Just came back from a Duke of Edinburgh Award Expedition around Exmoor. I was a safety supervisor for the kids that were walking.
The site is in a lovely location, right alongside a beautiful stream (doesn't seem to flood, rained quite a bit on one day and didn't make any difference to water level)
Owners seemed friendly, came over and had a chat with us.
Facilities were excellent for the secluded location (literally in the middle of nowhere!)
Shower was very warm and clean, and toilets seemed fresh.
Ground was a little bumpy, but didn't cause a problem.
Access to the site is via a very very (over 25%) steep hill. Which is a narrow road. We had trouble with our estate car getting up the hill, as when another vehicle was coming the other way, it was very difficult to get moving again.
Did see a delivery van climb the same hill, but I wouldn't recommend taking anything much bigger than a medium van. This is by no means a criticism to this wonderful site, just a warning for any inexperienced drivers, or anyone with a large motorhome.

Very nice v. Basic campsite in secluded Exmoor valley.
£6 per adult per night. Owner calls round each morning to collect fees.
Fires allowed within 3m of river. Bag of logs (£4) available from owner (tend to be there late afternoon and first thing in the morning)
Ground soggy but still serviceable even though torrential rain for the 36hrs before our visit, and from the middle of the night onwards the day we left.
Many nice walks available direct from campsite. We did a ca. 9 mile circular walk to Dunkery Beacon and back.
Narrow steep single track access roads.

We went at the end of September. The site is located on a narrow road (don't follow satnav postcode!) at the bottom of a hill. The weather was cool but sunny, but unfortunately due to the situation of the site it gets sun only in the morning, and is therefore very cold.
We pitched next to the river, and the roar of the water is very soothing at night. We were camping at the weekend but out of season and the site was more than full enough for my liking (it's small). Certainly would not come in August for this reason, it would just be too crowded, and for us in late September the lack of sun was a major downer on what is otherwise a very pleasant 'wild'-type site.

Nothing appears to be very different to the review of 2008 below.
No bookings. Turn up early and pitch.
Bring midge repellent and/or logs for your campfire. Saw a sign that said the owner sold logs. Campfires must be within 3m of the stream.
Showers seemed to stay nicely hot considering the number of people using them.
If you like very basic camping in a deep valley sheltered from wind, surrounded by mature trees, a bubbling brook, no mobile signal for some distance and a clear view of the milky way this is for you.
Will definitely return.

This camp site, as many have said, is very basic. One male and one female shower for all, a sink outside the showers. No electricity points, no permanent staff, and no other facilities whatsoever. The owners come about twice a day, in the morning to clean the showers, and check who is around, and in the afternoon to check for new cars on the site. You have to catch him to pay for your stay.
However, back to basics is not always a bad thing. This is a very small site, no facilities for caravans / motorhomes, and quite frankly, the small and long road to the site would be quite a challenge for a caravan/motorhome. Probably too narrow.
It can also get quite busy, so arrive early to secure a spot by the stream.
The site is absolutely fantastic. Surrounded by trees, with a lovely stream. They allow open fires if you pitch by the stream, which really adds to that camping feeling. We will certainly be going back soon, although will probably try out some other fire allowing places too, trying to find a place that isn't quite so crowded

Great back to nature site. Lovely having a camp fire, not many sites left for that. Toilets and showers basic but kept clean. My family and I have been three times this year already and always had a good time, even though the last visit was rather a wet one. We still did the lovely walk along the stream to Horner and visited one of it's two cafes. Great food! We have noticed that the camp site is getting better known as it is becoming rather packed, even on a wet weekend out of season. We recommend you get there early to get a good spot, if you want to have a camp fire you have to be alongside the stream and these pitches get snapped up really quickly. There is no play park for kids but ours, two boys, 9 and 12, enjoy getting wet in the stream and playing on the numerous rope swings, bring plenty of spare clothes for the kids! Hope to return next year.

I have been going to this site for the past 12 years and I have noticed it's popularity rise over the years. Unfortunately it is not quite the site it was a few years, back, it has become too busy and if you try and go camping with more than one family you will find it difficult to find a descent pitch all together, it is especially bad in the school holidays The Showering facilities are small, simple but clean. The hot water will run out at busy times, but is replenished an hour or so later (it is gas heated) The walking around this are is fantastic, with Dunkery Beacon within walking distance (around 4-5 miles) where you can enjoy an extensive view across Exmoor This is a small basic site, which takes you back to nature. You just need to be aware that it gets very busy and it does taint the experience

An excellent basic site - no caravans allowed and larger camper vans will find it very difficult as they will get stuck on the way there. A simple shower, one for men and one for women and a sink for washing up. Lots of stars, rain, sun, wind and everything else you would expect on Exmoor. Long, steep, narrow, twisting road our of Porlok. Best bit for us was the quiet, apart from the babbling of the steam and the good, steep, walking and the open fires. These need to be within 3 metres (not 25 as a previous reviewer has said) of the river. The prices - £16 per night for 2 adults and 2 children - are also steep for the basic facilities and quite a hike from last year. We like basic, its a shame to have to pay etc. For it. The prices had not though deterred people and it got pretty packed at the weekend, especially with an additional 40 or so Duke of Ed. Teenagers. Good if you like it rough - advice - arrive out of season and bring supplies as the drive into town for bread and milk is best not done too often.

This site is difficult to reach with a big camper - narrow roads and very sharp corners. I have used this site for over 20 years but I now find it hard work. Steep hills to climb on all but one walk and that one is the best 3 miles through Horner wood and tea and cakes when you get to the village
This is one of the most beautiful basic camp site in the Southwest. But it is very popular with the locals for weekend back to basic camping. The site is about 3 miles inland from the Town of Porlock and his at the head of Horner wood. There is a small trout stream that runs all way through the site, and the walks a really fantastic in any direction. Red and row dear are all around the site and are often seen in the site by early riser.
You may have a camp fire within 25m of the river but the owner does not worry where it is as long as you are sensible. You can buy logs when the owner comes to collect your money or glean them from the woods all around you. The last I heard the price was £6 a night for two but could have changed.
There is no electricity on the site the water and toilets are heated by Gas and are cleaned daily. At night you must take your own light. You can not book and it gets very busy in the school holidays. Best to arrive on Tuesday when all the weekenders have departed.I f the site is full when you arrive you are only 6 miles from Westermill in Exford that allows fires in the last field and about 8 miles from the two sites in Doone valley that also allow fires.

Have visited this site many times with a group of friends and children. We love it, despite the rain (it's known as 'Pourlots' by our gang!) The kids love the freedom - climbing up the hillside in search of wood for the fire and messing about in the stream. We love the peace.
