This seemed the ideal place for us in terms of peace and quiet, and lovely scenery. Having read the previous reviews, we weren't looking forward to using the facilities, but what a surprise! The site is under new ownership, and the shower blocks have been completely refurbished. Warm, modern, spotlessly clean with plenty of hot water, a joy to use. The new owners were in the process of upgrading the washing up areas for campers, and were installing a new motorhome service point.
This is a wonderful peaceful place, ideal for relaxing and exploring the beautiful surroundings.

When we arrived, we received a warm welcome from the warden. The touring area is at the front of the site adjacent to the road but we were not disturbed much by road noise. All the touring pitches are made of stone chippings and are clearly marked, though we thought it could be improved by putting some hedges or shrubs between the pitches to give a little more privacy.
The big let-down is the toilet/shower facilities - during our two day stay, the facilities were not cleaned at all, apart from the washbasins as there is a notice on the wall requesting that if you use a basin, you clean it afterwards! There are two showers in the ladies and they are the dirtiest we have ever come across. They had those awful rubber mats in the bottom and when they were lifted, the dirt and hairs that were lurking underneath were appalling. Two of the toilet cubicles were locked up, so there were only two available. Also, there are two heaters in both the ladies and mens blocks but neither of these were switched on and it was a bit chilly when we were there.
This is a nice site in a lovely location, close to the Glentrool visitor centre, but the toilet/shower blocks need updating - or at least cleaning on a daily basis.

Situated in a beautiful area.
Was made very welcome by warden.
Shower block in need of TLC.
Touring caravan area surrounded by trees therefore no outlook.
Midges were a huge problem evening and morning.
Please be aware that there is no wifi, TV signal or radio signal. Also I was unable to get a mobile phone signal but there is a telephone box on site.
An ideal spot if you are seeking to get away from it all but won't suit everyone.

Awesome. Loved it. Everything, right down to the fact that they sold Flake ice creams in the shop. Seriously though, we came with a car and a tent, having found the place easily thanks to clear directions from our phone call to book, as two people who hadn't camped for ten years. We pitched our tent in a cracking spot under the trees furthest from the caravans and went down to the pub (10 minutes on foot) for a great meal and a well-deserved Irn Bru, and came back to see the sunset.
Not many reviewers mentioned that this site is in the Galloway Forest Dark Sky park (just), but this is a major, major plus. We got a clear sky the first night which gave us fantastic views of the universe, though we were cursing the lack of clouds later as temperatures plummetted overnight. In summer it will be comfy to sit outside in a t-shirt (close proximity to gulf stream) at 3am and enjoy the views, and the ducks. In May you might need a thick jacket. Either way, do it, you won't regret it. When you do go to sleep you'll hear puddocks, owls and other birds, BUT NO STAG PARTIES etc, which I agree is another bonus.
I used the on-site showers to warm myself up, and they were hot enough to do exactly that. They were also clean and while not power showers, there's rooms at the pub for people who need those. Don't go camping and complain because it's not like being at home. Be happy that your shower is clean and warm, like here.
I got a clear line when I used my mobile (Vodafone), and the nearest supermarket is NOT in Girvan, but again, like it matters. There's a shop on site and Chris opened its doors out of hours to serve us happily, and it had all we needed and more, including things to do. They're also surrounded on all sides by wee shops, farms and houses selling local produce, and Castle Douglas can easily be used on your way in to stock up on food (The town has a great initiative to produce and sell local goods). Which brings me to my final point, the location is absolutely superb. We took the car but there's buses that drop you off right outside the park and you could easily stay there for a few days walking or cycling. Having the car we were just a few minutes from some great sights like the Mull of Galloway, Logan Botanic Gardens and others, and the drive north can be done up a single track road with sheep and cows walking about in unfenced fields, so it just felt like another world.
Well worth a look and we're already trying to persuade people to come down with us in summer. Oh, and I've never stayed in another pay campsite, but I can't imagine you'll get much cheaper anywhere else. We left on Sunday morning feeling like we'd stolen from them!

Great location for sightseeing, walking & cycling.
Pleasant area for tents over looking a small pond with ducks. Caravan area was all hard-standing. Electric-hook up was available for tent users.
Reception/shop open 9am until 11am and 4pm until 6pm.
What let this site down was the toilet and shower block. Not very clean & could do with updating. In the ladies only 2 of the 4 toilets were in use and the lock on the disabled toilet was broken. There was no attempt to clean them in the 3 nights we were there.

Just back from Glentrool and thought it was due some detailed info.
Booked in advance with Chris and Mick who run the site with no hassle at all, very friendly folk.
Site was easy to find, being just north of Newton Stewart off the A714.
As advertised this site is set in woodland and does feel quite remote. But there is a small pub House o' the Hill about 200m down the road and the aforementioned Newton Stewart at 9 miles away if you feel the need to.
There you can get all you need in Sainsburys, Aldi and a host of pleasant shops, tearooms and a petrol station.
The holiday park itself is well laid out and I feel the camping area is the best looking, with a small pond with ducks and birds making it their home.
The no EHU camping area is slightly uneven but with plenty of level places to pitch.
When we arrived a very flat spot had been reserved so if you are picky about your pitch then maybe ring ahead.
A bit of privacy is possible as the area is well stocked with trees and bushes.
The EHU camping area is only slightly sloping and a tad further from the pond.
The ground was a bit rocky so bring stout pegs.
Access to the camping area is through the touring caravan area which is gravelled and lightly sloped. This is also where the water point, fire point and bins are. Glentrool recycles so top marks there.
The Reception also houses a shop with basic provisions you may need and loads of leaflets, menus plus a book exchange. Chris and Mick are a mine of local info as well if you happen to be stuck for ideas.
The shower block is of a good standard and is kept reasonably clean. Three loos and two showers in both the gents and ladies with plenty of sinks in both. All hot water at Glentrool is free.
The potwash is outback of the shower block and is undercover. One sink for potwash and one for clothes.
The drying lines for your washing are next to the potwash. Chris does politely ask that all washing is dried in that area and not on clothes lines between trees etc.
There is a phonebox on site as reception of any kind is hard to come by in Glentrool, big bonus we say.
We saw a small play park for the kids but could not recommend the site as super child friendly.
Just down the road 3 miles away is the Glentrool visitor centre with varied walking and cycling trails. All set above the magnificent Loch Trool which is picturesque and well worth your time getting around.
Further afield is Stranraer at about 35 miles and Girvan at about 34, both pleasant coastal towns for a day trip.
To sum up this site will not suit the weekend lager brigade, it's too far and too quiet. So if it's peace and quiet with outdoor pursuits then this site is for you. The scenery is enchanting.
But, and it is well worth a mention. Midges. Be prepared for midges.
Avon skin so soft and a can of Raid should be at the top of your packing list if you go to Glentrool in season.
If you have a tent with big doors and fly screens, you may well escape them. We could only sit out one night out of five.
We didn't mind sitting in and reading but think on if it's in season when you plan to go.
We would definitely go back to Glentrool, it's a great site in a beautiful part of the world.

Arrived at the site and was greeted by staff who explained the site and told me I had more or less the whole camping area to myself and could set up anywhere.
Facilities were clean and tidy with good hot water but took a long time to arrive, there is only one shower available in the mens area and the shower head is not what you may call spreading the shower of water directly on as more kind of your direction.
The site grounds were clean and tidy with plenty of clean water and refuse facility, when putting my tent up I found the ground to have stones and putting pegs in sufficiently was a task but well worth it.
The camping area is sheltered and very secluded, the pub down the road the house on the hill is very good with lovely cheery staff and very good beer.
All in all a pleasant stay other campers I met there all commented on the peace and tranquillity and how the pond with the ducks who come out to help you with your food are really charming and I had to agree, if you are biking or walking you will a visit.

I stayed on this park recently with my partner and we will definitely return.
We recieved a warm welcome and had a very nice pitch near a pond. It is very quiet and picturesque, lovely for walking and cycling. We walked through the forests to Bruces Stone overlooking the loch and the mountains/ hills -what a view!
This holiday park had good facilities, the washrooms and showers were clean and tidy. There is also an area for washing pots and somewhere to hang laundry. The shop is small but had what we needed.
We plan to return later in the year as there was quite a lot to do in the area and we really enjoyed our stay. We found it a good base for getting around but we could enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside.

Arrived at this site to a very warm welcome. Good reception and then shown round site and which pitch to use. The area for touring caravans and motorhomes is all hard standing with electric hookup, small pitches so a bit close to your neighbour. The area for tents is beautiful with a duck pond and picnic benches, much nicer than the area for caravans. There are also static caravans in another area and again very nice and much better than the touring area.
The surrounding area is lovely with Glentrool visitor centre and tearoom close and some of the most beautiful walks and cycle trails.
The down side to this site has got to be the toilets and showers, not very clean, cold, could do with being updated and there was no attempt to clean them in the four nights we stayed there, it was the same with the washing up area, not looked after very well.
I would like to return to this site simply for the surrounding area, however will not do so until the facilities are improved.

Just got back from a few days here. Not the area for you if you're looking for the high life but plenty walking and biking around Glentrool. Small pub / restaurant with friendly staff just a few minutes away.
The site is immaculate. Has a little shop with some basics but no milk or eggs and I can see why as it's ten miles or so to the nearest town.So bring your own!
Ground a bit uneven and stony for tents but we managed fine. The pond is just beautiful but don't feed the ducks no matter how friendly they are! If you like nature you will love it here. Dragonflies abound. Adequate facilities for campers but only one thing I missed was somewhere to pop my freeze packs for the cool box.
I also loved the peace and quiet as there were no noisy children around.Sorry but this was what suited us as two old fogies.
I would gladly visit again.
