This campsite sounded promising; an extremely beautiful location with the mountains and the river, excellent position for walking or visiting other parts of Skye. The reality was somewhat different. Yes dramatic mountains, complete with clouds on top. Yes a babbling river, complete with swarms of midges! The weather was too bad to do much walking or touring! (yes I know its a hazard of camping on Skye). Also included is a busy main road (where can they all be going to on such a small island with a low population?!) You also get visited by sheep, who leave fertilizer pellets all over the site.
There are a few electric hook ups, no wifi, no chemical disposal. The facilities block is desperately in need of renovation, plenty of toilets, four showers and plenty of (communal) washbasins. However the surface was peeling off the formica (I think that's what it is all made of), door locks are dodgy, only two showers have curtains, the wooden boards to stand on after a shower are well past their use by date, I decided against risking a shower they looked too grimy.
Round the back of the block is the dish washing area, with little cover and tired looking sinks. The freshwater tap is fairly central on the site but it has a large puddle in front of it, tricky to use unless you are in wellies.
The ground is fairly level but with a lot of stones, difficult for banging in tent pegs and some boggy looking areas. Pitches had not been left clean by previous campers, left over food seemed to have been tipped out onto the grass.
Tents are pitched haphazardly, campers parked anywhere. We only paid £12 for the night, you get what you pay for. We were going to stay for two nights but decide one was enough.
On the plus side the 'roadway' is made of a very light stone so its easy to find your way round in the dark!
We didn't try out the hotel across the road for a hot meal & a drink.
If the facilities were refurbished this would be a great site, until then its mediocre.

Lovely campsite with stunning views of Cuillin. However a major midge spot - got eaten so much we decided to run away after 2 nights. Otherwise a great site with big shower/toilet block, clean (in a need of some refurb), hot water and showers always available. Warden was great, really helpful.
Campsite was always full, with caravans and tents. No disturbances, although it is next to a major road in skye. Could see lots of dogs - all very well behaved. Pub near by has the best selection of whiskeys, although service and food was substandard and some ladies at the bar were very ignorant (but we did have a nice boy serving us one night).
No problems of pitching the tent, but we did have a good choice of a pitch. It was a lovely stay even with the midges all around. Would love to return as the Cuillin hills were stunning.

Beautiful location with a stunning view of the Cuillens! Great pub/ hotel across the road, food was good and reasonably priced.
For whiskey lovers there is the widest range I've ever seen and if you don't like the stuff you'll probably still want to take a photo of the gantry! We did ask for a bottle of wine to take away which was £15 so best bring your own!
Facilities were clean and good showers! Used the laundry too which looked like it's machines were very old but worked fabulously unlike some other places we stayed which had much newer machines!
The lovely man in charge even gave me washing powder which I'd forgotten to buy! We Also had a dog who was made very welcome in site and pub as long as he was kept on the lead and you pick up any mess which I think goes without saying anyway.
Fantastic site as a base for seeing the island or as a stopover, we will definitely be back!

A year on and we decided to return to Skye and stay once more at Sligachan. Father and daughter on a camping trip, while Mum relaxed at home.
Arrived on a dry but very windy day and chose a spot close to where we pitched our tent last year. Bad idea! In future I'd always try sticking a couple of pegs in the ground before starting to pitch the tent.
The tent can normally be erected in 20-30mins but due to the high wind it took us nearly 1. 5hours. Some of this was due to the pegs not wanting to be hammered in to the stony ground.
Once again the warden was very pleasant and helpful, however I'm not sure if the toilets had been cleaned since our last visit, which may seem harsh but unfortunately true. On the plus side, there was plenty of hot water and the showers were always available, so it wasn't all bad.
We'd initially decided to stay for 4 nights but I decided to book 2 nights and see how we felt after that.
As it happened, we found a really nice looking site near Dunvegan and decided to stay there for another 2 nights.
It's unlikely we'd stop at Sligachan again having now sampled a more luxurious site. Albeit twice the price!

This site has a usefully central location on Skye, which is great if touring. The views from the site are amazing and we were pleasantly surprised that the main road situation was not too noisy.
We chose a hardstanding pitch with EHU for our motorhome which was ok but needed ramps to get level and the pitches are quite close together.
The facilities were adequate but could have been cleaner (ladies) and lacked any heating or handwash soap. The site is convenient for the hotel/bar over the road serving good and interesting food.
Being unable to pre-book was not ideal but was not problematic for us in May. A strong negative was that despite our £16 pitch fee there was no chemical disposal point. It was not pleasant to notice one or two people taking their cassettes into the toilet block.
Overall we recommend the site as a convenient short stay stop.

Just back from Sligachan this weekend. This is a site I've passed for many years and to be honest, will continue to do so.
The site is set in a stunning location, no other way to put it although very open to the wind. Shower/toilet block was very clean and spacious with ample washing up sinks outside. The warden was a lovely chap and enjoyed chatting. Hotel over the road was well priced on food serving local ale also and good for the family.
Now for the down side.
This is a beautiful site totally ruined by people turning up through the night with complete disregard to others, cars racing round and doors slamming etc. Two people turned up 12. 30am on Saturday, set up shouting at each other then parked their car 2m from my tent at 1am when the remaining field was empty. They then woke me up at 6am packing away before leaving the site without paying.
I feel the site has a duty to implement some sort of control on this, a barrier is always a good place to start shutting at 10pm followed by key entry on the facilities.
From what I've heard this weekend I am not alone also. Sadly won't be returning.

Hooray, we had finally arrived in Skye and this was to be our first stop. We literally just had to find a spot amongst many other tents and vans. The views of the lochs and mountains are stunning.
Unfortunately, that is the only good I can offer on this site. The Hotel over the road was soul-less, no character, where was the Skye culture? Then there were the bins! Overflowing, like a civic amenity centre, were the refuse collectors on strike? The showers and toilets were not too bad and all this said, for a stop-over, it did the job.

Our stay was pleasant until it started to rain overnight. That was when the midges came out to play. We couldn't even go to the toilets cause the sinks and toilet were covered. The warden and his dogs was very nice and friendly the day we packed up the tent was terrible we had black fleece jackets on and they were completely moving. Typical Scottish weather and you cant do anything about that ok for a few days away

Our family loved this campsite. It's not for those who want a luxury 'glamping' experience, but it had everything we needed- large toilet and shower block, hairdryers, washing machine and tumble drier, dishwashing sinks and playpark across the main road!
The only downside is that the site is very exposed (but of course in a beautiful location), so not recommended if it's windy, as we had to leave earlier than we wanted due to a tent pole snapping!
That said, we would definitely stay here again and for £15 a night for a family of six, what more could you want!

I stayed at this site for two nights with my 11 year old daughter. It was her first time camping and I liked the fact that there is a really nice playpark at the hotel across the road, which we made good use of in the evenings. The hotel served good food at reasonable prices and although there was no children's menu, they were very child friendly.
It's quite a tight turn into the site and the entrance is easy to miss (I did!) if you're not sure where you are going.
The campsite warden was a really nice guy, very friendly, chatty and knowledgeable about the area.
There were plenty of pitches when we arrived on the 1st July and we had no problem getting pegs into the ground.
The facilities were very clean, with plenty of hot water for showers and washing dishes. The site wasn't full so there was no queing for showers / toilets.
There's no shop on-site or close by, so Portree is the nearest. Buses do stop at the hotel, so I guess the backpackers would be able to use this service to get to and from Portree.
This was a great base for visiting other parts of Skye. Portree is a short drive away and has some nice shops, cafe's, restaurants and a lovely little harbour where you can go out on a boat if you fancy seeing some wildlife.
We stopped at the AROS centre where we had a nice coffee break and went to the Sea Eagle Exhibition. There is also a fantastic new swimming pool in Portree, which was a great place to spend an hour or so.
If you are interested in reptiles, the Serpentarium at Broadford is really interesting. They rescue reptiles that are illegaly imported and are really passionate about all types snakes, lizards, turtles etc. We got to hold a huge snake.
There is so much to see and do on Skye and we will definitely use this campsite next time we visit.
