This is our ideal site. It is quiet, and any rowdiness seems to be strictly policed.

The site does not exclude small same-sex groups, but this did not result in any significant noise because the wardens made clear their expectations.

The facilities are quite basic by modern standards, but they are cleaned regularly, and the showers (only one male and one female) are hot and included in the price.

The location is great: right on a footpath so you can go walking without having to get in the car and go anywhere.

The small town of Hathersage is a pleasant 15 minute walk; good camping and outdoor shops there, one including a walkers' cafe with wifi (20 minutes free if you buy some food), although I didn't find the signal there very strong.

The site is owned by the National Park, and the wardens are clearly committed to it and to the ethos of the Park. We will certainly stay here again.

Have visited this campsite a few times but have stayed twice now; unfortunately the experience I had wasn't particularly great but looking at other reviews this may be just me being unlucky.

Nevertheless a review is a review and here are my comments.

The campsite is in a beautiful part of the Peak District and there are few campsites in the area, so this campsite does lend itself to being used.

Firstly the campsite is quite expensive in my opinion, I think I paid £6 for a pop up one man tent plus another £2/£3 for my car. So overall a £10 cost for a stay. Whilst this isn't ridiculously more expensive than others, the facilities are basic and a large amount of the campsite is on a hill.

The toilets are simple but effective, and were well cleaned. Although there was only one shower (I think, maybe 2?) (in the gents) - I assume 1/2 in the ladies too. This wasn't particularly helpful when Duke of Edinburgh teams all arrive with 80+ people on site. The wardens also didn't advise us of this when booking. There are good recycling facilities available. To help campers with washing up, there is a washing up area but this didn't have working hot water (but there was a hot water tap) on two visits.

Furthermore we were awoken throughout the night with cars arriving up to 1 in the morning and people leaving car headlights on as they made lots of noise putting up tents. This was mainly climbing groups when I stayed, although I am sure many user groups may also do this.

I found the campsite staff to be untrusting, I popped off to the local village to buy a newspaper (left tent up and the rest of our party) and was quizzed as to whether I was coming back to pay, what time and took car registration details in case I did not return!

Maybe I've had a bad experience, but I hope others don't have the experience I had! During the summer season of 2011, I probably used 50 odd different campsites so hope the review I have given is as far as I can be.

I loved this little site. It is perfectly nestled slap bang in the best part of the Peaks, in the Hope valley, near Ladybower Reservoir and Hathersage which was a fantastic, fifteen minute, off road walk from the site.

The site warden located me a flat spot for my campervan which happened to be right in front of the office and next to the loos, but this was not a problem and I was grateful for the level pitch. In fact, I think it was the only level pitch.

Facilities were fine too. I believe it cost me fifteen quid, which I suppose being July and being so nicely located was OK.

What a wonderful site, we had a very enjoyable stay for 3 nights.

It is a quiet site with good basic facilities. The facilities were clean (cleaned several times a day), the owners were friendly and obviously care about the site.

The site mainly had walkers and climbers. We were a party of 2 families with 5 children between us.

There were wonderful walks from the campsite and you can walk into Hathersage (about 20-30 minutes with children). There were a few shops and pubs in the village.

Will definitely visit again.

We stayed here for 2 nights in April and the weather was amazing as was the campsite. Great location for walking and great facilities. Hot shower and hot water for washing up. The campsite only had about 20 tents at the time our stay and was very quiet. The only downside I woudl say is that there are loads of signs up for 'no noise' 'no bbq's' 'no campfires' and they really mean it, even a small portable radio was told be to be turned off at 11am on a Saturday morning when played at a very minimal level, apparently it could be heard at the bottom of the site (we were in top of top field). Other than this I would highly recommend it and was cheap as chips at £26 for 2 people and a dog for two nights. Will be using again.

Stayed one night over what was described by another camper, as 'the busiest I've ever seen this site'. Despite this, did not feel crowded at all, and plenty of space between tents.

This was the first time my husband had been camping, and he loved the campsite, and we have already booked to go back.

Friendly owner, who greats you as you arrive, and allows you to pitch where you would like.

Set surrounded by woodland, with a stream beside the top (of 4) field, it was a lovely area.

The toilets were always clean, and an hour each day was set aside to clean them. One shower for male and one for female, but could have done with 2 each, but maybe in quieter times, this is not an issue

The price was £5 per person, and £2 for the car per night.

There was a slight slope in the top field, but there were flatter areas, and didn't notice the slope when sleeping.

Tried nearby pub The Plough, just outside Hathersage-recommended as food was lovely, but may need to book, unless going for an early dinner.

Not able to park next to pitch, but parking is nearby, just a few feet walk away.

Despite the number of people staying that weekend, the campsite was refreshingly quiet as darkness descended, no music/chatter etc. There were lots of families there, which may have made the difference.

Booking this site was really easy. Just had to phone up and give my name. But when we arrived there was no one around to let us know where to pitch so we chose somewhere and pitched up. Later in the day (at about 6pm) one of the wardens came around for the fee and there was no problem with where we had pitched.

The site is a good size. It was 'fully booked' for the weekend but did not feel at all crowded. Good clean toilets, showers and washing up sinks. But there was only one male shower and one female shower. Had to wait for about 10 minutes on one morning but the other days it was free. Daily postings of the weather forecast were very helpful.

The best thing about the site is the location. It has spectacular views. There are walks all around the surrounding area. Would recommend buying an OS map from one of the many local camping shops. Nearby towns a short drive away with many attractions. Including Bakewell, Chatsworth and Castleton. It did appear to be a campsite for walkers and cyclers with families mixed in too. We went for a lovely walk up Stanage Edge as featured in Pride and Prejudice.

We would certainly go back there. The price was excellent £12 per night for two adults and a car. The wardens very friendly and the location great. The local people were friendly and helpful too.

I would recommend this site for its location, cleanliness, friendliness, size and price.

Lovely little campsite, in a beautiful setting.

We were climbing over the BH weekend and this site is in a perfect location to enjoy all the climbs in the area.

My only negative is that on every gate post, wall, mirror, entrance it states 'No fires' 'No BBQs' 'No Ball Games' 'No frisbee' 'No Music' etc etc.

Given the size of the place (you can walk from the entrance to the top of site in 2 minutes) I did feel a bit overwhelmed by the various 'No' tags everywhere.

As others have mentioned, its a 20 minute walk in to nearest village - the walk itself is lovely and passes in no-time - even walking back after a couple of pints.

Nice pint of Easy Rider in the Little John pub which was quite apt given the news over the weekend that Dennis Hopper had died.

Facilities were all excellent.

Just returned from a mid week 2 night stay. Lovely site, quiet and unspoilt. Very clean toilets and shower. A bit muddy and apparently they can close if it is too muddy so ring to book before you go. Very friendly staff who come around to collect money and clean washing areas. Good meal in Scotsman pub near church - 15 min walk down to Hathersage. Bit longer on the way back! Super circular walk using our new book - Atchinson's walks, Northern England. Great place - Thank you.

Lovely little campsite. Quiet, only 5 tents inc ours during our stay. Good clean facilities, cleaned daily. Great surrounding views. We stayed for 2 nights midweek. Only minor prob was the midges at night and in the morning which could be irritating! Nothing to do with the site obviously and a citronella candle did improve conditions at night massively. Short walk across fields (15 min) into Hathersage. Great campsite!
