My husband & I stayed here for the last week of August. Weather was brilliant and the campsite was packed. Not wanting to duplicate previous reviews - I've only a few things I'd like to add. Firstly, the fishing lakes were lovely - well stocked and very peaceful. One was a short drive (you could walk but it was a fast road) away but the other two walking distance from the site. Secondly, the on site restaurant was very good. The food fantastic & the staff excellent. One point I'd like to add, is that this is really a family site! Be warned those without children! We have none ourselves and although it wasn't a problem, don't expect to enjoy an quiet adult-time drink by the pool at anytime in the evening. Lastly, the area is lovely, plenty to see and do, beaches are great and we would return to this area although maybe not this site (until we've got a few rugrats of our own :-)

This was the first time we had taken our caravan abroad, and we were very excited about seeing what campsites in France were like. I had tried to book the site one year in advance, but was told that bookings were not being taken until 17th October. On the morning of the 17th I rang up, only to be told that we could not have the same pitch for the full 10 days, as they had already been booked up by the previous Summer's visitors. I could have one pitch for five days, but would have to move for the remaining five days. This was a little annoying, but we had set our hearts on this site, so had to accept. After a long journey from Chartres we were greeted by exceptionally friendly reception staff, and were led to our pitch by a member of staff in an electric buggy. The pitch was simply ginormous - in the UK they would have put three caravans on that amount of land. Indeed, just up from us was a family who had two caravans, two awnings, a gazebo and two cars on one pitch ! We soon discovered that we had left our bag of pegs at home for the awning, but not to worry, the reception lent us some free of charge. We ate at the restaurant twice and the food was outstanding. We swam in the pool virtually every day and although it was busy, it was not overcrowded. The pool was heated and our two year old was able to stay in the water for hours without getting the shivers. In order to get one of the limited sunbeds most folk were putting their towels on them at the same time as they were going to the shop in the morning to get the baguettes and croissants - a handy tip to bear in mind if you like relaxing in the sun. Arrive at the pool after 10am and you will not get a sunbed all day. Our six year old loved the horseriding, and liked the fact that it was mummy leading her pony around the designated route in the woods. If you don't know the way, don't worry, the ponies know where to go and it takes around half an hour and costs 8 euros, which isn't bad at all. There was so much to do on site and we didn't get to try out half of it. The kids clubs looked good, but our children were not interested in going, so I cannot comment. It always sounded as though they were having fun ! Our second pitch, again, was very large and had welcome shade from the very hot sun that came over after lunch. Everyone along the row we were on had been at the campsite every year, ranging from four years on the trot, to 30 ! They said that if I booked at reception before I left then I would be able to get the same pitch for next year. I said that we weren't going next year as we fancied trying the Dordogne - a comment which was met with horror by our neighbour. How could anyone only go once ! There were four shower blocks on site. The main one had the traditional showers - a shower cubicle and a small area to get undressed. There were about 20 of these and there was never a queue. The other shower blocks had what can only be described as mini-bathrooms. In each one you had a very large shower, a sink and a hairdryer (free). Some had loos in too, and several had baby baths built into the vanity unit. Never have we experienced such luxury ! There was also one almost full sized bath, which we used to bath our shower-hating 2 year old. One evening a band played in the bar, and on a Tuesday evening the pool stayed open until late for the kids to play and splash. This was the sum total of the entertainment on site, which was fantastic. We really don't like sites with cabarets and loud discos. Overall, and with the benefit of the fantastic weather we had, I would say that this was the best campsite we have ever stayed on. Our only gripe was that it was musical pitches every day, with folk having to move their caravans and tents around so that the regulars were guaranteed their favourite pitch. It was fun, however, to witness the ingenious ways in which people will attempt to move their caravan without taking the awning down ! We would highly recommend this site and will definitely return one day.

This year was our third visit to La Garangeoire and as ever we had a wonderful relaxing holiday. This year we had 6 weeks there and were still not bored at the end of it! A lovely family site, lively but not commercial. However we have decided to try somewhere different next year, so we can at least compare it to other sites in Europe. We did find this year that the pool seemed a little over crowded and could really do with being a little bigger if the site owners continue to expand. All in all, a fabulous site that we would definitely recommend.

This was our first time camping overseas and after a long trip from st Malo(due to traffic, dont travel on a Saturday)we finally found the campsite, the map of location needs to be more detailed but I guess it adds to the fun.
This has to be the best site we have experienced in our short history of 3years under canvas. It has everything, great for families with loads of activities, take the bikes though, loads of forest trails and it is a big site so if at one end the shop can be a long way to keep jumping in the car.
Owners have a very relaxed attitude, good for fishing(no licence needed,no red tape here ).good for pony treking, you lead your own horse round the site, great for the kids.Never had to Queue for showers, very clean(although why can sites not use a system of leaving shoes in a different area )
This is a good site and I would definatlely return, its maybe not perfect but i'd give it 9/10

I would have to say that this is the best campsite that I have visited so far and the only one I will have ever returned to. (booked for 2006) The pitches are enormous and well hedged with both the toilet and shower facilities absolutely spotless. The site seems to have struck the right balance between providing enough facilities to keep my four children happy and at the same time retaining that all so important small site feel that can be so hard to find on sites of comparable size. Many people return here year after year and I can certainly see why. The Vendee is a long way to travel to arrive at a site that does not live up to your expectations. La Garangeoire will certainly not disappoint.

August 2005 We spent two weeks at La Garangeoire in the "jungle" area of the site.
Postives: - exceptionally large pitches, big enough to accomodate our Sunncamp 12XP, our day tent, the trailer, two cars, a badminton court, and still have room for table and chairs. - individual 10A electricity points (none of this trailing cables round the back of other pitches and across paths etc. - plenty of activities, our daughter particularly enjoyed having a go at archery (2EUR for 1hr's tuition). - very clean facilities and the showers even had taps (and hot water) and not those horrible push button things that always cut the water flow when you're eyes are full of soap. - decent sized pool for early morning swimmers to get a few lengths in before the kids are up. - good family atmosphere, we didn't experience any problems with hormonal teenagers running riot at night or such like.
Negatives: - facilities weren't really numerous enough for the size of the site, we often had to queue for both showers and the toilet. - in the area where we stayed there was next to no shade in the afternoon and evening. - a bit isolated, you have to use the car to get about. - a bit too British!! I'd guess that about 90% of the pitches were occupied by the British (and Irish).
Other Stuff: - nearest super market is ~15mins drive away. - try the "les dunes" beach at the north end of Brem sur Mer for surfing/body boarding. - quieter small-kids friendly beach at Brignobles sur Mer (sp?).
On balance we had a good holiday at the La Garangeoire and we may, if we return to the Vendee region, use it again.

July 2005 We have stayed in a large number of French Camp Sites during our holidays in France but La Garangeoire is by far the best site we have stayed on.
We ended up here this year by accident due to the weather in the South of France being so bad. After days of rain, cold winds and cloud on the Mediterranean in July we decided to pack up and follow the sun. I got out my trusty AA sites guide and phoned La Garangeoire the day before we were planning to leave the south. Luckily, they were able to reserve a pitch for us which was great as I had been worried that all the good sites would be fully booked.
From the minute we arrived the next day everything was so peaceful and relaxing. The pitches are absolutely enormous, the biggest I have ever seen in France and the facilities are excellent. There are plenty of showers and wash basins in cubicles and although the site was full when we were there, you never had to wait and everything was spotlessly clean.
The pool is heated and quite large, although in peak season it is very crowded with kids splashing and screaming everywhere. We tended to go out for the day or relax on our pitch and then swim in the late afternoon, just before the pool closed when it was a little bit more peaceful. There are also 3 water slides in another smaller pool and a large toddlers pool.
We don't have any kids but from what I saw, the kids clubs looked excellent. As a former primary school teacher I was very impressed with the range of activities on offer for children and the enthusiasm of the people running them.
The thing I really liked about this site was that the camping pitches are well away from the main entertainment area so that if you wanted a bit of noise and buzz you could walk up to the pub, restaurant or bar where there was always lots going on. However, when you were on your pitch, it was perfectly peaceful and quiet.
There is plenty to see and do in the wider area and although the site is in the middle of nowhere, it is really only a 15 minute drive to get to the bustling coastal resorts. You can also hire bikes on site and go exploring the local area.
We usually camp as far South in France as we can which means that you are usually one of the only English speaking people on site, however, at La Garangeoire, most people seemed to be British or Irish and the site does cater well for this market. Excellent English is spoken at reception and in the bars and restaurants and the well stocked grocery shop so you never really get the opportunity to try out your French on site.
I would recommend this site to anyone wanting a quite and peaceful site in the Vendee however, I would suggest that based on our own experiences of camping in France, La Garangeoire is not really a typical French Campsite but is really more set up for the British holiday maker.

2002 Went there a few years ago. Keycamp/Eurocamp on the site, but it's not one of their busiest. Small shop & restaurant (bit expensive), sanack/takeaway, playing field, 2 outdoor pools - not v. large, but heated!! Some activities laid on eg archery; there's a lake and a couple of rowboats / canoes you can use (no charge when we were there), playing field. Showering/wc facilities were among the best & cleanest we have come across on a french site. There is a bar, but not noisy at night. In short - if you're looking for booze & discos - not the right site; if you're looking for quality site with good facilities - it's good.
If you need any other facilities, you'll need to drive (or cycle a long way). Good beaches due west behind pine forest; St Gilles-croix-de-vie a couple of miles NW on coast is fine town with all you'd need for a good day (and evening) out.
