

Facilities up to caravan club standards, superb. Only down side is one shower and toilet block at one end of the site, other than that first class all round. Staff were very friendly and helpful.
A little road noise from the A66 during weekdays but reasonable for the weekends. A good dog walking area on site, very useful and looked after.
Richmond and the area are great. We found 'the drummer boy walk', from the town square out and back to the castle, very pleasing.
All in all a nice weekend away.

This is a lovely little site. The weather was very kind the 2 nights we were there. We arrived at 7pm on Saturday and the warden was really helpful directing us to the available pitches. It was spotless and very well maintained. There was road noise from the pitch we were on which can be heard throughout the night but it really didn't bother us but maybe those with kids would want to ask for a pitch away from the road.
We had a lovely day out in Richmond on the Sunday, it's about a 10 minute drive away. Richmond is a lovely market town with a nice walk down to the river and up along the castle. Its very dog friendly.
There was a good dog walk/run area on the site as well directly behind our pitch. It does say not to let them off and I didn't as I have long leads but I really couldn't see any problem if you were in there on your own as its all enclosed. Its not a massive area but very adequate.
Its our second visit to this site and would certainly stay again.
