Our first visit to this site although our son had stayed and recommended it. Friendly greeting on arrival and offered a choice of 2 pitches. We used Campingcheques and no problem.
First impressions were good and although it is a very big site, as there are far more mobile homes than touring pitches it meant there was no pressure on the shower blocks of which there were several. The shower blocks were cleaned frequently and a heated block was available near reception.
Well deliniated large pitches were the norm and our pitch was very private.
We didn't use the restaurant but used the takeaway a few times and found it very good. Much better choice than a lot of sites and pretty good quality.
Pool complex was nice, although we didn't use it we enjoyed sitting in the pool bar watching what was going on.
The main drawback to the site from our point of view was the wifi reception which was both poor and expensive (8€ for 2 hours). As the broadband speed was a max 2 MB it meant whatever site you wanted to access took a lot longer and ran your time down quickly. It could also only be used at the bar near reception or the pool bar which is not the best if you want to use Skype to contact family as everybody using the bars could overhear.
St Gilles not too far away and some very good value for money restaurants around the port and Grand Plage area.

We've just returned from our 2nd visit to this fabulous camp site, and our opinions of it haven't changed - we still love it! The weather wasn't as good as it was this time last year, there was a fair bit of rain, and it was very windy at times but there is so much to do on site that it really didn't matter.
I won't repeat everything I wrote last time, I just thought I'd add another review saying that it's still the best camp site by far that we've ever had the privilege of staying at - it's now a 5 star site and it's easy to see why.
The owners and staff are very friendly and welcoming, most speak impeccable English too. Marie-Helene and Jean Luc in reception in particular will bend over backwards to help you.
The toilets were cleaned regularly and never short of loo roll/soap/hand towels - and even though the site was busy being Jubilee week/half term, we never had to wait for showers/loos/pot washing sinks etc
New this year is the spa - if you get chance try it out - you won't regret it! It costs E25 but that's for private use for up to 4 people for an hour. My husband and I had a go and it was wonderful, so relaxing, we'd definitely use it again! There's a large spa bath with 2 spaces to lie down and 2 for sitting up in, a sauna and a shower, I didn't want to leave it was so luxurious. Children under 16 can't use it (would you want them to?!) but we left our little boy in kids club while we treated ourselves
We had another excellent meal in the restaurant - I had Greek Salad to start followed by T-bone pork with baby roast potatoes and a lovely veg dish in a creamy sauce, followed by the most delicious ice cream sundae, all for a set price, I can't remember how much it was now but it was less than E25 I think? Well worth it whatever the cost!
There are more premium pitches than there were last year, I think there are 6 now? They really are well worth paying the extra for, as you get a full sized fridge, a gas BBQ (these have been replaced this year and are now gas hot plates which I personally think is better and it was much easier to clean too!), a large table, 6 chairs, 2 recliners and a parasol (not forgetting the hour's free wifi a day too) We paid E26. 50 per night for our pitch - where in the UK would you get a 5 star camp site, in the school holidays, with hook up and all the extras for less than £22 a night?!
We've already decided we're definitely going again next year and have requested the same pitch for the 3rd year running - fingers crossed we'll be lucky and get the dates we want :o)
Thank you Anne, Eric and all the staff for another wonderful holiday

We've just returned from a great 2 weeks at La G. Now our best site we've ever stayed at.
I won't repeat all the details of the previous (very thorough) review but just add a few comments of my own and update a few other comments in reviews I've read:
1. The tennis courts are no longer free - 6. 50 euros per hour now.
2. Wi-Fi is 8 euros for 2 hours use - but note this is 2 hours of actual logged-on time, which I did not use up in my 2 weeks there. The signal is fairly weak, so you have to sit in the bar to use it.
3. The pool is very busy in August - unless you get there before 10am, you won't get a sunbed unless you happen to be sitting next to someone who leaves and you jump in quick. Personally, we took our own little portable chairs and there was always enough space to set up. The pool, however, is always full - don't expect to swim lengths (although the new covered pool is lane-only until 1pm)! Personally, I'm happy just going in for a dip to cool down and the kids always seem to find enough space to splash about (ours are 8 and 5 and absolutely loved it).
4. The sheer number of activities is breathtaking - kids club every day for 2 hours, tennis competitions for adults and kids, football games for various age groups, the garden fete every Wednesday is great fun, discos, live bands, dance shows, weekly pub quiz (we came second!), escorted bike rides for various ages - 3 mile family ride, 22 mile adult ride (mostly off-raod and almost killed me!) and a serious proper, off-road ride (which I was too scared to go on), taken by a resident Mancunian bike-nut. And ALL of this is FREE! Superb.
5. The site is 90% Brits but I don't see why people get upset about this - we met some great people on the pitches right next to us (on 3 sides, in fact), our kids played with their kids - it was great. On our way home, we stayed at a French municipal site where we said 'Bonjour' to our French neighbours and that was it - neither of us could say much more in the others language and it would have been rubbish if it had been like that for 2 weeks.
6. No-one seems to have mentioned the beach at Sable D'Olonne (sp?) - it is huge and the water is lovely, clean, shallow and rock-free. I'm not a beach fan and prefer beaches with cafes, toilets etc, which this has in abundance, so not everyones cup of tea. However, parking in the town is VERY tricky so be prepared to drive round for a while.
Overall, bloody lovely site, Vendee weather has been great for the last 2 years we've been and we will be going again next year (we handed in a list of pitches we would like for next year).

Myself, wife and 3 kids (ages 7, 5, 4) spent 2 weeks at this site. It was our second holiday at La Garangeoire, having also stayed there for 2 weeks in 2010. This in itself should say something about our experience.
The owners (Anne and Eric) run a very professional and well maintained site at La Garangeoire. On both occasions we had a fantastic time. On our second stay I experienced 'reverse polarity' on our pitch. Within 5 mins Eric (the owner) was on the scene and personally helped me to rewire my hook up. That's what I call excellent personal customer service!
We stayed on the Castel Premium Pitches on both occasions, which gave us additional fridge and storage, as well as tables, BBQ (although we brought our own 'Cadac', so didn't use the site's BBQ), and 2 Loungers.
All the pitches are spacious with plenty of room for awning, car and kids' bikes/toys.
The site pool is probably not the largest given the number of pitches (particularly if you include the guests staying in the statics), and getting a lounger can be a bit of an ask. However, there are small water slides which were a great hit with the kids (and Daddy if I'm being honest)!
We used most of the facilities on site during our stay with exception of the restaurant (but it looked really good). The shop and take-away were very handy for snacks, and last minute essentials. There is also a large Super you for all weekly grocery and shopping needs at the nearby La Mothe Archard (approx 5/10 mins drive).
Whilst not a seaside campsite, there are fantastic beaches close by at Les Sables D'olonne and St Gilles Croix De Vie (both within 20/30 min drives).
A number of people have commented that, in their opinion, it is one of the best campsites in France. I personally have not visited all the campsites in France, so am unable to confirm or deny. However, we as a young family, really enjoyed both our holidays at this campsite.
Question - Would we go back again?
Answer - Absolutely Yes!

We've just got back from La Garangeoire yesterday - I had very high expectations of it based on the reviews on here and I'm delighted to say it exceeded them! We had a fantastic holiday, one of the best I've had.
The weather certainly helped, it really was lovely, blue skies, hot sunshine and very little wind. Normally at this time of year it's approx 22 degs, we were there for 9 nights and it ranged from 24 - 29 degs during our stay. They're in the middle of a heatwave, or they were, it might have ended as we left, as there was a thunderstorm the last night we were there with quite heavy rain which cleared just long enough for our tent to dry and for us to pack away.
We had a 'Premium Tent' pitch which meant we had a little shed on our pitch which contained a fridge with ice box (VERY handy!), a gas BBQ complete with gas bottle, 2 reclining lafuma chairs, and a parasol and base. We also had a table and chairs on the pitch too and 1 hr free WiFi per day. Surprisingly there are only 2 of these pitches, and 2 similar ones which had a tap on the pitch too and which were much larger, they're supposed to be for caravans but they're happy to let tent users have them too, indeed both were occupied by tents while we were there.
When we arrived at our pitch we were initially disappointed as there were several large holes which were quite deep - we have a large tent (7.5m long) and the ideal place for it on the pitch would have meant it was over the holes which we weren't happy about. Because of the position of the fridge shed, we couldn't have it on the opposite side of the pitch so we went back to reception to complain and Ann the owner was very quickly on the case, she came to have a look and asked if we wanted to go on the neighbouring premium pitch instead which we were happy with.
The pitches are all large (some are enormous!) and most are delimited with mature trees/hedges. There are plenty of hook up posts and water taps dotted about, and fire extinguishers too.
The site is lovely, there are lots of trees and planted areas - Chris the gardener was kept very busy weeding, watering, pruning. It's obvious everyone takes very great care of the site, it's immaculately kept and Eric and Ann the owners are very visible indeed, we got the impression they run a very tight ship!
We heard very little noise after 10pm and regularly saw the night watchman patrolling the site. The barriers are closed from 10.30pm to 7am so no cars were moving around after this time which is good.
The sanitary blocks were very good - we used 2 mainly. I liked the showers in the block near the reception as they were larger and had a sink in them so you could do your teeth without having to go in another cubicle. I preferred the toilets in the main shower block near us though (L'oiseau) as they were newer - the ones in the block near reception must be the original ones I think and the bright orange walls were a bit too garish for me first thing in the morning lol
The showers themselves were really powerful and there's ample hot water. We never had to queue for showers or toilets, but then again the campsite wasn't anywhere near full so in August this might not be the case.
There were plenty of disabled toilets/shower rooms, these were really big and the ones we saw all had shower chairs in them.
There were ample dishwashing points next to all the shower blocks - the ones near us had 12 double sinks in them, as did the ones near reception. Again there was plenty of hot water and we never queued to use them. In the main they were very clean - any mess was because of inconsiderate campers not wiping them down or removing waste food etc from them.
There are also numerous clothes washing/drying facilities, I think they had a room with washers and dryers adjacent to each dish washing area. I used a washing machine once to save on having to take so many clothes - it cost 5E (plus 50c for a detergent tablet from reception) and our clothes came out lovely and clean, and it only took 25 mins too, I wish my machine at home was as quick lol. I had no need to use the driers as we took a rotary drier with us and it was so hot everything dried in an hour so I can't comment on the driers other than saying they cost 5E too.
The pool area is lovely.Although it was busy so I can imagine it being heaving in July/August?? Often we went there for 2-3 hours and there were sunbeds with towels on but no one occupying them the whole time we were there, so it was obvious people were using them in the morning and then going off for a few hours before coming back again which we thought was a bit inconsiderate.
The shop on site is well stocked, some things were a bit pricy but the bread and croissants were lovely! We used the takeaway a couple of times which was lovely and had a fantastic meal one night in the restaurant. If you have children you can take them to the 'Garderie' run by the kids club staff who will look after them free of charge while you have a meal in peace - we did this and it was lovely!
Talking about the kids club - as well as the ones run by Eurocamp/Keycamp etc, the campsite run their own. It was open Mon - Sat from 10am-12pm and our little boy (4) loved it! And it's free too. They also have 2 junior discos a week which he loved.
There is loads here for younger children to do - a huge play area, football pitches, pony rides, go karting, pedaloes on the lake, table tennis, games rooms, crazy golf, kids clubs, trampolines, basketball court.I would say kids up to 13/14 are very well catered for but maybe not so older teenagers.
Entertainment wise there wasn't too much on while were there - there were 2 bands but we didn't go see them, and a quiz which we didn't go to so I can't comment on any of those. We did however go to the 'Crepe Party' which was great fun - you buy a jug of batter at the bar for 7E20 which comes with little pots of nutella, jam and sugar, and a lemon if you pay 1E extra, and then you make your own pancakes at special tables in the bar garden which have gas powered crepe griddles on them - very entertaining! (and yummy too)
The staff were all extremely friendly and spoke very good English, although they really appreciated it if you tried to speak French, I can speak enough to get by and enjoyed doing so. They're all extremely courteous too, like I said earlier, I think the owners run a tight ship and it shows.
There's a large SuperU at La Mothe Archard which is only 10 minutes drive away from the site. There's also a fabulous patisserie there opposite the Post office which sold cakes and pastries to die for!
We didn't have many days out as the weather was so good we were happy to laze around the tent/pool but the following are all worth a look -
Apremont - lovely castle and lakeside beach area St Gilles Croix de Vie - fantastic beach
Bretignolle Sur Mer - the beach here is quieter but very pretty
Lac DuJaunay - nice walks and you can hire canoes or pedalos
Ile De Noirmoutier - stunning beach about 80 minutes drive away but well worth the trip!
Would we go again? Most definitely - we filled in a provisional booking form for the same week next year, fingers crossed we'll get a phone call in October confirming our reservation!

It is a fantastic site, we found all the staff to be really friendly and helpful. The only possible negative thing I could say is that you don't really feel like you are in France until you leave the campsite. By far the majority of visitors are English with a smattering of German and French but these are few and far between. We found the pool are to be always very busy and didn't go there often, preferring the lake, although you can't swim in the lake. Taking a pedalo out at 9am on a beautiful sunny morning and being all on our own was lovely. Be warned, the pedalos are very popular so be prepared to wait. There are loads of organized activities to join in, we all really enjoyed the archery sessions and watching the local dances of the Vendee. We visited le plage des dunes and found this to be a stunning sandy beach, with lifeguards. One attraction I would strongly advise visiting is the Puy de Fou, it is amazing. You can buy tickets from reception which give a slight discount and you can hire an audio translator at the Puy du Fou, from memory it is 7 euros for 1 person or 9 euros for 2 sets of headsets off one translator. A long day, but definitely worth it.

We had a whistle-stop tour through this campsite in our Bongo (Yeah!) and tent combo. Largely fine, although appears to be mostly English families relocated to France - we were another English family - so don't expect a French experience!
It was around €50 for a large, flat and clean plot, but WiFi access was €20 for the day, which is exorbitant. Mixed feelings about coming back to these Castels campsites. Perhaps good as an alternative to Centre Parks or Butlins.

We chose this site based in part on the reviews here and arrived with high hopes. It's a shame, as I think if we'd stumbled across the site at random we would have loved it, but as it was we came away with mixed feelings.
It's a huge site, by far the biggest we've ever stayed in. There's a huge range of different pitches, from the Eurocamp/Keycamp sections, static caravans, touring pitches and luxury pre-erected tents complete with iron bedsteads inside and decked areas with wooden steamer chairs outside. We tried to book a basic tent pitch but, despite phoning on the first day that bookings opened, we were too late and were instead offered a pitch with electric hookup. Unfortunately we had to pay full price for this despite the fact that we didn't use the electricity during our stay.
The pitches were of the high standard that we've had elsewhere in France - very large, flat, grassy, and surrounded with hedges for privacy. The site itself was well kept and green and staff were in evidence watering the plants, picking up litter etc. Some of the pitches had cherry trees which during our visit (late July) were dropping fruit - this led to a lot of sticky mess at the edge of the pitch and a carpet of buzzing flies. Definitely worth asking to be kept away from those pitches I think.
Bathrooms were fantastic as other reviews have mentioned. If I was being picky I would say that they were a bit of a trek from our pitch, especially with little children or at night - having a bike with us was a real bonus for emergency toilet trips or impulse trips up to the shop for a bottle of wine.
The facilities are brilliant, and we were pleasantly surprised to find how much of it is free - free to book the tennis courts, free to use boats on the lake, free to borrow equipment from reception. In most cases they ask for a returnable deposit. It's worth noting that they don't have freezers for ice blocks - you pay a 5 euro deposit to use one of theirs, then 1 euro each time you exchange it for a frozen one.
For us, though, the site was too busy, too big, and too full of Brits - probably at least 80%, a mixture of nationalities would have been nice. We really enjoyed the pool but it was very busy; people were sneaking down first thing to reserve sun loungers and if you got there after 10am you were laying your towels out on the concrete floor and being stepped over. The nicest areas were the kids' play area and - especially lovely - the lake at the back of the site. This was a really beautiful and peaceful spot with picnic tables and quiet walks.
The Reception staff are a mixed bunch - some super-friendly, some easily irritated, especially by (well-behaved, honest!) young children. We'd emailed in advance with some questions about the site, which didn't get answered, and when we arrived we were given a telling-off for 'emailing all the time'.
I think we've discovered that we (and our children) prefer a quieter site, and we'll be looking for somewhere smaller and friendlier next year.

Excellent Castels site - lovely setting, friendly owners, enjoyable (not too Butlins-ish) entertainment, well maintained and laid out with big pitches and lots of green space. The restaurant is good and reasonably priced. The kids enjoyed the kids' club, the playground and the marked walks around the property. We had great weather and the pool was sometimes a bit too crowded but otherwise good with water slides etc.
We found the Vendee a less interesting local area than Brittany or Normandy for example, but there are some nice places to visit eg the Chateau at Talmont and good beaches nearby. La Rochelle is also an easy drive. This section of the coast is less built up than the stretch further north by St Jean de Monts.

Me and my partner (both 27 yrs) have just returned from a brilliant time at this site.
All the aspects of the site have been covered in recent reviews, but would like to say I completely agree that it's a wonderful site that is well worth a visit (or two)!
Only people who may not enjoy are older teenagers or those looking for night life. Everyone else can't fail to have a fantastic time!
