Ideal site for cycling/walking in the New Forest. This is a very open site with plenty of space between pitches. Many of these are not on hard standings and these did become very soggy after a couple of hours rain. Families be warned, we took our 8 year old son with us. There are not any facilities on site for children, I.E. No play park on the site. The only recreation area is off the site, although only a couple of minutes walk. However this is also the dog walking area, so don't play ball games, run or sit down or you will be covered in dogs mess. All the children could do was cycle one way around the site.

The local village is a good 10 mins cycle ride away. The site & toilet block are kept exceptionally clean, although be prepared to wait for a toilet/shower cubicle to become vacant in the mornings.

Have just returned from a 4 night stay at this site and agree with all previous comments from other reviewers in respect of facilities and general cleanliness. The location is lovely and the wardens all work very hard to make one's stay as enjoyable as possible.
I have just one minor criticism. I was told by one of the wardens to refrain from walking the dog 'around the edges of the site' and to take him off the site as soon as I felt he needed to relieve himself. I am a responsible dog owner and always clean up after him but I am not able to do anything about his scent marking, which all dogs do! Obviously I did as asked but felt this was a tad unreasonable as I was pitched at the furthest point from the entrance. Dog owners beware - you will be spoken to!

To Find site:- It would be advised not to use satellite navigation for the final stages of the journey to this site. On the approach to Brockenhurst from Lyndhurst on the A337 watch out for the Balmer Lawn Hotel on the left, a little further on, opposite the Carey's Manor Hotel turn right into Grigg Lane signed B3055 Sway/New Milton. Continue to the staggered cross roads and cross into Sway Road, just past the Esso Garage turn right into The Rise, signed Rhinefield / Burley and right again at the T junction into Rhinefield Road. Continue along Rhinefield Road past the Forest Park Hotel and about half a mile further on turn right passing car park on left. Continue along this road (regular speed humps) to site. The final approach to the site is mainly single track. For this reason the site instructions state no arrivals before 12 noon and departures are to be by 11.30am.

This site has a superb location right in the New Forest a couple of miles outside the small town of Brockenhurst. Like a lot of other Caravan Club sites it is well camouflaged from the surrounding countryside. In total there are 127 pitches, of which 62 are hardstandings. They in an open aspect set out around a circular access road. Outside the main season only the hardstanding pitches are used.
The site has an interesting toilet block which is round in shape and consists of 12 individual cubicles containing a toilet and shower accessed from the outside of the building. Additionally there are also normal male and female toilets and showers but limited in size.
There is also a dish wash area. The laundry facilities are accessed from inside the female toilet area. Whilst the block is kept clean it does seem to be in need of, at the least, a makeover as it is showing signs of age.
Reception sells a few essentials and papers may be ordered. There is also an information room with details of local restaurants and places to visit.

There is so much to do in this area. Both Southampton and Bournemouth are within easy reach. Nearer to hand is Lyndhurst which has quite a selection of shops. Brockenhurst has a Tesco Extra for most basics but if you want larger food shops a journey to Lymington would be the nearest option.
Closer to the site there are many opportunities for walks, cycle rides and drives.

Just beautifully located. Agree with all that has been said. This is really cycling country and there's a good bus / cycle scheme so you can try out longer one way trips.

Whilst we were there the rain was heavy and the site was very boggy as was Exmoor. The site is always packed full so book very early. Autumn in the New Forest is just unbelievably beautiful, but the newly hatched ponies in spring have the ahhhhhhh bless factor.

Facilities, whilst spotless, are under pressure and showers were full from 7-o-clock till 10.00.

Facilties a bit dated and old and really could do with an overhaul and increase in facilities, but lease is coming to an end so decisions are on hold. The Mad Hatter cafe in the village is excellent plus it sells 5 slices of home-made sponges and other calorific cakes for just £3.75 takeway. Stock up your freezer. Just perfect for cycling picnics and the best value we've ever encountered.

This was our 2nd visit to this lovely, very popular site. We had to book 6 months in advance to get a pitch over the bank holiday weekend but it was worth it. The site was only about a third full as the CC wardens had had to cancel all those booked onto grass pitches due to heavy rain 3 or 4 days before the weekend.

The hardstanding pitches were a good size. The toilet block (with individual shower rooms) is a real asset to this site. Wardens very friendly and helpful. You can walk from the site entrance straight out into the New Forest. The walk to Brockenhurst takes about 20/25 mins - could be quicker if you cut across the heathland but it was very very boggy in some places! There's a fab chinese takeway in town - highly recommended! There is also a cycle route/walk into Lyndhurst (approx 4 miles each way) which is mainly flat and traffic free. Fab, doggie friendly (roof terrace seating outside) tearooms in Lyndhurst called Mad Hatters!

Will definitely visit again - IF we can get in!

Just got back from here yesterday after 4 night break. Lovely area with lots to do. Wardens on site were very friendly and helpful and the site was well kept. All the hard standing were taken so we had to go on grass which was a bit wet when we arrived after some very heavy downpours, but it did drain out fairly quickly. Felt very safe for kids (6yr old and 7 mth old), our 6 year old learnt to ride his bike while we were there. Although there isn't any play equipment you don't really need it with the woods and streams at your door, but you obviously have to be with them. Make sure you take your wellies, we had many hours of fun playing in the streams.

Nearby area very flat so excellent for bike riding (but we didn't take ours!) Good shower blocks as individual bathrooms. Site nearly full, but didn't have trouble finding free shower. Did tend to go late afternoons though.

We went to nearby Paultons park (£16 each including kids) but you could spend all day there. Also Marwell zoo £14.50 (if you pick up the leaflet there is £1 off voucher), took about 4 hours with lunch stop). Site 1 mile from Brockenhurst so walkable, now got Tesco express (with its own parking) for everything you'd need. Also 2 chinese takeaways, chip shop, indian. Tried China Chef chinese in the main road of shops, OK, but not the best, would try the other one next time. Butchers, bakers and newsagents plus other gift shops.

Nearby Lyndhurst(4 miles with a sign posted path from site) didn't try path so not sure what its like, one to do next time. Lymington is 10-15 minute drive, spent a fortune in M & S food store. Carpark behind free for first hour. Lots of other smaller shops. Lovely marina, but didn't have time to stop there for long. Also looked like boat rides, and ferry to IOW. Waitrose superstore with parking up the road from town.

Saw lots of horses, ponies and donkeys wandering around as you would expect. Great position for exploring, we've still got a long list of places to go next time. Definately go back to the site, probably next year if we can fit it in.

Love this site. Visited last weekend and had the misfortune for the electrics to go on our van, right outside reception. The wardens couldn't have been more helpful, trying to help locate the problem and showing us where we could plug in to the electric so we could boil the kettle and allocating us a nice pitch before to many others arrived.
Luckily got the van going before the breakdown man arrived, but the wardens sent him to the pitch to make sure everything was ok. Great people, great site.

We stayed at Black Knowl for a week at Easter 2007.  The site is of typical Caravan Club standard.  The wardens were friendly and helpful and the place was very clean and tidy.  Rather than your typical toilet and shower block, Black Knowl has 12 individual bathrooms with shower, toilet and wash basin.  This is very nice, however, when we were there the site was full and unless you were down by about 7.30am, you always had to wait for a bathroom, sometimes for up to 15 or 20 minutes.  The site has a mixture of grass pitches and hard standings and the units are well spaced so you never feel you are being overlooked.  The wardens are very fussy about how you set up your unit and the direction you face your awning so that a sense of privacy is maintained.

The site is situated 2 miles by road from the centre of Brockenhurst but you can walk from the site along a narrow gravel footpath across some fields which cuts the distance down to about a mile and a half.  Make sure you follow the directions via this footpath to the village carefully though, as we didn't and got lost!

There is a restaurant and pub about a mile from the site.  There is a large network of cycle paths throughout the New Forest, one of which runs right past the site.  The site office sells ice cream and sweets.

We thought the site was lovely and would definitely stay there again if we return to this area.

This is a lovely site, right in the middle of the New Forest, Brockenhurst being about a mile away. May being a great time of the year to visit this site as all the new born Foals have just arrived. The site is very clean and tidy, as are the shower blocks. Our 2 young daughters really enjoyed it to. Lots of walks on your doorstep for all the family.

 April 2005
We have visited this site at least once a year for the last 14 yrs (and it's not weekendable for us). Sounds like we're really boring but the area is very beautiful and we never want to come home again.

The site is typical caravan club standard - be aware it's members only.

It does have problems with waterlogging although more hardstandings have been added over the years. There is no childrens play equipment but then there's more than enough space right outside the site.

The site is situated smack bang in the centre of the forest but only 4 miles away from Lymington which has a great Saturday street market. Lymington is a small georgian town and harbour with most high street stores, supermarkets. Take the train from Brockenhurst to Lymington (parking can be difficult on market days but try the yacht club).

You can walk into Brockenhurst from the site which now has a Tesco express. There are plenty of good restaurants/pubs/takeaways. Il Paulo II def recommended.

I have to say autumn is best - always looks as though someone turned the colours up on the leaves and it's not as busy. Only regret is that the site isn't open all year!
