3rd time on this site for me and my lads, aged 14 and 12, midges were bad this time, stayed for 3 nights and didn't see the warden once, saying that no problems at all on the site, very quiet, as mentioned it could do with a facility for freezing ice blocks.
No shops near enough to just nip to, the cafe at the entrance was nice but very expensive.
Still no mobile phone signal on site, but at least there's one in beddgelert now, used to have to go to llanberris
£19. 50 for a night for 1adult, 2children and a campfire that is cheap compared to other sites in the area.
We will go back, again.

Stayed here for Jubilee weekend. Went here as we did not have a booking. Booking in is simple: fill in the form and a tag, put the money in the envelope and post it in the box. Put the tag on a guy on your tent. Job done. Facilities are basic but clean. One shower each for M/F and 50p a go.
Usefully there is a drier in the booking in shelter - this is Snowdonia after all.
We came here for the walks. The scenery is dramatic and the surrounding area is full of interesting features. The kids loved playing in the stream - crystal clear and freezing water straight off Snowdon. Made me remember building dams when I was their age.
The upper lumpy field was full so we went in the lower field which had been occupied until recently by sheep - took us a while to clear a space. The ground is flat and firm without rocks. We were not bothered about a camp-fire so we didn't try to pitch near one. The facility to have one is great and there is a plentiful supply of dry wood. Presumably this is to stop people foraging and damaging the country side.
Cars are prohibited in the camping field, which is OK for me. You have to carry all your kit to your pitch. Glampers beware. However, since there is no EHU here, I suspect that this is off the Glamping radar.
We had an excellent first day / afternoon. A great walk and satisfying BBQ followed by a brief share of a camp fire and a chat with our neighbours and then an early night. We were woken up in the wee hours by heavy rain which persisted until we packed up the following day. At times the rain was horizontal which made the pack up interesting.
Rain is obvious hazard for a site in this region and allowances should be made accordingly.
The only negative was the midges. They were not in clouds like you get in Scotland. They were all low down and in the grass, and on my legs according to all the little red marks which itched for days. Don't forget your DEET!
Midges aside I would go back here.

I promised that I would leave word on here if I was not likely to be the Site Ranger for 2012. It seems that even after a record breaking season I am to be replaced by a new face. Perhaps in the interests of customer satisfaction I crossed swords too many times with the powers that be.
Now then to my review of Hafod y Llan Campsite.
Having been site warden/ ranger for the last 2 seasons I can honestly say that it is a superb campsite. If, as others have mentioned, you are after basic facilities, in beautiful surroundings next to a mountain stream and at the foot of Snowdon you couldn't find better.
I recommend that you do not go on a bank holiday weekend as the carpark soon fills up and this is what limits the site's capacity.
Be prepared with your midge repellent (Smidge can be bought from the cafe at the end of the road), and also bare in mind that you are visiting a working farm so dogs barking, a muddy drive and lots of sheep (and associated mess) are to be expected.
The campfires are a bonus, a great way to make new friends by sharing a glass of your fave tipple discussing your adventures of the day.
The farm staff are largely friendly and will happily talk about what the National Trust are working on with the farm.
Cafe Gwynant, turning right at the end of the drive do a belting breaky and normally close around 5. 00pm. For evening meals I recommend Lyns Cafe in Beddgelert, good food without getting ripped off.
All in all providing you do not expect an all singing all dancing site with knobs on you really will have a fantastic stay a Hafod y Llan Campsite, I just wish I was there to greet you. Ahh well maybe it is time to move on!
Kindest regards to all those campers I am proud to call friends. Your support over the past 2 seasons I have been ranger has meant the world to me and Ann and for that I sincerely thank you. Hopefully we will meet again. Some of these can be seen in the previous reviews for 2010 and 2011.

Stayed twice this summer. Once with husband and kids. Enjoyed it so much returned 4 weeks later with friend, 5 kids and a dog.
Fantastic site if your looking for back to basics camping and knowing that you will get peace and quiet in the evenings round the campfire. Not for you if your looking for something going on at the site as no playgound, clubhouse etc. This is mainly a walkers kind of site. Ian and Ann look after the site and they are wonderful. Think that makes a difference as it makes everyone feel at home. They told us about the area and recommended walks etc. Only cold water for washing but lovely clean showers and loos. Don't forget your 50p's. The stream running next to the site is beautiful but beware. You will get bitten a bit. Can't wait to return next year, just hope to get a campfire as you can't book in advance.

A lovely site that I have been returning to every year for the past ten years after coming here several times as a child on family camping holidays; the first time was in 1967!
It is always a joy to see it remain unchanged and unspoiled as I remember it from those days.
It is in a beautiful setting, ideal for ascending Snowdon (or a couple of smaller peaks) via the Watkin Path, avoiding sight of the ugly railway on the other side. The path follows a stream which runs through the site with great rockpools further up for a dip in hot weather. (It does happen sometimes).
Daily weather forecasts are posted for the mountain area, an essential service for anyone wanting to go walking, particularly as there's no mobile signal for a good few miles around.
The facilities are basic, but adequate, well kept, clean and that's just how I like it. I don't want or need anything more (especially if it would increase the price of staying).
I love the back-to-nature aspect of it all and the peace and quiet you get here; there are few sites which offer it. If you want more luxury or want to party with a crowd there are plenty of other nice sites around, or just go to a hotel/B&B/Bunkhouse. This place is a welcome escape from the horrors of glampers.
There is a toilet block with sinks for washing yourself and separate ones for dishes/clothes. No running hot water, the cold taps are fed by water coming stright down from the mountain, so it must be boiled before drinking but is fine for cooking/washing. (Just bring a big container of water from home for drinking to save on cooking gas).
There are firepits and for £6. 50 unlimited firewood for a night. No electricity points, so bring your car chargers for phones, etc. Cars are kept out of the camping fields in the carpark nearby, which means you don't have cars driving by your tent or blaring stereos. The carpark also provides a useful cap on overall numbers so it wont get too crowded.
There is a payphone at the bottom of the drive, by the road, also a very nice cafe just along the road, though it shuts by early evening.
A fairly recent addition has been a couple of hot showers at 50p for 5 minutes, still more recently a tumble dryer (£1 lasts for ages) but to be honest, it was fine before without those things. As I said, Ive been staying here since 1967 and not missed them!
One thing I'm pretty sure I do remember being able to do when the original farmer ran the place, before the National Trust rescued the place after he died, was to be able to freeze an ice pack. That would be really handy, and as far as I can see the only thing missing. It would mean you wouldn't have to drive to the shops every couple of days (4 miles or so to the nearest) for fresh stuff and help cut down on a lot of wasted food in the bins. (Good recycling facilities, by the way).
It would certainly be higher up my list than tumble dryers, showers or hot water. Believe it or not it is actually possible to clean yourself in a sink or mountain stream. Keeping food from going off is a bit more difficult.
The wardens do a great job, are always helpful and friendly and I also have to express my gratitude to the National Trust for stepping in and buying this place when they did and preserving it. Please keep it as it is!
Almost forgot to mention, I think its a great place for kids. Theres plenty to do if you don't need it all laid out on a plate. I had a whale of a time here many years ago and its nice to see others having the same fun.

Hafod y Llan is an absolutely delightful campsite situated at the foot of the Watkin Path up Snowdon. Great for hiking. The location is great, very attractive with a river running round the edge of the campsite. Very peaceful, especially midweek.
Lack of caravans and cars on the field made it much quieter and more relaxing than most campsites we have stayed in before. The facilities are basic (no hot water), but well set up (obviously recently painted) and very clean.
The campsite wardens, Ian and Anne do a great job maintaining the site and frequently pop by for a friendly chat. We would recommend getting a pitch with a firepit - all the wood you can burn for £6. 50 meant we enjoyed a blazing fire every night.
In short, an idyllic and restful spot - we will certainly be back!

Just back from a weekend of walking/climbing up Snowdon with friends.
Found the Hafod Y Llan site to be a good small site. Well away from the road in a beautiful part of Wales - a lovely view from the site too.
We were made very welcome by the very friendly and helpful warden, Ian.
The fire pits are a great idea - I want one for home. (£6:50 per night all the wood you need)
We sat around the fire until bed time talking.
It is a bit remote - you wont be walking to the pub - its 3. 5 miles.
The site could really do with another Male shower, I had to miss my Saturday morning shower because we needed to get off walking. But that is my only criticism.
Will certainly use this site again in the future.

A lovely campsite, one to which I will definitely be returning in the future. Ideally placed for a trip up Snowdon via the Watkin Path, with a nice loop back via the Miner's or Pyg Track and then the footpath down the valley. Also ideally placed for some quiet footpaths with no one on them. But I am not telling you which ones they were, in case I find you on them next time!
The water should be boiled before drinking, so I don't recommend you bring noisy children or little yapping dog. Placid greyhounds are appreciated, as are people who talk quietly after 10pm and never play radios.
This campsite has everything you need - i. E. A very helpful warden, a good stock of fire wood, sinks, toilets and shower. And a location that means once you have arrived the car is redundant.
One tip. Bring midge repellent, minimum strength 50% DEET!

Stayed here over August B/H. Superb location, basic but very clean facilities. Wardens, Ian & Anne were stars, very friendly and helpful. The site is very quiet so don’t bother going if you like being loud and inconsiderate.
For people who like a bit of a more action there is a site just up the road. Most of the people camping were serious walkers and everyone had a chat and compared notes on different walks and routes.
Definitely go back again, would like to find more quiet and basic sites like this in other parts of country. PS Café down the road is excellent

Just back from a lovely week's stay at this site. This is camping as it should be, simple, basic (The washrooms have only cold water but this inconvenient was well worth it for the location - hot showers are 50p), clean and friendly.
If you want a luxury site with all the facilities, entertainments, etc. Then this is NOT the site for you.
If you want peace and quiet in a beautiful setting, with loads of space between tents, no cars on the camping fields (ie Left in the car park), and campfire facilities (£6.50 which includes unlimited supply of logs) then this site is ideal.
We used this as a base for hiking up Snowdon each day and spent each evening by the camp fire watching the stars.
We were made very welcome by the very friendly and helpful warden, Ian, who seems to work tirelessly to keep the place running smoothly.
On the whole, super, and we will be back.
