We've been to Acton Field 3 times now. Our first visit only happened because Tom's Field, 1/4 mile away was full on arrival. WE pitched in the near dark, late on a Friday night. Saturday morning dawned bright and clear and we were pleasantly surprised at our new surroundings. Although the site was very busy, it didn't feel overcrowded. The uneven, wild nature of the site means that units are 'naturally' separated as there are level spots between all the banks and dips. You could almost describe the field as 'terraced'
Toilet/shower block was under pressure due to the sheer number of campers but by avoiding peak times (8 - 9. 30) no queuing was necessary. Coin operated (20p for 3 mins) showers were fine. Facilities were cleaned regularly. Small shed with two freezers for ice blocks was a helpful touch. A van came onto site each morning selling fresh bread, eggs, milk, newspapers etc.
The old gent who comes around collecting pitch fees is very friendly and laid back and has all the time in the world for a chat if that's your thing. Nearby must do's include The Square and Compass at Worth Matravers for great cider, a pasty and a bit of live music and the fabulous Dancing Ledge, about half an hour's walk. (Don't forget your swimming costume!)
Whilst here, I took a stroll around Tom's Field to see what we were missing out on. Personally, I can't see how it's 'Cool' It looked overcrowded, over organised and over manicured. There was barely any space between units. Nice that rabbits were hopping around the site but I much prefer Acton Field and will be returning this spring

We stayed at this site to go to Swanage Folk Festival. This is a basic site and this is reflected in the price. The toilets are clean with soap and driers, showers are 20p for 3 minutes, there are also a couple of washing up sinks.
If I had to moan it would be to put a shelter over the sinks as you can’t do the washing up if it’s raining. The site is on very uneven ground, so you need to find a flat spot to pitch (there are no EHU), but this is a super site with fabulous views out to the Isle of Wight.
There is a bus stop 5 minutes away on the main road and plenty of taxis in Swanage, so you can park up here and still get about. The site is well situated for Corfe Castle and the village of Langdon Matravers has a pub and small shop. We would definitely return.

Stayed here for three nights, including a Saturday night. That weekend there were several events going on in Swanage/Corfe, including a Walking Festival, a Folk Music Festival, and a Steam (Train) Gala, hence a few more campers on the Saturday than during the week.
Good things about this site - the topography means it doesn't feel crowded, as pitches are kept apart by the slopes between the flat bits (have also been here for an August Bank Holiday weekend). The openness of the site means you get full benefit of the daylight/sunshine right up to sunset - no long creeping shadows. Then after dark admire the night skies.
The site is informal but not a free-for-all, and someone came round to collect the fees about half-nine/ten in the morning. Three shower cubicles (20p for three mins) and four toilets in the ladies (assume men's has similar), and two washing up sinks outside the block. This area is lit at night, but the rest of the campsite isn't - so just admire those stars! Freezer units to put ice blocks in also very useful.
Attracts a nice friendly, mixed bunch of campers. Peaceful in the evenings/nights.
Not so good things - water in the showers not quite hot enough for my liking, and not adjustable.
Personally prefer this site to Tom's Field (which admittedly has more, and hotter, showers), but don't tell everyone or they'll all want to stay!

After reading reviews on this site and the fact we didn't need to book we decided to give it ago. I must say we were not disappointed we arrived on a Thursday afternoon and didn't have to much problem finding a pitch big enough for 2 tents although the ground is uneven in parts this didn't pose a problem for us as we were able to pitch on a slight slope on the edge of the field, so even when the site got full we still had a nice amount of space.
The facilities were very clean even when the site was busy and we never had to queue for them which was nice with the children. I would definitely recommend this site to anyone who wants a basic camping holiday I think it would be very hard to find better for the price.
I really can't wait to return next yr for a couple of wks

A last minute decision for some family camping on Jubilee weekend left us feeling we would not find anything and we almost gave up, but found this little treasure.
This was our first visit here, friendly staff reasonably priced with good clean toilet/shower facilities (20p for 3 mins).
The field is uneven and natural but this allows for a bit of distance from other campers.
Fresh pastries in the morning from the van were welcome.
Ideal for access to Corfe Castle and Swanage, definitely visit again.

Back to Acton Fields again for our annual 'Boys weekend' pilgrimage to Swanage.
Arrived mid-morning on the Friday of the bank holiday weekend which meant it was easy to find a good spot for us to set up. Was a superb stay, owners are always friendly and helpful even if they did charge me more for my tent compared to my mates! (Ok it was twice the size).
The facilities have been described as basic but I'd say they are more than basic - see Weston Dairies for basic! Everything is clean, warm and work - however it is apparent the owners have spent some cash since we stayed last year with a refurbished toilet block (new loos and showers) which were great and clean as always.
Acton Fields is simply a large undulating field with a rough track running round it - so you need to pick your spot well to ensure you have a flattish pitch.
We have been going here for 13 or 14 years, for boys weekends and with our wives and children - all enjoy the site and the view.

Just visited this site on the latest Aug bank holiday, and had a brilliant time. As previous reviews have stated this is a basic no-frills site but excellent value in my opinion. It comprises of one large field which is walled in places, lots of humps but plenty of flat spaces too. Site is situated on top of a hill = Fab sea views towards Isle of Wight etc.
If you go during August then Swanage which is 3 miles away, holds a weekly firework display on Saturday nights up to the last weekend of August - don't bother going into Swanage to see these, really good views can be obtained from the site, extra WOW factor!
Owners are friendly & informative and collect rents each morning. Grocery van visits around 8. 30/9am each day - this was great and not too overpriced. If you need other provisions then there is a camp shop at nearby Toms Field or in Langton Matravers (the village) itself - all a short walk away.
Toilets and showers are basic women's area contained 6 basins, 3 shower cubicles (20p's required), 4 toilets - areas cleaned regularly, loo roll restocked etc. Visited showers each day about 7. 30am and no queues and hot! Half an hour later and it is a different story queue-wise! Only 2 basins outside for washing up area so be prepared for long wait or choose your time carefully, also no cover so rain would be a problem. Water stand pipes plentiful.
This is a great carefree site which attracts families and groups alike, noise can go on until midnight (as per camp rules) - we didn't have any problems with neighbours etc - all friendly/live and let live, one family group had a singalong until late but was fun and good natured - typical camp fire stuff. Talking of fires - no open fires allowed only bbq's/off ground etc. Dogs allowed but were all on leads/tethered etc. Plenty of space to run around for kids, fields aplenty to fly kites, play football etc.
Lots of great walks here too - go to Dancing Ledge, hop on the steam train to Corfe Castle, Swanage is a great British seaside town in my opinion too with safe swimming for kids. Totally recommend this site, it was great! We will be back.

This site is great, not sure what other reviewers are expecting of a campsite in order to class this as 'basic' - you're camping what do you expect! The owner was really friendly and gave us some good advice about getting around.
We had a 2 man tent and paid £8 per night for two nights, paid on the Saturday morning as we turned up late on the Friday. I think Tom's field (next nearest site) is quite a bit more. Toilets are clean, showers were decent but cost 20p for 3 minutes (or 40p for 6). If that isn't enough time for you then you should probably find yourself a nice hotel!
There is a van that comes round every morning selling fresh bread and many other basics, fairly pricey though.
Pub nearby gets pretty busy but the beer is good. Food is well, pub food not amazing.
Will come again when its not raining so much!

If you like a beautiful rural site, but with easy access to shops and facilities, this is a brilliant site. It is undulating unstructured terrain with a fantastic view of Swanage Bay and although it doesn't have its own shop, it's only a short walk to the next campsite where they have a really good one.
The best feature, for me, is that it is within easy reach of the bus stop so I was able to be entirely reliant on public transport. There are hourly services to Wareham (including Corfe Castle) and Swanage - from where you can get a connection to Studland and Poole. There's a Co-Op right next to Swanage bus station, so getting the food supplies is easy.
Admittedly, the toilet and shower facilities are woefully inadequate in the peak times. The staff are as frustrated by this as anyone, so are always helpful when things go wrong (the showers can be dodgy). Also, pay attention to their opening dates, as this site is only open for a certain number of weeks per year.

We turned up unannounced, with about 12 tents that needed pitches. It was a joint birthday event, & we were extremely noisy at times & was told off at one point, but it didn't stop the lady in charge enjoying our singing.
But apart from that the site was excellent, the toilets & showers (although basic) were spotlessly clean at all times. We actually did a return trip on the august bank holiday because it was such a friendly site. We are going back again next year too, in July.
