We decided at the last minute to get away for the August Bank Holiday and we had not booked and headed for Whitby with a few Camp Site phone numbers we had taken from the website.
We rang the number of the Sunset View Camp and were politely greeted by a young lady who said yes, no problem to a pitch on the camp site! We were greeted on the site by the owner Rob (very friendly and down-to-earth) and due to the winds, he escorted us to a position in the fields where it was a little more sheltered.
On this site, you were spoilt for choice as to where to pitch your tent - there is space for hundreds of tents, I think there were about 5 areas (fields) all in all. Kids were playing football, cricket and even rugby without bothering fellow campers
The fields were clean and I think many of the campers found the use of the freshly cut hay bales very useful for using as wind breaks - I know we did!
VIEWS - If you like panoramic views - you won't get better than this site or you will find it hard to beat. The view of Whitby is superb, looking at the Abbey and the Sea behind, stretching all the way down the coast. The view is just as good in the evening - sat outside with a tinny or too, looking at Whitby lit up.
FACILITIES - People moaned - people will always moan - we booked into this site late on a Bank Holiday without a reservation - we pitched our tent and enjoyed a long weekend of camping and sight seeing. Many others arrived after us - (obviously like us, hadn't booked) - I was grateful of the friendly reception and the fact that I was sleeping in my tent that night and not my pick-up.
Rob the owner has a great site here, yes, toilets were limited, two inside toilets and a portaloo (This portaloo was no different to other campsite portaloos)! The two other loos were ok, one was on the end of a 'stable block' and ok, the other is in the only shower room in a very nicely converted stable block, which was very clean. The shower was ok when it was working ok. Running hot and cold but I am assured this will be sorted in th efuture. I must say that we stayed an extra day and the shower was fine - due to the water pressure being ok because the toilets were not constantly being flushed!
On chatting to Rob, the owner, he has said he intends to get shower blocks and toilet facilities in each of the fields and have it all sorted for the new season next year - I'm sure he will. There was already ongoing work on a new shower block so its started.
There is no shop, etc, on the site (may change) but all things are within car/bike distances - few miles and the camp site just further down the hill has facilities - they have a pub on theres! And you can use it.
Other things on the site were yes, as somebody also mentioned in a review, the rubbish colection area was a bit haphazard and a big pile but I would also say that due to the amount of campers that turned up on this site on the Bank Hol weekend I don't even know if a large skip would have been enough for it all.
Footnote: With regards the rubbish - all you fellow campers - we stayed an extra day after most of the 'crowd' had vacated the site, some of you left your patches in 'crap' state, with rubbish, throwaway barbies, etc, just strewn around. Play the game, Rob and his wife were coming round picking the rubbish up - leave the area as you found it - that's the way we play it.
In my Ratings I have marked average - this doesnt reflect anything as they are due to change foir the better.
Had enjoyable stay on this campsite Rob, good luck to you and your family, we will come back - would like to see how you progress - good site in the making matey. The views as I say are stunning and Whitby is lovely, whoever reads this, make sure you visit Robin Hoods Bay - so much history - visit the little book shop on the hill, get a little tour map for a quid and visit the museum.
Great weekend

We have just returned from a 2 night stay at the whitby sunset view. The views are amazing and there is plenty of space in the two massive camping fields. We had warm welcome from the lady owner who showed us around and allowed us to choose where we pitched our tent. This is a new campsite and not all the facilities are up and running yet but they hope to be complete in time for 2010 summer. There is only one shower, but its brand new and two people could easily fit in at once. There are three toilets (one of which was a portaloo on the camping field, but as with most mobile toilets it was pretty awful)no washing up facilities yet and only one cold tap. The site is 4 miles from whitby so you really need a car and the nearest pub is about 1 and 1/2 miles away, lovely food by the way at the hare and hounds.
No electric hook ups yet, but we were told they are planned for next year, together with more toilets, showers and washing up facilities.
I wasn't impressed with the rubbish facilities but when we mentioned it to the owner she provided a bin on the field the next day.
Small tents £10, medium tents £15 and large £20 they do not charge per person and dogs are free. This was good value in our opinion and we will return again.
Theres lots of space for young ones to run around but no dedicated play area.
If you want a get away it all type of camping trip with great views and a fab sunset every night this campsite is for you

Hi we had a lovely stay once again thank you. There's a lovely pub down the road which is dog and child friendly. Then we caught the bus into Whitby, and had a very lovely time on the beach and that cafe you told us to go to. We will definitely be returning again next year and we will be looking forward to what you have next year

We enjoyed our camping trip, the views are amazing - but be warned only one toilet, one shower and one water tap for the entire site!
When we were there (August Bank Holiday), there had to be over 100 campers so you can imagine it wasn’t ideal! The rubbish disposal was a bit scary too (a big bonfire).
Our kids did enjoy all the open spaces on the site (tents were spread over 4 or 5 fields) - and all the bales of hay everywhere were great for them to climb on. But the toilet situation was a nightmare (just glad we had a bucket in the car!)
I really hope that the owners do invest in the site as it is a lovely location!
We were charged £20 per night for our family tent (we are a family of 4). Our friend was charged £10 for their smaller tent.
