We visited the site at the end of august. On arrival we found the pitch, bit of a squeeze for our camper van and awning but we managed it with a bit to spare. The we began to peg out the awning and we couldn't get the pegs in. After bending almost all of the various pegs we had we decided to call the reception for help. One of the staff came up with big mallet and a selection of pegs, 6 in fact. We needed more and a friendly neighbour came to our rescue with 11 more. During our stay we went to several towns looking for rock pegs and couldn't find any so if you visit this site come prepared, they are availabe through uk campsites.
Other than that our stay was ok.The toilets and showers were always clean and no queues, loads of hot water too, the weather wasn't good but dry some of the time. We didn't get to the local beaches. We tried some of the walks from the site they were ok but easy to get lost on the many adjoining paths.

Here for a weekend only, so we didn't test the laundry, showers etc. Have dog, no children.
Good points -
- located in a very beautiful part of Scotland;
- fabulous views from higher parts of the site.
- Pitches tucked into the hillside on terraces so that topography and trees / bushes give good visual separation . And you're not aware of just how many statics there are.
- Soap dispensers at each sink.
- Shop with interesting / varied choice of deli-type food - upgraded since the local shop closed.
- efficient telephone check-in, friendly warden.
- Kippford is a short walk away, glorious at sunset if the tide is out (Anchor Inn - real ale, fires, dogs allowed.)
- quirky, cheap, interesting, fun wee 9-hole par 3 golf course on the other side of the road. You can hire clubs and/or eat lunch here too.
- lots to do in the area - Food Town at Castle Douglas, Artists Town at Kirkcudbright, forest walks, coastal walks, 7Stanes mountain biking, castles, abbeys, beaches, gardens, lots of local artists and crafts e.G. The pottery by the site.
Bad points -
- expensive, despite the 15% discount for CCC members.
- touring section of the site is the area beside the main road and the road to Kippford, so it can be noisy at times.
- it is a very big site that you can get lost in, beside another very big static site. If you want small and quiet with views from your door, and you don't need many facilities, go elsewhere e.G. Nearby Rockcliffe, or Ross Bay by Kirkcudbright.
- Grass pitches got waterlogged and muddy (we were parked on the tarmac road, luckily, but by the gate with everyone walking by).
- Designated dog walk in the woods is a fair distance, and very steeply uphill, and you need the site map to navigate the maze of site roads to find the gate as there are no directional signs. So most folk walked past our motorhome to 'exercise' their dogs on the road verge.
- No dog poo bins by the dog walks entrances - some owners didn't pick up or 'flick away' after their dogs so the woodland path was fouled. As a dog owner myself, this really irritates me.
- I didn't like squashing our rubbish bag onto dog poo bags in the rubbish bins, but the bins were full to over-flowing on Sunday morning.
- you have to leave by 11.00 am rather than midday or even 1.00 pm.
- the David Bellamy Award is much heralded, but I couldn't see why they'd got it. Why not have recycling by the rubbish bins like other sites? I suspect most folk (like us) didn't bother to go looking for the right place to put the stuff.

This campsite is very much for caravans and does not cater as well for tents.
We stayed there after reading many positive reviews and carefully studying the site's own web page.
Pitches were rocky, uneven and too small for the tent - pitches are based on tent dimensions but give no additional space for guy-ropes or walking round/sitting by your tent.
Our pitch was on a hill beside the staff toilet block next to a steep, rocky, muddy hill and the staff refused to move us even though we were visiting with our son who had just had his 2nd birthday. It was very dangerous.
We were encouraged to use the staff toilets which were cold and dirty and were certainly not cleaned during the 3 nights that we stayed. The shower block was clean and warm but the shower facilities were terrible for such a large and well respected site. There were only 2 showers, both with water pressure so low that that the spray was barely more than a trickle - it has hot though. There were plenty of clean toilets.
On leaving the site the staff asked if we had enjoyed our stay to which I replied no and explained the issues we had had. They barely even acknowledged that I had spoken and certainly did not offer any kind of apology.
That said, the location was nice
I'm sure that caravaners rate this site highly but I would not recommend it to anyone wishing to camp in the area and certainly not with small children.

Just returned from a week at this site chosen following the favourable reviews on this site & have to say we were very disappointed
Staff - surly,miserable & unhelpful
Pitch - small , rockhard, pebbly & alongside busy road
Facilities-too few water / waste points- very poorly marked, trek to get to & not clearly labelled so confusing which were drinking water ( one of the Wardens even asked me which was the drinking water ! ) One water point down steep muddy slope
EHU did not have breakers fitted so not sure what you had to do if they tripped out as not clear what maximum wattage was.
Toilet Blocks - 2 on site - 1 new & 1 old although older one was probably the nicer one to use as the new block had 3 individual toilet / shower units ( one disabled friendly ) with frosted windows - however anyone sat on loo clearly obvious as shower curtain did not stretch across the windows.
Also as the door had to be opened with a key ( £5 deposit ) you had to remember to leave key in lock as door could be opened from outside with possible embarrasing consequences
Shower hot but without shower tray so after use all of floor became very wet & slippy. Also floor generally covered with mud & grass so advise wearing crocs when showering
Older toilet block had individual loos (x3) & 1x shower with seating area / clothes hooks & shower tray below floor level - far more pleasant to use
Playground -more for older kids & not under 5's and became a hanging out point for them late evening with lots of bad language & attitude
Laundry - 2 washers & 2 dryers , £2 per cycle for bothwith goodwashbut as situated alongside Playground was closed early @ 6.30PM instead of advertised 9PM to keep older kids out from wrecking the place - resulting in washing being marooned in the dryer overnight - not very good when you've run out of shirts !
Shop small with not much there ( mainly papers ) & only open for 3 hours morning & afternoon
Nice walk to Kippford with two good pubs ( good food & great views ) & nice beach . Pleasant walk over to Rockcliffe ( next village along ) which had an interesting pebbly beach
Great beach @ Sandyhills - tide comes in impressively quick & leaves about 1 hr later ! & also a Caravan park which looked very pleasant
Kippford site obviously putting more emphasis on Lodges judging by amount of new plots being built higher up the site
We passed many other sites nearby which looked better & more friendly towards tourers– will give some of them a try next year
Finally
Would I go again – probably not !
Would I recommend it – absolutely not !

Just returned from 3 night break after easter all I can say is this site is excellent! Clean, great location, excellent facilites, pitches excellent varying sizes depending on the size of your caravan. Staff very friendly and helpful. Beautiful village, great golf course 2 great pubs with good food overlooking harbour. Not so good for teenage or older children if they like arcades etc. If you are looking for a great setting, great facilities this is the place to go. But please dont tell too many people as we will be going back again and again!

Just come back from 10 days at this site would highly recommend this site. The staff are very helpful and very pleasant, also the amenities are very good. My only concern is with the size of some of the pitches they can be a bit on the small side if you have a large tent ours is a montanna 6. Would recommend you try and get an ehu made all the difference being able to put on heater at night when it went cold. If you have children would recommend you try Mabie farm it is a great day out and plenty to keep the children happy for hours. Also if you like your golf there is a good course just by the camp site, you can hire golf clubs for £20 deposit+£5 to hire it is only a 9 hole golf course and it costs £7 for a round.

I think past reviews do not do this caravan site justice and thats why I submitted one right away!. We have just returned from a week in our tourer with two young children. It is an utterly beautiful site and the toilet / shower blocks must have been recently upgraded as they are immaculate. The nearby beach at Sandyhills was a real gem and I also loved Rockcliffe beach too (just as close). Our pitch was individual with a lovely space. The beautifully kept static caravans and holiday homes nestled in amongst trees and further up the hillside add to the charm as it nice to wander round looking at them as they make the site look so lovely as well.

We have stayed here every year for the past 5 years - no plans to go this year though. We love the location (near beach, forest walks, castles to visit) there's certainly enough to do to keep our family busy for several days, but I felt last year there were more pitches squeezed into the same space at the site! The park is clean & well maintained, but the toilets/showers could do with being upgraded. A few improvements and a bit more space and we'd go back again.

We have been spending our holidays at Kippford for the past 15 years, but over the past few years the standards have dropped. In particular the pitches have become smaller with more vans crammed into the same area. When creating the so called "super-pitch" the hard standing" is more akin to a small quarry leaving our groundsheet in tatters & many bent tent pegs. The facilities on site have not kept pace with the volume of pitches, there is only 1 male & 1 female toilet block with 2 showers in each for the use of all the tourers & tents. Being disabled I am not aware of any facilities to cater for the likes of myself.

July 2005 Not a site I would stay at again. pitches not big enough for larger tents, the ground is very hard and rocky, came home lots of bent tent pegs. Shower and toilet blocks very inadequate, 2 ladies showers and 1 gents for the entire site. Washing up facilities hopeless too the water was tepid bordering on cold. Our end of the site was not lit at all at night making trips to the toilet very hazourdous over very uneven rocky ground. their website is also very misleading. we expected to pay £14 per night for a standard pitch but ended up paying £18, they have a hidden charge of £1 per person per night for extra people. This is not stated anywhere on their website.
