We stayed for 10 nights over the Bank Holiday until 09/06. Positives - Located right on beach (although best bit is at the bottom of the road and to the right of the lighthouse, great rock pools.) Relatively inexpensive, spacious serviced pitches. Indoor play area, although no outdoor play area within view of touring area. Clean shower block. Secluded location. Small staffed indoor Pool. 10mph speed limit. Picturesque places to visit, such as Castle Douglas, Hydro Electric Power Station, and the Aviation Museum. Negatives - 14 miles to nearest town (Dumfries) along A710. Fairly noisy in the morning with vehicles moving around. (As it is a huge site complete with statics) Swimming pool - only 1 hour allowed at a time, which is acceptable when busy, but we were turfed out when it was quiet. Noisy gaming machine area, next to the indoor soft play area. £5 deposit for shower key.

We stayed on the site for 10 nights, from 19th to 29th August. Southerness was a very secluded place, with a good sized beach (some parts very rocky) & free car parking. There were not any real activities going on outside the holiday village, but we would recommend a trip up the old lighthouse, which opens on a Saturday & Sunday, with visitors charged a very reasonable 50p each. There is a chip shop in the resort but the portions are very mean indeed. The gift shop offered a good range of items at reasonable prices. Southerness Holiday Village is very well signposted & easy to find. It took us about a 30 minute drive from Dumfries. After arriving at the site, we met the site warden who was very helpful & showed us to our pitch, which was very good considering the appalling weather conditions. The pitches were all hard-standing, although awnings had to go onto the grass. As there were not many campers in the first few days, our pitch felt quite spacious, but over the bank holiday weekend all this changed as nearly every pitch was full and it felt very claustrophobic! Part of this was due to our new 'neighbour' parking his car within 1ft of our caravan! He had to get out of the passenger side and we couldn't even get to our aqua roll to fill it up! After a word to the warden, he was instructed to move the car over, but it was still very close to our unit. Just like at home, you can't pick your neighbours & this inconsiderate family then proceeded to come back from the Club at midnight & carry on talking in loud voices until around 2am. The touring section requires a £5 deposit in order to have a key to the toilet / shower block (to deter children from messing around). This was a good idea in principle but the kids soon solved this by putting things in the way of the main door to stop it closing. We left our first key in the shower and someone obviously cashed in on this by nabbing our fiver, which resulted in us having to cough up another £5 for another key. The block was the best concept I had seen anywhere, as there was a basin, toilet & shower all together in one cubicle. We thought this was a very good idea and I hope other sites take this option in the future. Getting back to the holiday village, the staff were friendly, the kids club is well organised & highly trained in the latest safeguards concerning child welfare. The entertainment was good, the swimming pool operated 45 minute sessions (to give everyone a fair chance of a swim) although you had to book a session at least 2 hours in advance. Overall a good location & site. It could be more tidy in the Club itself, some of the furniture was a bit smelly & rubbish tended to stay on tables,

We were to have spent a weekend at this site, however after the Friday night we packed up and left. The camping area is on the main road into and out of the site. There may only be 50 statics on this site but there is access to at least another 150 from that road. Traffic runs through day and night. It is also the way to the local pubs. Although the site facilities were deceiving from the web site, it wasn't too bad. The pool is only about 12mtres x 5 mtres but there was 2 lifeguards there. The evening entertainment was good although the fire alarm went off during the children's entertainment and the staff didn't seem to know what to do. It was a good 5 minutes before we were evacuated from the building. When we returned there was no explanation as to why it had happened. Our main problem was the noise levels. We went the last weekend of the Scottish school holidays. The camping area was very busy with people arriving late into the evening. We got back to our tent about 9.30 because the kids where tired. People were putting their tent up next to us so as expected it was noisy. But it got noisier as the night progressed. Not from our neighbours but from the road, people walking from the pubs, gangs of youths and other campers. There was a park warden on site and camp security but they must have a hearing problem because they didn't come out and sort it. The noise went on until way past 2am! If people in the road where I lived behaved like that the police would be there in a flash. The whole experience ruined the weekend as it too the next two days to recover our sleep! We did complain to the Manager once we had packed up our tent a whole 24+ hours earlier but he didn't seem too bothered and didn't offer us a refund.

Just returned having spent a week at this site.It was extremely busy over the Easter weekend with all pitches fully occupied.Very noisy in early hours with barking dogs and people returning from the bar. After the first weekend most people having returned to work the site was a lot more enjoyable. Their is a show on most nights but avoid at busy periods as you may spend up to 20 minutes being served at the bar. A small pool which is manned by lifeguards keeps the kids amused along with a playarea outside the leisure complex which is a couple of minutes walk from touring field. We also noticed lots of broken glass on beach which you can access from the site although a few minutes walk along,it improves with rock pools.
Decent sized pitch some have taps along with electric hookup. Staff very friendly. Laundry was disappointing due to the fact that it costs £1.25 for each drying token which after 3 we gave up trying to dry our clothes as it wasn`t efficient. Dumfries is 14 miles away, the road from there to the site is one long road which passes a couple of very small villages along way. Make sure you have plenty of cash in case the cash machine on site isn`t working as nearest one after the local shop which was also out of order is Dumfries.
All in all we were satisfied with the site, entertainment was ok and all for £108 for the week b ut we would advise to stay clear at the bank holidays as it was very noisy and busy. There are also approx 300 static caravans which was more than we expected. Great views of the surrounding countryside from the site too.

Exceptionally clean site, toilet block, for both sexes offered individual cubicles with shower, toilet and washbasin. These were cleaned 2-3 times per day. Touring/camping pitch had seperate warden. Staff very helpful. Prices in Bar etc reasonable. Entertainment was good whilst we were there, last week in August. Great area for mountain biking, walking and some chill out time. Will definitely be returning.

June 2005 Park Dean has recently taken over this site. Very friendly staff and a well stocked shop. All units are accepted, EHU, water, CDP etc. There are also a lot od owned holiday statics as well as statics to hire. It is adjacent to a beach, which unfortuately whilst we were there had broken bottles etc on it. Not a fault of the site but from the incoming tide. Just down the road at the village of Southerness itself they have a host of volunteers who clean the beach, much better. At the site there is a leisure complex, including a swimming pool and a fun run for the little ones(ball pit). Beware there are gaming machines which could end up costing you a fortune!!!

May 2005 We have just come back after beening here for a week. Great pitches you have your water, drain for waste and hook-up all there. Entertainment, great shop well stocked - that's because nearest town Dumfries about 10 miles and nearest petrol station. Lots of attractions to see. People very nice and helpful. We have 2 teenagers and we did not see much of them - they thought it was great. We had a good holiday too.
