My fiancée and I had searched long and hard for a campsite close to the beach that wasn't in Cornwall and stumbled across Lleithyr Farm in a Pembrokeshire Tourist's guide. Having read the positive reviews on here, we decided to go for a week, and we were not disappointed.
The weather was extremely changeable when we went, so it's something you have to come prepared for - I would absolutely recommend using a tent that has separate sleeping compartments so that there is somewhere for soggy shoes and clothes to go! We had several nights and mornings of heavy rain, but this did not deter from our having a brilliant time. The evenings were sunny so we spent a fair bit of time on the beach, which is a short walk away. It does involve going down a reasonably steep road, but it's not at all strenuous, and if driving seems an easier option there is a fair-sized car park which is free in the evening.
There are a few things to do locally if the weather turns miserable, though realistically speaking this probably couldn't stretch you out long enough to keep you occupied for any longer than a week. During the rainier days we visited the quirky shops in St Davids and Solva and drove to local woollen mills and art galleries. There is a take-away not far away held at the local rugby club should you be unable to cook, and we would highly recommend going to The Grove in St David's, the food is divine and it's somewhere just to sit and have a coffee until the rain eases off. To give the campsite its due, at one point we had near constant rain for 12 or more hours, but the grass did not get overly waterlogged and not at all muddy. There is a small gravel path leading part-way into the camping area which I believe was regravelled to prevent it from getting too sludgy, so walking to and from the shower block wasn't nearly as bad as it could easily have been.
During a nicer day we went to Oakwood Theme Park, which is about a 40 minute drive away, and closeby is Blue Lagoon adventure swimming pool, which although we didn't go to, is another option for if it's wet.
In terms of other activities, there are plenty of adventure-type things to do, from bike-hire to coasteering. My one bit of advice would be look into this side of things as much as possible if you think you're interested, as I had no idea what was on offer until I naively turned up at the tourist information centre! We did a Ramsay Island boat trip, there are loads of companies which offer this, but we went with Voyages of Discovery, and had a fantastic time. It's good fun, and a nice combination of learning about the island but also chilling out and enjoying the ride, and saw porpoises, seals and various species of bird.
For those less adventurous, there are also several shuttles which do bus trips from coast to coast - I didn't do this but it seems a popular option for those who perhaps don't want to use their cars too much.
The campsite has a very nice feel to it, and during our stay everyone on the campsite was very respectful of one another, and there is a ban on amplified music or noise after ten. The camping plot is separate from the caravan site, which is nice, and although not strictly divided up into plots, electric hook-ups surround the outer edge, and there is a row of plants and newly planted trees to provide more wind shelter and pitch divisions. There is also a great view from the site, as you sit slightly below rising fields and a mountain of volcanic rock (which you can walk up as it links up from the coastal path).
Can't comment too much on child friendliness as we went as a couple. There is no playground or pool, so entertainment isn't provided per se, but it's a family-friendly site and there were several families there during our stay, playing cricket, frisbee etc.
The toilets were extremely clean and tidy, and in close proxmity to wherever you pitch, with two toilet and two shower cubicles (in the mens). In spite of it being high season, I didn't have to queue for a shower, and in case it gets busy there is another (larger) toilet block just over the road. There is also a disabled and family toilet. Showers charge 20p for 4 minutes.
The shop is idyllic, AMAZING pastries for breakfast and a wide range of food, gifts and camping equipment! They also collect and dispose of your used gas cannisters. Very friendly people run the place and it gives it a relaxed and safe atmosphere, with chickens and a super-friendly labrador roaming around.
Overall, great value, and a brilliant campsite. If you had a week of sunshine, it could not in any way be faulted! Just be wary that if it does rain, you consider your back-ups and have a suitable tent.

I just returned from a 3 night stay, where they managed to find me a pitch with hook-up at the very last minute. A real nicely situated site on a flat field with tremendous mountain and countryside views. It was a short and pleasant 20 minute walk to St.David's Cathedral (the main reason for my visit). The shop was really well stocked with an excellent range of products. The staff were particularly friendly and helpful, especially Gethin.
I will definitely return to this site again - highly recommended!

The toilet block was cleaned on the Saturday afternoon not long after we arrived but I couldn't see that it had been cleaned after that, by the Wednesday evening both ladies showers were blocked. When we complained the owner said they were cleaned twice a day
There are no marked out pitches unless you have a hook up, we got back late one evening (after dark) to find someone in the middle of setting up very close to us, so much so that their car was blocking our way. Also while the site is well away from main roads and towns the camping field is wedged between a large static site and the caravan club next door.
The plus points that we could find are that Whitesands is a lovely beach and is in walking distance and the pastries from the shop were lovely.

Fantastic time in St Davids at a great site in stunning surroundings. Field is flat, shop well stocked and toilets clean and modern. Had to use toilets in opposite field once and as the site was about half full would think busy periods I would be queuing!
Staff were brilliant helpful with local knowledge and willing to reset the electricity several times without complaint. The beach was great and only a short walk, water a bit cold for the old gits but the kids were chuffed to bits. Will definitely return next year.

Just returned from a two night break (beaten by the rain) we would have stayed longer but there is not much to do when the rain is persistent. The campsite is very good with clean toilets and showers. The walk to the beach is about 10 minutes but it is a walk on a narrow road so you will need to be careful with children. Whitesands beach is very nice but watch out for that current. There is another small beach but you will need to walk over the cliffs to get there.
The car park charges about £2.50 for the day and does get busy.

Nice site. Modern, clean toilets and showers. Flat, spacious pitches for EHU. Nice views of the hills around the coast.
Another mention for the pain au chocolat - they're lovely!
The shop is well stocked and open very acommodating hours. There's a nice chippy in St David's.
Whitesands beach is lovely, although we drove, so not sure what the walk's like.

We have stayed here twice and had no complaints. The facilities are good and the shop excellent. The setting is stunning with easy access to Whitesands Beach. The site was very full but still the atmosphere was good and an excellent and safe site for young children. Between our two visits (the first was in 2004) considerable improvements were made to the shower and toilet facilities and to the camping field itself - they clearly respond to campers requests!
St Davids is close by and has enough to keep you occupied on a rainy day or two. The refectory at the cathedral does fantastic food at very reasonable prices.

Stayed here for two wonderful days in what turned out to be a very hot September. It's a great location, and just a short walk to Whitesands Bay and the beautiful St Davids Head. The site is level and good for tents and motorhomes. Shop is well-stocked with daily fresh bread and croissants. Site and shower block / toilet very clean and everything worked. Definately worth a return visit.

This is a lovely picturesque site nestling under a rocky cairn about half a mile + from Whitesands Bay. (An easy walk - but probably not with children, picnic, wet suits and other beach paraphinalia!) Beach has quite a big car park but full by lunch time. Site shop is fab and well priced. Only criticism was that our field had only two toilets and two showers for men and women respectively and although there was another(bigger) block in the field opposite (which had fewer touring pitches) this was a bit of a trek. Very windy whilst we were there and not an awful lot of indoor attractions in the area if weather is bad but a great, friendly family site in a beautiful location.
