Just had to say how pleased we were with this site. The wardens were absolutely lovely, the shower block was warm and immaculate and to echo previous reviewers, once the newly planted trees and shrubs fill out, it will be beautiful. People constantly working hard on the site to keep the bins emptied, keep the site and communal areas clean and tending to the garden areas - no slacking at all. They really do care.

Yes, as someone has said, you can see the prison across the valley through the trees but it's not all you can see - there are hills, fields, sheep, birds too!

Plenty of space between pitches - you'll need heavy duty pegs though. Someone has commented about some of the pitches being awkward to manoeuvre into but we didn't have that problem and we are towing with a long wheelbase Mercedes Sprinter van - with a caravan on the back it doesn't get much longer or more awkward. Maybe we were lucky with the pitch - we just had to watch the front end of a caravan opposite and to the right of our pitch - that was all.

There is a children's' play area which looked quite nice but that wasn't of interest to us, and I believe there is a dog walk although again we don't have a dog.

And now here I must take issue with previous reviewers about the walk into Barney. We did the walk in and coming back it was in the dark - it being March - without any problem at all. I reckon it took about 15 minutes. Okay, there isn't a pavement, but the road is not busy (it's a B road), you're only on it for about half a mile, you have good visibilty/warning of oncoming traffic and can step on to the very wide and flat grass verges either side. We found that even though we stepped aside drivers gave us a wide berth anyway. Once off the road, the walk over the Tees footbridge and up into town is traffic free, it's on tarmac, and in daylight the woods are wonderful. Take a torch at night so you can see your feet as it's not lit, but whilst there are woods ahead of you in the bit over the river, you're not in them and it feels completely safe - there's houses only a few yards away.

I cannot say road noise either at night or during the day was a problem, the road just isn't busy enough, and at night there's very little traffic going up or down - there's nothing out there to go to only small villages!

There are lovely walks in the area to suit all abilities - get an OL31 OS map if you're into serious walking. I think the site office has information on perhaps less demanding walks in the immediate area.

Plenty of pubs in town (some a tad rough and scruffy) but The Well (down the hill toward the castle) is fine and they do food which we've been told is good. We can however personally (thoroughly) recommend Valentines restaurant on the cobbled area (think they're only open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays), and The Bengal Merchant (down the hill near The Well pub). Have to say the food in the Bengal Merchant was probably the best Indian food I've eaten outside of a Michelin starred. If you're in the car, do try the Fox and Hounds - turn left out of the campsite and drive up to Cotherstone - only about 5 minutes or so away by car [it's not walkable]. The food was excellent and it's a welcoming country type pub. Much nicer food pub than anything in Barney itself.

We will be going back next year. Thank you to the wardens and staff at Teesdale BC for all you're doing to make this a quality site.

We stayed here for a quick week-end away and wanted to see what the new site was like - we only live about half an hour away. The facilities are fantastic with underfloor heating in the shower blocks - lovely and warm and very clean.

The site was very nice and I am sure that once the plants and shrubs mature then it will be pretty, but oh dear, whose idea was it to build a caravan site next to a very busy, very fast, very noisy road - and on the other side a lovely view of Deerbolt prison.

The walk into 'Barney' is definitely more than 10 minutes and quite dangerous I would think, but the town is worth a visit with a good selection of shops and places to eat.

There is no dog walk on site and I got the impression that it is not dog-friendly - in fact we felt a bit uncomfortable. I cannot comment on the wardens because we never saw any once we had booked in! Sorry CC but we won`t be back

Spent the weekend at this brand new site as an alternative to the lakes due to bad weather. It's an excellent park, with modern facilities, including heated floors, fully serviced pitches and TV hook-ups etc.

The walk to Barnard Castle is short, although a little stretch of it is on the main road. The town is well worth a visit, with great shops and places to eat and drink.

Teesdale is great for walking. There is an excellent stretch on the Teesdale Way which can be accessed right from the site.

My wife and I are OAP's and have a dog,Our stay was for 5 nights. This is a compact site and appears well laid out,and when the shrub/tree planting has grown in a year or so should give more privacy and wind protection. The central brand new toilet block is superb, even has heated flooring. There is a compact play area with good equipment.Roadways, lighting, and service areas are good. Two access pedestrian gates, with electronic locks, at each end of site have been closed off 'due to planning issues'.Probably the danger from stepping onto the busy road !.

A few niggles,No way can you walk to Barnard Castle in 10 mins,as is promised,The warden(young and fit)agreed it took her 18/20 mins to do,with great care, as the road is busy and fast, and the verges are poor and uneven,so walking on the road is required, great caution needed if you have dogs or children. The last few hundred yards can be done along the river bank, but there is a steep climb into town.

For dog owners, there has been no provision whatever made for dog walking on site.On asking warden where the 'dog walk nearby' was, I was directed to use the council layby 100yards past site entrance !.The woodland path was impassable due to mud,and as has been mentioned by others is steep and sloping and only suitable for able bodied fit folk. There had been lots of comments made about these two issues in the site comments book, some also mentioned a lot of road noise,(for a 'b' road it is very busy). If you are getting on in years and own a dog this site will be unlikely to find favor with you.

Hi, this is a brand new site but one can see the layout, landscaping, and pitch placement have been well thought out. As you would expect the lawn turf and tree saplings are not yet established. Children's play area was still under construction and dog walk area not yet constructed. Pitches all hardstanding and huge, toilets the best and cleanest ever used (brand new). Short walk to BARNY but no footpath or lighting so care needed. A great walk begins from site down to deepdale beck narrow and boggy in places great care needed.

This club site only opened in August and has been pretty much booked up, probably out of curiosity. It's location is good, being only a mile or so from Barnard Castle. There is a public footpath to town through the woods, however the first part of it is quite slopey with a deep drop on the left side and is not suitable for children on their own or people with walking difficulties. Also the paths through the woods are not signed. We got lost and wandered around for an hour before ending up back where we started. The council or the Caravan Club should put some direction signs up.

The site itself was a bit of a disappointment. It felt a bit cramped. There is no dog walk and surprisingly for a brand new club designed site some of the pitches are quite awkward to pitch on. We stayed on pitch 15 and reversing on to it was practically impossible as the road ends just past the pitch and white posts prevented me driving far enough forward to get the rear of the caravan positioned to reverse with the car. Fortunately I have a mover fitted. On the subject of movers, the gravel on the pitches is so loose that when reversing with the mover, mine and my friend's vans jockey wheels sank to their hubs in the soft gravel.

Toilet block usual club standard but can't help feeling the club has missed the mark with this site. We much prefer the Camping and Caravan Club site a couple of miles further on.

Stay over the bank holiday weekend for 3 nights. Fantastic location only 10 mins walk into B/Castle town centre. Good local shops (Morrisons/Co-op) for your daily needs. With this being a new site all the showers etc are top class. Well worth a vist. Childrens play park was still not finished when we visited but looks like it will be good when complete. All pitches are hard standing and all level, not a bad pitch from what I could see walking round the site. The wardens were friendly and helpful considering any little troubles they may be having on anew site. Newspapers could be ordered daily. Walks in the surrounding area are good with local maps available in the site shop. A little windy when we were there but all in all a god weekend and we will be back soon.

I would love to congratulate the Caravan Club on their new site!

But I'm afraid that is not possible. One would have thought the CC would have put all their past experience into the planning but it quite obvious that the site design was not carried out by caravan users.

Don't get me wrong it is very pretty with good facilities but it is just too open (My outfit was overlooked by 14 others which is too obtrusive for me) with a significant amount of traffic noise from a busy lane running at the top side of the site.

Another strange thing... Only 8 service pitches when the trend appears to be going the other way and as for the pitch connections, well in half the pitches that is just a joke.

Will I go again? I think not whilst the good site at Hargill House is still there! And finally there is no dog walk, another backward step!
