First time we took our convertible camper out of UK. We were intrigued after having met the owners at the N E C last year. Peaceful and child free rang all the bells with us. Welcome was great and we were shown to a very generous pitch with the right mix of light and shade, own water and electricity supply. A bit on the slope and in a down pour a bit on the muddy side, but heck it's called camping. We were not far from the showers and toilet block, nicely done up and clean. Unfortunately the water has to run a while until it gets hot (but this is only for the first one).

We had been wondering why to bring own toilet paper and why there weren't any bins around apart from the obvious in the ladies loos. Even though I would appreciate some bins around I do understand. What I have seen on camp sites put into bins is sometimes unspeakable. Perhaps people should think about this before complaining. If everybody takes their rubbish were it belongs the place keeps clean and mint fresh.

Restaurant was nice, small but nice menu. Bar prices moderate. Staff absolutely brill, friendly every time. Never a grumpy face, always happy to talk. Stuart and Sheila, the owners, have created a lovely place to relax after exploring this beautiful, and rich of history, area.

Whatever they say we will be coming back.

Chateau De LaComte Report 2013 Extremely disappointing

We met the owners at the NEC (twice) we had a very long chat regarding their site and amenities, they confirmed the site pitches were spacious and not under trees, and when you arrived you could select your own pitch, I even emailed the owners before booking particular asking about the trees, this is part of the reply;

Thank you for your email.

If you look at our website, this will give you an up to date idea of the layout of our holiday park.

I do not understand your comment about pitches under trees, as we do not have any pitches under trees. Are you thinking of the right place?

All our pitches are spaced out, and foliage around them creates privacy for each pitch.

We will be at the NEC in October should you wish to take a look at our new photo albums.

Therefore, we made our booking via the caravan club.

We arrived at site in a scorching 32c, (in reception a big sign stated pitches were pre-allocated and can not be changed) we were taken straight to our pitch, as this was under trees, we were not happy, especially as it conflicted with the information provided (see above). We were told we could not change it, so we complained and asked the chap to go and fetch the owner, to sort it out, he never did. We left the car and caravan to go looking for another pitch, but the free pitches were no better, so we parked up and made the best of a bad job.

Whilst walking around the site we were stopped by many campers (British) who had been treated the same way, some did move, despite the new ruling.

The toilet block is a good walk away from one end of the campsite, so if you suffer with walking difficulties and if you are allocated one of these pitches, you will need to use your car to get to the toilet/showers, empty your chemical toilet, and use the recycling facilities.

Our friends who arrived before us asked for a pitch close to the toilet block because of difficulty walking, they were allocated a small pitch where they struggled to level the caravan due to sloping ground (as many were) and were under trees. We also noted tents were allocated larger pitches than caravans, which did not seem well planned.

Again, the owners stated in the email; 'each pitch has privacy' again this is not true.

Limited pitches for ACSI members, make sure you get your card back when you have checked in

Beware of the road to and from the site, it is very narrow in places and the French locals drive at speed.

On a positive note, the staff were very nice and very courteous.

Bread can be ordered at reception the day before and paid for on collection

The site is quiet and Adults Only. Not worth the 4* ratings. We will not be returning here. We have been on better Adults Only sites

I arrived after a long journey from St Malo and was shown a pitch that was just a space it was terrible not even a pitch, could not put awning up and the caravan was on a slope and not even any space for the car in fact I would say not even a pitch. We asked to be moved but was refused and to ask in the morning again but did not give them a chance we left early next morning and will not be back again.

We planned to stay at this site for 5 nights and instead ended up staying for 10! It was absolutely idyllic. A really peaceful haven.

The pitch was a great size with enough shade, a water supply was available on every pitch and the toilets were a short amble away. We stayed on the small field and would stay on this one again.

The pool area is beautiful with plentiful loungers and parasols. The terrace and bar were great places for an afternoon tipple and there's excellent wifi connection available for a donation to Help for Heroes.

The negative comments about the site baffled me and I can only say the owners have spent a lot of money on upgrading the site which the photos on the website do not do justice to.

Of course, the site may not be to everyones' taste but if you are looking for a peaceful, rural camp site with the sole aim of kicking back and relaxing then I couldn't recommend the site more. And it was also nice to have a mix of ages, my husband (37) and myself (30) were not the only young couple on the site.

And the only sound you need to worry about waking you are the woodpeckers.

We have only positive comments about this site. We were going to stay for a few days but remained there for 2 weeks. The owners and staff were British and could not have been more helpful. We had a problem with our car whilst we were there and Stuart went out of his way as translator and in taking messages from the garage and breakdown company. Anyone going to the site should take a full larder as any facilities are some miles away - otherwise just feast on the breakfast bread and pastries which are delicious. The grounds and the whole adult only atmosphere are so tranquil - like a country club. It was a joy to be able to sit around the pool without youngsters screaming. The quiz evenings were a great success. Other reviews have commented on the lack of road lighting - but for us that was far outweighed by the inky black skies and the wonderful stars. Visitors seemed to be most British who quickly slid into the relaxed atmosphere.

I have read the reviews with interest as we stayed here in 2012. It was our first time on an adults only site and I have to say not having to compete with loads of kids (I have raised 4 children) for the sunbeds was a delight as was the pool. When we stayed it was very quiet (end of July) with only a few outfits on site. So few in fact that there was hardly enough for them to run the quiz night. (from memory there were only about 10 people there) Despite this the evenings that were organised were enjoyable and a good opportunity to chat to others on the site.

I don't have a problem in taking my own Loo roll BUT the main criticism of all the campers when we were there is that there are no toilet seats. That porcelain can strike a bit cold at times! Expects better for the 4 star rating in this department. Showers were good and hot.

We found the staff to be cheerful and very helpful. Always willing to chat and help with advice.

We did however feel at times that the site was being run for the convenience of the owners rather than the campers. They did tell us of an horrendous tale of 'rogue holiday makers' who wrecked a cabin and cost untold damage the year prior so perhaps this had affected their approach. Stuart was always on the go but the only time we saw his wife was when we checked in and at one of the social curry/band evenings when a lot of their local friends were in attendance. The restaurant food was good and well priced and dining al fresco is what we like. We are in our late 60's and would not deter others from going to this site as peace and quiet is fine but not sure we would go for an adult only site again but rather smaller less commercial sites of around 30-40 pitches. So long as there is a pool!

Turned up without a booking at this site in early June and what a pleasant surprise it turned out to be! The pitches are all large and each one is screened by foliage in some way. It is very quiet at night. The bar and restaurant were really nice and we had a great dinner and BBQ night on Friday with a live band. There's fresh bread and croissant on order also, which is bad for the waistline but great for camping! Location is great for some of the most spectacular sites in this region and the proximity to the motorway make it easy to travel around. You are not close enough to the motorway to hear it! The owners Stuart and Shirley are really friendly and helpful. Would appreciate the provision of loo roll though!

Never been on a adults only site before & not sure we will return, on arrival we were show to a small pitch ( don't show your Acsi card as I'm sure this has a bearing on pitch size ),

You have to pay cash as its 'so cheap we cant use debt card ' never heard that one before ! the toilet block is to far away & it would b good to no there is no toilet roll before you jog up there at 6. 30 am,

The bar was expensive, the pool lovely, only everyone sat looking at each other rather than talking !

Oh and their dog has a free roam of the site to mess where it wishes.

This site definitely does not deserve the negative comments. We stayed twice last year, early June & late August & enjoyed a wonderful time. The site offers Fully serviced pitches, own tap, white water drain & 10 amp electrics at NO extra cost. Showers were clean, with warm water & good high water pressure. There was nothing wrong with the shower block, it was a lot nicer than some 4* sites I have stayed on in France.

Washing machines & tumble driers are only 5 euros not £5. 00. I have paid the same amount on other sites too. The owners were always helpful & friendly. The restaurant is superb, good home cooked food with wine & drinks well priced. Friendly bar with free wifi. The owners mention that it would be nice if for the facility a donation of 50 cents could be made to Help 4 Heroes. This was not compulsory & I was shocked at those campers that moaned about this. Some campsites charge a small fortune for wifi. There is a lovely large swimming pool, well maintained & great for serious swimmers like myself. Sunbathing with no children an added bonus in August. Rain & muddy pitches. Having stayed twice, we saw the site in early June & then in late August, there was a huge difference. Some pitches had been destroyed with awning carpets, not really the owners fault though. This site is in a great, amazingly peaceful location, offers brilliant entertainment during high season that can be enjoyed away from the main camping area. So your evenings are not spoilt should you not wish to join in. Barbecue nights were brilliant. Quiz nights great for meeting people who would otherwise be watching their tvs on beautiful summer evenings ! Good location for site seeing, Rocamadour being close by, a real must see. Also the underground cave at Padirac. We recommend touring the numerous vineyards during your stay, a lovely way to to enjoy a day or two. The nearest supermarket is 10kms away, so we suggest you shop whilst you are out and about. But there is a small area in reception where you can get daily required items like fresh milk, butter, eggs, wine etc. Freshly baked bread in the mornings is a real treat, all you need to do is place your order at reception or the bar during the day or evening before. If you are looking for a get away from it all holiday, in a rural location offering peace and quiet you will enjoy your stay here. Lots of walks in the area but not great for cycling unless you are fit, bit hilly. Entrance road from the village of Carlucet to the site is not huge, but definitely adequate. The site policy is to leave before 12 noon & arrive after 2. 00 pm, so there is no need to worry. Would we stay here again, YES we would. Already booked & counting the days.

I also fail to understand some of the comments posted about this site. We had a great holiday in July with our tent. The pitch was an excellent size. It is very quiet, very peaceful but certainly does not seem unloved. On the contrary the owners were very cheery and helpful and made us feel welcome. The toilets and washing areas were clean and we enjoyed lying by the pool, also very clean. The showers were warm. The restaurant was fine and curry night good. All in all a great holiday. The only criticism would be the pitch did get muddy, particularly during torrential downpours and would benefit from reseeding for next year. We have been camping for 30 years and have seen sites truly deserving of criticism, but not this one.

PS The lanes are narrow because it is set in the middle of the French countryside!
