Our pitch confirmation was sent by post along with the sticker to put in the caravan window, so when we got there we could just drive straight in, which was good because it meant no waiting about at reception.
The pitches were large and gravel and we could face our caravan which ever way we wanted which was great for us as we have a big car and awning.
The showers and toilets were clean and well maintained. However the shower didn't have any shelves for shampoo etc which meant putting them on the floor which drained away so slowly I was stood in 3 inches of water by the end which was very slippy even in flip-flops.
The site is well kept in terms of appearances’ however we did have drainage pipes from the static caravans with lots of overgrown weeds sticking out - not attractive and would suspect do damage to the caravan wheel if you went over them.
Location was great less than 5 minute walk down to the shore of Bassenthwaite lake.
Will definitely return to this site

I was disappointed with this site and it had the feel of somewhere being improved. However on reading the other reviews I would seem it has been like this for some time (and I am not talking about the flood damage).
Our pitch was hard standing and had been used as a static pitch sometime before as the brown drainage pipe was still there (along with a very big thistle for company), very useful for draining our grey water tank.
I also felt our welcome was not very warm and apart from directions to the pitch, we were not given any other instructions about the site or surrounding area. It all seemed a bit too much trouble and the whole site does seem directed towards the statics.
On a more positive note the location was fantastic, very close to the Lake and peaceful.
I cannot add any more about the toilets and showers than what has already been stated.
This would not be a site to which I would return.

My partner and I visited this site for a 3 day break during the bank holiday week. We booked at short notice and had been unable to find a site closer to south lakes where we normally stay.
The site was beautiful and well maintained and in a fantastic location. You could forget it was a school holiday week it was so peaceful, unlike the rest of the lake district.
The plots were spacious in comparison with the majority of other sites we have visited. As with previous reviews there were only 2 toilets and showers each for men and women on site, which was not an issue for us as we have good shower facilities in our caravan, but could be a problem for others. They were however very clean and modern inside.
I'd advise people to ensure they stock up on food prior to arriving as there did not seem to be any shops in the near vicinity. It is a very quiet area which is what helped to make it so peaceful. There was certainly no traffic noise, the only thing to hear was the sheep in the adjacent field.
Bassenthwaite lake is beautiful and the view from the shore is amazing. We were really sad to leave and will definitely return in the near future

Spent 8 days at Herdwick Croft, just got back. The site is very clean and tidy with more than sufficient amenities. Good clean shower's and toilets. Washing up room very tidy also (provided washing up liquid free of charge,)
Stuart and Michele were very helpful and polite. The site is set amongst static vans which I found to be no problem at all, (unlike some of the recent review's). I also believe that some review's have indeed been a little hard on the site, perhaps not giving much attention to the fact that the owners are in fact having a hard time sorting out the recent problems with the flood damage, having to 'make do' around their own home whilst still managing to provide a nice site for people like myself who just want to enjoy the area. It says a lot when we can still enjoy what the north lakes has to offer even though the locals are indeed still having a hard time. Keep up the good work. Will definitely visit again.

I know this review is late, but have stayed here a couple of times. A really quiet welcoming site, with lovely views down the lake and towards Skiddaw.
If you can get a plot at the top of the hill as this enjoys the best views.
The toilets and showers are a bit of a walk, but we're on holiday so not bothered. No shop on site, but Keswick is only 15 mins away.
Its lovely to listen to the monkeys at the nearby animal park, and the fly by, from the Army plane a few times a week is great. It flies low down the valley from Keswick.
Will definitely be visiting again

We went for Easter weekend. The views were lovely, the price was not bad for the area and there was a lovely walk to the lake which is only 2 mins from the site. Toilets and showers really nice and always clean.
Only thing (and it is the only thing) I would say is that it is a little bit of a walk to the toilets from the tent pitches.
The owners were really nice. They have been through so much since the floods in November.
Would go again.

Booked well in advance for this site and received confirmation in the form of a letter and a booking voucher which was to be display in our window. We thought this was really organised but it wasn't until we were on our way there that we read it again and it appeared to be a little unwelcoming, advising us to make our way to our pitch etc etc, like the owners didn't want to be troubled in showing people where to go or being disturbed.
Upon arrival we followed the signs to our pitch, through rows of statics. The route was very tight in places because of unnecessarily large rocks, only to find the road was being repaired due to the bad weather they'd had recently. The young gentleman advised us to 'reverse' and use the other route?? - this we did with some difficulty. We eventually located our pitch, which was stones thrown on to the field, creating a hardstanding pitch. Due to the bad weather we'd had the night before we were due to leave, the pitch turned into a mud bath, which spoilt the awning amongst other things.
The scenery is lovely, very close to the Bassenthwaite Lake, Skiddaw, Cockermouth and Keswick. There's a circular walk off the site into fields and round the back of Trotters Farm.
The site is split into four sections, large number of statics, tourers on a bottom hardstanding section, tourers on the top field with a tenting area, who did encroach onto the tourers section. If you are lucky enough to be on the top field like us it's a very long way to the toilet blocks which consist of 2 toilets / 2 showers and 2 sinks in each - considering the number of pitches I did find this to be a disappointment.
Nobody came near all weekend, not that we wanted mithering but sometimes it's nice to know there's someone there. I did call at reception once and received a warmer welcome from another camper! Other than that we wouldn't even know who the owners were. We felt this site was more geared towards statics.
We would go back to the area as there are some lovely sights but we wouldn't stay here again, there are some nicer sites in the area which were better than this one for less than £20 per night which is what we paid.

We visited this campsite last July and, because of the convenient location, only 10 minutes drive from Keswick, decided to stay again this year. Reception was not as warm as last year as, despite having pre booked by telephone, we found the welcoming reception rather cold and abrupt.
Site is very pretty with gardens and potted pots around holiday homes maintained to a high standard. Need to mention the big pothole you can't avoid driving over on the access road. Seem to remember it as a small pothole from last year which seems to have grown much bigger.
The tent area is on a slope which meant we struggled to find a flat area to pitch up on. Around the tent area, there are two water taps that are easy to access however the toilets are a bit of a trek (not good in the middle of the night in the rain!) Hot showers are available all day long and free. Loo rolls and shower soap were always topped although soap at sinks were often empty. The toilets and showers are spotless and a pleasure to use. This year there was a sign up asking holiday homes to not use bathroom facilities during busy periods. However, we never experienced any problems when we needed to use the facilities.
When we arrived the campsite was empty but after a couple of days it started to fill up very close to our tent. We overheard several rude comments as we were pitching up, from a group of teenagers in a nearby tent who appeared to be unsupervised. They usually stayed up quite late, way after the normal 10pm noise curfew at most campsites, laughing and messing around. We were not the only ones they annoyed as other neighbours also complained to us about the noise they made and one evening we did overhear them being told to be quiet. There was no one from the campsite around to supervise behaviour around the tent pitches or control the noise levels.

Site was quiet when we visited, only one other motorhome on the hardstanding area, and few folk in the statics. So we did not experience problems others have cited - I never saw anyone else in the toilet block. Free showers, no hairdryer but there are two sockets, so you can use your own (and recharge batteries at the same time).
Pretty site - coming from Scotland, we're spoilt and found the views pleasant, but not stunning. Contrary to another review, the dog walking was excellent - ask the site owner where to go and he'll recommend walking along the nearby River Derwent on a public footpath, in a loop that will take about an hour (or just wander about). He will ask what type of dog you have, as there is live stock in the field (our Springer was only interested in swimming). Also, nearby forests and Bassenthwaite shore for dog walks.
Screened compound for recycling - and it makes me cross when lazy folk put their newspapers in the rubbish skip not in the paper skip. Generally a quiet site - the monkeys at nearby Trotters can occasionally make a racket, and there is some traffic noise, but the site is well screened from the road. Plenty to do nearby for several days - Cockermouth is a 'real' town and worth a visit, Keswick is mobbed with folk wearing hiking boots to visit the touristy shops, but has an excellent supermarket (Booths). Silloth-on-Solway golf course is a must, in easy reach. And visit the chapel of St Bega at Mirehouse for total peace.

Hmm. Well this is a very busy site with very few amenities. While we were here there were about 30 touring caravans and 11 tents. There is no shop on site-nearest is about 1 mile away -small sells milk, bread, cigarettes ,papers and a few frozen bits. The showers etc were free and pretty (pot pourri etc) but wholly inadequate for the number of people on site especially when people staying in the statics were also using them??. There are only two toilets and two showers for each sex. One pot washing sink!No where to go when cleaning in progress and a very long walk in the night, down a poorly lit roadway or even during the day. Nothing here for kids to do-no play area or clubroom so the teenagers hung out in the pot room or outside which could be a bit off putting when going to brush your teeth at night. No area for dog walking and loads of dogs-some poorly controlled. We had to move the tent as the area we picked was covered in uncleared dog muck! The area was very near the lake and river good for fishing.Great wooded area next to lake that kids would love to explore.Lovely scenery and lots of wildlife but not a site for people with kids unless they are keen walkers / canoeists. £154 for 5 for 1week. 4/10
