Although I agree with most of the other reviews for this site I would like to add that it is in fact 2 sites, one being the CC club, so although it is in a peaceful tranquil area there is a lot of comings and goings of campers cars/vans etc. Because there is only one way in and out and that runs right through the CC site. So the Millacre site campers (11 pitches when full) have to drive/walk past you when coming and going. I also noticed that on several occasions that although there are separate toilets and showers on each site, that when the Millacre one was busy (and with 11 pitches occupied was very often) the campers from there came and used the CC facilities making them out of bounds quite often!
As for the 'sheds' that house the shared male/female toilet and shower, I found that although these were surface clean when I began cleaning the shower after I used it it was in fact grimy around the edges and under the shower mat. Owner's comment: The Showers and Toilets are given the main clean late evening (Dusk) just before bed time, and only given a quick 5 minute check in the morning in the middle of the busy time. If there was slime under the shower mat, it was because of the person that used it before her. Unfortunately I can-not be there to clean up after each individual user.
As with the other reviews I found it very unusual not to be met by the owners and to post our money in a box on site. They also mowed the grass from 6pm till 8pm which I found a bit disturbing. Owner's comment: The Grass is normally mowed late morning if it is dry enough, and only in extreme circumstances mowed late in the day, during a dry slot if the weather has been wet for a long period of time. The payment system has been in operation since 1997 when we opened the site. It is a unique idea which saves the client wasted time looking for an office and allows them to get onto their pitch as soon as they arrive.
Summing up this site I would agree that it is in a tranquil setting, but I personally would have liked a more personal touch and think the toilets and showers need updating!

As others have mentioned, this is a lovely, tranquil site. The access road from the M6 was very good and yet the road leading the last few yards to the site was very quiet, so there was no problem with road noise.
The pitches were of good size; we were able to pitch caravan awning and car on the space provided. The pitches were well defined with little hedges.
The postal payment system was a bit weird. Other people have mentioned the personal qualities of the owners, but my wife and I found that because of this 'remote' system you might never meet the owners, or know who they were! We did, but only because one day we spent more time actually on the site and saw them emptying bins etc. And we recognised their photograph from one of the notice boards.
The walk along the quiet road to Hesket Newmarket was pleasant and the Old Crown pub there had very reasonably priced cask ales from its own brewery round the back.
We managed to see some red squirrels, which was one of the highlights of the holiday for me. The first one we saw was at Mungrisdale and was due to a very kind lady guessing that we were on the lookout for some and inviting us into her garden, where one was feeding from a feeder!
A friendly fellow camper had mentioned Mungrisdale as a good place to see them (it also has a nice pub) and then when we got back to the site, we saw one also at one of the feeders. There are a number of feeders dotted around the site, both for birds and squirrels.
The site could perhaps have done with an extra toilet and shower, but a light went on outside when each was being used, so at least you could look before venturing over!
The only other negative thing to say was the owners' policy of insisting that we pay for the Friday night of the bank holiday weekend, even though we were trying to book Sat to Sat. What made it worse was that having made a fuss about being full for all three nights of the bank holiday weekend we arrived on the Friday night to find a number of empty pitches!
The site was handy for Carlisle in one direction and Penrith in the other, which is where one's main shopping would be done. There was a lovely food hall, Cranstons, selling local produce, which was just off J40 on the A592 on the way in to Penrith and is well worth a visit. I don't remember any info about it at the campsite.
The site is well positioned for the more northerly fells, but others would require longer drives, but nothing too taxing.
It was very pleasant to able to sit at one of the picnic tables near the river and listen to the gently running water.
All in all, this was a brilliant site and very good value for money. We've stayed at another adults only site in the Lake District which also didn't have dishwashing facilities and neither did it have as much space on each pitch and yet charged about 5 or 6 pounds more per night! So well done, Riverside. If we're back in the area we'll certainly come here again.

What a find. Once you get over the toilet 'huts' this site is a gem. It is well looked after, very clean and although there are only 2 toilets and 2 showers they were warm enough on a very cold weekend.
As previous reviews state it isn't that far away from the main lakes areas and within easy driving distance. The walk along the quiet road to Hesketh Newmarket was easy and we saw a deer. Will definitely return and will not use the bigger sites now we've found this.

You feel like you are miles from anywhere on this site, but within easy reach of Penrith, Carlisle, the lakes & the coast. Very quiet relaxed site. Toilets & showers always clean, good water pressure with a real shower (no push button) & you control the temperature.
No washing up facilities & dog walk not much, but there is a public footpath right outside the site.
The Old Crown at Hesket & the Oddfellows at Caldbeck both do good food & are not overly priced.

What a find! Just returned from a weekend at this fantastic clean peaceful site really tranquil. Whilst having breakfast we spotted 3 deer in the field opposite and did manage to see the squirrels. Toilets really warm on a very cold weekend. Some lovely walks in the area. Can't wait to come back again and sit by the river with a nice glass of wine thanks

We have just returned from a wonderful long weekend and the site is as great as ever. The quirky toilet and shower huts are always very warm and clean.
We enjoyed our walk to the pub in Hesket Newmarket and sampled their wonderful own brewed beer.
We have no children so really enjoy the adults only sites.
We have only been home for a few hours and have been on phone already and booked another long weekend in August.

Due to recent heavy snow John the site owner met us and then towed our caravan the last 2 miles, that's what you call service! We then stayed for 12 nights, just didn't want to leave!
A truly beautiful cared for site made even more beautiful with the snow that fell throughout our stay. Very peaceful as adult only site which made they stay even better. Great loos and showers which were still working despite temperatures reaching -18c!
A great base for visiting the Lakes, even in winter as it is quite close to the M6. The Old Crown in Hesket Newmarket 2 miles away is worth a visit, great beer and food. You will be hard pushed to find a site as good as this for £13.00 per night! We look forward to returning!

Stayed at this site for a week at end of August, the first thing that I noticed was the number of notices around the site. We were staying on the non CL part of the site.
The small river running adjacent to the site is beautiful, and being a keen fisherman was quick to give it a go, it contains large numbers of very small wild brown trout, 4 - 6 inches, but during the week I did manage one of a pound and one threequarters of a pound, delicious!
The site is convenient for the lakes and the countryside is beautiful in this area, our favourite was a visit to Keswick and Borrowdale.
I did manage to see the Red Squirrels on one occasion whilst fishing, but unfortunately had just taken my camera from my fishing bag!
The toilets and showers are kept very clean and tidy in the individual huts, however, if someone filled their water barrel whilst you were showering, the electric shower tripped on low pressure and went cold.It was pleasing to see a good recycling policy is in use.
We had a quite a lot of rain whilst there, and towards the back end of the week had standing water in the awning, probably due to the fact we were pitched at the bottom of the slope.

Last minute decision to make the most of good weather for a weekend break around Keswick, this site was the third site on our route for just turn up without even phone up to book, lots people must be doing the same because first two sites were full, we are so glad as it happened. It's not easy to find no wonder still got pitches free, for £12 a night with all the facilities needed (no dish wash area), can't help but stay longer than needed in the toilet because it almost like an information centre with books, local information etc. in it It's quiet but we like it, watching red squirrel running 10 ft from us, it's best CL site we’ve been, the owner took pride of it. Will definitely return.

Spent 5 nights at Riverside and the peace and quiet was absolutely fantastic. The wildlife on site is quite something if you enjoy this sort of thing. The toilet and shower facilities are very good even if they look like garden sheds don't let this put off they are very clean and the showers water was always nice and hot. Being adults only for us was a great bonus not that we have anything against children (we have 8 grand children)but it just added to the peace. There are no shops in the village but if you drive to the next one you will find essentials there. One tiny criticism is that if you are a mobile phone fiend the signal is either none existent or quite poor unless you can find a hotspot. Would we return, the answer has to be an emphatic YES
