Lovely open and flat campsite with a scenic backdrop of big rolling hills on three sides and views of the sea on the other, if you are lucky on a clear day / night you can look over and see Wales. Great site for walkers, (Coast and Moorland walks)and on regular bus routes,(every two hours.)
A few steps out of the Campsite leads you to the Village of Porlock, we came across, 3 pubs, Butchers, Hardware / Camping, 2 Convenience Stores, (selling Newspapers) Galleries / Gift Shops, Restaurant / Takeaway Pizzas, Church and an Information Bureau.
Porlock Hill is one of the Steepest around, The Toll Road to avoid Porlock cost around £2.50 and was worth it for the fabulous views. The Lower Toll Road we didn't attempt as several years ago we used it and found it was like 'Off Roading' and full of large pot holes.
Sparkhayes caters for all groups of Campers. EHU's are evenly spaced out, but there are no marked out pitches. Campers needing no electric can pitch where they wish. Nice friendly Owner is often seen on the site. We met up with some lovely fellow Campers, some returned yearly.
Basic Site, no Entertainment / Club House / Pool / Swings, but found Adults and Children had more fun playing outdoor games. We also had Sheep grazing over in the next field.
Loo's were clean (with soft toilet paper,)
But didn't fancy using the Showers as there was only a curtain hanging between you and the outside world, and found campers were having to get dressed outside of the cubical, several times I visited the toilets and had to manoeuvre round campers getting dressed. Plenty of Loo's and lovely soft Loo roll, but only two showers in the Ladies.
Yes we will visit again, but not near Bank Holiday dates, as the choosing your own pitch rule needed someone monitoring it.

Stayed whilst doing South West Coastal Path. Great little site. Very basic but very clean toilets/showers.
Its an easy walk into Porlock (100 yards?) from the site. Porlock has pretty much everything you need in terms of food and even camping/caravanning goods shops.
If you are trekking the South West Coastal Path, I would recommend using the road into Porlock to get to the site if its high tide rather than the coastal path as the former can get very boggy.

Great small but friendly campsite. Two fields and first come first served basis. Town is lovely and within walking distance. People in town very friendly even over the bank holiday weekend!
Owner friendly making his rounds in morning and evening. Shower block a bit smaller than we are used to with 2 children but adequate. Only two showers and you had to choose your time or else it would be rather cold but that was to be expected.
Washing up area small but adequate. Kids had a fantastic time even though there was no play park. Would recommend this site!

We stayed at Sparkhayes for our first ever family camping holiday. I was a little nervous but we all had a fantastic time !
Our sons loved playing with all the other children. They slept well since they were so exhausted and the campsite was very quiet and dark from approx. 9.30pm onwards.
A lovely laid back, clean, well thought out campsite with a very friendly owner and lots of things to entertain the kids in the surrounding area - Brilliant !
Whilst the toilets and showers were very clean if I could suggest anything it would be that there be more showers, but we got by just fine.

We arrived at 7pm, pitched then wandered off to the village. The owner was doing his rounds as we came back and is a great bloke, said he'd catch us the next morning.
We could see the sea, had sheep in the next field so location perfect, the kids on the site loved it.
The toilet and shower block ( only 2 showers but nobody in earshot minded at all ) were clean and well maintained by the staff who were really friendly and laid back.We had a great weekend there. Its so good we are going back.
As a starting point to Exmoor its in a great location too,all in all a damn good site

I had a short break at this site and was thoroughly impressed. It’s located within 3 minutes walk from the lovely village of Porlock. The site is flat and has two large fields.
Facilities are basic but clean. There is no camp shop but two convenience stores can be found in Porlock. Freezers are available to cool ice packs. It’s a 15 minute walk to a beautiful, if stony, beach and there’s a footpath to Minehead, a good 4 hours walk.
Porlock has two pubs and a various places to eat which is ideal for the evenings. I particularly liked the relaxed atmosphere at the site. Just turn up and pitch your tent at any time. The friendly owner wanders round every morning and evening to collect money.
As a single traveller I was pleased that the charges are per person rather than per tent. I would recommend this site and location.

Sparkhayes is a basic simple site that we have visited sivce the 70's
Always friendly, always clean, turn up and pitch.
Walk into the pub.
Porlock is a very pretty village set in the beautiful surroundings of the hills. Porlock hill is a challenge to walk up.
Good pubs abound and food in the village is acceptable.
Nice stroll down to Porlock Weir going along the seafront and back via the road. Also a good walk into Bossington when the sun shines.
Sparkhayes is really ideal a a stop off place for a night or two or as part of a touring holiday.
Will probably finish the camping year with a late visit in September

We have used this site about 20 times, for short weekend breaks and longer week stays.
The site manager is an amiable chap and keeps and eye on the site very closely.
There's a fridge/freezer to use on site-just remember to label them.
Shower block is a little antiquated but does fine, and if you have an infant the laundry room sink is big enough to bath them in (as recommended by another mother).
Very spacious site, plenty of space to group camp with more than one tent.
Easy enough to pitch on site, I don't think we have bent a tent peg once.
Be warned, this site is popular with DofE, and we have once gone out for the day leaving an empty site to come back to being surrounded.
Porlock has everything you need food and drink wise, but no petrol station - Minehead is a 10-20 minute drive if you need anything from the supermarkets.
There are plenty of things to see and do within a reasonable distance from the site.
Porlock hill is a scary prospect for many car drivers, the smell of cooked breaks and clutches is quite common. There is a toll road, and its worth paying if you don't handle hills well.

Having looked in on the site last year, and after reading other reviews we thought we’d give it a go. Very laid back arrival, you just arrive, pick your spot and pitch. The site owner wanders around twice daily and collects any fees.
The single block of facilities are to say the least a “little tired”, although clean, and if you pick your time carefully very quiet. The site consists of two fairly level fields, which to all intents and purposes are right in the middle of the lovely Somerset village of Porlock.
There are quite a few pubs and restaurants in the village offering everything from bar snacks to high quality local fare. The village also has a small supermarket and a hardware/camping supplies shop all within an easy 5 minute walk from the site.
On arrival (Saturday) we had a good choice of pitches, and found the site to be very quiet in the evenings, pretty ideal. However on Monday after a very good meal at the Top-Ship we returned to find a large group of 4 man tents pitched very close, their cars almost on top of our guys. This tainted the rest of our stay.
That laid back “pitch where you want approach” is all well and good, but when unreasonable, somewhat rowdy groups arrive it lets what could be an ideally situated little gem of a site down. If you are back packing the Coastal path and need an overnight stay it’s ideal, if you want guaranteed peace and quiet perhaps not. Would I go back, in a motor home yes, in a tent no I’m sorry to say.

We spent a week in Exmoor during a very wet November and were unable to find any open campsites due to the weather.
After a few nights of wild camping, we desperately needed a shower and so after asking around in Porlock, were directed to this site.
Not only had this campsite closed for the winter but the owner was in the middle of trying to sort out blocked drains and a burst water pipe on the site.
Despite this, he let us camp free of charge for several nights and let us use all the facilities including the showers once the water had been sorted out!
We couldn't thank him enough for his kindness and would love to go back when the site is actually open as Porlock is such a lovely place and this campsite is in a great location.
