We stayed at this site recently(july09) Our tent pitch size was good although the ground where we were situated was a little lumpy! The site is quite far out from everywhere so we had planned to stay on site for the majority of the stay. It is advertised as having an indoor pool which it does indeed have but it is not advertised that each person is only allowed a 45 min session per day of their stay! Tthis was a great disappointment to my children as 45 min is not long, I went along at 9.30 in the morning and only just got a space for the day as it quickly fills up. The pool changing areas are not great either as only 3 changing rooms and with everyone coming out at the same time it meant myself and my 3 yr old had to stand dripping wet for 10 mins before being able to change.
There is a beach within walking distance off the site but the area in which you have to walk through is a bit drab with old houses/cottsges a lot of which in disrepair. We went to the beach 3 times during our stay all at different times of day and each time the tide was out by about 2 miles and really the water was not accessible as the sand is horribly gooey and dirty and stains your clothes, shoes and skin
The first night we arrived we had the people in the hire vans behind us blasting music till very late on which kept my children awake and although their was a security guy going round in a wee golf buggy nothing was said to the family about the volume of the music
The swing park play area was full of glass so I couldn't allow my 3 and 6 yrs old play there and there is a cash machine in the complex with no money in it, there is however a cashback facility in the shop just outside of the park.
Now all the bad things are out the road I feel I have to make up with some good sides .The toilet block was generally clean, the dishwashing area was very clean and indoors which was good in the rain, the shop is very well equpped with everything from tent pegs to bread etc. The site was generally clean

Spent 6 nights, 2 adults, 2 children 5 and 6. The touring pitches are dry, flat and serviced, and plenty of room. The venue was good, the staff worked hard and were polite and enthusiastic. The pool has a booking system as stated earlier, so block book, but note you come out with more than hint of domestos as the chlorine is on the limit. In the touring area take a screwdriver to the showers and clean the shower head before and then you will never get a better shower, we will go to a Park Dean site again but not this one due to location. Ring park direct for deals and beat the credit crunch.

The park was very organised and very clean. The staff at reception were very friendly and informative. We stayed in a static caravan which was part of the sun promotion, I paid extra for an upgrade. I am glad that I did. The standard caravans do not have CH or double glazed and for some reason they are a lot colder than in a tent (something to do with people: space ratio). On site is the usual club house and restaurants. The food prices were reasonable but drink prices were high. With staying there over the BH the show room was over crowded. The area is excellent with loads to do, It's situated directly on the beech. It's quite rocky in the sea, but has a massive and also clean sandy beach. I recommend Mabie Farm for the children, it was quite cheap and our children loved it. The site is about 20 mins drive from Dumfries, and with only a small shop on site I would recommend stopping off on your way through to get supplies. We had a look around the camping area. There was EHU and a shower / toilet block within easy walking distance. They seems quite relaxed about pitching rules etc. To sum up, I would go camping there in the near future.

Stayed for 3 nights over the Glasgow Sept hol wk'nd in 2008. Good campsite with good facilities, tents are situated just down from the main reception and have ehu. Good facilities for kids as has main entertainment area which is inc in price. This has usual bar/club area but also has a soft play area and a swimming pool. You have to book swimming pool in advance so be warned as only certain amount allowed in at any time! It is very close to the beach which is great if nice weather. Good toilet/shower facilities pretty clean, although the hairdryers didn't work so take your own if you need this! also good dishwashing facilities.
Overall I would recommend this site ideal for families.

Visited over a weekend in October. On check-in we were given a toilet block key. This was pointless as the door locks were all broken. Because we have a large tent it was suggested on booking that we pay for two pitches. Reluctantly I agreed. We discovered on arrival that we were the only tent. The pitches were flat with plenty of space and hookup. The water stand pipe for the camping area had been disconnected so we had to get it fron the dishwashing area
The weekend weather was excellent so we spent all of it outdoors. The beach was about a 10/15 minute walk from the tents and very safe for children.
The entertainment centre is clearly geared up to extract as much money from visitors. There is a dizzying array of fruit machines and gaming consoles with the associated noise. Not our cup of tea. The soft play area was okay but there were no staff to supervise its use and abuse. Some older children were a bit out of control. It was not all that clean either.
At 4.00pm on the Saturday I tried to get a couple of coffees from the coast bar. I queued for ten minutes and when I finally got to the front was told by the barman that he was too busy to serve coffee. If I had wanted alcohol to get drunk then this would have been okay judging by the state of some of the patrons.
The pool area looked good however we did not use it as the weather was excellent.
The toilet block was very poor. There was obviously no maintenance program to repair/replace door locks lightbulbs etc. The dishwashing room had twelve recessed lights. Only two were working.
The onsite shop was alright however there were alot of bare shelves. The essentials were all there but not much else.
I would not return to Southerness under any circumstances. This is a beautiful area of Scotland and there are far better sites than this in the area.

We visited this site on a look -round of the area. True, the facilities were good and more or less as claimed. The toilets were not all that clean and one of the showers had the door hanging off. It was very noisy in the morning and late at night. If that's the kind of site you want , then fine.

We booked up at southerness for a party of three tourers for the weekend. We were a bit wary after reading a couple of the reviews on this site. We arrived late friday night and were dissapointed the reception was closed(7.30). We didnt even have the caravan off the hitch when we were greeted by a warden with an information pack and all our passes. We had our own hook up, our own water and own drainage and the plots were nicely set out. The entertainment on the site was very good and prices very reasonable. Overall for £12 per night this has to be one of the best if not the best site I have been on and cant wait for the next weekend off as we are going straight back to this site. Thank you everyone at southerness

We went to Southerness twice last year and fully enjoyed both visits. Although the loos and showers are in need of update the water was hot every time and there was always plenty of loo roll! The pool organisation needs a complete review. The pool is small and the booking system, at busy times, ineffective. On our 2nd visit we "lucked out" as a family hadn't turned up when we went along to book and so we were given their slot, annoying for others who had waited hours I am sure. The entertainment and the bars are super, all the better for the smoking ban, making all venues family friendly. There is excellent free soft play in the main entertainment centre, conveniently next to a Costa coffee. The Restaurant on site is good value although the service was a little slow, this could be true for the Costa coffee too. As a final thought we went with camping friends on our 2nd visit, and they were washed out, the weather was exceptionally wet, but the pitches obviously no good at coping with some of our British weather. Lastly, the warden in the touring section of the site could not have been more courteous and helpful. Overall, lots of little things which could niggle but a good value fun weekend for families who get on with it!

Visited site for four days before Easter, myself and three children, very nice site. A member of staff even came over to help me put my unit up. The toilets were cleaned at 6.30 - 7.00 every morning by a very efficient man. Swimming was disappointing as pool is only small and limited to 45 mins which you had to book in advance at the bar, slight problem as bar did not open until 10. Entertainment was adequate as it was very early in the season although the bar needed to be better organised as all drinks not available in all bars. Two reasons why I may not go back are 1, young adults in groups wandering around the site until very late, very noisy and intimidating. 2. Our last night was the night before Good Friday and the site seemed to fill up with people who seemed to be out just to get as drunk as possible in the shortest time, very loud

We have just spent our first touring weekend at this site and I just hope that there are better sites out there than this one! Parkdean staff didn't seem to be very organised at all, they had notices up advising to book for swimming when we asked we were told that as it was too busy (Easter weekend) they weren't taking bookings. So we turned up on Sunday morning to be told had to book and had to return at 2pm. Pool was ok. Also there was supposed to be entertainment on for kids - treetops grove. However when we turned up there was no entertainment staff. Evening entertainment on Saturday night they only had entertainment in 1 of the bars (yet it is apparently their busiest weekend of the year!) On Sunday evening advertised kids disco at 6.30pm, yet didn't start till 8pm after the bingo! Our pitch was fine. The toilet/shower in one room was good however the floor was really dirty and when took my 5 yr old daughter for shower was not intending to wash our hair however you don't have that option the spray from the shower isn't the best! Apparently all the showers are the same in both the ladies and the gents. The swing park is for older kids, could do with a swing park suitable for younger kids and in the touring section. Spoke to a few other people who said that this was the worst site they had stayed on so here is hoping for better site next time. The weather was good which was a plus!
