Great campsite, well set out and great location for banham zoo. Few downs but does not effect the holiday, these are showers could be better (push button not great as have to hold in making you a expert at one hand washing by end of stay). Play park could do with swings and slide (but my two young girls enjoyed anyway as still a good park) and when they cut the grass, could do with collecting all the cuttings up, as wherever you walked your feet got covered in grass especially when damp. Other than those things a lovely park, my girls loved the fact that you can hear the animals from the zoo on the campsite. The toilet blocks are good apart from what I mentioned about the showers. It was quiet when we visited so there was no noise at all at night (apart from the animals). A definite winner for short family trips top notch site.

Generally we opt for campsites that allow camp fires and are more back to basics but this bank holiday weekend we opted for something with amenities and a few mod cons. As our requirements were not extensive we were very happy with this site. Based on other reviews we would say the toilets etc had probably moved on a bit and seemed quite clean and well maintained. Yes there are kids playing everywhere (including our own) but that's what being a kid is all about - I'd rather kids were running around enjoying themselves and making new friends than sitting glued to a computer game. Anyway, even though it was a bank holiday weekend and the weather was glorious there was still ample room and our two families had empty plots either side of us. We also brought our dog and although ours is extremely friendly and eager to say hello to everyone we kept him tethered and were pleasantly surprised to see everyone else sticking to the rules. The staff at reception were very friendly and helpful - all in all a great site, very neat and tidy, we'll laid out and maintained.

The pitch for our week's stay was large and grassy and there was no noise at all at night. Downsides were the kids playing football very near peoples caravans / motorhomes, playing about with the water taps etc. There were a group of youngster kicking their ball against the wall and door of the (somewhat scruffy) shower block. My wife asked them to stop and just got some cheek - they carried on.
We never saw the wardens at all, their caravans are there alright but they used to drive off in their cars every morning at the same time and not return till evening so no-one on site to make sure everything is okay.
Okay site if you have unruly kids otherwise best avoided.

On Safari in Norfolk ! Well you could be. Sitting outside in the evening sun listening to the animals in the zoo. What a cracking site.
Large pitches, big field for campers-with little restriction on where you pitch or indeed the size of your tent.
Toilets, whilst a little bit dated, were clean, and there are more in the rally field which are a lot newer, and don't seem to get used as much.
With a Londis store outside the gates, with a great fish and chip shop next door. For lovers of cider and real ales the Barrel Pub is there as well.
Well worth a visit, but as previously reported, this site attracts those with young children who can get lively before bedtime. However peace after 10-10. 30 pm.
A warden is on site to ensure the noise is kept to the minimum, and this must be one of the quietest night time site we have been to. Apart from the noise of the animals in the zoo. Brilliant.
PLUS: No charge for awnings or Dogs !

Went to Applewood as part of a Rally. We were on the rally field with tons of space. Due to the rainy weather loads of space generally. Facilities were good with plenty of hot water and very clean facilities. Well kept site with very polite staff and lots of leaflets for planning those visits.
Good pub nearby and a great take-away with a restaurant adjacent. Excellent Lonis open until late
Some footpaths around to explore surrounding villages and a visit to Banham Church well worth it.
Also went to the English Whisky Distillery at east Harling, entertaining tour and plenty of fre samples. Also has good cafe.
Left the Zoo until next time we go. Which we definitely will!

We picked this site at random, while we had a spare night.
The site is situated right next door to Banham Zoo, and we were lucky enough to arrive on the one night of the year that the Zoo is open at night, with a bar and activities going on. The 'Zoo-do' was great and was well worth the trip by itself.
The campsite is a fairly standard large open area. Well maintained and with a free choice of pitches.
I generally don't like 'family' campsites, but there was enough room to get away from the herd to an extent.
The toilet and shower blocks were large enough, and fairly modern. The gents was average for a campsite. Generally clean and tidy with just a hint of some nasty smells, and a couple of loud children who obviously are not fans of showers.
It was £16 for the one night for me and my Mrs in a 2 man hiking tent. I thought this was plenty and would have liked to see a further incentive to go again. Maybe reduced admission to the zoo or whatever.
The local amenities were fine. The pub was ok, if a little 'social clubby' for my liking and my other half said the local takeaway did the best chips she's ever had. There is also a Londis shop and a few other little shops dotted around opposite the zoo. (Including a hairdressers and nice little charity shop).
I'd say that this site would be ideal for families, and anyone wanting a quiet break should go off season.
In summary, the site is good at what it does, even if that is not what I normally look for in a campsite.

Just returned from a great weekend at this campsite on the Norfolk/Suffolk border so thought I'd pass on our good experiences.
The camping ground is not too big and really well laid out. It's located rather unusually right next door to a small zoo, so you can almost imagine you are on safari sometimes with the noises of monkeys and big cats in the distance!
The facilities on the campsite were clean and adequate. There was no shop or restaurant on site though there are lots of facilities close by.
There is a basic general shop just across the road from the site and we found a real treasure of a village stores at the other end of the village on an olde worlde Green next to an ancient church. The shop sells everything apart from the kitchen sink, and we returned many times to buy their delicious bacon, ham, fresh daily bread, cakes and other local fare. This also housed the local post office and lottery should you need it.
If you fancy a drink or entertainment there is also a great local pub across the road from the site called the Cider Barrel, where you can try a couple of very potent local ciders (try the Early Night cider at your peril!) and real ales. You can easily lose an evening here
The pub is really friendly, with pool table, pub games and sometimes live acoustic music, and has a huge area of green where the kids can run around outside while you watch the sun go down.
If you need a meal out right next door to the pub you'll find a fast food restaurant called the Trawlers Catch where you can grab delicious pizzas, fish and chips or a kebab. The fish and chips were some of the best I can remember at a really reasonable cost, and the staff really friendly.
The site is very well situated, with a really nice zoo (mostly endangered animals) right on the door step. There was also a car boot held here on Sunday morning. Banham and the surrounding villages are really quaint with lots of old thatch cottages, and the villages of Old Buckenham (lovely food at the Gamekeeper pub), Kenninghall and Quidenham all well worth a visit.
All in all a really great place to spend a weekend. We'll definitely be coming back here many more times!

Having just returned from a week at this site we felt we should add our comments.
Overall a good site with adequate facilities and good size pitches and layout. We were in a tent with ehu and these pitches are well spaced with hedging to provide shelter and provide a more private feel rather than a large open field.
We have been using this site for eight years for short and long stays. The staff are always friendly and helpful.
Although the toilet and shower block is dated now there is always hot water and the amenities are cleaned regularly. There is also an indoor washing up & laundry room which is handy when the weather takes a turn for the worse. These facilities are adequately maintained and ample. There is a further shower block in the second field.
The local shop is well stocked and reasonably priced selling some lovely local produce including fantastic bacon and fresh bread.
Now - one of the main attractions for us is The Barrel pub just across the road, which is well known for it's cider. Everyone is made to feel extremely welcome by staff and locals alike. It is also dog friendly with a huge garden to let the dogs play off lead. This pub is also family orientated with plenty of games and puzzles to keep children and adults amused. We always have 'a few' pints and pick up a kebab or pizza from the take away next door - both of which are highly recommended.
Good public footpaths provide nice walks and not far to Thetford Forest.Great play area for kids on site.
All in all a friendly and relaxed campsite which we will be returning to again and again!

We stayed at Applewood the bank holiday weekend.
Friendly reception staff with no hidden extras.
They let us choose out pitch, but to be honest, there's not a lot to choose between them. The field's divided into sections of approximately 8-10 pitches, and there's not strict guidelines as to how much room you can have. We have a Quechua 4 man pop-up and a Coleman Event Shelter (5x5 metre), so overall, a sizeable set-up. Added to this we had out car parked next to us, we still had plenty of room between us and out neighbours.
There's a fair bit of room in each section of the field where games can take place, so the kids can spread their wings.
Each section's divided by bushes, while the whole field's surrounded by 50 foot+ trees, so a good degree of shelter is provided.
The site has a good children's play area, and a few trees to climb!
The check-in desk has a few items on sale, generally ice creams and sweets.
Across the road's a great small-ish shop. It has everything you could possibly need food-wise.
Next to this is a food outlet selling pizzas, kebabs and burgers. There's also a pub. We didn't use this as we wanted to experience camping without all the trappings, but I believe it's quite good after reading other reviews.
The toilets and showers are adequate, but not exceptional. We never had to queue, but only used them once, at 4pm, so can't comment whether they get busy or not.
The location of the site is a little out of the way, but that's what it's all about isn't it, going off the beaten track a little? There are small villages within a couple of miles of the site, so if you need anything, you're not that far away from things.
Not sure if it's a regular event, but the weekend we were there there was a Car Boot Sale on the Sunday morning a 5 minute walk away.
No noisy neighbours as such, but there were half a dozen or so young teenagers running around till about 10pm one evening, but they weren't too noisy, and certainly weren't trying to cause any problems, just having a bit of fun.
I'd rate Applewood highly, as I have no complaints, but this is only the second site we've used, so don't have a lot to judge it against.
We'd love to visit again, and potentially will if we get enough weekends spare throughout this year.

2 Nights stay, weather not good, but OK,
Very relaxing, a little off the beaten track, Thetford forest not far, great walks in the area, not too far from Snetterton race way
Site was well laid out, wardens very helpful, toilet facilities not bad, but not the best, male shower block smelled bit rank, good disabled facilities, shop across the road was well stocked, site is a bit over priced at £21 per night even though a 4* rating
Site next to Banham zoo, well worth a visit, dawn chorus is great you here the howling monkeys singing! made you feel like you where in the wilds of Africa, LOL
Sunday car boot was best I have seen in a while, kicks off a bit early thou, 6.30 am, noise not a problem big fat hedge in the way!,
Overall opinion - the site is great and central to south Norfolk, would make a great stop over site or a few nights R&R, ideal for the family and great if you need to be central,
