We visited this site for the first time in July with our two young children and our 25ft tourer for a short visit arriving on sat and leaving on Tues.
The entrance to the site is over a lovely bridge which is over a narrow stretch of the lake.
Access is good, and reception is on your left.
The lady owner was very friendly and helpful.
The site is at the northern end of Bassenthwaite lake, a peaceful and shallow lake we last visited 6yrs ago. Our eight year old daughter was keen to revisit with our 3yr old son in tow as she last paddled in the lake aged two.
The facilities are very good, our electric hook was very near our pitch as was the fresh water.
The rest of the facilities are all together in one spot opposite reception with good sized toilets, sinks and free showers which are roomy and easy to use press the button and get a good warm shower every time! pot wash and recycling and elsan point are all available as well. There are also ice-creams available (very popular with the kids)
The site is very relaxing, not too many tourers and you do not have people passing your caravan every few minutes, only our own kids! - Bliss. We could relax as they played on a large open grassy hill, with rope swings at the top and a seat for viewing the lovely mountain views.
The thing we really liked though was that you could walk out of the site over the bridge and within 5mins you could be sat at the edge of the lake enjoying the views and it was not at all overcrowded, yet we were only 10mins from busy Kewsick by car and close to Ullswater - very handy.
Overall a very good site. The fact that we could relax even with two energetic children around is testament to how good this site is - we will definitely be visiting again as soon as we can!

Scenic site by Ouse Bridge, where the River Derwent enters Bassenthwaite. Fishing from the lake shore - tickets from Keswick or the Castle Inn. Several nice walks from the site; wildlife park and pubs/restaurants not far away - recommend The Pheasant, approx 20 mins walk on the road (no pavement)
Osprey viewpoint not far away, heronry within sight of camp. Keswick and Cockermouth nearest shops, around 15 minutes drive, or bus from the road by the site.
Large site, mainly used for static caravans but with a large, slightly sloping field for tents and tourers. Hook-ups and hard standing around the edge of the field.
Very friendly owners, small gift shop and information centre. Toilets and free showers reserved for tourers and campers - always clean. Small washing-up room and laundry also available.
Like most places in the Lake District this site gets very busy during school holidays, bank holidays and sunny weekends.
This is a lovely site which we will certainly revisit. The only improvement I can recommend would be clothes/towel hooks near the wash basins.

The touring area is a mixture of caravans and tents, but by no means crowded. A large area is left vacant for children to play on. It is surrounded by Static caravans, which house some of the friendliest people you could come across on a mixed site, always polite and offering good advice about walks and the surrounding area.
On my first visit one resident from there static came out and gave me a hand to get set up, which was made harder by the fact he had climbed Skiddaw the previous day and could hardly walk.
All in all a fantastic site and a one I will return to for a third time later in the year. Well done & keep up the good work.

Rang the site on speck as we had been visiting friends for the weekend in the South Lakes and as the weather was going to be so perfect (for a change), decided to travel up to the North Lakes to camp for a few days. The gentleman I spoke to was most helpful and friendly and said he had electric hook ups available and the price was very good. The campsite is in a beautiful area with lovely views.
We stayed for 2 days and as the children had returned to school, it was extremely quiet which was great. I would imagine it is very busy in high season as there is loads of space for kids to play in.
The grounds where we pitched our tent were lovely, there had been some rain over the weekend so the ground was a bit soft but nothing to worry about. The toilets and showers were very clean and had lovely hot showers. Pot washing facilities were fine too.
Very near Bassenthwaite Lake and we were able to see Ospreys from our campsite twice which was a bonus. All in all, a lovely, clean campsite in a beautiful location and would definitely visit again, although as previously mentioned, would probably visit when children are at school as I imagine it may get very busy and there are only 2 showers and 2 toilets in the block.

There cannot be many other sites which give you as good views from your caravan - they are spectacular! When sited on the pitches at the top of the touring field which ever way you look it is beautiful.
To the left is Skiddaw - which changes all day long from dark and forboding to every shade of green and in the fabulous sunsets it glows red. To the middle and right there is Whinlatter Forest and behind you is a picturesque pastoral scene of gently rolling hills speckled with sheep.
The wildlife is abundant on the park and buzzards and herons fly overhead.
Bassenthwiate Lake is just across the road from the entrance and there are lots of small 'beaches' around it where the children can paddle or Dad can fish.
The site is approx. 6 miles from Cockermouth (North) and the same from Keswick (South). Both towns have large supermarkets and have lots to see and do. We found that this year almost all pubs were allowing dogs to go in with their owners which is great.
This is a well kept mostly static caravan site with plenty of open spaces and has a good dog walking area. The touring and camping pitches have hook ups. The toilets are very clean and the rubbish and recycling area is kept very tidy.
There is a washing machine etc which uses tokens purchased from the super new reception area and also this year wifi is available at a very reasonable price - we paid £10 for 7 days.
The owners are really nice people who you feel like you have known all your life. This is a site that people return to year after year - what more can I say?

Beautiful site, well maintained and clean. We found that the pitch we had (on the hill) was quite a way from the toilet/shower block, waste disposal site and rubbish bins-there were all located at the entrance to the site so we would have liked one at the top of the hill.
The site itself is clean, tidy and reasonably priced. The entrance is a new conversion and is immaculate, inviting and warm. The site couldn't offer WiFi at the time due to BT problems but it didn't bother us.
There are lots of statics on site but these are kept separate to the tourers. Toilets were clean and tidy but could do with updating.
There is not much in the local area immediately and it is quite a drive to anywhere for any local attractions.

We just got back from this site and we loved it. The postal confirmation to place in your window is a great idea.
Our pitch was very long and narrow among the static vans, but there was lots more pitches on the large touring field, where the best views seem to be. If you want views request pitches 7 or 8.
The toilets and showers were great, even though there were only 2 of each in the gents we never queued even on a bank holiday weekend!
The dog walk as also really good, but if you go out the gates and up over the road your on the lake and it has great walks along the edge.
Ignore your satnav as it tried to take us to the animal farm next door. No kids play ground but they all seem to have loads of fun on their bikes.
We used the WiFi which was £5. 00 for one day. I cant wait to rebook for our next visit.

Husband, dog and myself had our 2 weeks summer holidays at Herdwick Croft. What a beautiful position for a site, we had a fantastic view of Skiddaw etc from pitch 6.
A five minute walk down to the lake, sheep in the next field to keep us company and add hours of entertainment, and buzzards nesting in a nearby copse.
Maybe other users could have been more careful about mopping out the showers, and keeping an eye on their own dogs, although this was only at the weekends when tents arrived. This was obviously not the owners fault.
Very friendly people on the site from tourers and statics alike. The statics were all well kept and not offensive to walk through.
An amazingly quiet location and very beautiful views from our caravan windows!
We would visit again.

We happen to be visiting Cumbria and this site was recommended to us to try. So we paid for 6 nights for a hardstanding, pitch electric hookup £18 per night awning £2 in all for £20. I thought this was great and nice views of the lake. But I wish the weather was better
The toilet block could need a chair putting in the shower and a shelve for your shampoo and soap if you are disabled it is hard standing so Stuart could you update them in the future ( Any chance of having service pitch you have everything there to do it )
We enjoyed our stay and be back again

Recently returned to the Herdwick Croft for the second time this year with my partner, having previously visited with my 10 year old son. Firstly, Stuart and Michelle are very approachable, helpful & friendly and really good people.
We stayed both times at the top of the site right next to the water tap,(which was handy) on Plot 7. The views looking over to Skiddaw & Dodd were unbelievable.
The touring area is a mixture of caravans and tents, but by no means crowded. A large area is left vacant for children to play on.It is surrounded by Static caravans, which house some of the friendliest people you could come across on a mixed site, always polite and offering good advice about walks and the surrounding area.

All in all a fantastic site and a one I will return to for a third time later in the year. Well done & keep up the good work.
