Myself and couple of mates felt like we needed a break from ‘the rat-race’ – so even though it was late September decided to head up to Pembrokeshire for a few days camping, walking and kayaking.
Our first problem was that most sites had or were closing due to it being so late in the year, then we stumbled across Tycanol Farm Campsite. So a phone call later and we’re pulling up onto the farm. It was pitch black when we arrived yet the owners son was at hand and walked us around showing us where everything was – he left us to it and we set up and settled in.
The next morning, climbing out of the tent was amazing. The views across the bay were spectacular – the sun was perfect and as it was late in the year we realised we almost had the campsite to ourselves. Cracking.
Whilst cooking breakfast we could hear a rumbling truck turning the corner and then we got to meet the owner of the truck and the site. He (who was ‘only just 80’) was great, not only was he friendly and welcoming he was also a font of knowledge and dispensed tourist information and leaflets at ease. Even offering to give us lifts into town if we needed it.
The following night after a day out Kayaking we asked if we could have a fire and the owner set one up in a barn he has on site especially for campers. We cooked our dinner over the fire and It was great. Later on in the evening the owner went round to the other campers (a few had turned up by then) and invited them along (with the offer of a glass of wine to sweeten the deal), we ended up having a great night chatting with the owner and guests, most of the stories he told did concern two Irish friends of his which always ended up with a giggle. Sat by the fire toasty whilst it being freezing outside with clear skies will always be a fond memory. Just to note the other campers there were all return customers, raving about the views and enjoys this experience.
The site itself was clean and fairly flat at the top with a slight slope on the bottom field (thou this had better views). The toilet facilities are basic, but the showers were hot and pressurized – perfect for aching muscles. Hand-on-heart it’s not the Savoy, but then again if you're expecting 5 Star Holidaying you shouldn't really be camping. The view, price and piece & quiet made up 10 fold for the facilities being a bit dated. There were lots of picnic benches round the site which was great. You were literally a minutes walk away from the coastal path and the harbour is a short walk from the bottom of the site.
The small town of Newport is a 15 minute walk away (sign posted from site)and we discovered some nice pubs and friendly locals. I also highly recommend the butchers in town – best steak I’ve had in a long while!
Had such a great time we bought the owner a bottle of wine to say thanks and will definitely visit again.

We have just returned from a 4 night stay here after finding it purely by accident. Mr Harries is `90 years old in 10 years` and is a very friendly welcoming host. He met us as we arrived driving up the field in his buggy and within 5 minutes I had been driven around given the tour. We have visited numerous sites in our motorhome over the last 5 years to all corners of the UK. For us, this is undoubtedly the very best most enjoyable place we have ever stayed at and we will definitely be returning. You pick your spot and a large heavy duty picnic table is delivered to you.
We picked a really quiet out of the way corner but each evening would go down to `The Cafe`, an old barn with furniture and a fire burning in a converted washing machine drum. You get to chat with everybody else, finding where they are from and hear Mr Harries telling funny stories and some good home spun philosophising over a convivial drink or two if you so wish. Everything is all very relaxed to come and go as you please, chatting with other campers or keeping to yourself as the mood takes you. The most telling pointer is the number of returnees we spoke to, some have been visiting for 25-30 years.
The facilities are basic but they are very clean, after I had showered I felt I really had showered. Looking at some of the comments here, this really is the `Marmite` of sites isn't it ? To those making derogatory comments, I suggest you keep to the formalised predictable settings of the Caravan Club etc. where you can mainly interact with other campers with little more than a 'good morning` around the pristine boring looking toilet blocks with their heated floors, soap dispensers and electric hand dryers. I would rather enjoy a real experience with the real people thanks very much.

Lovely site and useful picnic tables.
Great views across bay. Easy/nice to walk to beach or village.
I would not like to stay when busy, as may not be enough toilets or showers to support size of site.
Dogs seemed to be allowed to run free, I prefer them to be on leads so their owners can clean up after them, and they don't come bothering other people.
I would stay there again because I like the area, (but not if site was full or busy like in school holidays. )

There's hardly a site that can beat this one for stunning views. Shops and small harbour within walking distance. You can walk the coastal footpath which passes right behind the site, or you can venture into the Preseli Mountains for hikes.
The whole area is full of interesting places of historical interest. Or why not go winkle picking with your kids on the immense beach of Newport? Surfing, swimming, anything the like is possible and near at hand. However the facilities of the site are very basic.
Toilets and showers seemed to be hosed down every morning, but you would hope for some disinfectant to be used too.
The areas for tents are not always level, but hedges give some effective protection from winds that can be nasty on the coast.
The owner is very friendly and helpful.

Tycanol Farm is a basic campsite in terms of its facilities. Limited toilets, and washing facilities shared with washing up facilities, and there is no provision for the disabled. However up to a few years ago we spent many years holidaying throughout July on there because if you want stunning views across Newport Bay, direct access to the coastal path, the most genial and helpful host in the world then this is the campsite for you. It is not a quiet site, especially in high season, and as pitches are not marked crowding can occur. Newport village is a short walk away via a country lane, though the Spar there is somewhat expensive. Better shopping can be accessed in Cardigan or Fishguard. Do use the Poppit Rocket - a mini bus service allowing further access to the coastal path. One of our favourite walks was to take the Rocket to Ceibwr Bay and then walk back to Newport - no need to use the car - great. The area abounds in walks - the nearby Gwaun Valley is wonderful and a trip up to the top of Carn Ingli - which overlooks the area is a must. Staying at Tycanol is what you make it - come with the right attitude and you can have the holiday of a lifetime.

I have nothing but good to say about this site. The views are fabulous and the owner is very friendly and anxious that you should get the best out of your stay, whatever that may be.
The site is huge, three (possibly four) large fields, all beautifully tended, and we were invited to chose our own pitch. When we visited in mid July the site was fairly quiet and if we'd wanted to, we could have had a field to ourselves.
The facilities were clean and generously sized, yes, there's no sink in the ladies, but it was only a few steps to find one, and the showers are free, warm and unlimited.
What I think must be an old barn has been set up as an indoor barbecuing area, with benches to eat on, which must be a real bonus in poor weather. One huge plus for us was that dogs were positively welcomed, and the owner was happy for ours to be off lead all the time and romp with his lovely dog.
The coastal path runs past the bottom of the site, and it's a shortish walk into the lovely but busy town of Newport, where there's lots of places to eat, and one of the best butchers I've been to for a while.
The only small criticism I have is that fires are not allowed, but watching the boats in the harbour is compensation!

Stayed at Tycanol in a campervan in October 2010.
Sloping site with amazing views over the beach and estuary, and access to the coastal path from the bottom of the site. Only a mile or so out of Newport.
The owner was friendly and welcomed us on arrival. We were allowed to pick our own pitch as there were only a few others staying that night.
Unfortunately the site offered the very worst facilities I have ever seen. The toilets were housed in old farm buildings and were in desperate need of cleaning and refurbishment. There wasn't even a sink in the ladies toilet - you had to go outside to use the dish washing sink. I was too horrified by the toilets to even look at the showers.
The cost was high for the level of facilities - £26 for one night (including hookup and extra for the dog).
We stayed only one night and will not be returning.

My favourite campsite, and I've stayed at many! The owner is a fantastic host and encourages and participates in interaction with his guests. Sometimes when visiting during quieter winter months, he's taken us on a night out to his favourite watering holes, great times. The facilities are basic, but the prices are very fair. Anyone who complains would probably be better off staying on a caravan site/holiday park in my opinion.
DO ask if the barn loft is available, its 15 per person per night, has two rooms and two double beds and cooking facilities, you're certain to fall in love with it, the place is so full character!

What a super site! Really friendly owner too. We had a pitch with one of the big picnic benches and it was brilliant, made outdoors cooking/eating/socialising so much more pleasant.
The views from the field we were in are stunning and the area is so peaceful. If you like walking there are plenty of local routes.Grab a map and go!
There is a handy shortcut path from the campsite into Newport itself which is signposted off the driveway too!
The showers are awesome! I have never been in a shower so big on a campsite. There is none of the cramped balancing acts to be had that you get in some places. One is more of a 'wet room' than a shower.
There are plenty of sinks to wash up in and a tap to get hot water from.
In all a lovely, peaceful and very well kept site. I loved it and will visit again.

I hadn't been to this site for a few years, but instantly remembered why I used to use it so often!
We arrived at about 10.30pm, within 5 minutes Mr Harris had called by and invited us to a little gathering 'and bring a glass with you'.
By midnight we had got to know practically everyone on site.
Loads of space and the views are fantastic, having a picnic style table available made cooking and eating so much more pleasant.
We enjoyed a 5 hour walk the next day, found what we needed locally (including wild garlic) and a really good shower when we got back.
Sunday morning saw a car struggling to pull its caravan back out of the field (bad driving) the owners were there in no time to pull them out without having been asked.
Very welcoming, very friendly and such a stunning and well kept camping field.
I notice some negative reviews, very typical of some people's attitudes, those that show respect are treated with respect!
Its camping after all, not a 5 star hotel.
Relax and enjoy the site, it really is a special one.
