Stayed for two nights with two tents and a car. Only £5 pppn which is excellent value. Site is mostly for caravans but tents have enough room.
Short grassy walk to shower block which consists (male side) of a shower, two toilets, urinal and two sinks. Hot water available. Shaving plugs available.
Road is a little noisy but not bad, ford nearby for kids and lots of walks. Small Co-op open 9-5 about 5 mins walk.
Pub in village serves excellent homecooked food. Nearby lots of walks, plenty to do. Owners come and collect payment when pitched.

We arranged to stay at this site last minute when our new tent arrived.
We were surprised to find that it was right next to a main road. We had to call the phone number which was on a notice board when we drove in to let the site manager know that we were there. She came right away and guided us to a spot.
There wasn't a lot of room for tents, and we did feel all a bit close. The field is rectangular and quite thin/long. We were placed under a tree which we weren't too happy about as it was raining heavily and a lot of sap/leaves etc fell on our tent. The only other alternative to camping under the trees was to camp next to the road.
There were two toilets, clean but small and one shower (as far as I can remember).
There's plenty scope to walk in the area and there's a small pub up the road. Other than that, there's not much about.
We only stayed for one night as the site was so minimal. And the occasional passing car seemed so loud during the night.
It didn't help that the river and trees were extremely loud during the night due to the heavy rain, and I'm usually a deep sleeper! My partner who is a light sleeper barely had a wink!
Minimal, clean, small, nice site if you don't want much but we won't be staying here again.

A great little site with limited room for tents.
You have to phone the owner on arrival to arrange your pitch (the number is on a notice board at the entrance of the site). The owner is very friendly and easy going.
It cost us £4.00 per adult and £2.50 per child per night, which I thought was very reasonable.
Electrical hook-ups were a godsend on such a small site, and cheap at £3.00 per day.
The river Wear runs on one side of the site and the A689 runs to the other. None of which interrupted my sleep.
The toilet/shower blocks were acceptable, but the hot water is VERY hot, so be careful with children.
A village shop, post office and pub are all within 100 yards of the site.
One word of warning. The midges are a nightmare, so make sure you have plenty of repellent, and anti sting cream.
Overall, very happy with our visit.

My son and I visited in early August 09. Heather, the site owner greeted us with a smile and some free insect repellent while we pitched our tent, a lovely gesture. The site is well maintained and positioned within a very quiet small village. Good washing facilities with toilet/shower block. Lovely river walk recommended. Perfect for a quiet getaway and at £6.50 for me and my son this represented very good value for money. Only downside was the '11pm no noise rules' weren't adhered to by a rowdy group of middle-aged campers and this wasn't dealt with. Apart from that, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, have recommended the site to loads of friends and will definitely be back.

It's been a while since my last review of this site, but reading it now I think I've been quite unfair!
We've just spent two weekends in a row here, at a mere £13 a night for our camper and awning, which is very good value for money when we are 2 adults, 2 teenagers and a dog, no charge for the dog! Free hot water for washing up and a spotless toilet block with hot showers are a luxury compared to some other sites we've stayed on since!
The owner is a treasure, she found us the perfect spot to camp both times and regularly checks the immaculately kept site.
A couple of hundred yards to the local shop which stocks most basic essentials, a couple of hundred more the the local pub, a charming place with tables on the banks of the river Wier where you can sip a pint whilst watching the trout jump. I'd also recommend the half hour walk through Slitt Wood to Slitt mine, a Site of Scientific Interest not least for it's orchids, and also the perfect place for a picnic, it beauty is breathtaking.
All in all this site is perfect, well maintained, superb value for money, tremendous location, friendly owner, friendly locals, and the fresh dales air. We will be back .

This is a great little site which appears to have been recently upgraded. There are approximately 10 hard standing pitches and space for tents. The facilities include toilets, showers and an outside washing up area with hot water. All were very clean.
We paid £13 per night for our van with hook-up. The site doesn't take bookings, you ring the site manager when you arrive on site. The website says ask at the petrol station but this has now closed.
Westgate is a nice village with a shop and pub, although we didn't find the pub very friendly - despite being in a walking area we couldn't take our dog into the pub (The Hare and Hounds!). They were doing food but you had to go into a separate dining room, we didn't fancy that so didn't bother.
If you like walking the area is fabulous, and very quiet. We met a couple on the site who use it regularly as you don't have to book.
It is between the road and river - a great place for kids to get wet and muddy !

It's a lovely basic site, right next to the river wier, with good walks in the local area, and within in driving distance of the heated outdoor swimming pool at Stanhope, and Killhope and Nenthead lead mines which are well worth a visit. We've stayed here three times now and have never had any complaints, however, for the price you would expect a lot more.

Excellent campsite with simple facilities, set in rural Weardale. Many walks from Westgate itself high into Weardale or over into Teesdale. Warden very friendly and easy going. Enquires at the filling station. Pub with excellent food not far from campsite.

26th and 27th May 2003 Small campsite with basic facilities, but safe, quite and in a beautiful location. Stanhope not far with heated outdoor swimming pool - great for the kids.
