The first point is that this is a site with real potential - great views, lots of space and a great location.

We turned up here one Saturday morning on the recommendation of a very popular site that doesn't allow booking and was full. They were more than happy to recommend Sunset View - mentioning that it was a very new site and therefore only had basic facilities.

On arrival, we were greeted by a friendly lady who was more than happy to accept us - she pointed out the meagre facilities - but was keen to say that, if we needed more help, just knock on the door. I didn't catch the names but the gentleman I spoke to told us all about his plans for the place - there's a lot of promise in the collection of farm buildings.

Lots of space for the two of us to roam about and for our toddler to run in (donkeys, horses and a friendly farm dog were a bonus for her).

No pot washing facility, the toilets were basic and the shower did have queues (but, for us on a one night getaway, not a problem). When you are queuing though, there are worse ways to do it than sat in the courtyard, having a chat.

I'm sorry I didn't notice they accepted open fires until the following morning when we, noticed that a couple of other groups had had them - that's a rare gem these days (and one I hope the owners can accommodate in the future, there's certainly the space.

We had lots of room to throw a frisbee about. This site has a very free feel to it (no pitch markers, no lights out rules - camping the way I remember it as a kid.

Yes it could benefit from toilet blocks - preferably a few so that people don't have to drive up from the lower fields (it's a long walk). It's not a perfect site yet, but it's on it's way - gotta start somewhere right.

My advice if you go this year - be prepared for basic, take it in your stride and watch this site take shape. For those with kids - we took our two year old - she loved it. We'll be going back again to see how they get on. Price wise - I'd guess at one of the cheapest in the area at £10 for two adults and a toddler in a small pop up.

Local area - Robin Hoods Bay, Whitby and Scarborough in easy reach. It seemed very close to the Whitby / Robin Hoods Bay cycle hire place. If you like to walk, I spotted a way marker leading off the site from on of the lower fields towards Whitby.

We arrived at the site on Friday 23rd July just after 7pm.

We went and seen the owner and after paying where told which field to pitch in.

A short drive to the field and we where left to do our own thing, we where able to choose exactly where we wanted to pitch which was brilliant!

The owner came round soon after to make sure our tent was up and everything was ok. Must say the owner was very friendly and welcoming.

The views - wow what can I say?! They where amazing and the sunset is some what breath taking. Really good.

At the moment there are two portable loos on site and one proper toilet which where always clean when we needed to use them. There is also one shower on site. I do believe from speaking to the owner however he is going to be building a new shower and toilet block on each field.

The best thing about this site was there was no noise restriction in place which is very hard to find these days. However one word of advise is do not let this put you off as there is a noisy field and a quiet field and people do get to choose which field they want to pitch in.

We would come back.

Spent a week on the camp site. Views are spectacular, never bored with waking up to the scenery. Lots of great walks on hand, to Robin Hoods Bay (45 mins), Whitby (2 hrs), And lots more in the area.

The site itself is very friendly and the owner Rob and his dog Blue are always on hand to help with any request or questions. Great pub 20 mins walk good food.

The site has a spare well equipped chalet with on suite for all to use, and another toilet and tap for visitors. Being able to have a camp fire just makes all the difference to the camping experience. In all, to sum up.

Definably the best site for miles in that area. The onus on the individual to be responsible enough to make the holiday fun for all is refreshing. Very very good site.

We were supposed to be staying for two nights here from 16th to 17th July, but couldn't make it to the first night so ended up only staying one night - and I'm glad!

Dont get me wrong, its perfect if you want views (from this site - gorgeous) and just a field to pitch in with your mates and have a party all night - then go here! For £5 per person you cant go wrong. Its great.

However, I was very disappointed in the shower and toilet facilities, they look like they have never been cleaned from erection! Gross. There was no toilet paper at about 5pm when I went up there, thankfully took my own. Its not somewhere id take my family and children, no way. Its great for young groups though. You can have camp fires, the owner doesn't mind this.

Speaking of the owner, we never saw him to talk to, I saw him at his farm house door once, and didn't even smile : ( A friend went up to pay him all of our fees at once, then 5 mins later, he came to our tents in his land rover, asking for us to pay! She reminded him that she'd just paid him not 5 mins since - very odd.

There are two portaloos on one field that I saw, but didn't use (with a pile of rubbish at the side of them which stank) and there is an outside toilet outside the farm house (which is, by the way, rather scruffy looking as someone else has mentioned), and a, what looks like a holiday flat comprising of a bedroom and an en suite which the owner lets people use for the shower facility as it doesn't look in use as a holiday flat. The 'holiday' flat was filthy, the farmers cats used the bed to sleep on, but were very friendly! There is also a gorgeous little staffy, which looks mean (!) but is sooo soft, and came to sit around my leg whilst I stroked her : )

Im sorry, but I wouldn't go back here, or recommend it to anyone with a family, maybe to a young group.

Really basic, quiet and robusk site.

We went in a big group and were left to pitch where we wanted and do our own thing which was perfect for us.

Facilities are very basic with 4 portable loos at the top of the field but there is use of a shower room and 'proper' toilet, all which were clean and never ran out of toilet roll.

Great area if you like to walk its around 3 miles to Robin hoods bay and is a lovely scenic walk.

There's plenty of space for games and with sensible pitching no one will be bothered about the noise. There is no site entertainment so be prepared to make your own.

We enjoyed our stay and would go back.

This camp site really ' brings home' the meaning of camping. Forget about electric hookups for your kettle or to power the blow air heating.

This is as basic as it comes, but is probably one of the best camping trips we have had in a long time. It had been so long since I had been on a site that had no noise restrictions after 9pm and didn't mind you making a camp fire, sitting around it and having a sociable drink talking until the early hours.

The site is made up of about 3 different fields all adjoined by the farmhouse. There is ample room so no need to worry about not getting a space. Also there is enough room to accommodate families and groups without being too close to disturb each other. The owner was very friendly and more than willing to lend a hand if you are stuck.

I will definitely be considering this site again, given how close it is to Whitby, £5 per night is a bargain if your prepared to rough it a bit. But isn't that what camping is all about

We visited this site at the beginning of May. Simply wanted to taste fish and chips from Whitby so we planned a short break away. There are two large fields that sit at the top of a hill on a farm with spectacular views of Whitby and Yorkshire. Sea views, the abbey, hills, etc. It's called sunset view, and it didn't disappoint. We got a wonderful sunset. There was no light pollution and my young son and my partner had a wonderful evening star gazing whilst sat round a campfire telling stories whilst heating marshmallows. For me it was the perfect site and atmosphere (and I was not overly keen on this camping malarky either).

This site is for those wanting to go back to basics. Though the site is currently undergoing some improvements such as toilet/shower block which looks to be a huge complex. There was one toilet and it was based up at the farm. However, some people may be disgruntled that the only place to wash pots was in the sink in this outdoor toilet. We had a bowl with us. Simple really. Also, the tap in the field was not working, so the only water tap was next to the sink in the outside loo. And I had to sit and wait a while whilst someone washed their pots when I needed to pee! (note to self- bucket) but, as I said earlier, huge block in the making.

The field was uneven in parts, but, there where some parts which where flat, it didn't take us long to find a place to pitch. The owners where more than helpful, our car even broke down on the field, and they assisted us every way they could to get the car running again. Priceless!

Very friendly run site.

If you are after electric hook up and all the mod cons then this campsite is not for you. This camp site has so much potential to be so much more, but personally I think it is perfect the way it is.We loved it, and we plan to return.

We just saw the sign outside a farm with a mobile number and rang it. Friendly chap answered phone said there were spaces and would meet us outside.

First impressions. Farmyard and a bit scruffy. Owner. Didn't catch his name (although upon reading other reviews would assume its Rob) was very friendly. He gave a very quick overview of the facilities. Just pointing around the areas.

Back to basics! One indoor toilet that we found that also had a drinking water tap in there. Four portaloos. Although one was not flushing. He said there was a shower, but we never found it, but to be honest wasn't all that bothered. There is an outdoor water tap. On a gate post. Which we found on our second day in the day light.

Huge huge open fields to park your tent on, didn't see any electric hook ups. Be warned guys. If you pitch your tent right at the bottom of the field. Be ready for one hell of a trek back up to the portaloos. It doesn't seem as far when you're driving down to your pitch in the car. But the walk back up. When you're desperate for the loo. Well. You get my drift.

The view is fantastic. You can see the sea and whitby abbey.Just gorgeous.

If you don't mind getting back to basics. Which we don't. Then you will be fine with this campsite. Don't come here if you're expecting an all singing and dancing campsite.

For the two of us. 3 nights. Cost £30.

Stayed at Sunset view for 3 nights at Easter this year, booked in at short notice following a cancellation in the lake district due to the weather.

The site is very basic to say the least, with only a total of 2 toilets (1 being very basic ) and 1 shower, these being unisex. This did not cause a problem on our visit but if the site was busy then queues could be a problem.

There are also no washing up facilities unless you take up the site owners offer of knocking on his door to use his kitchen! The owner did his best to convince us that major improvements were going to take place over this season so we wait in expectation.

This is a site where you have to put some effort in to make your stay enjoyable. The site is on open fields, with plenty of space, which have a fantastic view of Whitby and its surrounding coastline. This is the best feature of this site. Whitby and Robin hoods bay are both within walking distance and the nearest pub at High Hawsker serves a good selection of food.

Prices were £15 per night for a 5 person tent which having regard to the facilities seemed a bit pricey. We would use it again but hope the facilities have improved

Positives: cheap, no booking, very laid back, you are allowed camp fires, no restrictions on noise.

Negatives: portable toilets that were very dirty! One shower for the whole campsite that wasn't very clean. Very long grass in the field which made it hard to pitch tent.

Although cheap and handy with no booking, would not want to go back. There are other campsites in Whitby that don't charge much too!
